    The liquid/liquid interfaces of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) play a pivotal role in chemical reactions owing to their characteristic microscopic structure, yet the structure of hydrophobic liquid/RTIL interfaces remains unclear. We studied the structure at the liquid/liquid interfaces of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([Cnmim][TFSA]; n = 4 and 8) RTILs using infrared–visible sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. A comparison of the SFG spectra of the CCl4/RTIL and air/RTIL interfaces revealed that the solvation of the alkyl chains of the [Cnmim]+ cations by CCl4 reduces the number of gauche defects in the alkyl chain and the interface number density of the cation at the CCl4 interface. The orientational change of the [TFSA]− anion and concomitant increase in the area it occupies at the CCl4 interface was observed to be greater than that at the air interface. This is accompanied by the expansion of the space among the alkyl chains of the cations to be solvated by CCl4. The structural change of the CCl4 interface from the air interface can be attributed to the solvophilic effect of CCl4 on the alkyl chains of the cations at the CCl4/[Cnmim][TFSA] interface. This is in contrast with the solvophobic effect of CCl4 on the Langmuir film at the CCl4/water interface. This phenomenon is caused by the loosely packed alkyl chains of the cations at the RTIL surface and the flexible anion–cation arrangement owing to the weak basicity and acidity of the ions in the RTILs.

    Abstract

    Halogenation of non‐fused ring electron acceptors (NFREAs) plays an important role in regulating their optoelectronic properties. However, the underlying mechanisms and their impact on the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) have remained unclear. Herein, a series of halogenated NFREAs incorporating F, Cl, and Br, are prepared to study their effect on crystallization kinetics, phase separation, molecular packing, and charge transport. Among various halogenation strategies, chlorination minimizes the Coulomb attractive energy between donor and acceptor, thereby facilitating exciton dissociation. In situ UV–vis absorption tests reveal that chlorinated acceptors exhibit a longer crystallization time, effectively suppressing excessive molecular aggregation and enhancing overall crystallinity. Additionally, chlorinated acceptors exhibit a longer exciton diffusion length, which promotes exciton dissociation while mitigating charge recombination in the devices. Consequently, two chlorinated NFREAs, TCN‐Cl, and PCN‐Cl, yield an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.85% and 15.30%, respectively, when blended with PM6 and J52 donors. These values represent the highest reported PCEs to date for NFREAs with A‐π‐A’‐π‐A and A‐π‐D‐π‐A structures. The study elucidates the crucial role of chlorination in extending exciton diffusion length and crystallization time. These effects significantly benefit phase separation within the active layers, enhance charge separation, and suppress recombination for achieving high‐efficiency OSCs.

    Electrochemical interfaces play a key role in the electrochemical reaction in the electrochemical systems, such as batteries. Thus, elucidating potential response of electrochemical interface structure is of fundamental issue to understand the origin of electrochemical property of systems. In this study, we demonstrate in situ observation of the electrochemical interfaces by IR-visible sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (IV-SFG), which has been recognized as a powerful tool to investigate buried interfaces, to clarify the origin of hysteretic ion adsorption/desorption at electrochemical interfaces. The activation energy of ion desorption, which causes the hysteretic potential response of electrochemical interface, was examined by IV-SFG with electric double layer (EDL) model analysis and the activation energy of anion desorption is found to be a root cause of hysteretic ion adsorption/desorption at the electrochemical interfaces.

    Ion adsorption/desorption at electrolyte/electrode interfaces is of fundamental importance in electrochemistry due to its critical role in the electrochemical reactions. Therefore, in situ observation of the microscopic structure and environment at the electrolyte/electrode interfaces is crucial for further understanding of the functionality of electrochemical systems.
    In this study, we developed the in situ observation techniques of electrolyte/electrode interface by using sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG). We employed the electrochemical SFG method for various electrolyte/electrode systems including Li ion battery-related systems and revealed the mechanisms of (i) Li salt addition effect on the electrochemical stability enhancement of ionic liquid/electrode systems and (ii) ion adsorption/desorption hysteresis at the electrolyte/electrode interfaces.

    電解液/電極界面は電気化学反応場を構築する重要なナノ領域であり、近年既存モデルで説明できないイオン吸着・脱離挙動の電位応答ヒステリシスが注目を集めている。本研究はイオン液体を電解液に用いて電気化学測定・赤外-可視和周波振動分光(IV-SFG)・光電子分光を相補的に活用し、ヒステリシス挙動とイオン-電極間相互作用の相関を解明することでヒステリシスを説明する新規概念モデル構築を目指す。27年度は下記に示す通り主に(1)膜厚制御可能なイオン液体薄膜成膜技術の確立、(2)光電子分光を用いたイオン液体/電極界面の電子構造の計測、(3)IV-SFGを用いたイオン液体/電極界面の吸着構造の計測を図った。
    (1)既存の蒸着装置にてイオン液体成膜を試みたが、真空槽内を汚染する問題が生じた。そこで、新規イオン液体蒸着槽の設計・開発を行い、現在組み立てを行っている。
    (2)イオン液体塗布基板の光電子分光計測を試み、電子構造評価が可能であることを確認した。今後は上記蒸着槽を用いて電極界面の電子準位接続及び界面双極子の評価を行う。
    (3)様々なイオン液体の電極界面における吸着構造を計測し、そのヒステリシス挙動はイオン種依存性を有することが分かった。また、希釈電解液系ではヒステリシス挙動の強い電解質濃度依存性を見出した。これは拡散層のイオン配列構造がイオン吸着構造に大きな影響を与えることを示唆する。今後はヒステリシス挙動のイオン種・電解質濃度依存性を精査し、既存モデルとの差異を検討することでヒステリシスを説明可能な新規モデル構築を試みる。
    上記において、(3)は様々な電気化学デバイスの機能性が図らずもヒステリシス挙動に影響されている可能性を示す重要な成果と考えられる。今後は電気化学測定・光電子分光からイオン-電極間相互作用の情報抽出を行い、より普遍的で自己無撞着なモデル構築を目指す。
