    There are many situations that the difference between imagery(subjective) and actual(objective) movements occurs in skiing. In traditionally utilized feedback method with video, it is impossible to get real time visual feedback. In the present study, we developed the system for real-time visual feedback during skiing, and evaluated the availability of the system. The movie captured by a video-operator who followed a subject was projected in online through the smartglass that the subjects wore. Sixteen skiers and snowboarders with various skill levels tried this system.We interviewed subjects immediately after the trial.Their impression was that getting real-time visual feedback of their own motion utilizing the present system, which helped them modify their performance in middle and high level subjects. However, beginner subjects could not afford to use the feedback information. Since the present system had unavoidable time-delay of 186 ms, it was suggested that it is not suitable for learning short turn. Therefore, the present examination suggested that this real-time visual feedback system can be effective in learning long turn for middle and high level skier who have clear goal images of their performance.

    <p>Hemiplegic patients often have reduced typing speed due to finger paralysis. Our motivation is to develop a keyboard that enables their typing speed to increase. For this purpose, we have developed a three-dimensional keyboard that reduces the distance that fingers move while typing. In this paper, our objective was to construct the finger model that combines the motion speed and muscle fatigue for design of keyboard that can be typed with fast motion speed and low muscle fatigue. In experiment, we measured the finger position using a magnetic 3D motion device and EMG when the participant pressed the proposed key. The experiment was carried out in a variety of the finger postures. We qualified the motion speed and muscle fatigue at each joint angle. Then, we weighted and combined two of the objective functions. We found out the Pareto solution and get an effective keyboard design straight. In the future, we verify the typing speed and finger muscle fatigue during typing the three-dimensional keyboard that is designed based on our finger model.</p>

    Route bundling implies compounding multiple routes in a way that anchoring points at intermediate locations minimize a global distance metric to obtain a tree-like structure where the roots of the tree (anchoring points) serve as coordinating locus for the joint transport of information, goods and people. Route bundling is a relevant conceptual construct in a number of path-planning scenarios where the resources and means of transport are scarce/expensive, or where the environments are inherently hard to navigate due to limited space. In this paper we propose a method for searching optimal route bundles based on a self-adaptive class of Differential Evolution using a convex representation. Rigorous computational experiments in scenarios with and without convex obstacles show the feasibility and efficiency of our approach.

    This paper presents a feasibility study of a brain-machine interface system to assist repetitive facilitation exercise. Repetitive facilitation exercise is an effective rehabilitation method for patients with hemiplegia. In repetitive facilitation exercise, a therapist stimulates the paralyzed part of the patient while motor commands run along the nerve pathway. However, successful repetitive facilitation exercise is difficult to achieve and even a skilled practitioner cannot detect when a motor command occurs in patient's brain. We proposed a brain-machine interface system for automatically detecting motor commands and stimulating the paralyzed part of a patient. To determine motor commands from patient electroencephalogram (EEG) data, we measured the movement-related cortical potential (MRCP) and constructed a support vector machine system. In this paper, we validated the prediction timing of the system at the highest accuracy by the system using EEG and MRCP. In the experiments, we measured the EEG when the participant bent their elbow when prompted to do so. We analyzed the EEG data using a cross-validation method. We found that the average accuracy was 72.9% and the highest at the prediction timing 280 ms. We conclude that 280 ms is the most suitable to predict the judgment that a patient intends to exercise or not.

    This paper presents a novel method for evaluating a user’s feelings in a master–slave robotic surgical operation. By measuring brain activity, an engineer can quantify the user’s feelings during the operation from a cognitive science perspective. In contrast with conventional methods, the engineer can consider the user’s feelings in designing a robot with intuitive operability. The brain activity measurement method is well suited to not only surgical robots but also all master–slave robots. The objective of this paper is to determine the optimal distance between the slave and endoscope using brain activity measurement. We find that brain activity shows a significant peak when the user controls the virtual arm in a position matching the most natural hand-eye coordination.

    In recent years, development of the automated driving system is aggressively promoted for the purpose of reducing burden of drivers and for the enhanced safety. Transferring the intention of the driver to the automobile control, such as to stop on the way or to change destinations, is essential even if a direct control from the driver is no longer necessary. Therefore, an in-car interface to conduct intention of the driver promptly and accurately to the automobile control is needed. In this paper, we proposed an interface which recognizes the intended target of the driver using gestures and speech recognition. The speech recognition technology was previously developed. Hence, we developed an interface to recognize the direction in which the driver is pointing toward from the gesture. We hypothesize that we can estimate the direction in which the driver is pointing toward from the fingertip and eye position. Verification using three-dimensional motion analysis system showed that it is possible to recognize the direction of the object with a maximum error of 5.5° and an average error of 1.2°. After verifying the hypothesis, a position measurement device that integrates Leap Motion® and KINECT®, the non-contact sensor, was developed to recognize gestures of the driver in the automobiles. The maximum error of the angle recognition in accordance with the present device was 16.1°. However, the value of the error exists only in a certain interval. For this reason, by taking into account the movement of the eye position, and provide adequate tuning for each driver, proposed interface is sufficiently usable.

    In this study, we developed a manipulator that induces a horizontal surface rotation motion of the shoulder to change the phase difference between the shoulder and the upper arm. Furthermore, we constructed an algorithm that estimates the time of heel contact during walking on the treadmill and the angle of the shoulder in the axial rotation was controlled. Accuracy of the proposed algorithm was verified through experimental data. As a result, the angle could be controlled with as much accuracy as in young healthy individuals where the angle varies for each gait cycle.

    This paper presents a novel sports training system. We developed a visual real-time feedback system that directly transmits a bird's eye view from a drone camera to a player's eyes. Individual physical ability, experience and intuition is important; however, in team sports such as baseball, football and volleyball, players need to perform spatial cognition such that they immediately understand where they, their teammates and their opponents are on the field as if they could see it from a bird's eye view. The objective is to validate the feasibility of the bird's eye view feedback system. In an experiment, nine participants moved and stood between two experimenters as a cut-off man with or without the system. Using the system produced significantly less error than with no system (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this bird's eye view feedback system can improve human spatial cognition.

    Surgical robots have undergone considerable improvement by only mechanical performance in recent years, but the intuitive operability has not been quantitatively evaluated. This paper presents the brain activity measurement method to determine intuitive operability to design a robot with intuitive operability. The objective of this paper is to validate that the specific brain area which is the intraparietal sulcus activates if the user controls the slave manipulator positioned intuitively.In the experiments, while subjects controlled the hand controller to position the tip of the virtual slave manipulator on the target in the surgical simulator, we measured the brain activity through the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (f-NIRS). We carried out the experiment a number of times with the virtual slave manipulator configured in a variety of ways. The results show that the brain activated significantly with the specific slave manipulator configured such that the angles matched the human body. We conclude that the how strongly human feels the manipulator belongs to his body affects hand-eye coordination, which is related to visual and somatic sense feedback.

    <p>In this study we propose the use of spiral folding to deploy automotive airbags, and propose the folding pattern considering creases, which has the potential benefits to diminish friction during storage and bring benefits to faster deployment. Our preliminary experiments show the feasibility to deploy airbags by using the spiral folding approach, and the reasonable consistency between the modeling and real-world deployment. Our results offer preliminary insights for further study on spiral folding mechanisms and safest deployment performance.</p>

    <p>In this paper, in order to develop a structure capable of coping with trend in large scale and the diversification of the space structure in recent years. We will propose a moving mechanism using electromagnets and permanent magnets. We make a real machine as a self-construction system that automatically joins and assembles to the target shape after dividing a large space structure into some modules and conveying them to outer space over several times. We confirmed the reliability of moving mechanism for modular space structure proposed in this paper by giving a success rate of movement completion through an experiment.</p>

    <p>Fall in stair is a serious problem. The misidentification of the stair height is one of the cause of fall. This paper presents an optical illusion induction system with augmented reality for support of ascending and descending stairs. The head-mounted display shows the vertical on the stair edge when ascending or horizontal line on the stair surface when descending. Human showed the AR system to perceive the stair higher when ascending or narrower when descending than actual. We constructed the model of the foot clearance by optical illusion based on the contrast sensitive function approximated with Gaussian function. In experiment, 10 participants climb and descend with AR system while we measured the foot trajectory. As a result, the coefficient of determination is over 0.7 when ascending, over 0.6 when descending in all participants. Furthermore, the toe height is significant higher during AR system than before in ascending (p<0.05). And, the horizontal toe distance is significant lower during AR system than before in descending (p<0.05). We concluded that the AR system make the participants perceive the optical illusion so the foot clearance increased enough.</p>

    <p>Lunar cave is appropriate to making the moon base because the cave has high tightness, constant temperature, and safety from meteorite and radiation. The sampling in lunar cave is necessary to understand inside so there are many approaches studied. However, there is few studies about the approach method of sampling from the ceiling of vertical hole. This paper presents a sample acquisition method from the ceiling of vertical hole. The master unit throw the handset from the outside of the vertical hole, control the handset vibration by just pulling the wire, and get the sample by colliding the handset with the ceiling. We validated to control the handset with parametric excitation theory from the experiment. As a result, the average error rate of the maximum deflection angle was 30.9%, and the average error rate of the time to reach the maximum deflection angle was 1.88%. We concluded that the winding timing of the wire is mostly consistent with the theoretical value.</p>

    <p>Catheter ablation is a method to treat arrhythmias which is an abnormal contractile movement of the myocardial. While this treatment is minimally invasive, it may lead to complications such as vascular injury, cardiac puncture and cardiac tamponade. The cause of this problem is considered as the difficulty for the surgeon to intuitively operate the catheter tip. To improve accuracy of catheter ablation treatment, we developed a master-slave system that considers the structure of a human wrist for surgeons to operate a catheter remotely. A master and a slave robot made it possible to operate the catheter in 2 DoF which is the inserting and the twisting operation. Two experiments were carried out, which is to determine the insertion displacement of the slave robot and to obtain the correspondent relationship between the master and the slave robot.</p>

    The differentiation and the integration of products are the essential procedures for product innovation. To understand the product innovation, the approaches using S-curve theory, which explain the evolution of a technological system, have been effective. However, the S-curve theory has the disadvantage that the validity of the analysis depends greatly on the number of data. In this paper, we propose a novel method for measuring and predicting the technological innovation and the product evolution based on the S-curve and wavelet transform to solve the problem. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, we will conduct a case study using patents of air purifiers. Furthermore, we will define and support the differentiation and the integration of the mechanical structure using the proposed method. Our analysis shows that the differentiation and the integration of the mechanical structure occur as a life cycle extension after the main technologies enter the declining phase. Therefore, the incidental technologies should be introduced at the beginning of the declining phase of the main technologies.

    <p>For holding the forearm artificial arm, the patient must pull and tighten a part of the belt. However, the pressure distribution becomes heterogeneous so that the patient could become the bedsore. In this paper, our motivation is to develop the upper arm cuff that can distribute the even pressure. We optimized the upper arm cuff design applied the compliant mechanism and compare with the conventional design to validate the feasibility study of the proposed design. We optimized the upper arm cuff based on the Dr. Kanno's design as the initial shape. In experiment, we measured the displacement of the structure. As a result, we identified the consistency between the experimental value and the optimized solution. Then, we measured the internal pressure using a variation index. We concluded that the compliant mechanism design could decrease the pressure dispersion more significantly than conventional design.</p>

    <p>This paper presents a novel evaluation method for an intuitive operability of master-slave surgical robot. Surgical robot is controlled to match the posture of the arm tip between master-slave, however, it's impossible to match the posture because strict sensing is difficult and the error accumulates during manipulation. The objective is to validate the change of the brain activation against the change of error of posture in the arm tip. In experiment, participants controlled the virtual master-slave simulation. As a result, the brain activity decreased when the error of posture in the arm tip increased. The paper concluded that the 30° would be the acceptable error because when the error was smaller than 30° , the brain activated same as he relaxed.</p>

    We analyzed the brain activity of surgeon manipulating surgical robot to evaluate the intuitive operability. However, the variation in brain activity generates in trial and individual difference. Thus, it is difficult to decide the one solution reasonably. In this study, we measured the brain activity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy and clarified the structure of the surgical robot which surgeons manipulated intuitively using the probability of brain activity.

    Large space structures generally have a part-like assembly procedure due to the limitations of vehicles such as rockets. However, by enabling transportation in a flexible manner in a state where the shape suitable for transportation of powder, liquid, etc. can be changed, and stiffening in space, construction of a large space structure becomes efficien. In this research, for the purpose of constructing powder molding technology in space, create a structure in an environment where thermal load is applied in vacuum using polyetherimide which is a kind of conductive material and super engineering plastic. Demonstrated and examined. About 10% improvement in strength was seen by producing in space environment.

    In this study, we designed the structure of the surgical robot, which has the least burden on the operator's muscle activity. Since the surgical robot has a physical different structure from the human body,there is a "different embodiment". the trajectory becomes redundant and unnecessary force occurs at the movement range limit. To solve these problems, while the participant controlled the virtual surgical simulator, we measured the 3D position by motion capture system. We compared these data to human muscle activity model and clarify the loaded muscle point.
