The subjective feeling of being the author of one's actions and the subsequent consequences is referred to as a sense of agency. Such a feeling is crucial for usability in human-computer interactions, where eye movement has been adopted, yet this area has been scarcely investigated. We examined how the temporal action-feedback discrepancy affects the sense of agency concerning eye movement. Participants conducted a visual search for an array of nine Chinese characters within a temporally-delayed gaze-contingent display, blurring the peripheral view. The relative delay between each eye movement and the subsequent window movement varied from 0 to 4,000 ms. In the control condition, the window played a recorded gaze behavior. The mean authorship rating and the proportion of "self" responses in the categorical authorship report ("self," "delayed self," and "other") gradually decreased as the temporal discrepancy increased, with "other" being rarely reported, except in the control condition. These results generally mirror those of prior studies on hand actions, suggesting that sense of agency extends beyond the effector body parts to other modalities, and two different types of sense of agency that have different temporal characteristics are simultaneously operating. The mode of fixation duration shifted as the delay increased under 200-ms delays and was divided into two modes at 200-500 ms delays. The frequency of 0-1.5° saccades exhibited an increasing trend as the delay increased. These results demonstrate the influence of perceived action-effect discrepancy on action refinement and task strategy.

INTRODUCTION: Inconsistent jittery temporal delays between action and subsequent feedback, prevalent in network-based human-computer interaction (HCI), have been insufficiently explored, particularly regarding their impact on the sense of agency (SoA). This study investigates the SoA in the context of eye-gaze HCI under jittery delay conditions. METHODS: Participants performed a visual search for Chinese characters using a biresolutional gaze-contingent display, which displayed a high-resolution image in the central vision and a low-resolution in the periphery. We manipulated the delay between eye movements and display updates using a truncated normal distribution (μ to μ + 2 σ) with μ ranging from 0 to 400 ms and σ fixed at 50 ms. Playback of recorded gaze data provided a non-controllable condition. RESULTS: The study revealed that both reported authorship and controllability scores, as well as the fixation count per second, decreased as μ increased, aligning with trends observed under constant delay conditions. The subjective authorship weakened significantly at a μ of 94 ms. Notably, the comparison between jittery and constant delays indicated the minimum value (μ) of the distribution as a critical parameter influencing both authorship perception and visual search time efficiency. DISCUSSION: This finding underscores the importance of the shortest delay in modulating SoA. Further examining the relative distribution for fixation duration and saccade amplitude suggests an adaptation in action planning and attention distribution in response to delay. By providing a systematic examination of the statistical attributes of jittery delays that most significantly affect SoA, this research offers valuable implications for the design of efficient, delay-tolerant eye-gaze HCI, expanding our understanding of SoA in technologically mediated interactions. Moreover, our findings highlight the significance of considering both constant and variable delay impacts in HCI usability design, marking a novel contribution to the field.

<p>This paper discuss about suitable damage size that should be detected by ultrasonic testing (UT) for nuclear power plant piping when consider about propagation of IGSCC. The power plant piping loop is inspected using UT as an in-service inspection (ISI). The reliability of UT result is affected by examination personnel. In this paper, the reliability of UT is defined simplified POD (Probability of detection) curve. The curve is defined by only three parameters, minimum detectable crack depth (a0), most detectable crack depth (a1) and maximum POD(m). The reliability of plant piping with different diameters are estimated by using this POD curve. The Failure probabilities were calculated with Monte Carlo approach. In case of low carbon stainless steel with IGSCC, a1 and m are less than 6 mm and 0.96 respectively, the piping loop failure probability is under 1x10-7. In another case of sensitized stainless steel with IGSCC, a1 and m are less than 6 mm and 0.96, the piping loop failure probability is under 1x10-3. It was found that the parameters of a1 and m do not affect plant reliability when a1 is between 3 to 6mm, and m is between 1.00 to 0.96. This result can be used to decide the requirement for examination personnel reliability.</p>

Although the hang glider is well known, few people have experienced it since one has to drive to suburban flight areas to try it. Nowadays, conventional flight exhibitions that include towing enable beginners to drop in at flight experience events in urban open spaces, including central Tokyo. To boost this urban exhibition, we designed an indoor hang glider virtual reality system that is easy, stable, and offers some of the most exciting flight experiences that hang gliders can ever have, regardless of the weather conditions. This system enabled to propagate the fascination with the hang glider for many people at the event even in urban Tokyo.

Haptic perception of a 2D image is thought to make heavy demands on working memory. During active exploration, humans need to store the latest local sensory information and integrate it with kinesthetic information from hand and finger locations in order to generate a coherent perception. This tactile integration has not been studied as extensively as visual shape integration. In the current study, we compared working-memory capacity for tactile exploration to that of visual exploration as measured in change-detection tasks. We found smaller memory capacity during tactile exploration (approximately 1 item) compared with visual exploration (2-10 items). These differences generalized to position memory and could not be attributed to insufficient stimulus-exposure durations, acuity differences between modalities, or uncertainty over the position of items. This low capacity for tactile memory suggests that the haptic system is almost amnesic when outside the fingertips and that there is little or no cross-position integration.

We present a light-weighted, soft wearable actuator for the user's human brain function recording in the functional Magnetic Resonance imaging scanner, and show its safety in the 3T magnetic field. This device can allow the participant's passive wrist flexion or extension by pressurizing palmar or dorsal actuators. The main components of the device are soft silicon elastomer-based McKibben artificial muscles using 2.0 mm diameter and a leather glove. As all components of the device are non-magnetic material, it was shown that the device did not cause artifacts to the fMRI images. The actuator showed stable latency to activate the actuators and robust trajectory of the participant's hand movement across the trials within participants. These results indicate that the developed device suffices the requirement for psychophysics and MRI experiment of the user's sensations such as the sense of agency, and their brain plasticity by the human body and the actuator interaction.

How the sensation “a live human is looking at me” changes our eye behavior including eye movement? How about when they make eye contact via live video chat system? To answer these, we built a system wherein a pair of participants looked at each other’s faces via video chat like display, and we tracked their eye movements simultaneously. Three conditions were tested: real-time face-to face observation (RT), recorded face observations (RF), and static face picture observations (SF) for 30 sec. Participants had to watch the video and judge whether they observed “Live” or “Not Live” video. When data were classified based on the response types or “Live”/“Not Live,” less fixations around eyes were observed for “Live” response trials, less fixations around eyes were observed for another participant in the video. This showed that decision process to judge whether somebody is looking at me in real-time or depended on other person’s behavior related to avoiding eye contacts.

The friction characteristics of an index finger slid on a molecular-layer-coated surface was investigated using the laboratory-made tribometer that can measure friction force, normal load, and positional information simultaneously. Both a normal load and a speed dependencies of friction coefficient was represented as one approximated curve surfaces. Besides, the shear strength decreased with increasing film thickness on the Si surface, indicating that the surface state is a dominant factor in determining the friction characteristics of the finger.
As for a correlation between a response time of touch panel display and the mechanical data of the finger slid on the display, the delay of the response time probably induced the heavy feeling of the subjects, and this could be brought about a change to the mechanical data of the finger manipulation such as sliding speed.
