SrTiO3-δ having controlled oxygen defect density (i.e., electron density) was synthesized, and the photocatalytic activities for hydrogen and oxygen evolution were found to be increased linearly with increasing the electron density from ~10E17 cm-3. Trapping effect of photoexcited charge carriers at the surface of SrTiO3-δ was investigated by measuring emission lifetimes of ruthenium complexes adsorbed on the SrTiO3-δ surface. The result showed that increasing the oxygen defect density in SrTiO3-δ could suppress electron injection from the excited state of the ruthenium complex. Using several ruthenium complexes that had different excited state oxidation potentials, it was possible to measure the energy level of defects existing in the semiconductor.

We have attempted to create innovative functions unique to mixed anion compounds, targeting applications in photocatalysts and photoelectrodes, secondary battery components, phosphors, and electronic materials. In the study of energy-conversion-type photocatalysts, we found that anion-doped titanium dioxide, layered oxynitrides, and oxyfluorides, which had not been candidates for investigation due to technical issues and preconceptions, could be new visible light responsive photocatalysts. Some of the anion-doped oxides were also shown to be effective as secondary battery materials. For phosphor materials, we have established a guideline for controlling excitation and emission wavelengths that is not limited to material systems through band control by anion coexistence. In the study of electronic materials, unique electronic properties associated with complex anionization were observed in many systems.

Hybrid photocatalysts that consist of ruthenium complex and organic semiconductor carbon nitride are capable of reducing carbon dioxide into formic acid upon visible light. This research project aimed at improving the efficiency of the hybrid system by refining both the metal complex and the semiconductor parts, as well as controlling the product distribution of carbon dioxide reduction. Modification of carbon nitride nanosheets with silver nanoparticles resulted in significant enhancement of efficiency of carbon dioxide reduction in ruthenium-complex/carbon nitride hybrid system. Regarding the control of the product distribution, selective carbon monoxide formation was realized by changing metal complex from previously reported ruthenium to ruthenium-rhenium binuclear complex (or iron complex).

We developed a new powdered photocatalyst consisting of Co(OH)2 and TiO2. It is well known that TiO2 is an active photocatalyst, but only works under UV irradiation. By contrast, the Co(OH)2/TiO2 hybrid photocatalyst is capable of absorbing visible light with wavelengths of up to 850 nm and oxidizing water into oxygen gas, even though it consists of only earth-abundant elements only. To our knowledge, this system provides the first demonstration of a photocatalytic material capable of water oxidation upon excitation by visible light up to such a long wavelength.

Metal species that can be photodeposited with Cr on the surface of strontium titanate powder were explored. As a result, it was found that Au and Pd fit the bill, and worked as cocatalysts for hydrogen evolution in photocatalytic overall water splitting when mixed with Cr species. Detailed investigations on the Pd/Cr system indicated that the photocatalytic activity for overall water splitting depended strongly on the structure and electronic state of the Pd/Cr multicomponent cocatalyst. The mechanism by which the Pd/Cr nanoparticles were formed was also discussed on the basis of experimental results.
