<p>In order to make a legal decision, identifying issues is important in judicial proceedings. However, it is sometimes very difficult to find the issues which should be in an argument because the way of their investigation and judgement process is different in each of the cases. To solve the problem, this study aims to clarify the concept of issue identification process support based on data and build a demo of the system. As a use-case, we employ child abuse cases for the system and deploy the artificial intelligence which enables to conduct probabilistic causal inference by Bayesian Network to support their judgement. Then, we discuss the concept of the future issue of this identification process support system, including the question whether this can be applied in trial process with advanced Bayesian Network from the perspectives of each case, user and manager position.</p>

User modeling becomes more important at product making business because companies have to deal with a wide variety of customers favorites. We are researching customer behavior modeling based on customers' sensibility or "kansei". In this study, we focused on car selection as the first case of customer modeling and we researched factors related to the selection of a car through qualitative surveys. We took an Internet survey for car selection based on the result of past surveys. In this paper, we report the result obtained from an analysis of the survey data.

When we analyze bigdata, it can be a very serious problem that how we make the model from the data. Big data can be a very large sparse matrix and it is unable to analyze with ordinary analytical method. In this thesis, we introduce some examples of big-data analystics which we tired to control and denote our thought of big data analystics.

To realize sustainable improvement in the nursing-care service field, we are trying to design motivation and creation technology for employees by developing co-creation support system. Components of nursing-care services such as supporting eating and assisting walking are non-routine tasks because employees have to change the service process according to the condition of the patients and environment in order to raise the service quality. Nevertheless, it is difficult to understand actions and results in the entire nursing-care service field because employees have little time to record their actions and are not motivated to do so. Recording support mobile terminals along with employees and with various sensors embedded in the facilities are expected to support the visualization of situations in such collaborative and face-to-face service fields. Moreover, motivation for employees to record actions and knowledge is crucial because human-sensor and human-computation abilities are completely dependent on their proactivity. This paper describes an co-creation support methodology for nursing-care service improvement with 1) Koto(events) accumulation support, 2) design support and 3) knowledge creation support by participatory interaction design, which we proposed previously.

It becomes increasingly important for service industries to understand customer behavior using large-scale data such as POS data. However, limitations exist in a customer model constructed on the basis of such behavioral data alone. This paper presents how we can construct a customer model on the basis of both large-scale purchase data and lifestyle survey data. It proposes a method that reveals the connection between lifestyle and behavior by deducing lifestyle from behavioral data using Random Forests, a machine learning algorithm. Then, It applies the proposed method to an actual mass merchandizers using questionnaires on lifestyle collected and the customer behavioral data (ID-POS Data). It thereby demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method and its possible use in supporting managerial decision-making on critical issues such as product selection.

In this paper, to prevent infant injuries by controlling environmental factors, a computational model of predicting infant behavior from environment is developed. As a subject of the modeling, infant climbing behaviors that accompany fall injuries are focused. Based on observed behavior data, the probabilistic causal relationships among object attributes, infant characteristics, and climbing behaviors were modeled as the Bayesian Network Model. Infant climbing behaviors correlated with the height and surface area of the top face of the objects and the height of the infants. It was demonstrated that infant climbing behaviors could be predicted by the object attributes and be controlled by changing object designs. Behavior models developed by this modeling approach could be useful in preventing infant injuries by evaluating environmental conditions eliciting infant behaviors and by modifying the environments so that infant behaviors leading to injuries would be controlled.

In Japan, childhood injury prevention is urgent issue. Safety measures through creating knowledge of injury data are essential for preventing childhood injuries. Especially the injury prevention approach by product modification is very important. The risk assessment is one of the most fundamental methods to design safety products. The conventional risk assessment has been carried out subjectively because product makers have poor data on injuries. This paper deals with evidence-based risk assessment, in which artificial intelligence technologies are strongly needed. This paper describes a new method of foreseeing usage of products, which is the first step of the evidence-based risk assessment, and presents a retrieval system of injury data. The system enables a product designer to foresee how children use a product and which types of injuries occur due to the product in daily environment. The developed system consists of large scale injury data, text mining technology and probabilistic modeling technology. Large scale text data on childhood injuries was collected from medical institutions by an injury surveillance system. Types of behaviors to a product were derived from the injury text data using text mining technology. The relationship among products, types of behaviors, types of injuries and characteristics of children was modeled by Bayesian Network. The fundamental functions of the developed system and examples of new findings obtained by the system are reported in this paper.

Developing effective safety messages targeting parents is one of the key issues of injury prevention and safety promotion research. The present study was conducted using online-experiment as well as a focus-group methodology to evaluate message effects of animations which depicted childhood injury situations. Parents with children aged 0.5-2 years participated in the study. Compared to simple texts with illustrations on a paper describing injury scenes, animations appeared to be more effective in terms of leaving a strong impression. Focus-group discussion revealed that animations gave parents an opportunity to consider strategies to prevent injuries depicted in the animations. The results suggested that further examination of effectiveness of injury scene animations in safety education is worthwhile.

Human behavior understanding in everyday life is promising but not established research field. Our project named 'open life matrix' is focused on this field. In these years, many sensor houses and robotic room projects have been studied and sensing and network technology have been established. However, still we have problems to realize everyday life support information systems and services. There are two major problems. The first one is data representation and computational modeling problem in everyday life. The second one is that we don't have a good way to realize valuable services from research outcomes. We propose a challenge to solve these problems by a scheme for accumulating common data set and probabilistic causal modeling during everyday life services.

Daily life behavior modeling is discussed. This modeling framework consists of statistical learning, probabilistic reasoning, user modeling, and large-scale data collecting technologies. Bayesian networks can represent causality relationship as graphical structures. Such models should include situations and contexts of daily life behavior through real services. In order to collect large-scale data connected with them, we have to provide real services supported by many users. This concept is named " Research as a service " and discussed in this paper.

Understanding everyday life behavior requires multidisciplinary and integrated research. This stems from the fact that everyday life behavior is much higher dimensional phenomena than a single academic society can deal with. This paper discusses a method for representing and processing information to deal with everyday life behavior and proposes a new concept of a "spatio-temporal-semantic mapping system (STS Map)" that allows us to standardize and integrate a variety of information and to share information multidisciplinary. The features of the STS Map lie in 1) spatio-temporal expansion of behavior metrics sensing with location sensor, 2) representation based on an environmental coordinate system, 3) a statistical modeling process for knowledge acquisition and a retargeting process. To show the effectiveness of the proposed STS mapping system, this paper reported an implemented system and a case study using the implemented system. In the case study, we conducted in situ measurement of 47 children playing with equipment by a wireless wearable location-electromyography sensor and created two models on a children's skill from the measured data. This paper reported cross-validation of the constructed behavior models and compared them. This paper also reported a new design of play equipment having a climbing part that was suitable for the target age group of children. The new design was conducted using the created model in collaboration with playground equipment designers.

Providing parents with information related to child's injury has been considered to be a useful method for preventing child's injuries for many years. However, statistics on child's injuries shows that conventional methods failed to reduce injuries. One cause lies in the lack of feedback loop for personalizing information. In this paper, the authors describe"an information circulation system, "which collects information on parents' cognition on child's injuries through offering personalized information in parallel. This paper describes a new service which offers injury scene videos on the web for injury prevention as a concrete example of the information circulation system. The feasibility of the new service is confirmed by conducting experiments on web for over 13 months in cooperation with a company. This paper also proposes a new method for personalizing information by selecting optimal videos on the web content service based on feature values describing injuries. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by questionnaire survy for 20 parents.

We are developing a mobile robot, called Jijo-2, which provides office services, such as answering queries about people's location, route guidance, and delivery tasks. To smoothly interact with office people, Jijo-2 is expected to conduct natural spoken conversation. This paper describes dialogue techniques implemented on our Jijo-2 office robot, i.e. noise-free voice acquisition system by a microphone array, inference of under-specified referents and zero pronouns using the attentional states, and context-sensitive construction of semantic frames from fragmented utterances. The behavior of the dialogue system integrated with the sound source detection, navigation, and face recognition vision is demonstrated in real dialogue examples in a real office.

To realize evaluation of nursing care robots, we propose methodology to develop evaluation tree by employees and customers. Then recording support mobile terminals along with employees and with various sensors embedded in the facilities are expected to support the visualization of situations in such collaborative and face-to-face service fields. Moreover, motivation for employees to record actions and knowledge is crucial because human-sensor and human-computation abilities are completely dependent on their proactivity. This paper describes an evaluation support methodology of nursing-care service components with both direct effects and long-term effects of actions by participatory interaction design, which we proposed previously.

To design safety products, it is needed to predict usage pattern and risk scientifically based on actual data. One of the approaches is to use actual accidents data in the past but it is difficult to retrieve and analyze them because accidents data are described with free description. In this paper, the authors proposed a method which enables to understand summaries of accidental situations under specified conditions and its similar accidental situations by describing accidental situation with structuralized description. We reported about a system developed for realizing the proposed method and its application to actual burn and scald accident data.

The purpose of this study is to prevent accident in infants. Therefore, we consider analysis the action of the behavior in the everyday life from several types of sensors. Conventional action recognition has been done only from the image. WWe propose applying additional information, which we treat as the prior distribution in the meaning of the Bayes inference, observed from the supersonic sensors. Prior distribution use Bayesian network formulation in the observation data. Likelihood function calculates maximum likelihood estimation method in feature extraction of images. In this paper, we consider feature extraction candidates as HLAC, SIFT, and 3D SIFT, and compare the performance of them. We estimate behavior labels by this method. Then, we performed a comparison experiment to inference a behavior labels by this method.

This paper describes a computational customer behavior modeling by Bayesian network with an appropriate category. Categories are generated by a heterogeneous data fusion using an ID-POS data and customer's questionnaire responses with respect to their lifestyle. We propose a latent class model that is an extension of PLSI model. In the proposed model, customers and items are classified probabilistically into some latent lifestyle categories and latent item category. We show that the performance of the proposed model is superior to that of the k-means and PLSI in terms of category mining. We produce a Bayesian network model including the customer and item categories, situations and conditions of purchases. Based on that network structure, we can systematically identify useful knowledge for use in sustainable services. In the retail service, knowledge management with point of sales data mining is integral to maintaining and improving productivity. This method provides useful knowledge based on the ID-POS data for efficient customer relationship management and can be applicable for other service industries. This method is applicable for marketing support, service modeling, and decision making in various business fields, including retail services.

Modeling users' preference becomes important for providing personalized services. In order to construct context-aware statistical models of preference, large amount of training data is needed. However it requires a heavy workload to set real situations, collect subjects under those situations, and collect data about preference under those situations. To avoid this difficulty, often a large amount of data in a supposed situation is collected, i.e., a situation where the subject pretends/imagines that he/she is in a specific situation. Here we report the result of an analysis about the difference of food menu preference between supposed and real situations based on the data acquired through internet surveys.

Injury prevention is one of the most important and urgent issues in children's health since the primary cause of death of children is unintentional injury. Passive approach, namely injury prevention approach by product modification is strongly needed. The risk assessment is one of the most fundamental methods to design safety products. However, the conventional risk assessment has not been able to deal with risk of childhood injury due to product use because product manufacturers have poor childhood injury data and child behavior data. Developing methodology of evidence-based assessment for childhood injury risk is required by product manufacturers. This paper proposes a system for presenting potential high-risk situation by integrating biomechanical, injury, and child daily behavior model. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed system, this paper describes the application of the system to the risk analysis of a playground swing in a park. The system calculated the potential risk of head injury around the swing equipment.

To prevent injury, it is important to cellect injury data and understand improvement by analyzing them. But there are problems that injury situation can not be understood, can not be replicated and can not be shared with similar environments because a methodology for describing injury situation is not established. The main cause is that spatiotemporal information is missing because injury situation is described in free text. This paper proposes a system enable to share injury information with multiple environments and provide appropriate information for characteristic of each envrionment by normalizing and conditional typifying information of situation or place using three-dimensional geographic information system technology and text mining technology. This paper also describe a verification of proposed system using real data of injury due to play equipment.

The purpose of this study is to prevent injury in children. It is important to recognize and observe infant's behavior for injury prevention. Thus, we have forwarded research in Bayesian inference from sensor data. In this research, we calculate likelihood function using tree argumented naive Bayes classifier. Tree aregumented naive Bayes classifier learns from higher order local autocorrelation features from picture of observation and supervised behavior label. TAN classifier is expected higher classification accuracy than naive Bayes classification. We use Bayes inference with TAN classifier and as likelihood from Bayesian networks as prior. Classification accuracy in behavior label evaluates in experiment and inspect efficacy.

Modeling users' preference becomes important for providing personalized services. In order to construct context-aware statistical models of preference, large scale training data is needed. However there are several difficulties in the data collection process such as the cost of collecting data is expensive, random experimental design is difficult and only biased samples are a vailable. In the area of observation study and statistical learning, the domain adaptation becomes a key issue which can be applicable to the problem caused by sample selection bias and the insufficient training data. In this report, we will give a survey of the domain adaptation technologies which are developed in various areas, clarify the common structure in the techniques, and discuss the applicability to the preference modeling. At the same time, some techniques in the preference modeling such as collaborative filtering are discussed from the viewpoint of the domain adaptation.

Recently, it is possible to measure and observe human behavior in everyday life due to development of sensor and information processing technology. Furthermore, data-driven modeling of daily human behavior is becoming possible using a large number of measured real data. One of realistic approaches to developing an everyday life behavior simulator is to integrate multiple behavior models that are constructed from different real data in a complementary style. In this paper, the authors propose a method for integrating multiple probabilistic models using everyday life terminology.

Development of everyday life service technology requires understanding everyday life behavior. However, it is difficult to recognize meanings of multiply ambiguous behavior from collected sensor data. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a system for describing and managing human behavior data using not only sensor data but also meaning and context data. This system consists of embedded sensors for measuring a person's behavior, wearable sensors for measuring the person's remarks and statistical analysis software. The authors applied the developed system to two analyses : 1) causality analysis between "cleaning-up" pattern and person's temperament, and 2) causality analysis between power consumption and behavior.

In order to contribute to saving children exposed to daily dangers, monitoring children's everyday behavior is essential for the paradigms of infant risk prevention. In this research, we introduce a statistical lerning to predict infant behavioral models. With the rapid progress in computer-aided processing, we have come to make use of precise graphical models based on calculation using Bayesian networks. Utilizing diverse graphical models will lead us to cover various prior knowledge dwelling in the real world. In this paper, we model probabilistic causal structure chronologically making use of diverse dynamic images and ultrasound location sensor data based on Bayesian Network. Compared with the maximum likelihood estimator dealing with machine learning, this model will give us broader perspective to predict expected human behavior more precisely in daily life.

Everyday life computing that means human behavior understanding in everyday life is promissing but not established research field. In these years, many sensor homes and robotic room projects have been studied and sensing and network technology have been established. However, still we have problems to realize practical application of everyday life computing. There are two major problems. The first one is re-usability of computational model in everyday life. The second one is we don't have a good way to reduce variables and dimensions of observations. In this paper, we propose a method to use generarized spatio-temporal mapping and Bayesian network structural learning to overcome these problems.

We are developing a movie recommender system. Movie preferences change according to not only the users' personality, but also to the situation/context such as mood, location, accompanying person, and so forth, and the mobile user may access the recommender system under various situations. However, almost all existing researches on recommender systems have not yet dealt with users' situations. In this paper we propose a novel movie recommender system that provides context-aware personalized recommendations for mobile users. Here, we explain data acquisition process by a large-scale WWW questionnaire survey, then explain a novel Bayesian network model construction process using data acquired. Then we explain design and implementation of the context-aware personalized movie recommender system. The effectiveness of the proposed system is evaluated through two experiments.

Probabilistic models and statistical learning methods are studied for intelligent information processing with real world data. In particular, graphical models that have complex structures can handle prior knowledge involved in target problems. Recently, application of conditional random filed models and Bayesian networks are reported as efficient modeling for real world problems like pattern recognition and time series data analysis. In this paper, these graphical models are introduced. As examples to model semantic prior knowledge, human cognitive structures during driving a car and computer simulation for child injury prevention are shown.

One problem in modeling childhood injury in everyday life stems from that we use many kinds of expressions for the same thing. This terminology problem is common in science and technology of everyday life. To solve this problem, this paper describes a method for standardizing the expression of objects, injury mechanisms, injuries, features of objects and behaviors, and so forth based on the NOMESCO code system. This information standardization enables us to integrate a model of everyday life injury with an object database and a lifelog data in order to personalize information on injury prevention. This paper describes a method for visualizing risk of children's home injuries by information integration.

We perform many different behavior in our everyday lives. In the natural sciences such as quantum theory and cosmology, most phenomena can be explained and reproduced in "standard models". However, there is as yet nothing that could be called a standard model for everyday behavior. Building such a model would require sensing technology for describing phenomena, and modeling technology for constructing theory based on quantification of behavior. With the advent of new technology that has become available in recent years, the technological base needed in order to apply science and engineering to the study of everyday behavior is gradually nearing completion. This technology involves 1) pervasive physical phenomena sensing technology that uses ubiquitous sensor technology, 2) global social phenomena sensing technology that uses internet technology, 3) modeling technology based on the large-scale data that is generated by these sensing technologies, and 4) evidence-based service technology. This paper introduces our trial on these four technologies from the viewpoint of child injury prevention engineering and describes the perspective of "science and technology of everyday life system" and its methodology.

In order to make appropriate recommendation, system can model preference/needs of users. So far, various technologies such as collaborative filtering, content-based filtering, demographic filtering have been proposed and applied to many domains. However, almost all of the methods use only a part of available information about users or contens. In this paper, we examine this problem, give a brief survey of exisiting researches, and propose a novel modeling method which utilize all related information in an integrated manner.

With the flood of various information and contents through the Internet, the need for recommendation systems that assist users in finding the information they desire is increasing. For realizing timely movie recommendation, both the user's personality and his situation should be considered at the same time as user preference may change according to his situation such as mood and location etc. We have proposed a recommendation system which achieves context-aware personalized recommendation based on Bayesian network by making use of various information related to user profiles, histories, situations, and content attributes. So far there is no perfect methodology for evaluating usefulness of the recommendation systems as the accuracy is not necessarily connected with the user satisfaction. In this paper, we discuss the evaluation methodology for a movie recommendation system and show the result of basic experiments.

Minimum Description Length (MDL) criteria is generally used as model selection criteria for model construction in Bayesian Network. However, it has been pointed out that the penalty term in MDL criteria for the model complexity is too large when data is small in number compared with the number of combinations of states of the parent nodes. In this paper, we propose a modified MDL with better penalty terms and derive it based on MDL principle. We also show a plan of experimental evaluation by comparing it with a few commonly used criteria.

This paper describes a method for simulating infant behavior on a virtual environment. This paper classifies the determination factors of the infant's behavior into an internal factor, i.e., the physical and cognitive capabilities estimated from the infant's age, and an external factor, i.e., visual stimulus from the objects around the infant. The authors create infant behavior simulator by modeling the internal and external factors. The authors expects that this kind of simulator will make it possible to analyze infant accidents at home from an engineering point of view and to support designing a room or a home safe for infant.

Recently, recommendation algorithm and services has been studied, which provide appropriate contents or items from a large amount of available contents or services based on personal and contents profiles. So far, content-based filtering and collaborative filtering have widely been used as a recommendation algorithm. They, however, have problems such as unsuitable formalization of human perception and preferences based on content analysis, and extreme sparsity of available data as users typically rate only very few contents. We are now studying a recommendation system based on Bayesian network to solve these issues. In this paper, we first describe requirements for recommendation, then describe model definition policy and an example model based on the results of the questionnaire about movie preference taken from 1600 users.

In-vehicle information systems have acquired more and more content recently. However, retrieving and selecting content pose a safety issue for users, especially drivers. Moreover there is also a convenience issue because of simple user interfaces. It is important for the system to recommend content adapted to users' preferences and situation automatically. In this paper, we show the effectiveness of applying Bayesian networks to user taste model for content recommendation systems in cars. We also present an actual way of building models by information criterions as well as domain knowledge.

In order to reduce a traffic accident radically, it is important to develop such technology that automatically recognizes the situation of the environment or a driver and supports the driver not to lapse into a dangerous state. This paper surveys the techniques which are used for recognition of the situation of the environment or the driver. One of such techniques is to recognize the present situation from the visual information taken with the camera attached in or out of the car. Statistical data analysis is also applicable for extracting information useful for safety support from various sensored information.

In order to support users interactively, We proposed a location-based information support system by using Compact Battery-less Information Terminal (CoBIT). With a CoBIT, we can get location- and orientation-dependent sound information interactively. In this paper, we develop a new location-aware information support infrastracture, which fully make the most of the characteristics of CoBIT and also cooperating with high end personal.terminals. In this paper, a method of detecting and separating speech events in a multiple-sound-source condition using audio and video information is proposed. For detecting speech events, sound localization using a microphone array and human tracking by a stereo vision is combined by a Bayesian network. From the inference results of the Bayesian network, the information on the time and location of speech events can be known in a multiple-sound-source condition. Based on the detected speech event information, a maximum likelihood adaptive beamformer is constructed and the speech signal is separated from background noises and interferences.

A knowledge-based satellite malfunction diagnosis method that shows much promise for future applications is introduced. There are two approaches for diagnosing satellites: the sensor-based approach and knowledge-based approach. The former approach starts from the detection of sensor signals, and infers the malfunction. In contrast, the latter approach starts from the background of the malfunction origin, compares the forecasted satellite state with the observed state, and infers the malfunction. In this study, we propose a new knowledge-based approach that utilizes a database of past malfunction data. First, we compiled 95 malfunction cases related to 54 satellites. Then, the malfunctions were categorized according to the phenomenon, cause, and background among others. Next, we analyzed the categories and found specific properties. We then used a model construction algorithm, Quinlan's C5.0, for the decision tree. Finally, the construction of Bayesian networks is helpful as they execute probabilistic reasoning for malfunction prediction.

In this paper, we propose a probabilistic network-based multi-agent model. For intelligent systems running in a real world, systems have to behave correctly in any possible situations. In this context, multi-agent systems which combine software modules(agents)are promising in nowadays. In order to make actions of multi-agent systems rationally, we discuss about situated agents, decision theoretic approaches, and probabilistic networks. Finally, we propose a probabilistic network based multi-agent model. This model can achieve expected utility maximization and rational behavior with uncertain observations.

The purpose of blind source separation (BSS) is to separate mixed signal from multiple sound sources by using only mixed observation. When applying BSS to acoustic problems such as multiple speech mixed in a room, room reflection reduces preformance of the signal separation. In this report, BSS is combined with subspace method. In the subspace method, the subspace containing dominant direct sounds is extracted while discarding the subspace mainly cotaining reflections. This subspace method is realized by PCA (Principal component analysis) in BSS framework based on the time-delayed decorrelation. As a result of the experiments, reduction of reflection by about 10 dB was obtained in a real environment.

Robot localization problem that is the task to recognize the current position of a robot from sensor inputs is studied. In this paper, we apply PCA regression models, and train the model from the data set obtained experimentaly. For learning stage, the criterion based on entropy is proposed, and we discuss the computational meaning of the criterion, and comparison with Kullback Leibler divergence and S.Thrun's averaged Bayesian localization error. Moreover,in order to realize better estimation, we propose situated feature focusing, and the method combining with local PCA regression models.

On a standard Back Propagation learning method,if the number of hidden units and initialparameters are not suitable for the target function which is approximated by the neural network,we see its learning performance can be bad. This is because the system constructed by the basis functions is uncomplete, when we see the layered neural network as a non-linear functional expansion. In this paper,it is shown that a multi-resolutional structure comes over the uncompleteness of the system through discrete wavelets decompositions, which are constructed by some sigmoidal functions in the layered neural network and also given some coments. We will see that learning performance,in the sence of learning speed and accuracy,of the networks with that structure is better than that of the networks with usually used initial structure of ordinary BP.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the data of patients’ background using machine learning method and to develop an application that could output helpful information. We also tried to construct a new system that will enable to continuously collect and utilize these data using tablet. We included data collection system of dental trauma.
Data collection system was completed. We will continue data collection using this system.
We tried to make decision tree from questionnaire of the mother class using application Weka (Machine Learning Group at the University of Waikato, New Zealand) . Several decision trees were generated, but we could not obtain proper decision trees according with the conventional theory. Since the contents of the sheet were slightly different at each clinic, missing values were likely to influence the analysis. A unified questionnaires style would be necessary. In addition, selection of the objective variable should be more important.

In the research project, we have achieved our goal that we construct the sophisticated methodologies for the design of statistical inference systems based on large scale random fields. The key points of our achievements are to employ some technologies in the cluster variation method in the statistical mechanics. They were not so major techniques of belief propagations in the research felids of probabilistic information processing and statistical learning theory when the present project started in 2006. Our outstanding result in our research project is to publish the book that the general methodology for modeling and designing the Bayesian networks with large scale random fields is systematized.

The purpose of this study is to measure and quantitatively clarify the foot shape changes during walking in order to obtain grounds for designing the custom insole from individual foot shape. Insole can be used to improve the comfort by adjusting the differences between the shapes of the foot and last. For this purpose, a cat walk (BxLxH=100x800x100 [cm]) with a glass plate (35.5x40 [cm]) set in the middle was constructed. Four load cells were set under the glass plate, and the ground reaction force was measured (120 Hz). Video images of the sole were captured with a high frequency video camera (200 Hz) from below the glass plate. An in-house 4D shape measurement system consisting of 12 video cameras was set around the glass plate, and the shapes of four cross sections on the foot were measured (14 Hz). The right foot was measured for 45 subjects during walking and standing with weight distributed equally on both feet. Six measurements were measured from the sole video images, and the heights of the plantar arch and dorsal arch were measured from the instep cross-section data. Measurements at standing were compared with those at the first peak or the bottom of 2 peaks of the ground reaction force. It was found that compared to the measurement at standing, (1) the medial arch length increased but the lateral arch length does not during walking; (2) ground contact breadth at the ball and instep increased at the mid stance phase; (3) height of plantar arch does not decrease during the mid stance phase. The results suggest that the foot shape measured in the standing posture may be used as the basis for designing custom insole.

In the research of turbo codes, many studies have appeared. Although experimental results strongly support the efficacy of turbo codes, further theoretical analysis is necessary. We extend the geometrical framework initiated by Richardson to the information geometrical framework of dual affine connections, focusing on both of the turbo and LDPC decoding algorithms. The framework helps our intuitive 'understanding of the algorithms and opens a new prospect of further analysis. We reveal some properties of these codes in the proposed framework, including the stability and error analysis. Based on the error analysis, we finally propose a correction term for improving the approximation.
Belief propagation (BP) gives exact inference for stochastic models with tree interactions. Its performance has been analyzed separately in many fields, such as AI, statistical physics, information theory, and information geometry. We give a unified framework for understanding BP and related methods and summarizes the results obtained in many fields. In particular, BP and its variants, including tree reparameterization and concave-convex procedure, are reformulated with information-geometrical terms, and their relations to the free energy function are elucidated from an information-geometrical viewpoint. Then a family of new algorithms are proposed The stabilities of the algorithms are analyzed, and methods to accelerate them are investigated.
Bayesian networks can be utilized for constructing a mathematical model of human cognitive and psychological functions, executable on a computer. We propose probabilistic modeling based on the Personal Construct Theory, a basic theory used in cognitive/evaluative structure models for individuals. After extracting a skeleton structure using the Evaluation Grid, Bayesian network model is constructed though statistical learning. By executing a probabilistic reasoning algorithm using belief propagation on the constructed model, our proposal is applied to user-adaptable information systems, information recommendation, car navigation systems, etc.

We conducted research aiming to establish harmonic cognitive state between human and information systems based on statistical techniques, and achieved the following results.
1.We proposed a statistical method of detecting and tracking moving users' speech events using a microphone array,. The method was evaluated with data acquired in real office environment 85% correct rate for speech interval estimation was achieved.
2.We proposed a method of modeling users' utterances in the question answering task which include fixed phrases. We applied the proposed method to a speech-driven question answering system and confirmed that the accuracy of recognizing spoken questions and the task achievement rate were improved significantly. We also proposed a method to collect spontaneously spoken queries for speech-driven information retrieval systems. Using the method we collected spoken queries under the task of NTCIR-3 and NTCIR-4 information retrieval.
3.We proposed a statistical method of estimating users' knowledge level for interactive visitor guide systems. We collected dialog data for 12 users through the Wizard of Oz method. We evaluated the performance of the estimation method for the problem of discriminating users into 4 classes. The correct rate about 87% was achieved.
4.We collected natural spoken dialog of 20 users for the task of controlling home electronic systems. We transcribed and labeled the speech data. These result supports that the statistical methods based on dynamic Bayesian networks are effective for estimating users' status in the various interaction tasks. Future works include improving the estimation methods and evaluating with collected data in detail, investigating the way of using the estimated state for systems decision making and answering, and constructing various dialog systems.
