    <p>After the national universities becoming into the national university corporations, the status of the technical staffs of the universities has been reviewed actively from the viewpoint of their career paths and skill improvement to increase their motivation and activity. Some unique proposals and initiatives have been practiced. In Tottori University, the university technology administrator (UTA), a management person in the technical staff's organization, was created as a career path model and in Gunma University, the Meister Education Program, as a novel skill improvement method. In this paper, we introduce some examples of career path models and skill improvement methods of technical staffs in Japanese national universities and American national laboratory as a comparison.</p>

    Our object is application of chitosan derivatives possessed cell attracting effects to drug delivery systems. In this study, we obtained following results :
    1)Hydrothermal reaction is useful for decomposition of chitosan and the other acetals. Using this treatment, we can obtain chitosan with low molecular weight easily.
    2)New chitosan derivatives with hydrophobic, phenolic and carboxyl groups were synthesized. w by reductive alkylation reaction of chitosan with aldehyds and oxidization of chitosan. The hyrophobized chitosan derivatives is advantageous for self-aggregation effect and emulsion formation. The oxidized chitosan derivatives show a unique biological effect.
    3)Chitosan and hydrophobized chitosan derivatives act as a surfactant and stabilize O/W emulsion. In this situation, the organic phase in the emulsion should be encapsulated by the chitosan derivatives. The emulsion was formed by vigorous stirring of a hydrophobic drug in an organic solvent and chitosan in aqueous acetic acid and the chitosan containing the emulsion was solidified by addition of alkaline. Encapsulated drug into chitosan was released by re-dissolution of yielded chitosan containing the organic phase in acidic solution.
    4)Biodegradability is key-step for drug releasing in the system. Blend materials with chitosan derivatives and other biodegradable polymers were prepared. The blend materials composed chitosan enhanced chemical properties and kept biodegradability of chitosan.

    Chitosan is a polysaccharide having various biological activities. The hydrophobized chitosan derivatives are expected to form self aggregates in aqueous solution. Such an aggregation of bioactive polymers are useful for biomaterials. In this study, we have synthesized new hydrophobized chitosan derivatives branched cholesterol or dehydroabietylamine moieties as a side chain to the amino group of chitosan. The self aggregation of he chitosan derivatives were studied by the fluorescence probe method. The results suggested the cholesterol-chitosan derivative formed micelle-like aggregation, while the dehydroabietylamine-chitosan derivative aggregated randomly. Furthermore, we have developed the one-pot introduction of N-benzyl side chains to chitosan using by a Mannich reaction.
