    In order to achieve much higher recording density of a magnetic disk drive, the disk surface is required to be as smooth as possible. From a viewpoint of head-slider motion, micro-waviness or relatively short wavelength components on the disk surface become an issue. The authors develop a traceable surface profile measuring instrument for the magnetic rigid disk along the circumferential track. Micro-waviness of the disk surface is evaluated using modified roughness/waviness parameters in such a way that the original profile is decomposed into several wavelength bands considering the size of the head slider. This assessment method is effective to distinguish a subtle difference in the micro-waviness. Having compared with another optical instrument on the market, it was revealed that the developed measurement system has high accuracy and flexibility in setting measuring conditions so that it can provide the results identical with those from the optical instrument.

    The asperity summit or pit bottom based on the surface wavelength was analyzed in contradiction to the contour mapping method. The recommended sampling conditions for the surface texture measurement were also proposed. The concept of linkage of neighboring summits was introduced so that the anisotropy and the directional surface wavelength could be revealed. The angular distribution of asperity tip directions was presented as a directional index for anisotropic surface textures.

    Most plastic surfaces are textured to suppress specular reflection and to enhance their aesthetic quality. Those surface textures are generated in the injection molding process. First of all in this paper, some significant 3-D geo-stastistical parameters for assessing the textured surfaces were selected and their measuring conditions were introduced. Geometrical transfer from the mold to the plastic surfaces could be evaluated by the parameter values. Experimental results and multi-variate analysis showed that reflection luminance distribution of the isotropic surface texture can be well correlated with the 3-D local slope distribution of the facets and some aesthetic indices of visual inspection can be expressed by a combination of those parameters.

    Micro-waviness has been defined in the hard disk industry as the amplitude component just between roughness and waviness wavelength. The disk micro-waviness may cause microscopic fluctuation in the head/disk spacing and so a special attention is paid to the relationship between the two properties. From an engineering standpoint that the spacing fluctuation might result in amplitude modulation of head readout signal, a number of hard disks that have various micro-waviness components were prepared in order to investigate the correlation between the disk micro-waviness and the head readout signal. The experimental analysis showed that the average amplitude of disk micro-waviness is well correlated to the amplitude modulation of the head readout signal in a certain wavelength band. A method to estimate the longer wavelength limit of micro-waviness as well as readout signal was also presented.

    This paper deals with lateral spacing parameters of the three-dimensional surface topography data. To begin with, the method for calculating the mean surface wavelength was introduced being based on auto-correlation analysis for the virtual surface composed of orthogonal sine waves. By applying this technique to measured data, a fairly good correlation was obtained between the mean surface wavelength and lateral spacing of adjacent asperities. Additionally, the method for deciding the calculation region of the local slope and the summit shape was developed and the necessary condition for sampling interval was shown.

    The authors develop a fast algorithm for low- and high-pass Gaussian digital filters, executed while one discrete datum of a traced profile is sampled. In this report, the 8-step, modified running-box-function filter is presented. The transmission characteristics of this new filter are very close to those of the Gaussian digital filter given in ISO 468-1982.     By using a confocal scanning laser microscope (SLM) which is commercially available, the topography data of surface texture can be easily obtained in a short time. However, unreasonable short-wavelength components tend to be included in the raw data, when compared with the data obtained through a contact stylus instrument. In order to eliminate such noisy components, a digital filtering process was proposed and its design procedure in the spatial frequency domain was developed. The functional performance of the digital filtering was discussed with regard to the surface textures'created by several machining methods. A fairly good agreement was reached between the corrected SLM data and the reference data in respect of perspective 3-D plots and some conventional roughness parameters. On the other hand, this filtering process showed unsatisfactory effects on certain local geometry parameters of surface texture.

    The authors develop a fast-processing algorithm of low- and high-pass Gaussian digital filters executed while one discrete data of traced profile is sampled. In this report, the 8-step modified running-box-function filter is newly presented. The transmission characteristics of this new filter are very close to those of Gaussian digital filter provided by ISO 468-1982. Furthermore, the conditions to utilize this filter are shown for a practical use.

    Sometimes the aliasing effect may change characteristics of surface asperity data which are sampled discretely. In this report, the behaviors of asperity data affected with aliasing are made clear by the simulation using the power law of traced profile of asperities. In general, very small sampling intervals are needed to eliminate the aliasing. As it is not profitable to reduce the sampling interval for aliasing only, the authors present the hybrid low-pass filter composed by both of Gaussian digital filter and analogue one. This new hybrid filter is able to reduce the aliasing and the phase delay even if larger sampling interval is applied. This paper gives the applicable conditions of the hybrid filter for practical use.

    The surface roughness parameters in ISO are obtained according to the mean-line system based on the high-pass digital Gaussian filter called the phase-corrected-filter. As the discrete data are used, the transmission characteristics of filter have the error caused by the inadequate range of convolution integral and space of data. This paper deals with an optimum condition of the high-pass digital filter for the roughness profile. The new knowledges of this paper are as follows. (1)The allowable error of transmission characteristics is determined as 2% at the point where the fluctuation of roughness parameters increase radically. (2)The range of convolution integral is given by 0.9 times the cut-off length. (3)The condition applied to the filter by this paper is compared with that recommended by ISO. (4)The roughness parameters by the mean line system differ little from those by the center line system which is a traditional method except Sk and Sm.

    This paper presents an optimum condition to obtain the root-mean-square slope of the profile Δq, and an application method of Gaussian low-pass digital filter to eliminate high-frequency noises. The main conclusions are as follows. (1) The range of convolution integral is 0.9 times cut-off wavelength λs and the space of data is λs/12. (2) It is appropriate that Δq is calculated by means of the seven-point method of numerical difference according to Lagrange's interpolation. (3) We make clear the effect of fluctuation of sampling interval on Δq. (4) The low-pass filter affects little the roughness parameters in the direction of profile height but largely those in the direction of profile length.

    This research aims at the measurement and evaluation of multi-resolution analysis of extremely fine-finished surface which is produced by leading-edge manufacturing process in a range of single nanometer.
    First of all, surface profiles were analyzed experimentally, so that the surface property in FRACTAL view changed from self affine properties to more complicated properties over the range of 8nm to 3nm in Ra value. Then the wavelet analysis was applied instead of fourier analysis.
    The wavelet transform and wavelet expansion were approached. As the results, wavelet spectral distribution is changed and it shows a same tendency to fourier spectral distribution. But in the range of non-fractal region the wavelet spectral distribution shows a linear relation in its power and wave number. This prove to be expected that a super fine machined surface has some self affine property that can be described with wavelet manner.
    Finally, as a future work in the range of less than single nanometer Ra surface the surface properties are expected to be affected the existence of boundary atoms, so that the surface properties should be discussed on quantum aspect.

    As to the industrial products nowadays, surface texture has become much more important factor to affect their surface quality and functional performances. It is difficult to properly evaluate the surface texture by the profile method due to shortage of dimensional freedom. Then areal measurement and evaluation of the surface texture has been required. For this reason, 3-D surface topography measurement instruments are to be used. Assessment procedures for areal surface texture and calibration method are now under discussion in the technical committee of ISO. And some material measures for calibration of the instruments are proposed as the areal calibration standards. However, 3-D roughness standard composed of irregular micro geometry is not included in the draft. Such kinds of measurement standards are essentially used to identify the specific measurement characteristics of the instruments.
    In order to verify the software programs for calculating surface texture parameters, a software gauge with random surface topography data based on a non-causal 2-dimensional autoregressive model was developed. The NC machining data was produced by the same method.
    It was premised that the material measures is mechanically made by ball end-mill with small diameter. Minimum wavelength and amplitude was introduced by knowing the cutter diameter and tip geometry, and surface roughness standard was geometrically simulated. The cutter geometry was optically measured using a microscope. It was revealed that the simulation results were directly linked to the cutter geometry.
    An accurate milling machine was designed and constructed. Then the material measures were manufactured with the generated NC data. Measured results by a stylus instrument were compared with the simulation results in terms of surface texture parameters. Confirmation was made whether the material measure could be machined by following the prepared data. In addition to the experimentally constructed machine, an ultra-precision machine on the market was utilized to manufacture the material measures.
    Validity of the manufactured material measures was studied by comparing the measured results with the simulation results. In the case of a stylus instrument, both results were close to each other. But optical instruments such as laser microscope, optical stylus and white light interferometer produced different measured results from the simulation result. Topography SEM is also alike. Since the material measure is truly made by the theoretically generated NC data in this study, it may be concluded that the developed manufacturing system as well as the material measure itself are practically useful for calibrating the surface topography instruments on the market.

    This research aims at the measurement and evaluation of multi-scale properties of extremely finished surface which is produced by leading-edge manufacturing process in order of sub-nanometer.
    The purpose is to dear experimentally the property change of surface frequency-amplitude relation from 1/f to white in accordance with the grade of surface finish of HD substrate and head of magnetic media, and to contribute the fields of surface analysis and functional modeling of surface structure of above mentioned fine finished parts.
    This research made clear the change of surface structure by Fractal analysis from real surface data which was measured by vertical scanning white light interferometric microscope.
    Super file finished surface structure was analyzed from power spectrum density of measured surface which has sub-nanometer Ra value. The measurement has done selecting the field of view of microscope so that wide spectrum density was acquired.
    As the results, in the surface that has sub-nanometer Ra the slope of power spectral density of surface profile decreases with decrease its Ra value. Then the Fractal dimension increases with decrease Ra value. At the finest surface the dimension reached 2 which is a impossible value. This means these surfaces change its property from Fractal region to near white region.

    1.電磁変換特性の測定
    ○前年度に導出した実験条件に従い,電磁変換特性のデータ収集システムを用いて,ディスクとヘッドの電磁変換特性の測定を行った.
    2.電磁変換特性とマイクロうねりの関係の明確化
    ○電磁変換特性からヘッドの浮上高さを予測するための計算式を用いて,測定された電磁変換特性から,ヘッドの浮上挙動を予測した.
    ○振幅や周波数をフィルタを用いて分析することによって,マイクロうねりが浮上特性に影響を与える関係を明らかにした.
    ○前年度に測定されたディスクのマイクロうねり形状に対して,包絡線方式のモルフォロジーフイルタと柔軟なスプラインフィルタを適用し,ヘッドの浮上挙動を想定した形状データの解析,及びパラメトリック評価を行った
    ○以上の解析に基づき,測定された電磁変換特性,動的挙動,及びマイクロうねりの相互関係を明らかにした.そして,電磁変換特性からディスクのマイクロうねり,及びヘッド浮上軌跡の推定方法を確立して,ヘッドの浮上に影響を与えるディスク基板の輪郭うねり形状の波長の範囲を提示した.
    3.グライド特性とマイクロうねりの関係の測定
    ○用意したサンブルディスクについて,グライドヘッドを用いてグライド特性の測定を行った.
    ○グライド測定の結果を解析し,ディスクのマイクロうねりがグライド特性に与える影響について調査した.
    3.研究成果の公表
    ○上記2の項目について,得られた研究成果を国内学術雑誌,及び国際会議(ASPE)で発表した.

    Wet-blasting and Wire Electric Discharge Grinding methods are applicable to manufacturing the isotropic random surfaces for calibration of profiling instruments on the market. Quality engineering techniques were applied to obtain the optimized machining conditions by which uniform surface texture can be successfully produced. On the other hand a computer program to generate various sets of discrete topographic data by following the auto-regressive model was accomplished. The common data file format (partly modified SDF) was introduced for both measured surface topographic data and simulation data calculated by a computer. Established was the methodology by which we can divide the measurement uncertainty into the part related to measuring principle including instrument hardware and that caused by software to calculate certain geo-statistical parameters. Some differences in the parameter definitions were disclosed among the software attached to representative commercial instruments. The measurement uncertainty analysis in this research project was limited to the dynamic behavior of sensing devices. It means that the uncertainty component caused mainly by mechanical structure was not taken into account. Commercial and practical surface profiling instruments being based on the optical non-contact method were roughly classified into conventional scanning system by a point-type displacement sensor and areal interferometer system. In the former case, outlier detection and data correction was conducted in the 2D linear system. For the latter case, the similar data pre-processing was utilized in the 3D areal system. The performances of those pre-processing programs were studied through the representative geo-statistical parameters using the manufactured random surfaces. Finally the all-purpose surface topography analyzing software named by "Summit" was completed.

    【平成11年度の成果】
    1.しぼ加工を有する射出成形金型による射出成形品サンプルを得た.射出成形金型のしぼの深さを3段階に,面全体の曲率を4段階に変化させ,計12種類の金型を作成した.さらにそれぞれの金型で5段階の型温度で成形を行い,微小突起の曲率やしぼの深さを変化させた成形品サンプルを得た.
    2.作成された同サンプルについて,視覚,触覚に関する官能検査を実施した.
    3.昨年度明らかにした測定条件に従い,同サンプルの表面テクスチャを測定して凹凸形状データを得た.さらに昨年度に作成したソフトウェアを使用して,その表面の幾何学的特性を定量化した.
    4.昨年度に作成した反射光強度の測定装置を用いて,サンプルの反射光強度の角度分布,及び面内分布の測定を行った.また光沢度測定器を用いて光沢度の測定を行った.反射光強度の角度分布が微細面素の傾斜と強く相関していることが確認できた.
    5.以上の官能検査による評価値,光沢度,局所輝度の角度分布,及び輝度の面内分布との関係について重回帰分析により線形化を行った.その結果,しぼの深さという幾何学的特性が「柔らかさ」,「光沢」,「滑らかさ」といった官能検査の結果と相関があることがわかった.また,面全体の曲率が,「柔らかさ」と相関のあることが明らかになった.
    6.昨年度に基礎的な部分の開発を行った幾何光学に基づいた輝度分布シミュレーションのソフトウェアについて,精度を高めるための改良を行った.その結果,しぼ面の凹凸形状データからシミュレートされたイメージは反射光強度の面内分布の映像に近いものとなった.

    本企画研究では研究組織(研究代表者、分担者)に限定することなく、精密工学会産学協同研究協議会、ISO/TC 213国内対策委員会等と連携して情報調査および研究課題の遂行と研究企画の立案を行った。また、国外の研究協力者としてアメリカ合衆国(ノースカロライナ・シャーロッテ大学)のRaja教授、英国(ハダースフィールド大学)のStout教授、ドイツ(ケムニッツ大学)のディーチ教授に参画を依頼し、折りに触れて情報交換を行う形態を取った。活動内容は、国内研究組織全体を中心とした6回の研究企画会議とグループごとの調査活動および情報資料整理であった。まず、面領域の表面テクスチャに関する従来の測定技術資料を調査収集するとともに、市販されている測定機器の類別と公称の性能仕様を整理した。また、測定機器ごとに特徴的な用途を調査し、産業界での使用実状を把握した。他方で、測定対象の表面機能調査を幅広く行い、機能分類と表現法の基準化を試みた。その過程で、表面機能と対応する表面テクスチャの定量化パラメータに関する産業界のニーズと規格化の方向性を見出した。続いて、欧米を中心に提唱されている表面テクスチャの三次元評価パラメータとその算出法について参考文献を収集整理し、問題点や改良点を明らかにするとともに、対応策を掲げた。特に、測定条件の適正化とサンプリングデータの前処理手法の規範画一化が最優先課題であるとし、協同研究の具体化案を作成した。補充事項として、測定機器の校正法と信頼性解析法に関する討議を行った。今後、工業技術院計量研究所および(財)日本規格協会と連携した研究組織を創生することにした。

    First of all in this study, a distinguished stylus instrument with extremely light load was developed to measure envelope curves along the circumferential tracks of disk surface. Pointed out were the higher measurement accuracy (±1nm/15mm) and the wider surface wavelength band than conventional optical interferometers on the market. An elaborate geometrical regression technique was developed to obtain the proper amplitude data with high S/N ratio.
    Considering the head slider size and its follow-up motion to disk surface, the measuring conditions (sampling interval, evaluation length) for assessing the micro-waviness of disk surface were established and a conventional filtering method was adopted to divide the original envelope curve into several wavelength bands. A fairy good agreement was obtained between the processed profiles with the developed instrument and the commercial optical interferometer, OptiFlat. In this stage, some geo-statistical parameters such as mean wavelength, arithmetic mean amplitude and Motif parameters were introduced to evaluate the micro-waviness of disk surfaces.
    Additionally, the head readout signal was measured and analyzed to know the relationship between the disk surface profile and the head flying height in operation. The micro-waviness component was closely related to the electro-magnetic conversion characteristics at the head/disk interface. It can be concluded that the disk micro-waviness has a great influence on the physical head-disk separation or the information storage density of HDD.
