Flourishment is conceptualized as an engagement experience associated with eudaimonic flourishing, a component of psychological wellbeing. Analogous to nourishment, flourishment drives a sense of being one’s authentic best self (eudaimonia) in a way that can be deliberately encouraged and registered within health systems, and their records, by design. Here, frameworks of social neuroscience, social fields, and inclusive human-centred design are elaborated into a framework synthesis for guiding systemic design of a system for registering evidence of patient experienced flourishment. Systemic design considerations are described for a registry of personal records of eudaimonic flourishment and enhanced resilience (PREFER). These are illustrated through description of patient engagement with the suggested PREFER registry elements. Their use in promoting a virtuous cycle of flourishment transactions within a system of patient-centred collaborative care for a person living with chronic pain is described.

Dark patterns and deceptive designs (DPs), the tricky and coercive user interface elements found in everyday digital products, are a societal, economic, and ethical challenge. In this research, I aim to untangle the nature of DPs in Japan, discover how are they perceived by professionals and the public, and explore how they can be redressed. To this end, I will carry out exploratory and confirmatory research on the Japanese consumer context. I will develop and evaluate educational and protection platforms: a training system to “inoculate” individuals against DPs and a countermeasures system for real-time protection. The scientific and practical contributions will be a human-centered risk-benefit framework, culturally-sensitive knowledge about DPs, and platforms for enabling a future free of deception.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has placed severe restrictions on the planned research, leading to delays and changes in the research plan. Nevertheless, several research objectives and accomplishments can be reported. As per the plan, a team of student researchers and developers was assembled. Ethics was obtained. Recruitment was carried out using online participant pools and local organizations. In particular, three older adults were recruited to provide voice recordings, which are now being processed. As per the COVID-19 adjusted plan, one modern ageism instrument was translated to Japanese from English. Preliminary validation was carried out in two studies (n = 157). The results of the first study were presented at The 8th Asian Conference on Aging & Gerontology (AGen2022) and published in a white paper. Instead of interviews and co-design workshops, an online elicitation study using a survey format was conducted with Japanese and English speakers (n = 130). The results are currently under review in a journal. Finally, the text-to-speech (TTS) part of the voice assistant has been developed.
