In the course of this research project, we found out that writers who lived in the complicated situation in the multiethnic and multilingual cities Prague and Dublin were often highly conscious of the role of "media" that make something unconceivable--such as ghosts and spirits--conceivable. Of particular importance was the fact that at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, occultism and spiritualism served as a model for the identity formation of those authors, since the practices of occultism and spiritualism were nothing but paradigmatic attempts to make something invisible visible.

The aim of this research was to suggest that prominent writers in Prague and Dublin in the early 20th century, such as Kafka, Rilke, Yeats, Joyce and Beckett, were obsessed by the German literary idea of "Sprach-Krise" or crisis of language. In order to prove the interrelation of these writers, first, we have made it clear that many aspects of "Sprach-Krise" were evident in their poetics. Then, by comparing their poetics, we have come to understand how they tried to overcome the problem of ineffability through mystical experiences in their own ways. Finally, we have discovered that Mauthner, who had an extremely nominalistic view of language, exhibited great influence on Joyce and Beckett. Through critical analyses of the texts by Joyce and Beckett, we can conclude that it is via Vico's philosophy that Mauthner and these Irish writers are closely related. Thus, our research helps to elucidate the genealogy of "Sprach-Krise", one of the greatest literary themes in the 20th century.

ベケット文学による「自伝的エクリチュール」の系譜学:「幼児期」の形象と言語の起源

今年度は特にベケットとジョイスとの関係に焦点をあてて「言語の起源」としての「幼児期」の形象を分析した。
四・五月には昨年に引き続き文献学的調査をおこなった。特に「幼児」の形象に焦点を絞り、一九二〇年代前半から三〇年代後半にかけて書かれた両者の草稿・ノート・書簡・著作を比較検討した。その結果、両者がマウトナーの著作『言語批判に寄せて』とヴィーコの『新しい学問』に影響を受けていることが明らかにされた。
六月から九月にかけてはマウトナー・ベケット・ジョイスの関係の解明に取り組んだ。文献学的作業によって「隠喩・擬人化批判」が三者に共通する問題意識として取り出された。マウトナーを参照することによって、ジョイスの『フィネガンズウェイク』言語の中心課題が「擬人化批判」として明確化され、それを「直接的言語」と評したベケットの意図も照射されることとなった。その研究成果の一部は七月に行われた日本サミュエル・ベケット研究会例会にて発表された。
年度の後半ではヴィーコ『新しい学問』を読解し、ベケットとジョイスに共通する「隠喩・擬人化批判」がヴィーコの「幼児」や「子供」の形象に媒介されていることを解明した。ヴィーコは既知の隠喩を未知の対象に適用しようとする隠喩使用を「幼児」や「子供」の形象に代表させている。その能力は未発達であるため認識を獲得できず、むしろ認識に失敗する。これを出発点にしてジョイスとベケットのヴィーコ受容を比較分析し、二者の差異を解明した。この研究経過は第四回表象文化論研究集会において発表された。
以て「幼児」形象の分析を介して、ベケット的なエクリチュールに向かう自伝文学の系譜の起源にヴィーコ的な幼児言語(認識の失敗)とマウトナー的な言語批判(行為としての言語使用)が見出されることとなった。 -

本年度は初年度の成果を引き継ぎサミュエル・ベケットの作品における「翻訳行為」の解明に取り組んだ。その結果、ベケット作品では英・仏語間の「翻訳行為」が小説・ラジオ・テレビといったジャンル間の横断へと展開され、それが特に後期ベケット作品におけるテキスト生成の原動力となっていることを解明した。年度の前半には1960年代に書かれた散文作品(『事の次第』と『死んだ頭』など)と1950年代以降に執筆・制作されたラジオ・テレビ作品における感覚の表現を比較分析し、表象不可能性を表現する「撞着語法」の使用が、散文作品とメディア作品、あるいは言語と表象との境界として、両者間の翻訳を構造化していることを論証した。その成果は学術論文'Oxymoronic Perception and the Experience of Genre:Samuel Beckett's Ghost Trio,.but the clouds.and Beyond'としてまとめられた。本論はJournal of Beckett Studiesに掲載されることとなった。また、本年度7月には初年度の成果を世に問うため、二つの国際学会でベケットの初期小説についての発表をおこなった、イギリス比較文学会主催の国際学会では、「フォリー」という言葉の使用に、また国際アイルランド学会では「書く行為」のトポスとしてのノートブックの表象に注目し、ベケット作品を英仏語で比較分析した。その結果「翻訳行為」と「書く行為」との連関性を論証し、これらの行為の自己生成性の内実と構造を解明した。年度の後半は、これらの成果を踏まえて、1980年代以降に書かれた散文と演劇作品を分析し、この時代の作品が「バイリンガリズム」と「ジャンル横断性」とが結晶する地点を示していること、さらにこの地点は既成の文学ジャンルの境界を超えるような、いわば散文でも演劇でもない「書くこと」の自己生成(generis)性を表象するような新たな文学ジャンルを提示していることを論証した。以上の研究成果は一つの論考にまとめられた。
