    We report atomic mass measurements of the unstable nuclides 73−75 Ni, 73−78 Cu, and 74−78 Zn, which have been accomplished using multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with new technical developments to resolve challenges for exotic-isotope identification and selection. The isotopes were produced in-flight at the RIKEN’s Radioactive Ion Beam Facility and delivered to the combined gas cell and multi-reflection system installed downstream of the ZeroDegree spectrometer. The incoming high-energy beam was energy-degraded and subsequently stopped in a helium gas cell. The energy degrader thickness was optimized using a new method that employs signals from plastic scintillators located upstream and downstream of the helium-filled gas cell. Extracted isotopes of interest were mass-selected by the in-MRTOF deflector method, for which we discuss simultaneous selection of multiple isobar chains. The ions of interest were identified unambiguously using β-decay-correlated mass measurements for the first time, which is demonstrated for 78 Zn. The new mass values are compared with literature values and recent measurements performed at JYFLTRAP and ISOLTRAP, where a generally good agreement is observed.

    Abstract

    To detect and track structural changes in atomic nuclei, the systematic study of nuclear levels with firm spin-parity assignments is important. While linear polarization measurements have been applied to determine the electromagnetic character of gamma-ray transitions, the applicable range is strongly limited due to the low efficiency of the detection system. The multi-layer Cadmium-Telluride (CdTe) Compton camera can be a state-of-the-art gamma-ray polarimeter for nuclear spectroscopy with the high position sensitivity and the detection efficiency. We demonstrated the capability to operate this detector as a reliable gamma-ray polarimeter by using polarized 847-keV gamma rays produced by the $$^{56}\textrm{Fe}$$($${ p},{ p'}\gamma $$) reaction. By combining the experimental data and simulated calculations, the modulation curve for the gamma ray was successfully obtained. A remarkably high polarization sensitivity was achieved, compatible with a reasonable detection efficiency. Based on the obtained results, a possible future gamma-ray polarimetery is discussed.

    Abstract

    Previously, we developed an α-TOF detector for correlated measurements of atomic masses and decay properties of radioactive isotopes using a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph, and successfully demonstrated α-decay-correlated mass measurements of heavy and superheavy nuclides. In this work, we develop a β-TOF detector, an improvement upon the α-TOF detector, to extend this technology to β-decaying nuclides. Online commissioning with 81Ga yielded a measured half-life of 1.44(31) s, in agreement with the previous literature, and confirmed the efficiency of detecting a decay-correlated event to be consistent with the solid angle limitation.

    Abstract

    We developed a laser frequency stabilization and an optical fiber transmission system for the the francium electric dipole moment search. The absolute accuracy of a laser frequency stabilization scheme using a state-of-the-art commercial wavelength meter was 0.48 MHz at ±2 nm and -1.33 MHz at ±200 nm from calibration wavelength, respectively, and the frequency instability is below 10-9 with a standard deviation of 0.56 MHz over 60 hours. We also demonstrated that a 400 m long fiber laid between laboratories can transmit 30 mW of trapping laser light, which is sufficient for a magneto-optical trapping of francium. The polarization crosstalk in the fiber was stable at -25 dB over 12 hours of measurement.

    We installed a 400-m-long polarization-maintaining fibers for magneto-optical trapping of Francium atoms. Fiber polarization stability of ~9×10-4 was achieved with an averaging time of 10 seconds, which even allows fluorescence observation at 20 atoms.

    Abstract

    An in-flight separator performs the important role of separating a single specific radioactive isotope (RI) beam from the thousands of RI beams produced by in-flight fission as well as projectile fragmentation. However, when looking at ``separation'' from a different viewpoint, more than 99% of simultaneously produced RI beams are just eliminated in the focal plane slits or elsewhere in the separator. In order to enhance the effective usability of the RIKEN in-flight separator BigRIPS, we have been developing an innovative method: parasitic laser ion source (PALIS), which implements parasitic low-energy RI beam production by saving eliminated RI beams during BigRIPS experiments. In this paper, we present the expected benefits and feasibility for the PALIS concept and the results of the first stopping examination for high-energy RI beams in the gas cell.

    In this proceeding, a new proposal aiming to improve the precision of the proton Zemach radius will be presented. A circularly polarized laser will be shed on a sample of muonic hydrogen in its ground state. By observing the maximum muon decay asymmetry during scanning laser wave length, the ground-state hyperfine splitting energy can be identified, which is directly related to Zemach radius.citedupays The precision of Zemach radius by this measurement is estimated to be three times better compared to PSI experiment. This result will contribute to the solution of proton size puzzle.

    Slow radioactive ion beams have been produced with an overall efficiency of 4% by thermalizing energetic ions produced by a projectile fragment separator in a He-gas cell and guiding them to a vacuum vessel by dc and rf fields. Space charge was observed to have a limiting effect. Since the ionization of He atoms by energetic ions creates a region of high space charge, many thermalized ions of interest are pushed toward the walls of the gas cell. Such losses have been investigated for different incoming ion intensities.

    Aiming at the optical measurement of the valence neutron distribution radius of the neutron halo nucleus Be-11, the gas catcher cell using RF ion guide method to provide slow RI beams and laser spectroscopy apparaus have been developed. It was confirmed that we can extract Cs ions from the gas cell with an enough efficiency to apply for online experiments. Besides that, the development of 313 nm laser system is expected to been compleded in the near future. These results will enable us to conduct the high precision laser spectroscopy for Be-11 to deduce hyperfine anomaly of Be-11 in a few years.

    In order to search for EDM in a diamagnetic atom Xe-129, which if present will constitute an undeniable evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model, we have conducted frequency stabilization studies and co-magnetometer development.
    As a result, a co-running spin maser of Xe-131, a spin 3/2 isotope of Xe-129, has been proven to serve as an excellent co-magnetometer with high compensation powers against the magnetic field and Rb density drifts. A digitalized feedback architecture and temperature stabilization systems have been implemented. Thus, all the factors perceived to cause the frequency drifts became under control, but at the same time, this has disclosed the presence of another effect causing the drift, i.e., the spin phase deviation of Rb from Xe due to the feedback field. A method to avoid this effect has been proposed and its validity demonstrated, thus indicating a prospect for an order of magnitude improvement from the present experimental upper limit on the Xe-129 EDM.

    Due to the high transition probabilities to the neighboring states, highly excited Rydberg atoms emit a superradiacne radiation including a THz wave which has recently attracted much attention. Superradiance has been hard to observe in a cold Rydberg atoms, due to the mode-matching within a nonuniformly distributed atomic sample and strong atomic interactions. However, in the preceding study, the researchers observed the evidence of superradiance in a cold Rydberg Rb gas under the conditions which did not satisfy the Dicke condition. In order to systematically study a wide range of the mode-matching conditions, the improved optical system for laser trapping made larger cold Rb atoms than the previous ones and the optical system for the Rydberg excitation laser of a much higher power was designed.

    With a novel ion trapping method, cryogenic rf-carpet ion guide, and a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph, the masses of more than 80 nuclear fusion reaction products including short-lived Ra isotopes (T1/2= 10 ms) and several trans-uranium isotopes of Es, Md were measured. The highest precisions of ~0.03 ppm were achieved for Ga isotopes and most of well-known nuclides, our masses agree with the literature values. However, some discrepancies were found in old indirect measurements. It suggested that such indirect measurements must be revised with comprehensive direct mass measurements.
    The masses of four isotopes in Es and Md were measured for the first time. From them, the masses of 7 isotopes in super-heavy elements up to Mt were indirectly determined and comparison with various nuclear models and confirmation of N=152 shell closure were performed.

    A magneto-optical trap and a pulse dye laser for were developed for rubidium atoms to produce ultra cold Rydberg atoms. As a preparation experiment for quantum control of ultra cold Rydberg atoms, the spectra of several different nd states for cold Rb atoms at a long time delay after laser excitation to the Rydberg states. The results were discussed from the point of view of black body radiation effect and inelastic Rydberg-electron collision effect.

    The absolute frequency of 2s^2S_<1/2>-2p^2P_<3/2> transition for beryllium isotopes including the neutron halo nucleus Be-11 was measured by high precision laser spectroscopy with the laser frequency calibration by a frequency comb. From the results, the charge radii for Be isotopes, Be^+-7, 9, 10, 11, was systematically determined with accuracies less than 2%.
