    <p>Facial occlusions caused by HMD (Head-Mounted Display) make capturing user's face hard. In this paper, we propose a technique to classify the mouth shapes into 6 classes using optical sensors embedded in HMD and give labels to training dataset by vowel recognition. We conducted an experiment with 5 subjects to compare recognition rates of machine learning in manual labeling and automated labeling conditions. The result shows that proposed method achieved an average of 99.9% classification accuracy in the manual labeling condition, and of 96.3% classification accuracy in the automated labeling condition.</p>

    <p>The head-mounted displays (HMD) allow people to enjoy immersive VR experience. A virtual avatar can be the representative of a user in the virtual environment. However, the expression of the virtual avatar with a HMD user is constrained. A major problem of wearing an HMD is that a large portion of one's face is occluded, making facial recognition difficult in an HMD-based virtual environment. To overcome this problem, we propose a facial expression mapping technology using retro-reflective photoelectric sensors. The sensors attached inside the HMD measures the distance between sensors and a face. The distance values of five basic facial expressions (Neutral, Happy, Angry, Surprised, and Sad) are used for training the neural network to estimate the facial expression of a user. Our system can also reproduce facial expression change in real-time through an existing avatar by using regression.</p>

    The goal of the two-sample test (a.k.a. the homogeneity test) is, given two sets of samples, to judge whether the probability distributions behind the samples are the same or not. In this paper, we propose a novel non-parametric method of two-sample test based on a least-squares density ratio estimator. Through various experiments, we show that the proposed method overall produces smaller type-II error (i.e., the rate of judging the two distributions to be the same when they are actually different) than a state-of-the-art method, with slightly larger type-I error (i.e., the rate of judging the two distributions to be different when they are actually the same).

    本年度は、(1)実物反射光から、直接・間接反射成分を分離し、それを人の視界に直接与えることのできる、質感分離スコープの性能向上と、(2)光学シースルーディスプレイに光線の加算減算を可能とする光変調眼鏡の構築と、「陰影」や「焦点ボケ」の再現といった新規な質感提示技術の構築を、当初の目標としていた。
    (研究項目1)質感分離スコープでは、複数枚の空間高周波パタン画像を対象に照射し、直接照射していない箇所のみを透過させる空間遮蔽マスクを通してそれを観察することで、間接反射成分のみを観察することができる。昨年度構築したシステムでは、透過型液晶を用いて直接反射成分を空間的にブロックする仕組みとしていたが、特に視線方向に装置が長大になってしまうという欠点があった。そこで、反射型液晶であるLCoS (liquid crystal on silicon) を用いて光路を折り畳めるようにすることで、装置のスリム化に成功した。また、照射パタンと透過パタンとの位置ずれにより縞模様のアーチファクトが視認されるという問題があったが、光学系を再設計して位置ずれを改善することに成功した。また、分離に必要となるパタン数を少なくする研究を行い、最小で2枚のチェッカパタンを投影するだけで間接反射成分を観測可能であることを明らかとした。
    (研究項目2)加算減算可能な光学シースルーディスプレイを構築し、新規な質感提示アプローチとして「陰影」を忠実に再現する技術を開発した。実験により、実物からの影を重畳する仮想物体に反映することや、仮想物体からの影を実物に重畳させることにも成功した。

    The main results of the research are divided into two sections. ■The first is the estimation of the focal distance and aberration of the eye and the visibility of the field of view using wavefront measurement. AR display technology combining a retinal projection display and a wavefront measurement sensor was developed, and experiments were conducted to evaluate depth perception in rendering according to depth of field. ■The second is image optimisation using spatial light modulation and its linkage with vision. A new AR display method, StainedView, was proposed and spatial light modulation technology was applied to construct an optical see-through optical shielding system, successfully reproducing continuous depth optically. In the final year, a compact optical shielding system using photochromic and holographic materials was constructed and presented as a conference paper in IEEE VR 2023.

    Optical see-through head-mounted displays (OST-HMD) are used for augmented reality (AR) technology that integrates virtual objects into the real world by superimposing images directly on the wearer's field of view. In this study, we have realized an OST-HMD system with optical occlusion that is free from perceptual deficiencies and overflowing of the displayed image. We have developed a miniaturized OST-HMD that produces perceptually consistent occlusion by combining a depth-range and retina-scanning OST-HMD with a transmissive liquid crystal display (LCD) using an integrated rangefinder laser projector.

    光学シースルーHMD(OST-HMD)を用いて人間の視覚機能を制御・強化する、視覚拡張 (Vison Augmentation) 技術の実現に向けて、今年度は下記の進捗があった。
    【視覚特性の推定】について、装着型HMDでの使用を視野に入れた、眼球の焦点距離すなわち注視点の奥行きを推定する手法を検討した。光点から出た光が眼球内部で反射する第4次Purkinje反射、その位置が焦点距離と相関することを用いた推定手法を提案し、装着型視線追跡カメラを用いたシステムを実装した。その結果15~45㎝の視点距離において、約3.15㎝の平均誤差での焦点距離推定が行えた。本システムの利点は、既存の大型の計測機器と異なり、個々人を継続的に計測できることにある。
    【視覚特性適応画像処理】について、人の輝度調節機能を補助する視覚拡張手法を提案した。OST-HMDと遮蔽LCDパネルを組み合わせたシステムを構築した。一人称カメラで計測した視野画像から、ユーザーの視野において露出過多・不足の領域を推定し、眼に入る光量を本システムによって低減・増幅する。実験では露出過多・不足領域が25%・50%低減し、視点における画像のダイナミックレンジを制御できることを示した。
    【超高精度空間校正手法】について、各種HMDにて実行可能な赤外眼球画像向け3D視線追跡プログラムを実装し一般公開した。本プログラムは単眼の眼球近接赤外カメラで実行可能であり、本研究課題において汎用的に利用可能なソフトウェア資源となる。

    なお本研究課題は平成29年度より17H04692若手研究(A)へと昇華・統合し、視覚拡張技術の発展へ向けて研究を継続する。
