Profile

Takeshi Hatanaka (Senior Member, IEEE) received the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics and physics from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, in 2007. He then held faculty positions with the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan and Osaka University, Suita, Japan. Since October 2024, he has been a Professor with the Institute of Science Tokyo. He is coauthor of Passivity-Based Control and Estimation in Networked Robotics (Springer, 2015) and co-editor of Economically-enabled Energy Management (Springer Nature, 2020). His research interests include cyber-physical-human systems and networked robotics. He was the recipient of the Kimura Award (2017), Pioneer Award (2014), Pioneer Technology Award (2023), Outstanding Book Award (2016), Control Division Conference Award (2018), Takeda Prize (2020), and Outstanding Paper Awards (2009, 2015, 2020, 2021, 2023) all from The Society of Instrumental and Control Engineers (SICE), and IFAC 2023 Application Paper Prize Finalist. He is serving/served as an SE for IEEE TCST, an editorial board member of Annual Reviews in Control, and an AE for IEEE TCST, IFAC Journal of Mechatronics, Advanced Robotics and SICE Journal of Control, Measurement, and System Integration, and an IEEE CSS Conference Editorial Board member.

    Abstract

    In this research, Net‐Zero Energy Houses (ZEHs) is investigated that harness regionally produced electricity from photovoltaic (PV) panels and fuel cells, integrating them into a local power system in pursuit of achieving carbon neutrality. This article examines the impact of electricity sharing among users who are working towards attaining ZEH status through the integration of PV panels and battery storage devices. Two potential scenarios are proposed: the first assumes that all users individually invest in storage devices, hence minimizing their costs on a local level without energy sharing; the second envisions cost minimization through the collective use of a shared storage device, managed by a central manager. These two scenarios are formulated as a stochastic convex optimization and a cooperative game, respectively. To tackle the stochastic challenges posed by multiple random variables, the Monte Carlo sample average approximation (SAA) is applied to obtain solvable deterministic convex problems. Last, to demonstrate the practical applicability of these models, the proposed scenarios are implemented in the Jono neighborhood in Kitakyushu, Japan.

    In this paper, we address a persistent object search and surveillance mission for drone networks equipped with onboard cameras, and present a safe control strategy based on control barrier functions The mission for the object search and surveillance in this paper is defined with two subtasks, persistent search and object surveillance, which should be flexibly switched depending on the situation. Besides, to ensure actual persistency of the mission, we incorporate two additional specifications, safety (collision avoidance) and energy persistency (battery charging), into the mission. To rigorously describe the subtask of persistent search, we present a novel notion of γ-level persistent search and the performance certificate function as a candidate of a time-varying Control Barrier Function. We then design a constraint-based controller by combining the performance certificate function with other CBFs that individually reflect other specifications. In order to manage conflicts among the specifications, the present controller prioritizes individual specifications in the order of safety, energy persistency, and persistent search/object surveillance. The present controller is finally demonstrated through simulation and experiments on a testbed.

    This paper presents a continuous-time version of an optimization algorithm called Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM), and analyzes convergence of the optimization dynamics based on passivity. First, a convex optimization problem is formulated as an equivalent ADMM form. We then present a novel continuous-time ADMM and prove convergence to a subset of optimal solutions of the convex optimization problem based on the theory of interconnected passive systems, where the cost function is assumed to be not strictly convex but just convex. Finally, the effectiveness of the present algorithm is demonstrated in a numerical simulation.

    This paper investigates potential game theoretic cooperative control. In particular, it focuses on payoff-based learning for potential games with a potential function equal to the formulated social welfare function. One of the authors' previous works on the topic provided a conjecture that taking irrational decisions in the payoff-based learning process is essential in achieving the potential function maximization. To reinforce the conjecture, the authors refine an algorithm, called simple experimentation, and present a novel payoff-based learning algorithm with irrational decisions. Then, the maximization is rigorously proved. The effectiveness of the present algorithm is finally demonstrated through simulation.

    In this paper, we investigate estimation performance of a vision-based observer, presented in one of the authors' previous work, when a target object takes stochastic motion in three dimensional space. The configuration space of the full 3-D rigid object motion is known to be given by the product space SE(3)=R3 ×SO(3). Consequently, the stochastic motion must be described by a stochastic differential equation (SDE) on SE(3). We thus first formulate the SDE on SE(3) describing the evolution of the estimation error between the actual motion and its estimate produced by the visual observer. Then, we analyze the estimation accuracy in the framework of the noise-to-state stability (NSS). However, since NSS guarantees qualitative properties, we also take the notion of ultimately exponential boundedness in mean sense to clarify the quantitative estimation accuracy. Finally, we demonstrate validity of the latter result through simulation.

    This paper investigates passivity-based visual feedback pose regulation whose goal is to control a vision camera pose so that it reaches a desirable configuration relative to a moving target object. For this purpose, we present a novel visual feedback estimation/control structure including a vision-based observer called visual motion observer under the assumption that a pattern of the target motion is available for control. We first focus on the evolution of the orientation part and the resulting estimation/control error system is proved to be passive from the observer/control input to the estimation/control error output. Accordingly, we also prove that the control objective is achieved by just closing the loop based on passivity. Then, we prove convergence of the remaining position part of the error system. We moreover extend the present velocity input to force/torque input taking account of camera robot dynamics. Finally, the effectiveness of the present estimation/control structure is demonstrated through simulation.

    This paper investigates cooperative energy network formation for distributed autonomous microgrids based<br />
    on receding horizon control and game theoretic cooperative control. In particular, we focus on photovoltaics and aim at<br />
    minimizing its temporal and spatial variabilities while reducing transmission losses over the whole network by forming<br />
    an appropriate network of power transmissions. We first formulate a novel optimal network formation problem in the<br />
    form of resource allocation games so that the welfare function reflects the above objectives. Then, the problem is reduced<br />
    to a potential game through an existing utility design technique. We next present a variation of a learning algorithm<br />
    presented in one of our previous works and newly provide a proof of convergence in probability to potential function<br />
    maximizers. Moreover, we consider real time implementation of the presented framework based on receding horizon<br />
    control, where it is shown that the information processing of the learning algorithm is almost distributed with the helps<br />
    of a solar radiation forecasting/estimation system. Finally, we illustrate the effectiveness of the present approach through<br />
    simulation using real data of a solar radiation estimation system.

    A robotic sensor network is advantageous in performing a coverage task compared to the<br />
    static sensor network due to its ability to self-deploy and self-reconfigure. However, since<br />
    the sensor has a limited sensing range, when mobile sensors are initially deployed, sensors<br />
    located far away from the region of interest may not be able to self-deploy themselves, i.e.<br />
    participate in the coverage task. This results in a degradation of coverage performance by<br />
    the robotic network. Furthermore, since in reality the mobile sensors have only a limited<br />
    energy storage, the movement of the sensors have to be as efficient as possible. This article<br />
    proposes a novel distributed algorithm in order to improve the coverage performance by<br />
    the robotic visual sensor network by guaranteeing the participation of all sensors in the coverage<br />
    task and considering the energy consumption of the sensors in the motion planning.<br />
    The algorithm is a combination of the standard gradient-based coverage algorithm and a<br />
    leader-following algorithm and is designed to maximize the joint detection probabilities of<br />
    the events in the region of interest. In addition, the standard coverage control law is further<br />
    modified in order to take into account the energy consumption of the sensors. The results<br />
    are validated through numerical simulations.

    In this paper, we focus on smoothing effects for photovoltaic generation and investigate its maximization problem based on game theory. We first confirm the smoothing effects through data analysis of global solar radiation profiles. We next formulate an optimal energy source selection problem and then reduce the problem to so-called resource allocation games. After pointing out that the game is reduced to so-called potential games, we present a real-time implementation method of a payoff-based learning algorithm leading players to the optimal action without prior knowledge on utility functions. Finally, we demonstrate its effectiveness through simulation.

    In this paper, we investigate a vision-based 3D rigid-body motion estimation problem. In one of<br />
    our previous works, the authors addressed the problem using no prior information on the target motion. On<br />
    the other hand, this paper presents another approach assuming some target motion patterns. We first consider<br />
    a constant velocity model, which is a typical choice of motion patterns, and present a novel motion observer<br />
    integrating the motion model. We then prove based on passivity that the presented observer leads both of the<br />
    estimates of the target object pose and body velocity to their actual values. Moreover, we extend the result to a<br />
    more general motion pattern. Finally, the effectiveness of the presented estimation mechanism is demonstrated<br />
    through experiments.

    This paper investigates visual feedback pose (position and attitude) synchronization in leader-following type visibility structures on the Special Euclidean group SE(3). We first define visual robotic networks for multiple camera models. We then propose a visual feedback pose synchronization law combining a vision-based observer with the pose synchronization law presented in our previous works. We then prove that for a static leader, the present control law on the network achieves visual feedback pose synchronization. Moreover, for a moving leader, we evaluate the tracking performance of the network by employing the notion of L2-gain performance. Finally, the validity of the present control law and analysis is demonstrated through experiments.

    In this paper, we investigate the game theoretic coverage control whose objective is to lead agents to optimal configurations over a mission space. In particular, the objective of this paper is to achieve the control objective (i) in the absense of the perfect prior knowledge on importance of each point and (ii) in the presence of the action constraints. For this purpose, we first formulate coverage problems with two different global objective functions as so-called potential games. Then, we present a payoff-based learning algorithm determining actions based only on the past actual outcomes. The feature of the present algorithm is to allow an agent to take an irrational action. We also clarify a relation between a design parameter of the algorithm and theprobability which agents take the optimal actions and prove that the probability can be arbitrarily increased. Then, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the present algorithm through experiments on a testbed.

    This paper addresses collision avoidability analysis of a platoon of vehicles under Vehicle-to-Vehicle-to-Infrastructure(V2V2I) communication. We first present a system consisting of vehicular strings and infrastructure in connection. Each vehicle drives automatically connecting others under Vehicle-to-Vehicle(V2V) communication, infrastructure inputs desired inter-vehicular distance to platoon to control safety under Vehicle-to-Infrastructure(V2I) communication. Then we analyze collision avoidability of the vehicle platoon, where we show relationship between communication structure and controllability of safety from infrastructure.

    This paper presents a novel cooperative estimation algorithm for visual sensor networks. We consider the situation where multiple smart vision cameras with computation and communication capability see different target objects. The objective of the present algorithm is to meet two requirements: (i) gaining estimates close to an average pose for static objects and (ii) tracking of estimates to moving objects' poses. In order to meet the requirements simultaneously, we present a cooperative estimation algorithm based on passivity of the kinematic model of rigid body motion. Though the present algorithm embodies both properties from its structure, we restrict our theoretical interests to averaging and provide an upper bound of the ultimate error between the actual average and the estimates given by the present algorithm.

    In this paper we consider potential game theoretic attitude coordination. We especially focus on two ordered configurations: "synchronization" and "balanced circular formation". We first show that both problems constitute potential games by employing some global and individual objective functions, and a learning algorithm called Restrictive Spatial Adaptive Play (RSAP) leads robots to the ordered configurations with high probability even in the presence of mobility constraints. We moreover show that the problem also constitutes a group-based potential game and convergence of distribution of actions to stationary one can be accelerated. Finally, the effectiveness of the schemes is demonstrated by simulation.

    In this paper we investigate visual feedback attitude synchronization in leader-follower type visibility structures on the Special Euclidean group SE(3). We first define visual robotic networks consisting of the dynamics describing rigid body motion, visibility structures among bodies and visual measurements. We then propose a visual feedback attitude synchronization law combining a vision-based observer with the attitude synchronization law presented in our previous works. We then prove that when the leader does not rotate, the visual robotic network with the control law achieves visual feedback attitude synchronization. Moreover, for a rotating leader, we evaluate the tracking performance of the other bodies. In analysis, we employ the notion of input-to-state stability and L2-gain performance regarding the leader's angular velocity as an external disturbance. Finally, the validity of the proposed control law and the analysis is demonstrated through simulations.

    This paper investigates an optimal search problem under the assumption that a target to be found appears randomly and stays for a fixed time interval. We first formulate the search problem as an optimization problem to maximize the probability of finding the target while reducing the control energy consumption, and provide a solution to this problem. In this paper, we moreover derive the expectation value of how many times the target appears without being found and a necessary and sufficient condition for the agent's behavior to converge to a periodic trajectory. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through a numerical simulation.

    In this paper we consider attitude coordination on balanced graphs, where kinematics of each rigid-body is modeled in SE (3). We show that the kinematics in SE (3) satisfies a passivity property with a positive definite storage function and propose an angular velocity, control law for each rigid-body that decreases the sum of the storage functions of the individual rigid-bodies. Attitude coordination results if all rigid-bodies rotation matrices are positive definite and the communication graph is connected. We show that the speed of convergence in the attitude coordination problem is determined by the second smallest eigenvalue of graph Laplacian. Our results are also extended to the case when there are delays in communication among rigid-bodies and communication failures. Using the concept of brief instability we show that attitude coordination is still achieved even if the graph is changed. Finally, the results are demonstrated through numerical simulations.

    We consider a high-pressure steam condenser, which is a constrained system with various saturation characteristics and physical constraints on the input and output signals. If these constraints are not properly accounted for, then a rapid change of disturbance may lead to constraint violations and, as a result, cause control performance deterioration or mess up stable operations of the system. It is thus desired to avoid the constraint violations due to such a change of disturbance. This paper presents a method for reducing the risk of the constraint violations by using an additional mechanism called a reference governor, which modifies a reference signal and inputs the resulting signal to the closed-loop system designed a priori. Simulation and experimental results show that the present simple reference governor algorithm is quite effective in control of the high-pressure steam condenser.

    This paper presents two off-line design methods of a reference governor for constrained systems subject to a class of bounded disturbances. Both of these methods assure the infinite-time constraint fulfillment by settling the state variable into the maximal constrained positively invariant (CPI) set at the final instance of reference management. In order to improve the transient response, we introduce two performance indices based on l1 and l2 norms. Then, in both methods, the design of the reference governor is formulated as the minimization of worst-case performance under the constraint that the state should be settled into the maximal CPI set for any bounded disturbance in the prescribed class. It is shown that the reference governor designs based on the l1 and l2 norms are reduced respectively to a linear programming and a convex programming, which can be efficiently solved by existing numerical algorithms. The effectiveness of the present methods is demonstrated by a numerical example.

    本年度は,申請書に以下の課題について研究を実施した.
    課題1:安定な協調の実現を保証する半自律型分散協調制御アーキテクチャの設計
    課題2:人の特性学習と自律性決定機構の設計
    課題3:検証実験の実施
    課題1については受動性と呼ばれるシステム論に基づいて,安定性を理論的に保証するアーキテクチャおよび人間が満たすべき性質を導出することに成功した.また,シミュレータを用いた被験者実験を行い,制御性能,人間負荷などあらゆる観点から提案システムの有効性を検証した.課題2についてはガウス過程回帰に基づく人間モデルの構築と分散情報に基づく自律性決定機構の設計を行い,被験者実験を通して,提案メカニズムが制御性能と負荷の両面で手動制御を大きく上回ることを確認した.以上の成果は,来年度出版予定の書籍『Cyber-Physical-Human Systems: Fundamentals and Applications』への掲載が決定された.また,3次元空間上の操作を補助するため,VRインターフェースを用いたシステム構築と,VR技術が人間に与える影響について解析を行い,その成果は現在国際会議論文投稿に向けて原稿執筆中である.課題3については,本学の実験フィールドRobot Zoo SkyにおいてVR技術を利用した半自律協調制御システムの構築に成功した.当初予定したスマート農業教育研究フィールドを利用した屋外実験についても順調に整備が進められており,屋外制御実験用のドローンの選定や制御に必要となる整備項目を明らかにした.
