    This study examined perceptions of Japanese female students' on leadership qualitiesdisplayed by superior leaders in mono- and multicultural groups. The results revealed thatfor both mono- and multicultural groups, their personal qualities related to distinctivecharacteristics, which were superior to those of other members, were perceived as leadershipqualities, along with attitudes and behaviors that promote interaction with members andorganizations. For monocultural groups, abilities, attitudes, and behaviors specificallyassociated with critical moments and emergencies, rather than normal situations, wereperceived as leadership qualities, whereas for multicultural gr oups, leadership was perceived interms of coordination capability and attitudes in cross-cultura l cooperative activities.

    <p>This study aimed to conduct an inter-age comparison of Taiwanese people's national consciousness and their image of Japan and to investigate the relationship between image of Japan, sense of national consciousness and attributes and contact frequency with Japan-related information. A questionnaire survey was conducted via the internet between November and December 2013 of 525 respondents aged from their twenties to fifties living in Taiwan. As a result, four factors were identified for national consciousness, namely: "pride as a Taiwanese person", "assertion of Taiwan's superiority in international society", "openness towards foreign countries", and "low self-engagement towards foreign countries". In the inter-age comparison, it was shown that "pride as a Taiwanese person" and "assertion of Taiwan's superiority in international society" were higher for respondents in their fifties than for those in their twenties. Six factors were identified for image of Japan, namely: "affinity openness", "collective innovation", "aggressiveness", "inhibition of self-expression", "frequent natural disasters", and "importance of individuality". In the inter-age comparison, it was shown that "affinity openness" was highest for respondents in their twenties and lowest for those in their forties. Images of "aggressiveness" and "frequent natural disasters" were more likely the older the age group. As a result of a multiple regression analysis of the relationship between image of Japan and national consciousness it was found that "openness towards foreign countries" in national consciousness had a common effect on "collective innovation", "inhibition of self-expression", "frequent natural disasters", and "importance of individuality" in image of Japan. In cases when "contact frequency with Japan-related information" was high images of "affinity openness" and "collective innovation" were more likely. For older respondents there was a tendency to have low "affinity openness" and to be likely to perceive that Japan is "aggressive" and has many "natural disasters".</p>

    This research aims to examine the relationship between Chinese students' causal attribution\toward dissatisfaction of their association with Japanese students. I conducted a questionnaire\survey of 80 Chinese students and completed a statistical analysis of the data obtained. As a\result of the examination, 4 factors 'familiarity' , 'collectivistic advancement' 'authenticity, \and 'openness, from Image of Japanese were found by factor analysis. The results suggested\that Chinese students who attribute the cause to themselves and those who are relatively older\are more likely to have familiarity image to Japanese, while th at Chinese students who attribute\the cause to Japanese students are more likely to have authenti city image to Japanese.

    This survey was conducted on foreign students in Tokyo neighborhoods a year after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The purpose was to understand what state they were in with regard to psychological/behavioral changes, daily life satisfaction and needs of support soon after the Earthquake, by focusing on the differences between affected and unaffected students. The results of the survey, among which 102 students affected and 48 unaffected, showed that the affected complained more about mental or physical disorders, distrusted public organizations in Japan, desired to go back to their home countries and were anxious of the Earthquake. Concerning daily life satisfaction, the affected were significantly less satisfied in the following categories: physical health, mental health, interpersonal relationship, studies and academic researches, and daily life. According to the free description analysis, four different needs for support were identified among the affected students soon after the Earthquake; support from their schools, state and local governments, home countries/embassies and close friends/relations.

  • Chinese female students' process of friendship formation with Japanese students Reviewed

    This study analyzes Chinese female students'process of friendship formation with Japanese students. I conducted semi-structured interviews with seven Chinese female students and analyzed the data using qualitative synthesis method (KJ method). First, the results indicated that their process of friendship formation was composed of "concern to the friendship formation,""expectations of association with Japanese students,""negative perceptions toward association with Japanese students,""coping behaviors of the negative perceptions,"and "positive perceptions toward association with Japanese students."Second, the process of friendship formation with Japanese students was classified as follows : Type 1-positive concern toward friendship formation and the friendship that has been formed ; Type 2-positive concern toward friendship formation and the friendship that has not been formed ; Type 3-negative concern toward friendship formation and the friendship that has been formed ; Type 4-negative concern toward friendship formation and the friendship that has not been formed. Type4was compared with all other types. The results indicated that the factors of promotion toward forming friendships include institutional support systems of universities and their positive attitude toward friendship formation between Chinese and Japanese students.

    This research aims to examine the relationship between Chinese students ' negative perceptions, dissatisfaction, and causal attribution toward their association with Japanese students. I conducted a questionnaire survey of 119 Chinese students and completed a statistical analysis of the data obtained. In the first part of the study, I investigated the relationship between the Chinese students ' negative perceptions and their level of satisfaction concerning friendships. The results indicated that the level of satisfaction is influenced by negative perceptions of ' a sense of discrimination ' and ' a failure of exchange'. In the second part of the study, I investigated the relationship between a student's negative perceptions and the causal attribution for dissatisfaction with their friendships. The results indicated that the 'social external factor' was influenced by the negative perceptions of 'a failure of exchange', while the 'personal inner factor' was influenced by 'a sense of discrimination' and 'the current year at university'. Additionally, the 'personal external factor' was influenced by 'a sense of discrimination'. Together, these findings suggest the importance of creating an environment to facilitate positive cross-cultural exchange on campus. Moreover, it is demonstrated that when Chinese students feel discriminated against, it is difficult for them to make friendships.

    We have developed a dictation practice website (Dictation for Every Day; D4E) for beginner-level learners of Japanese to help them acquire conversational patterns and improve their listening skills. This is an online system for continuous daily dictation practice of 10 sentences taking about 3 minutes each. As a result of the development and trial of the system, it was confirmed that D4E is an environment that not only improves listening skills, but also provides natural input, facilitates continuous practice, and correction by learners themselves. It, therefore, allows learners to practice dictation as self-study.

    This paper reports on the Online Nihongo Space implemented to provide language support to new and current international students facing difficulties coming to Japan or the university under the state of emergency declared in April 2020. An online questionnaire was conducted and 54 responses were collected in the form of satisfaction ratings and feedback. Participants reported being generally satisfied, and data analysis using the KJ method yielded three main categories: "positive evaluation," "providing learning and communication opportunities," and "future suggestions." This shows that the Online Nihongo Space functioned as a virtual space for connecting with other students for collaborative learning.

    In this paper, a report is provided from the standpoint of the coordinator with regard to hybrid international exchange projects implemented simultaneously online and in person by the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The questionnaires administered to the participants showed that these activities enabled them to easily learn about the Japanese culture and that opportunities were provided for deeper exchange by means of group work, both online and in person. It was also suggested that the exchange was promoted by teaching assistants through facilitation.
