    Four dinuclear organometallic molecular wire complexes with diethynylmetalloporphyrin linkers 1 MM' , [5,15-bis{MCp*(dppe)ethynyl}-10,20-diarylporphinato]M' (Cp* = η5-C5Me5; dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane; M/M' = Fe/Zn (1 FeZn ), Ru/Zn (1 RuZn ), Fe/Ni (1 FeNi ), Ru/Ni (1 RuNi ); aryl = 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl), are synthesized and characterized by NMR, CV, UV-vis-NIR, and ESI-TOF mass spectrometry techniques. Electrochemical investigations combined with electronic absorption spectroscopic studies reveal strong interactions among the electron-donating, redox-active MCp*(dppe) termini and the metalloporphyrin moieties. The monocationic species of the four complexes obtained by chemical oxidation have been characterized as mixed-valence Class II/III or Class III compounds according to the Robin-Day classification despite the long molecular dimension (>1.5 nm), as demonstrated by their intense intervalence charge transfer bands (IVCT) in the near IR region. DFT calculations indicate large spin densities on the metalloporphyrin moieties. Furthermore, the wirelike performance can be finely tuned by coordination of appropriate nitrogen donors to the axial sites of the metalloporphyrin.

    Molecular switch is one of the essential functional units of molecular electronics. Here, we report development of new molecular switches based on the electron-rich diruthenium complexes with the (2,5-di-R-substituted 1,4-diethynylbenzene)diyl linkers. The dinuclear molecular switches, {µ-p-C≡C-(2,5-R2-C6H2)-C≡C}{Ru(dppe)2(C≡C-C6H4-p-SMe)}2 1R (R= OMe, H, CF3), with various substituents (R) on the bridging phenylene rings showed two successive reversible 1e-oxidation waves, indicating stability of 1e-oxidized mixed-valence species. The solid-state structure of [1H]+ showed the charge-localized Robin-Day class II nature, while that of [1OMe]+ revealed the fully charge-delocalized class III nature. These characters were also evident from the spectroscopic data in solutions. Single-molecule conductance measurements by the scanning tunneling microscope break junction method revealed a significant dependence of the conductance on R, i.e. 1OMe turned out to be >100-times more conductive than 1H and 1CF3, whereas the substituent effect of the monocationic complexes was within a fold-change of 2. As a result, the ON/OFF ratios (the ratios of the conductance of the cationic species [1R]+ to that of the neutral species 1R) were critically dependent on R (as large as 191 when R = CF3) and even reversed (0.4 when R = OMe). Furthermore, the neutral and monocationic complexes 1H and [1H]+ fabricated into the nanogap devices showed in situ ON/OFF switching behavior. The present study demonstrates not only the rare examples of the mixed-valence complexes which were subjected to the break junction measurements but also the first examples of molecular switch, the ON/OFF ratio of which was controlled by tuning the organic linker parts.

    Organic photoredox catalysis has become a useful tool for the development of metal-free radical reactions. Recently, we have reported that 1,4-bis(diphenylamino)naphthalene N serves as an efficient photoredox catalyst for radical monofluoromethylation with N-tosyl-S-monofluoromethyl-S-phenylsulfoximine 2. In this paper, we report the preparation and photo- and electrochemical properties of (diarylamino)naphthalene derivatives, 1,4-bis(di(p-tert-butylphenyl)amino)naphthalene 1a, 1,5-bis(di(p-tert-butylphenyl)amino)naphthalene 1b, and 1-(di(p-tert-butylphenyl)amino)naphthalene) 1c, as supported by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent-DFT calculations. In addition, their performance of photocatalysis has been evaluated by means of methoxy-monofluoromethylation of aromatic alkenes. Laser flash photolysis shows that the fluorescence of 1a in the excited state is efficiently quenched by 2 (quenching rate constant kq = ca. 2 × 109 M-1 s-1). Transient absorption spectroscopic analyses reveal that the excited species of 1a in the presence of 2 starts decreasing in ca. 100 ps, suggesting the occurrence of fast electron-transfer processes. These results lead to the unconventional concept for the catalyst design, that is, long lifetime of the excited state is not always a requisite for efficient photoredox catalysts.

    地球環境や資源開発の観点から、グリーンシステムの開発は急務である。事実上無尽蔵な太陽光(可視光)エネルギーを有効利用できる有機合成反応系の一つとして、2000年代後半以降急速に発展してきたフォトレドックス触媒作用について、原理の解説および筆者らの研究成果を中心に最近の研究動向について紹介する。この反応系では、光増感剤触媒の励起状態の一電子移動酸化還元特性に基づいて誘起されるラジカル反応が鍵となっている。

    Abstract

    Recent developments in CH bond functionalization of amine derivatives driven by visible‐light photoredox catalysis ( PRC ) are summarized. PRC promotes the generation of organic radicals via single‐electron transfer (SET) under mild reaction conditions. Functionalizations are categorized according to the four reactive intermediates generated by PRC : N‐centered radicals (aminium cation radicals and aminyl radicals) and C‐centered active species (iminium cations and α‐aminoalkyl radicals). The radical‐generating systems by PRC can be combined with other catalytic systems such as cross‐coupling and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) to lead to more sophisticated dual and triple catalytic systems, which result in efficient functionalization of the hydrocarbyl substituents in amines. In addition to PRC , energy transfer and electron donor–acceptor complex have attracted increasing attention as alternative utilization methods of visible‐light energy. Reactions of relevant amide and imine derivatives are also included.
