Harmonic analysis on Hermitian symmetric spaces of tube type is a natural<br />
framework for introducing multivariate Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials. Their<br />
main properties are established in this setting: generating and determinantal<br />
formulae, difference equations. As an application we consider the problem of<br />
evaluating moments related to a multivariate Barnes type integral involving the<br />
    Harish-Chandra $c$-function of a symmetric cone.

Two integral representations of q-analogues of the Hurwitz zeta function are<br />
established. Each integral representation allows us to obtain an analytic<br />
continuation including also a full description of poles and special values at<br />
non-positive integers of the q-analogue of the Hurwitz zeta function, and to<br />
study the classical limit of this q-analogue. All the discussion developed here<br />
is entirely different from the previous work in [4]

  • q-Analogues of the Riemann zeta, the Dirichlet L-functions, and a crystal zeta function

A q-analogue of the Riemann zeta function was studied in [Kaneko et al. 03]<br />
via a certain q-series of two variables. We introduce in a similar way a<br />
q-analogue of the Dirichlet L-functions and make a detailed study of them,<br />
including some issues concerning the classical limit of the q-analogue left<br />
open in [Kaneko et al. 03]. We also examine a &quot;crystal&quot; limit (i.e. q-&gt;0)<br />
behavior of the q-analogue. The q-trajectories of the trivial and essential<br />
zeros of the Riemann zeta function are investigated numerically when q moves in<br />
(0,1]. Moreover, conjectures for the crystal limit behavior of zeros of the<br />
    q-analogue are given.

The initial purpose of this paper is to provide a combinatorial proof of the<br />
minor summation formula of Pfaffians based on the lattice path method. There we<br />
related Pl\&quot;ucker relations with the minor summation formula of Pfaffians to<br />
simplify its proof by lattice paths. The second aim is to find a various<br />
applications of the minor summation formula. First we studied a variant of the<br />
Sundquist formula established in J. Alg. Combin. {\bf 5} (1996). Next we gave a<br />
    simple proof of Kawanaka&#039;s formula concerning a $q$-series identity involving<br />
    Schur functions in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 36} (1999). We also establish a certain<br />
identity similar to the Kawanaka formula, and give a combinatorial proof of the<br />
determinant version of his formula in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 38} (2001).

The first theme of the project was to understand, by employing a suitable group action, the mysterious derivation/determination of geodesics on multivariate normal models given by Erisken in 1987. This was completely achieved by Hiroto Inoue, a PhD course student under my supervision. Actually, he proved that the normal model can be realized as a submanifold of a certain (pre-conjectured) Riemannian symmetric space (cone) by Riemann submersion and the mysterious derivation of geodesic follows from this fact. This result may provide a new understanding for the elliptical models including normal models. The second is expanding the representation theoretic study of α-determinant, which was originally defined in the framework of statistical and probability theory, we explored the group-subgroup determinant theory. Moreover, as the third theme, we obtain the fundamental results of multivariate Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials in the framework of harmonic analysis on Hermite symmetric spaces.

1.We described the special value at s=4 of the spectral zeta function of the non-commutative harmonic oscillator (NcHO) by introducing the notion of residual modular forms, which is a generalization of Eichler integrals. With this investigation, we introduced the periodic Eichler cohomology groups and determined the structure of certain congruence subgroups of SL_2(Z).
2.We showed a complete description of the eigenvalue problem for NcHO, which is defined by a matrix-valued self-adjoint ordinary differential operator, in terms of Heun's ordinary differential equations (Only the odd case was given by Ochiai in 2001). As a by-product, using the monodromy representation of Heun's ODEs, we proved that the multiplicity of the eigenvalue of NcHO is at most two.
3.We described a connection between the quantum Rabi model and NcHO, employing principal series of sl2 and confluent procedure of Heun ODE.

The subject of this research is an integral and a sum arising in representation theory. We have obtained the differential equations, functional equations among these integrals and sums, and their expressions by a known special function in several cases. This frame is also efficient to work on the spectral problems of a systems of linear differential equation, a spectral zeta function as generating functions, and a multiple zeta function as a sum. This work is a step to a post-hypergeometric systems.

There has been a conjecture concerning the gaps between the degrees of the basic relative invariants associated to homogeneous cones and the symmetry of the corresponding homogeneous tube domains (Siegel domains of the first kind). However, we found a homogeneous cone that denies the conjecture. Moreover such a cone is found in any rank greater than or equal to 3. We also discovered a homogeneous cone of arbitrary rank greater than or equal to 3 that is linearly isomorphic to its dual cone. Further, we proved that the basic relative invariants are exactly the irreducible factors of the determinant of the right multiplication operators in the complexification of the clan corresponding to the cone. In the case of symmetric cone, we computed an actual decomposition of that determinant into irreducible factors.

Theory of special functions of non-commutative variables is a framework for us to understand deeply the dual pairs, which is a sort of revival of the classical invariant theory. The aim of the research is to link each other the three theories on special functions, invariants, and representations, to throw a new light to the mathematical world under the non-commutativity. In the center of our study, we have the Capelli identities, the equalities of the invariant differential operators, which arise from the representations of the centers of the universal enveloping algebras. Around the Capelli identities, we found many interesting phenomena caused from the transition from commutative theories to non-commutativeones. And even behind the usual commutative theories, we often found the dominating non-commutative variables.
For the goal to obtain the ultimate Capelli type identities, we made a big progress through the new ideas which combine the non-commutative matrix elements, the generalization of the notion of transfer, symbolic method, and the method of generating functions. Though the program has not been accomplished, the results we had will be very useful for the understanding of the ultimate Capelli identities.
An important example is in the treatment of Euler's pentagonal number theorem, which we understand a trace identity of matrices of infinite size. In there, we discover the fact that some identities generalizing the pentagonal number theorem are indeed sort of summation formula for q-hypergeometric series. This point of view will lead us to a new link between the representation theory and invariant theory through the infinite-dimensional spaces.
Another important discovery is the algebra, which is a very useful toolfor the higher Capelli identities as the non-commutative formal variables. This is done by M. Itoh, an investigator of this research.

The purpose of this research project was to take a detailed study of zeta functions and duality-"infinite sum = infinite product" based on the trace formulas viewpoint. During the period we obtained the following results :Study on the spectral zeta function for the non-commutative harmonic oscillators :1)We show that the differential equation satisfied by the generating function w_2(t) of the Ap'ery like numbers arising from the evaluation of the special values at 2 of the spectral zeta function is the Picard-Fuchs equation for the universal family of elliptic curves equipped with rational 4 torsion. The parameter t of this family can be interpreted as a modular function for a certain congruent subgroup of level 4. (+. K.Kimoto)2)A higher value analogue is formulated and is shown to be related to some quisi-modular form (+. K.Kimoto).3)Some estimation for the nth eigen-values of the non-commutative harmonic oscillators are obtained (+ T.Ichinose)Study on some q-analogue of zeta functions :1)Contour integral representation of the q-analogue of the Riemann and Hurwitz zeta functions are obtained. The representation is an q-analogue of the one Riemann discovered. As an application, special values of the q-analogue of the zeta function can be easily obtained. (+ Y.Yamasaki).2)Based on the Jackson integral, some integral representation which is different from the above is obtained (+ K.Mimachi, N.Kurokawa).Milnor's type multiple gamma and sine functions are formulated in terms of the zeta regularization and their analytic properties are derived. Moreover, the special values are studied. (+ N.Kurokawa, H.Ochiai). Umeda studies some intrinsic relation between special functions and non-commutative invariants, Kaneko develops the study of quisi-modular form and special values, and Kajiwara studies the q-Painleve IV equation from symmetry.

The main object of the research is to find the group theoretical background behind the world of special functions and to utilize the symonetious for the special functions. Among them the theory of "dual pairs" is the key to our study, which explains many phenomina from the view-point of representation theory and the theory of invariants. We have Capilli type identities, now commtative harnomic oscillatws as the typical investizations where and pains work very well as the griding principle. On the other hand, for the hyprogeinctic from Rons and Pain lene transcendents, we have claified the grop gymmetric behind them. The helps a lot for deeper investigations of these fnctions.
As for the Capelli type identities, we got many interesting formlas including permanets and Pfuffians, not only for the determinants, Furthermore we found some Capelli type identity corresponding to the "group determinant". The invariant theoretic backgroud conneits these identities to some sphenicel functions. There are sort of unification of various objects.

The aim of this research project was to make a detailed study of dualities and of "infinite surn = infinite product" identities from the trace formula viewpoint, During the period we obtained good results as follows :1) The head investigator Wakayama and the investigator Ishikawa obtained quite a number of generalizations of the so-called Littlewood formulas concerning the generating functions of Schur ploynomials. They also established various formulas relating the enumerative combinatorics and represenattions of the classical groups.2) The head investigator and the collaborator Umeda (Kyoto) developed the theory of the Dual Pair, especially the theory of spherical harmonics under the quantum group symmetries. Moreover, he gave an answer of the open problem concerning the explicit construction of skew Capelli elements with his student Kinoshita.3) The head investigator and the collaborator Sarnak (Princeton) proved some density theorem for the distribution of the conjugacy class of the holonomy group on negatively-curved Riemannian locally symmmetric spaces. In order to develop this result to more precised way, the investigator Midorikawa studied and obtained an explicit relation among characters of certain representations of semi simple Lie groups. Also the investigator Kon-no constructed certain important automorphic representations of the unipotent type. Related to the trace formula, the head investigator and the collaborator Kurokawa (TIT) proved the integral represenattion of the Selberg zeta function.4) The head investigator and the collaborator Parmeggiani (Bologna) introduced the new system of differntial equation called by the non-commutative harmonic oscillator and gave a complete description of the spectrum by means of continued fractions and the oscillator represenations.5) The investigator Wakimoto made a very precised study of the represenattion of the affine Lie algebra, the super Lie algebra and vertex operators by means of modular transforms. Finally, on behalf of the investigators the head investigator would like to express their special thanks to this support.

The purpose of the present research project is to clarify a meaninmg of several important identities of the form "infinite product=infinite sum" by an evaluation of various determinants via the ideas : 1) the minor summation formula of Pfaffians, 2) dual pairs, 3) a precise study of (Selberg) trace formulas.(1) We developed the theory of dual pairs in a context of quantum groups (Noumi-Umeda-W., Comp.Math., 104,1996) and extended it to general rank cases (Umeda-W. ; Another look at the differential operators on the quantum matrix spaces and its applications/96). Further, we gave a new proof of Littlewood's formulas for characters by enumerative combinatorics using Pfaffinas and established several identities which involve Littilewood's formulas (Ishikawa-Okada-W., J.Alg., 183,1996). We obtained also generating functions including various symmetric functions and, in particular, gave a representation theoretic interpretation of the product representation of elliptic theta (Ishikawa-W. ; Applications of minor summation formulas II,Pfaffians and Schur Polynomials/96, New Schur function series/97).(2) We studied the trace formula on negatively curved locally symmetric Riemannian spaces in an explicit way and solved a problem concerning an equidistribution property of holonomy as an application of it (Sarnak-W. ; Equidistribution of holonomy about closed geodesics/96). As a biproduct, I got a ceratin remarkable estimate concerning an infinitesimal character of the (restricted) holonomy group (An in-equality of infinitesimal characters related to the lowest K-types of discrete series/97). Parallely, the investigator Yoshida studied the Kloosterman zeta for obtaining a good estimate of a remainder term with respect to a distribution of closed geodesic on a Riemann surface (Remarks on the Kuznetov trace formula, to appaer). Also Kon-no studied a Langlands' functoriality for automorphic representations on some classical groups of rank 2 (The residual spectrum of U (2,2) & Sp (2), to appear) and the precise study of trace formula for an explicit description of cuspidal automorphic representations (The Arthur trace formula for GSp (2) I/97). To help these studies, Inoue established a realization and an irreducible decomposition of holomorhically induced representation of some solvable group of affine transformations which act simply transitively on a homogeneous Siegel domain.

Though the Gauus's hypergeometric differential equation has a fruitful relationship with the theory of automorphic forms and differential geometry, the theory of ordinary differential equations in complex variables has been restricted to analytic and local studies. The present research aims generalizations and specializations of the Gauss's theory regarding the hypergeometric differential equation as the uniformizing equation of the obifolds with three singular points on the projective line. In 1994 and 1995, we got the following results.
    (1) Equivalence problem for projective submanifolds. Let D be a symmetric space equivariantly embedded in the minimal dimensional projective space P^N. We consider the problem : For a submanifold V * P^N, state a differential geometrical condition for V so that it is locally projectively equivalent to D.This problem is crucial for studing uniformizing equations. When D is of type VI (i.e.a hyperquadric), the problem is solved.
    (2) Geometry of configuration spaces. Let X (k, n) be the configuration space of n points in general postion in P^<k-1>. This space is one of the main objects in algebraic geometry in the beginning of this century. Since this space turned out to be the natural domain of definition of the hypergeometric differential equation of type (k, n), this became a hot topic again. We clarified the combinatorial topological properties of the configuration spaces of type (2, n) and (3,6).
    (3) Modular interpretation of configuration spaces. Problem : Is a configuration space isomorphic to the quotient space D/GAMMA for a symmetric domain D and a discontinuous group GAMMA? There are many studies about the space X (2, n). We succeeded to solve positively the problem for X (3,6),
    (4) Intersection theory for twisted (co) homolgies. We established the intersection thery for twisted homolgies. We are about to establish it for twisted cohomolgies. Comparison of (co) homolgies of a variety and those of a branched covering is also studied.
    (5) Studies of Selberg-type integrals. A kind of Selberg-type integrals is studied. The theory stated in (4) is useful.
    (6) The image of the hypergeometric maps. We proved that if (k, n) * (2, n), (3,6), then the image of the hypergeometric map is not locally projective equivalent to the Grassmannian embedded in the projective space by the Plucker map. This negative result destroyed the dream of many mathematicians.
