    Abstract

Recent breakthroughs in understanding the human brain have revealed its impressive ability to efficiently process and interpret human thoughts, opening up the possibility of intervening in brain signals. In this paper, we aim to develop a straightforward framework that uses other modalities, such as natural language, to translate the original “dreamland”. We present DreamConnect, employing a dual-stream diffusion framework to manipulate visually stimulated brain signals. By integrating an asynchronous diffusion strategy, our framework establishes an effective interface with human “dreams”, and progressively refines their final image synthesis. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the efficacy of our method to accurately direct human brain signals in desired directions, ultimately enabling concept manipulation through direct manipulation of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals. We hope that this work will motivate the use of brain signals in human-computer interaction applications.

This article examines the attentional mechanism of in-person collaboration by means of System Dynamics-based simulations using an eye tracking experiment. Three experimental conditions were tested: in-person collaboration, remote collaboration, and single user. We hypothesized that collaboration focuses users’ attention on key information facilitating decision-making. Collaborating participants dwelt longer on key elements of the simulation than single users. Moreover, in-person collaboration and single users yielded a strategy of decision-making similar to an optimal strategy. Finally, in-person collaboration was less cognitively demanding and of higher quality. The contribution of this article is a deeper understanding of how in-person collaboration on a large display can help users focus their visual attention on the most important areas. With this novel understanding, we believe collaborative systems designers will be better equipped to design more effective attention-guiding mechanisms in remote collaboration systems. The present work has the potential to advance the study of collaborative, interactive technologies.

<p>We propose "SENSE-ROID TYPE-S", the system using two types of wearable devices, one for haptic playback and the other for haptic recording. The haptic playback wear is made with fabric braided of 60 thin artificial muscles, and it can present a wide range of haptic stimulus to the upper body. The haptic recording wear consists of 38 air-filled sensing balloons with force sensing functionality and can detect the force and position of pressure applied to the same body area. Since these two components do not include mechanical parts, we can benefit from the merits of softness, ease of installation, and reduction of weight, resolving key problems of recent wearable haptic devices.</p>

In this paper, we present a sphere-shaped interactive display system, named Qoom, as a new input and output device of the future. Unlike existing sphere-shaped displays, Qoom has perfect sphere shape, like a ball, which can be rotated, thrown or even kicked. At first, we discuss how sphere-shaped displays can be used in our life, and conduct preliminary user studies on how users interact with the sphere. Then we show how we developed a prototype of Qoom using touch and rotation detection, real-time object tracking and spherical projection mapping. We implemented primitive actions with the ball, such as touching, rotating, bouncing and throwing, as controlling actions in Qoom. We also developed applications for Qoom which utilized advantages of the spherical display.

<p>In this paper, we proposed a method to fix the point of views (POVs) of equirectangular format videos, which is captured by omnidirectional cameras embedded in a ball, to an arbitral direction even if the ball is rotating. Feature points are extracted from an entire omnidirectional image and the camera's pose is estimated by feature matching and the 5-point algorithm. The POV of the current frame is modified to the one of the initial frame by applying the product of estimated rotation matrices between all of adjacent frames up to the current. The proposed method is not limited to our ball prototypes and can be applied to any omnidirectional videos taken with different camera systems.</p>

This paper proposes a method for guiding viewers' attention without being recognized by viewers. By focusing on a characteristic of human visual system, we proposes a dynamic resolution control method. In brief, our method gradually decreases the resolution of the display to the threshold at which viewers are aware of the modulation of the display, while the resolution of the region where viewers' attention should be guided is remained as in high resolution. Two subjective experiments were conducted to show that have a possibility of viewers attention can be guided without being recognized by them.

Due to the wide spread of smart phones and PCs, people can access information everywhere in everyday life. However are very few methods in accessing contents in a bathing environment. Some people carry smart phones into a bathroom but it is unnatural to be holding a device at during bathing. This paper propose an interactive water surface display system, in which the images are projected on the surface of water with bath salt and users can interact with information on the water by using gestures. In this paper, we discuss interaction design in a bathroom, describing an implementation of our system and its applications.

<p>'SplashDisplay'is a system developed at an attempt to achieve a real-time volumetric display. This system uses air pressure generated by a x-y coordinate-based projectile launching speaker through a bed of projectile beads to stimulate a 3D'explosion' like effect in real-time. The beads acts as a projection medium for a top-mounted visible light projector; and through synchronized timing of these components, it is possible to create 3D, tangible effects at will. Also, by using IR LEDs and IR sensitive cameras, user interaction can be added to this system to allow for an interactive surface. The result of these components is a dynamic, interactive, real-time "explosion" simulation a proof of concept for the innovative construct of this proposed system. </p>

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) is widely used for the analysis of not only biological materials but also synthetic polymers. A mass spectrum obtained by MALDI-MS was found to have peaks at equal intervals on the m/z axis. The chemical structure of many types of biological compounds contain repeating units that have exactly the same elemental composition. If these repeated peaks could be identified based on the m/z interval value, such analyses could be optimized even further from the point of view of chemical structure. In this study, we describe a system for visualizing such data that has the capability of analyzing the repeated peaks on the m/z axis. The system, mzRepeat, was developed and evaluated by applying the mass spectrum of polyethylene glycol and mycolic acid, which was obtained using a JMS-S3000 Spiral-TOFMS system. Because mzRepeat can systematically show a mass spectrum that includes different numbers of repeating units, it has the potential for use in analyzing these types of molecules.

We present our new interaction technique for tabletop system and video game application using it. This technique is for recognizing pinching gestures performed with the thumb and forefinger and tapping gestures with them by a ceiling camera above the table. The positions and orientations of multiple gestures are recognized at 200Hz, and the users around the table are tracked by their arm positions. This technique is useful for large-sized tabletop system for multiple users because it does not require any additional equipments to them nor registration process befor using the system. Some pilot studies demonstrated the robustness and accuracy of the proposed technique with displaying apropriate guide on the display. We also developed a video game application called "Pac-pac". A player can shoot a bullet allong the orientation of his hand by tapping, from any side of the table. We exhibited Pac-pac several time and well-received.

Liquid Cristal Displays are getting larger, thinner, lighter, and cheaper. They have many advantages when they are used as a tabletop compared to the projector-based tabletop. As is well known, a light from the LCD is polarized and it is blocked when a polarized film is placed as its axis of polarization is perpendicular to that of the LCD. On the other hand, an additional polarized film cancels this image blocking when it is placed on the LCD. By using this optical phenomenon, we developed transparent markers which are almost invisible to human but are still visible to the camera. Moreover, we succeeded to make the markers rotation invariant by using two half waveplates. Tangible transparent Magic Lens applications which use the transparent markers are also shown.

In this research, we propose a system that allows a user to read information personally in public spaces without wearing any hardware devices. This paper presents the interface system &ldquo;palm interface&rdquo;, which displays information on the palm of the user's hand. This interface employs a snow fall metaphor to induce the user's action to catch snowflakes of information. In this paper, we describe this system and the evaluation of this system.

Many tabletop systems have been developed, but few of them discussed how to visualize and manipulate a large number of information such as files on the tabletop which is physically limited in size. In order to address this issue, we developed a rotary table. The system recognizes users' hand gestures and the users can rotate the table virtually. The table acts as a scroll wheel and users can see much information by scrolling the table. We investigated three layout method, sequential, classification, and spiral layout on the system. and conducted user studies. Moreover, we also developed a REAL rotary table by using a roller bearing and a round tabletop. Then, we conducted comparative experiments on usability and intuitiveness of two rotary tables.

Monitoring internal network is getting more and more important. In order to detect computers being attacked from external network as well as computers attacking the external network, and to act properly, it is important to know geographical information as well as temporal and logical information. This paper described the system which visualizes temporal, logical, and geographical information simultaneously in 3-D space. By laying out these information adequately in 3-D space, it becomes possible to focus on each information as well as to see their mutual relation. The user can narrow down his/her investigation by setting his/her focus on port number, inbound/outbound traffic, or any particular IP address block. The system allows command input as well as GUI interaction. The system was used in the computer center of our university, and we found the system was practical and useful to find attacks.

We have developed and evaluated a tabletop virtual Ohajiki game using a finger flicking gesture recognition system called "Ohajiki Interface". Ohajiki is a Japanese traditional marble game. A player flicks a flat marble that is called "Ohajiki" on the table with his finger. This system can recognize a user's hand position and its finger speed using a very rapid image recognition, and enables a user to flick a virtual Ohajiki projected on a table with his finger.

In this paper, we describe about user experiments about Awase-E. We implemented a web-based prototype system of Awase-E. Using this system, quantitative user experiments on usability and vulnerability were conducted. From the results of these experiments, it was clearly shown that photos are easy to memorize and recall over a long period of time, and people do not confuse their pass-images between old and new one after updating it. It was also show that, however, the Awase-E is vulnerable in typical attack methods for this kind of authentication scheme. The experiments on vulnerability showed that what are the vulnerabilities and how vulnerable they are.

Log analysis is one of the most fundamental task of intrusion detection. In recent years, since a number of computers and network security devices increases, it is required to analyze multiple logs produced by them. However, log analysis is done with text-based techniques and it is inefficient for analyzing of multiple logs. We developed a visualization system for analysis of multiple logs which visualizes the frequency of events by timeline. We analysed logs produced by a honeypot by using the system, and showed its effectiveness.

An Internet cyber threat monitoring system detects cyber threats using network sensors deployed at particular points on the Internet, statistically analyses the time of attack, source of attack, and type of attack, and then visualizes the result of this analysis. Existing systems, however, simply visualize country-by-country statistics of attacks or hourly changes of attacks. Using these systems, it is difficult to understand the source of attack, the diffusion of the attack, or the relation between the target and the source of the attack. This paper described a method for visualizing cyber threats by using 2-dimensional matrix representation of IP addresses. The advantages of this method are that: (1) the logical distance of IP addresses is represented intuitively, (2) Internet address space is visualized economically. By using this visualization framework, propagation of the computer worms are visualized.

With the rapid increase of the number of Internet users, now network use is indispensable to individuals and to organization. Although Internet provides us various services and our lives depend on it heavily, we have many problems of suspicious accesses. However, there are few opportunities to recognize what an actual exploit is, and it is difficult to recognize of the security, that is not visible. In this paper, we deployed a decoy system based on the highly interactive level Honeynet Project has defined. This system enables to be decoy on the OS level, making intruders act freely without restriction. It records not only the known activities, but unknown vulnerabilities and activities without being notified by the intruders. Currently, the concept of highly interactive level decoy system is new, the information in these system is not fully available. Prom these references, we have conducted an operation of the system, while adding some new features that were necessary. By analyzing all the logs from the system, we describe problems and propose the suitable operation methods.

Global network monitoring systems visualize the time of attack, the source of attack, and the type of attack based on the information detected by monitoring sensors on the network. However, current systems visualizes these informaton using a global map or a time-diagram. It is hard to understand the source IP of attack etc. This paper descirbes a 2D matrix visualization of IP address. The advantages of this visualization are: (1) it is possible to visualize the logical relation of IP address, (2) it is possible to visualize macroscopic information and microscopic information simultaneously. Using our visualization system, we showed the propagation of Welchia worm and Sasser worm.

In this paper we describe a concept of animated texture using A-life model called "evoloop." The texture transforms interactively according to the input by image recognition. We created an interactive art <living surfaces> using this technique. <Living Surfaces> is an interactive art realizing dynamic transformations of animated textures. On the square canvas, a complicated computer-generated color abstract image is projected, dynamically changing when people move their bodies or small black geometric shapes on it. The evolving patterns generated by "evoloop" appear according to the position of the black shapes. On the rectangle canvas, a three-dimensional creature image is projected, the texture of which reflects the pattern generated on the square canvas.

This paper proposes an image retrieval system applying distortion-oriented method in information visualization to metric space indices. We utilize Fractal Views, one of distortion-oriented methods, and apply it to dvp-tree, one of metric space indices. In information visualization, we use Fractal Views to display focusing object in detail while showing outlines with propagating fractal values among the scene graph. In our image retrieval system, we use it to select images relevant to the query image with propagating fractal values among the dvp-tree. The query image plays the role of the focus of Fractal Views. The proposed method brings a divergent similarity search that seems not to be realized only in the similar search that used distance between images. It will be effective for selecting clothes that is a kind of image retrieval which purpose is not so clear.

Computer attacks via network are increasing now. Network-based Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) is. A capable system to detect such attacks, but it is not easy to handle the system. The reason is that it is difficult to manage "False Alarms" in NIDS alert log. In this research, we have developed a visualization system of NIDS alert information, which is called "Snort View", in order to support such task. Snort View represents NIDS alerts visually. That makes it is not only to distinguish false alarms but also to reduce NIDS configuration. As a result, Snort View makes it both to operate NIDS effectively and to find intrusion activities in real time.

We propose the method that makes image-based authentication to be more secure and familiar to users. We introduce a novel image-based authentication system, called "Awase-E", based on the methods. Current image-based authentications have some problems: using artificial images, necessary for memorizing some but not a few images and presenting password images at all time. In order to improve them, we introduce "image registration" and "notification to users" into image-based authentication. It makes possible to reduce the load to human memory and build a security against some types of attacks.

In this paper, we propose a fast and robust method for tracking multiple fingertips ; we then demonstrate gesture recognition and an application based on measured fingertip trajectories for augmented desk interface systems. Our tracking method can track multiple fingertips reliably even in a complex background under a dynamically changing lighting condition with out any markers. After multiple fingertips are detected in each input infrared image frame, correspondences of those fingertips between successive image frames are determined based on a prediction technique. Our gesture recognition system is particularly advantageous for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in that users can achieve interactions based on both symbolic gestures and direct manipulation with their own hands.

This paper describes production of a media art work which used finger recognition by image processing technology. We have developed a vision-based finger-tracking system which utilizes an infrared camera and Karman filter. It is a stable and fast finger-tracking, and is able to recognize not only gestures but also the speed of gestures. Our work, called "Narrative Hand", switches movies to show with distinguishing whether an appreciation person grasps his/her hand fast or slowly. This work aims that an appreciation person feels a difference of feeling that the speed of the action in crushing objects brings, and it shows the picture which a person smashes an object like a tomato, a kiwi or tofu. When an appreciation person grasps her hand fast, our system shows a movie that an object is smashed fast. When she grasps her hand slowly, it shows one that an object is smashed slowly. Our work was exhibited for six days at ACM SIGGRAPH Emerging Technologies, and a lot of persons experienced and enjoyed it.

In this paper, we introduce a method for tracking a user's hand in 3D and recognizing the hand's gesture in real-time without the use of any invasive devices attached to the hand. Our method uses multiple cameras for determinig the position and orientation of a user's hand moving freely in a 3D space. In addition, the method identifies predetermined gestures in a fast and robust manner by using a neural network which has been properly trained beforehand. This paper also describes results of user study of our proposed method and its application for several types of aaplications, including 3D object handling for a desktop system and 3D walk-through for a large immersive display system.

This paper described a visual information retrieval system for movie databases, named ZASH. ZASH introduced some concepts of information retrieval techniques which people often use in our real world particularly when people are not sure what they want. For example, ZASH used multi-dimensional scaling(MDS)to lay out movies so that similar movies are displayed physically near each other. Commentators are also laid out by using MDS so that users can easily find reliable commentators. Moreover, by calculating degree of importance of each data, ZASH allows users to recognize the indirect relations of data. Most importantly, searching capabilities using keywords, directors' names, or actors' names, are integrated into the system in order to provide flexible retrieval.

When the system recognizes 2-D barcode attatched on the page which has digital information, the system automatically retrieves the digital information and projects them onto the desk. Users can manipulate the digital information using their own hand or finger. To recognize user' hand/finger, we developed a novel method for hand/finger detection using an infrared camera, template matching technique, and a pan-tilt camera. Using our method, users'hand/finger is recognized in real time. We also showed an application of EnhancedDesk to computer supported learning environment, and the system was named Interactive Textbook.

It is necessary for system administrator to investigate some log information. The reason is that log-files contain enormous information generated from an operating system and various programs and these information are useful to solve a variety of troubles on computer. Moreover, an intrusion to the computer becomes serious problem more and more. A system administrator, therefore, has to watch a log information periodically in order to find out the intrusion marks. In this research, we developed log information browsing systemwhich is called"MieLog", in order to support such task. MieLog extracts some characteristics from log information. An example of these characteristics is the number of log outputting in fixed time or the length of log text. MieLog, moreover represents their characteristics visually with textual information. As a result, MieLog makes it easier for systemadministrator to investigate log information.

An intrusion to the computer becomes a serious threat. Some methods to cope with them are already proposed. Such methods, however, do not come to use widely, because these methods have some problems respectively. We extract the problem from existing intrusion management. As a result of it, we led that periodical log inspection makes a computer more secure against the intrusion. We suggest a log information visualization system that helps inspecting log information. We propose two visualization methods in this research. One is a summary visualization. The other is a time based visualization. Both methods enable an inspector to investigate log information more easily and effectively. This advantage makes it possible for a novice user to investigate log information. We also propose a novel intrusion management that monitors log information by multiple users using visualization systems. This method can improve not only the problem in existing intrusion detection systems but also the problem originated in human factor.

Logging information is necessary for intrusion detection. Intrusion detection systems are investigating them in order to judge whether intrusion had occurred or not. It, therefore, must protect logging information, because there is much possibility that intruder compromise them. Though some systems had been proposed for protecting logging information until now. These systems detect their modification and make hard to modify them. If logging information had been modified or removed, original logging information are lost. This is undesirable for computer security. It is necessary to investigate them why intrusion had occurred. In this research, we propose logging information protection system that makes it possible to protec them even if they had removed. When logging information was compromised by someone, our system make it possible to protect them which way is automatically restoring them from backups. Moreover, it is possible to recognize an occurrence of compromising them nearly in real-time. We implement our proposed method as a C++ Class. It is possible to integrate logging information protecting system into various applications.

In interactive 3-D graphics systems, such as virtual reality systems, information visualization systems, etc., it is important to manipulate a large number of polygons and to maintain high interactivity. This paper proposed a technique to simplify the 3-D scene automatically by using distortion-oriented algorithm. While no user event occurs, the system renders all objects in the scene graph since there is enough time to do so. When a user event is detected, the system renders a current focused object and its neighborhood (in the scene graph). To decide the neighborhood, Fractal Views, which is variation of distortion-oriented algorithms, is used. The technique was applied to virtual-walkthrough, 3-D CAD data, and molecular visualization.

  • Integrating Version Control and Module Management Using Three - dimensional Visualization Reviewed

Version control and module management are very important in software development and maintenance. In UNIX, SCCS or RCS is generally used as a version control tool. However, they (1) lack a capability of showing version changes, (2) require complicated commands to be typed, and (3) lack a capability of managing multiple files and modules. In this article, we propose a solution by using 3D visualization. In our system, each version information stored in a SCCS history file is displayed as a 2D tree by taking the X-axis as time. Other 2D trees are laid out in the 3D space so that the files in the same module can be placed physically near each other in the YZ-plane. Moreover, files which should be compiled together are connected with a link called relational link. By using GUJ, a user can check in/out each version easily and interactively. More importantly, just by choosing a relational link, a specific version of the entire software system is build automatically.

A hierarchical structure is one of the most important data structures in information systems. Thus, a visualization system of the hierachical structure has potential usefulness. It is, however, meaningless to visualize such a huge tree that has hundreds or thousands of nodes by using a current tree visualization framework. With an exponential explosion in size of a tree, when a user focuses on a node. he/she cannot see even its parent, children, nor siblings. Also, the increase of the visual elements is detrimental to human's cognitive load as well as to the system's response time. This paper describes fractal approaches to the problems which associate with visualizing huge hierarchies in interactive systems. The geometrical characteristic of a fractal, self-similarity, allows users to visually interact with a huge tree in the same manner at every level of the tree. The fractal dimension, a measure of complexity, makes it possible to control the total amount of displayed nodes. A prototype visualization system for UNIX directories is also shown.

  • An Application of a Fractal - based Method for Information Display Control to a Lisp Printer Reviewed

Computer users must interact with large amounts of information through video displays which are physically limited in size. To minimize this problem, the authors had proposed a fractal-based method for information display control, which can keep the total amount of displayed information nearly constant without relation to the structure of information. This paper described an application of this method to the Lisp printer. In general, Lisp printers control the display of S^expressions by focusing on the depth of the S-expression and the number of siblings at each depth. However, with this method : (1) the total amount changes considerably corresponding to the target S-expression ; (2) it also changes considerabley when each threshold is incremented or decremented ; (3) it is hard to hundle two thresholds. We implemented a Lisp printer which used our method, and showd its ability through the comparative experiment to the normal printer. We, moreover, extended this to a focus-oriented printer which used another feature of our method, the integration of details and contexts.

This paper described a new interaction technique that recognizes a finger flicking gesture to control power adjustment for a sports game, such as golf swing or batting on a baseball. Our system measures speed of the finger motion and direction of the gesture using a high-speed camera and a high frame rate image processing techniques. By using the system, users can adjust a power and an angle intuitively. We developed a 3D golf game using this interaction technique to provide an intuitive golf swing input, and a tabletop virtual ohajiki game which enables a user to flick a virtual marble projected on a table with his finger.

We developed an advertising system that enables users to interact with advertisements on a large display wall without any physical contact. The system recognizes positions of bodies or hands of users in front of the display by stereo cameras. The system recognizes a distance between a user and the display as the user's interests in the advertisement. We developed three prototype applications of the system. The first prototype displays and scrolls advertisements according to a user's position. The second prototype recognizes a distance to a user and shows detailed information when the user approaches to one of the advertisements. The third prototype changes two display modes according to the distance. One of the modes shows advertisements as may as possible to attract interests of passers-by. The other allows a user to interact with the advertisement on the display by recognizing the user's hand.

One of the important techniques for Perceptual User Interface (PUI) is recognition of users' hand gestures. However, it has a serious difficulty in that it recognizes unintentional activities as intentional gestures, because it depends on tracking of only users' hands. In this paper, for reliable recognition of hand gestures, we propose a new method for detecting intentional motions of hands by making use of users' gaze points in two-handed interaction. In addition, we report the experimental results of our proposed method.

Previous state-of-the-art research topics in VR/AR are focusing mainly on expansion or distortion of 3D virtual space. There are rarely research topic about the control of the time scale in virtual information space. Not only 3D space but also time scale are modified subjectively natural in this research project and the influence of this Reality Distorted Spatio-Temporal Field to human activity or perception in physical world is accessed. Sports training and a language training are picked up as application examples and a concrete Reality Distorted Spatio-Temporal Field is designed and constructed. And the result of system evaluation shows the superiority that the sports or language training in our space-time distorted space brings effectively a feedback to trainees in physical world.

Unlike projection mapping on a static object, projection on a fast moving object causes a delay in projection. Previous research has proposed a method to predict the position of an object using a Kalman filter, but this method does not deal with projections onto objects with three-dimensional shapes. In this study, we attempted to solve the above delay by learning the object's motion using deep learning, simultaneously predicting the object's position and 3D posture in about 0.5 seconds, and projecting the object. As a result of the experiment, we were able to improve the projection accuracy compared to the case of no prediction and Kalman filter prediction only.

We developed a ball camera with an omnidirectional camera and its image processing algorithm to fix the point of view (POV) for spectating of ball sports. The problem of an omnidirectional video taken with this ball camera is that the POV is unstable since the camera pose changes as the ball rotations. We propose a method to generate a POV-fixed omnidirectional video by estimating the change of camera pose by feature matching and applying the pose modification process to each frame. We applied this method to some sports such as bowling, water polo, and soft ball, and showed our method is effective in any situation. We also applied this method to capsule endoscopy which has similar design as the camera ball.

To use the image and data effectively acquired by the image sensor developed for the team play sports image analysis, we developed the new image interface using past-images with spherical vision system. The past images were taken using the omnidirectional camera installed in the movable body. We can get virtual viewpoint from the third party by drawing the model of the movable body on the past image. It was confirmed that we can analyze the omnidirectional image based on the player's action even if the complex action of many objects like team play sports.
As research for classification of team play sports images, we researched a novel object extraction from 2D vector images. We have proposed a novel object extraction method using merits of vector images. The proposed method analyzes relations between individual primitives of vector images and the regions defined by these primitives. According to the analysis, a set of primitives defining object region is detected. We have compared accuracy and speed performance between the proposed method and ACM(Active Contour Model), which is a traditional raster-based object extraction method. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method has higher accuracy and speed performance than ACM.
The element technology of comparing standard data base with player' s action was researched by using the markers and the acceleration sensors to support the practice of specific actions in sports. We, tried to develop more adequate grading system by adding the acceleration sensor to the grading system of action only of markers in this research. The effect of the introduction of the acceleration sensors was confirmed by the evaluation experiment.

We developed augmented desk system, named Enhanced Desk, which smoothly integrates paper and digital information on a desk. The system provides users an intelligent environment that automatically retrieves and displays digital information corresponding to the real objects (e.g. books) on the desk by using computer vision. The system also provides users direct manipulation of digital information by using their own hands and fingers for more natural and more intuitive interaction.
We developed a novel method for real-time finger tracking on Enhanced Desk by introducing a infrared camera, pattern matching with normalized correlation, a pan-tilt camera. We extended the method from 2-D to 3-D by using multiple cameras. In order to recognize objects on Enhanced Desk, we first used 2-D barcode. However, it is sometimes difficult to attach the barcode to some objects. In order to, solve this problem, we developed a new method for interactive object registration and registration by using color information of the objects. Then we discussed the use of head pose and position for human-interaction by using real-time face tracking system.
Finally, we developed some applications on Enhanced Desk. The first application is Interactive Textbook, which is aimed at providing an effective learning environment. The second application is the Interactive Venn Diagram, which is aimed at supporting effective information retrieval. The third application is Snap Link, which enable interactive object registration and recognition. The forth application is a two-handed drawing tool on Enhanced Desk
