In designing to improve the quality of childcare, it is necessary to empathize with stakeholders in daycare. In the childcare field, there is many context-dependent know-how that only the people in the field can understand. It is essential to involve designers and non-designers in co-designing. The recent development of information and communication technologies (ICT) has allowed the acquisition of in-situ behavioral data, which is defined as “a collection of specific information, referring to data from sensors, self-logging, telemetry, or social networks which capture people’s behaviors and patterns”. Although behavioral data has not been widely used in design, co-designers' behavioral data has the potential to play an important role in supporting co-design by providing a common ground. Developing tools to support reflection uses the field’s data. The materials provide a common understanding of the scene to be considered for reflection. However, selecting which scenes to reflect and post-data collection processing requires huge efforts. Thus, there is a need to automate the scene selection based on data-driven detection of the childcare contexts. As a step towards data-driven co-design workshops, this study aims to clarify the influence of scene extraction methods on reflection by childcare workers. We collected video recordings in a room mainly used for caring for one-year-old children at a nursery in Japan. The videos used for the workshops were recorded in two ways: upon staff’s individual request, namely self-logging, during caring, and automatic scene detection based on the sound levels. One staff member participated in the data collection. As a result, 16 videos were collected, and then the staff selected the two best videos for the workshop. Two videos were excerpted from a video having been captured whole day depending on the sound level. The excerpted videos had the largest sound level during the day.The workshop was conducted with eight childcare workers. The purpose of the session was to discuss daily childcare and how to take care of children and gain new insights. The participants reflected on each video of self-logged daycare scenes, and then on the auto excerpted videos. The reflection includes, for example, what happened, how the staff behaved, how the staff should have acted, and why the staff could or could not act ideally in the videos. The recorded videos were categorized, and the participants’ perceptions were transcribed for analysis. The videos of daycare were categorized into 9 categories based on video content, and brief notes attached to a staff recording request. The quotes related to video-based reflection and possible data for supporting reflection are extracted from the transcript of the workshop. Overall, the results imply that behavioral data and auto-excerpted recorded videos have huge potential to be used for reflection. The next step of this research is to clarify the issue and benefit of using behavioral data for co-design by conducting a workshop among designers and daycare staff to improve the quality of childcare.

    Abstract

This paper aims to identify gaps between the reflection frameworks and students’ practice. Through a systematic literature review (PRISMA) and a qualitative survey of students, 12 reflection frameworks were reviewed, and the 13 challenges students faced at design projects in two design schools were identified. The results indicate three gaps between theory and students’ practice: skills of designers, granularities of reflection items, and supports of bridging reflection to next actions. This study provides insights for future development of support tools to bridge the gaps in design education.

    Abstract

This study proposes a diary method enabled with IoT sensors for user research in design. It addresses the limitations of diary methods by incorporating sensor data to trigger user self-reports. The focus is on how sensor data influences self-reports and designers' perceptions. Results show that sensor-enabled diaries offer more diverse content and overview of users’ lives and designers perceived the proposed method potentials, suggesting significant potential for IoT in user research.

    Abstract

This research proposes a virtual environment (VE) for co-designing in early childhood education and care settings using a social VR platform with 3D-scanned childcare rooms. Co-design workshops were analyzed focusing on perceived presence and experience and workshop outcomes. The results indicate a high level of presence in the VE, with unique advantages like facilitating 3D prototyping. However, challenges such as unbalanced prototyping tools distribution were also noted. The study highlights the potential of VEs with 3D scanned rooms in co-design.

Improving the quality of childcare and therapeutic intervention requires enhancing the skills of workers. To address this, we have developed a tool for on-site workers in child education facilities to reflect on their activities. Specifically, we created the VisRef system, an assistive tool for video reflection using smartphones and smartwatches, and conducted practical experiments. In this system, workers wear a smartwatch and press a button on the screen when they encounter moments they want to review, recording the preceding few minutes of video. The button press alters tags of the record and allows the addition of text memos through voice recognition. These records are immediately posted on a chat system and shared with stakeholders. We conducted empirical experiments utilizing the system in Japanese daycare services for children requiring support (afterschool care services) and a nursery school. Through surveys and interviews, we examined whether the system contributes to enhancing on-site activities. The results demonstrated that the system aids in gaining deeper insights into children and helps workers reconsider their actions, which may lead to effective improvement in their performance.

    Abstract

This study aims to investigate the good way to generate insight through empathy with users. The fifteen experiment participants drew thinking processes of understanding users and defining insight statements while generating insight statements based on a given interview transcript. The thinking processes were assessed by qualitative coding, and the insight statements were evaluated. The results identified the types of thinking that should be avoided when gaining insights. This paper proposes a framework to categorise designers’ process of gaining insight.

    Abstract

This study aims at developing a new user research method that uses IoT sensors embedded at users' homes to enable users to recall their memories. The proposed method was evaluated by experiments where four participants individually created user journey maps with quantity data that was collected for seven days. The results showed that IoT sensor data increased the quantity, clarity, and accuracy of recalled memories. This study argues that IoT sensors can be an effective approach to increasing user research quality by triggering users' memories without interfering with users' ordinary lives.

The capillary force micromanipulation technique is a method to manipulate objects by generating a liquid bridge between the surface of a probe and the surface of an object. This work aims to verify whether the capillary force between a flat object and a probe with coaxially aligned hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces can be controlled as desired to pick-and-place the object. Liquid is supplied to the surface of the probe with a built-in supply channel. The change of the liquid bridge’s profile is observed from the bottom and side of the object, which is then compared with the obtained capillary force-displacement data. The effectiveness of the proposed manipulation technique will be verified by interpreting the capillary phenomenon.

A bipolar electrostatic chuck is a gripping device suitable for handling thin and flexible objects such as semiconductor wafers, glass and polymer films. Existing studies mainly focused on increasing the gripping force, such as smoothening the contact surface of the device. However, handling methods that include not only grasping, but also releasing of objects have not been developed. This study verifies the effect of the changeable stiffness at the contact interface on the grasping and releasing of an object handled using a bipolar electrostatic chuck. For object handling, efficient grasping and releasing are two fundamental functions needed of any gripping device. To ensure a smooth pick-and-place process, a significant difference between the maximum (grasping) and minimum gripping force (releasing) is desired. Thus, this study proposes a bipolar electrostatic chuck with changeable stiffness at the contact surface. The bipolar electrodes act as heaters, allowing the stiffness of the surface to be controllable by adjusting their temperature. For grasping, by decreasing the stiffness, a closer contact with an object can be achieved and the chuck’s maximum gripping force can be increased. Furthermore, during releasing, the chuck is expected to detach away from the object easily.

This study describes the development of a new probe that uses a combination of hydrophilic (acrylic) and hydrophobic (PTFE) surfaces to improve object micromanipulation based on capillary force. By using materials with different wettability for the inner and outer surfaces of the probe, the goal is to control the capillary force by only changing the volume of the droplet between the probe and the object. Therefore, the detachment of objects is more convenient as this new method eliminates the need to supply water below the object. Results show that the forces generated during the gripping and detaching process have a significant difference in magnitude. This new probe is highly applicable for stable micromanipulation without causing any damage to the object.

The purpose of this study is to develop collective beam structure ESCs with elastic hinges as rotational-degree-of-freedom structure at the tip and to verify the influence of the structure while facing planar and curved surfaces. Electrostatic chucks (ESC) are devices used in wafer manipulation but can only deal with plain targets. Collective beam structure ESCs, although having the potential for dealing with curved surfaces, lack the compliance between tip and surface, resulting in poor performance. In this study, the elastic hinge is made from phosphor bronze and other structures are made by fused deposition modelling technology. The specification of the foot structure ESC is firstly determined through calculation. Then experiments are carried out at different positions on the plain and curved surfaces with collective beam structure ESCs with and without the hinge. The results of experiments are used to verify and analyze the influence of the elastic structure on the foot structure ESC while facing the planar and curved surfaces. In the end, the effect of elastic hinge is verified, and the results are expected to contribute to the development of foot structure ESC with higher performance facing different target surfaces.

As a device for pasting film objects on curved surfaces, this paper proposed a device, composed of a shape adaptable mechanism and an elastic electrostatic chuck, which is operated by two robot arms. As the shape adaptable mechanism generating a wide range of variable curvature radii, a single-DOF scissor mechanism with an elastic element was presented. It was shown through a numerical analysis and prototyping that the proposed scissor mechanism without an elastic element can generate pure circular curves of curvature from zero to a certain value. Forward kineto-static analysis has been conducted for the proposed elastic scissor mechanism to clarify the effect of the location and characteristics of the elastic element in the mechanism on its generated shape. The results showed that the proposed mechanism can generate a wide range of multiple curvature radii.

Inspired by the phenomenon that "a glass slide on a preparatory plate cannot be pulled off vertically," this study developed a "liquid capillary manipulation" technique that enables the flexible grasping and releasing of an object by capillary force by coating the probe surface with two different hydrophilic materials. Specifically, two types of probes were created: one coated with hydrophilic material on the inside and hydrophobic material on the outside of the probe surface, and the other coated with hydrophobic material on the inside and hydrophilic material on the outside, with the aim of controlling the magnitude of liquid cappilary force by controlling the amount of droplets. This research has laid the foundation for establishing a technical system for manipulating objects using liquid cappilary force.

This research project researched on methods for people who do not have the skills that designers acquire through training (co-designers) to discover and solve problems from the perspective of users who are not themselves. This enabled us to realize a method for taking the user's point of view. Specifically, in addition to observing the thinking process from the user's point of view based on the user's information, we developed a method that facilitates taking the user's point of view using IoT devices. In addition, by using video data, we developed a method to put oneself and others in the viewpoints of the people concerned at the time when they were acting. Through this research, we have laid the foundation for constructing a method for dispatching issues from the viewpoints of the people concerned and developing ideas based on these issues.
