Abstract

Anomalous earthquakes and crustal movements have been observed at Iwate volcano in northern Honshu, Japan, where phreatic eruptions have been feared since February 2024, and the volcanic alert level was raised from 1 to 2 on October 2, 2024. We collected fumarolic gases at two locations in Ojigokudani at Iwate volcano on September 5, 2024, and analyzed their chemical composition and hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope ratios (δD and δ18O) to assess the magmatic contribution to the hydrothermal system, which is useful information for evaluating the activity of volcanoes that produce phreatic eruptions. The characteristics of δD and δ18O indicate that the fumarolic gases are a mixture of local meteoric water and magmatic gas, with the meteoric water component being predominant. The fumarolic gases were poor in HCl, and the SO2/H2S ratio, which is high in high-temperature gases, were low at 0.01 and 0.02. The apparent equilibrium temperatures, which is useful for estimating the temperature of the gas source, were estimated to be 212 and 227 °C. These geochemical properties of fumarolic gases do not indicate that the contribution of magmatic gas was as intense as that during the 1998 unrest when the magmatic intrusion was suspected, but a failed eruption occurred.

Abstract

We propose a new reaction device for the microdiffusion analysis of CO2 in fluid samples from volcanic areas to improve the conventional analysis procedure, which requires a fixative and good handling skills. To accomplish this, a small resin reaction cell for the sample solution and acid (initiator for CO2 liberation) was devised and placed in a commercially available air-tight glass container with a Petri dish to form a microdiffusion analysis unit. The analysis was based on the principles of the conventional manual titration method that uses Ba(OH)2 as the CO2 absorbent. Using the new device, 99.5% recovery, with a relative standard deviation of 4.5% (n = 8), was achieved in a test analysis for 0.03 mmol of CO2 liberated from a Na2CO3 solution as a simulated sample. The analytical performance of the new device was almost comparable to that of conventional units under the experimental conditions of this study. Applying this new device for analyzing fluid samples from volcanic areas will contribute to enhancing the performance by reducing the possibility of CO2 contamination and by simplifying the process by eliminating the need for preparatory cleaning for fixative application.

Chemical composition of the lake water in Yugama crater at Kusatsu-Shirane volcano were analyzed to investigate magma-hydrothermal activity beneath this volcano. At Yugama crater, unrest event such as earthquake swarms and discoloration of lake water have been sometimes observed since the last eruptions in 1982-83. Also in 2019, the increase of earthquakes and discoloration of lake water were observed. The Mg/Cl ratio of the lake water has increased sharply before and after the eruptive period in 1982-1983 (Ohba et al., 2008), but such change is not observed in 2019, at least as of July 1.

Although no fumarolic activity on Mt. Iwoyama of Kirishima volcanic complex has been observed since 2007(Funasaki et al., 2017), new fumaroles have appeared in December 2015.In this study, chemical composition and the stable isotopic ratio of hydrogen and oxygen of thermal waters around Mt. Iwoyama of Kirishima volcanic complex were analyzed and their origin and water quality changes associated with volcanic activity were investigated. Most of them were classified as acid sulfate water and were considered to be originated through the mixing of meteoric water with volcanic fluid basically, but a water collected near the fumarolic area on the summit of Mt. Iwoyama has high chloride concentration and δD and δ18O values. The changes in water quality and δD and δ18O values associated with volcanic activity were also recognized.

Geochemical study on Yugama, a crater lake at Kusatsu-Shirane volcano, has been conducted since 1966. Amounts of various cationic species in Yugama water started increasing around 1981, slightly before the phreatic eruptions in 1982-1983, and kept increasing until 1985. In 1986, they turned to decrease and at present restore their former levels before the eruptions. The concentration of sulfate ion showed a secular change similar to those of cationic species, but no such variation was observed for chloride ion even during the 1976 and 1982-1983 eruptions. However, it started increasing in 1989. A high correlation between the concentrations of chloride and hydrogen ions suggests an increasing influx of hydrogen chloride from the deep volcanic systems under the lake. A Cl--SO42- is an excellent monitor of the variation in volcanic activity at Kusatsu-Shirane volcano; all of the three past activities since 1966, i.e., the high-level subsurface activity in 1968, the eruption in 1976 and the eruptions in 1982-1983, showed a reverse secular change with time in the Cl--SO42- plot. This could be attributable to the function of Yugama water as a condenser of volatiles released underground.

There is no difference between the δD values of the water extracted from coexisting Mgchlorite and sericite in the Iwami Kuroko deposit. The average δD values of the minerals agree with each other in the range from - 49 to - 52‰. This indicates that there is no D/H fractiona-tion between Mg-chlorite and sericite under the hydrothermal condition. The δD value of the hydrothermal solution participated in the formation of these minerals is estimated to be - 10‰according to the fractionation factor determined by O'Neil and Kharaka (1976), or - 23 to - 26‰ according to that estimated from natural samples by Marumo et al. (1980). The value is completely different from that of the contemporary meteoric water in the mining district (average, - 51‰).
The δD value of the water extracted from fluid inclusions in quartz from the ore-veins is - 58 to - 59‰, which is different from those estimated for the hydrothermal solution during the formation of chlorite and sericite. This may indicate that there was a time difference between formation of chlorite-sericite clay and quartz.
δD values of waters released from chlorite-smectite mixed layer mineral, smectite, clinoptilolite and gypsum have also been measured. The δD values of the mixed layer minerals are rather reliable for estimating the δD value of hydrothermal solution, but those of smectite are not useful. The fractionation factors between clinoptilolite-water and gypsum-water are also estimated.

Volcanic fluids are H2O-based fluids containing volatile components degassed from magma, and are valuable media that carry information on degassing magma and hydrothermal fluids to the surface. Magma and hydrothermal fluids are the driving forces behind magmatic and phreatic eruptions, respectively, and observations of volcanic fluids are useful for evaluating volcanic activity. Volcanic gases are particularly suitable for volcanic activity monitoring because they are gaseous and have a large velocity of movement within the crust. The volume of degassed magma can be estimated from remote observation of SO2 contained in the plume directly degassed from the magma. An increase in the CO2/SO2 ratio of the plume is understood to be a precursor to a magmatic eruption. The CO2/SO2 ratio of magmatic gas varies with degassing depth, but it may also increase with sulfur sequestration even at a constant degassing depth, so care must be taken in interpreting the observation results. The mixing of magmatic gas and groundwater and the subsequent formation process of vapor and hydrothermal phases can be understood from the sampling and analysis of fumaroles. The ratio of magmatic to hydrothermal components in fumaroles can be a useful indicator of activity in volcanoes that produce phreatic eruptions.

In the middle of 1980s, the explosive discharges of CO2 gas (= limnic eruption) at Lake Nyos and Monoun killed about 1800 of resident around the lakes. The cause of the limnic eruption was the CO2 gas dissolved in lake water. The CO2 gas is originated in a degassing magma. A thermal water containing CO2 gas is expected to be discharged on the floor of lake bottom. The accumulation of the dissolved CO2 gas is brought by the strongly stratified lake water. The investigation on the water chemistry and the elucidation on the formation of stratification is important for the prediction of next limnic eruption.

In general, fumarolic gas is the steam phase generated after the interaction of magmatic gas and groundwater. In this model, the CO2/H2O ratio of magmatic gas can be estimated by correlating the CO2/H2O ratio and isotope ratio of H2O (D/H and 18O/16O ratios). As the volcanoes with high CO2/H2O ratio, the recent Etna and Izu-Oshima after 1986 eruption can be exampled, the value of which is higher than 0.03. As the volcanoes with low CO2/H2O ratio, Kusatsu-Shirane, Atosanupuri and Hakone can be exampled, the value of which is less than 0.006. The fumarolic gas at Shinmoe volcano in 1994 contained the magmatic gas with 0.03 of CO2/H2O ratio, suggesting the volcano had been ready for the eruption in 2011.

Usu volcano located in southwestern Hokkaido is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. On March 31, 2000, it erupted at the western foot of Nishiyama with successive formation of new craters after 23 years of dormancy. On the following day, another eruption newly forming craters occurred at the western foot of Konpirayama located I km to the east of Nishiyama new craters. Monitoring of volcanic gases discharged from active craters will provide us with authentic information on the volcanic activity, however, due to intermittently violent explosions, vicinity of the new craters were not accessible. Analyses of water-soluble components adhering to volcanic ash were available for estimating composition of volcanic gases and monitoring eruption of Usu volcano. Volcanic ash samples were collected around the volcano for about eight months. All the ash was relatively depleted in SiO_2 and enriched in FeO in comparison with essential ejecta of the historic eruptions of Usu volcano. Smectite was a dominant clay mineral and kaolin was a minor constituent. All the ash samples were hydrated considerably. Temporal variation in the constituent minerals and chemical composition was not recognized. This result designated that variation of the water-soluble components adhering to the ash was not due to change of nature of volcanic ash but due to change of flux and chemical composition of volcanic gases.

A seismic exploration, ASO98, was conducted in Aso Volcano in central Kyushu, Japan. The purpose of this exploration was both to obtain the detailed seismic structures beneath the central cones and to detect the kinematic character of volcanic tremors of Aso Volcano. Six shot points with chemical explosions and a temporary network with 296 seismic stations were deployed over the central cones in a range of 10 km east-west by 9 km north-south. All explosions were completed on 26 November, 1998, and seismic records were successfully acquired at each of 290 stations. This paper reports on the details of ASO98, such as examples of acquired seismic traces for shots, locations of stations and shots, Final first arrival times, amplitude distributions, and examples of records acquired of volcanic tremors. These data are expected to provide much knowledge about volcanic seismology and about Aso Volcano. Further analyses will be described in forthcoming papers.

In general, the apparent equilibrium temperatures calculated for several reactions among gases species in high temperature fumarolic gases does not agree each other. The disagreement has been attributed to the result of some disturbances after a hypothetical equilibrium state of gas. The equilibrium state can be disturbed due to, for example, (1) the difference in reaction rate of SO2+3H2=H2S+2H2O (reaction-1) and CO2+H2=CO+H2O (reaction-2), (2) the addition of an external water or loss of water from gas, (3) the decrease of CO by a reaction with strong alkaline solution used for gas sampling, and (4) the decrease of gas pressure. Under the assumption (1) or (2), two independent equations of mass reaction can be held corresponding to the reactions-1 and -2. Each the two equations involve one unknown parameter and the unknown equilibrium temperature and known concentration of chemical species. Two different unknown parameters corresponding to the assumption (1) and (2) can not be involved into one set of two equations. Therefore the assumption (1) or (2) must be selected prior to the estimation of equilibrium temperature. In this context, an arbitrariness has been left. If a third reaction is found, the two parameters would be evaluated simultaneously. However such a reaction has not been obtained yet. The equilibrium temperatures are calculated under the assumption of (1) and (2) for the previous results of high temperature fumarolic gases from ten volcanoes. The calculated equilibrium temperatures are similar to or higher than the fumarolic temperature in many cases. However, some gases shows the equilibrium temperature lower than the fumarolic temperature, suggesting the requirement of additional reasons for the disequilibrium state of gas other than (1) and (2). The (3) and (4) may be possible to the the additional reasons. The oxygen fugacity of high temperature gases are expected to be controlled by lava, therefore the gases would show specific values for individual volcanoes. The variation of the oxygen fugacity obtained from gas composition of each volcano can be used to infer the cause for disequilibrium state of gas. The equilibrium oxygen fugacities for gases from individual volcanoes converged well under the assumption (1) rather than (2), suggesting that (1) is the dominant factor disturbing the equilibrium state of gases. The overall trend of equilibrium state for gases is the high oxygen fugacity at low temperature and low oxygen fugacity at high temperature. The trend is consistent to the "gas buffering". A relatively oxidized low temperature gas can be made due to the cooling of a reduced high temperature gas with sufficient amount of SO2 and H2S. A gas with limited concentration of SO2 and H2S such as the gases from Showa-Shinzan does not show the oxidizing trend at low temperature. The oxygen fugacity of such a gas is thought to reflect the fugacity at the formation of the gas from magma.

Seismic velocity structures beneath Kirishima volcanoes are estimated down to 3 km from the surface with the differential analysis of refraction from the explosion experiment. Three layers are interpreted in the central and northern part of the volcanoes and two layers are interpreted in the southern part of the volcanoes. Through the northern and middle part of the volcanoes, the first layer whose velocity is 2.1 km/s is almost constant thickness of 0.5 km. The second layer whose velocity is 3.6 km/s is 0.5 km thickness at the end of the northern volcanoes and thicken northwestward into 3 km thickness. The third layer whose velocity is 5.8 km/s is estimated. In the southern part of the volcanoes, all velocities are higher than those of the northern or middle part. Several features appear in the profiles; a discontinuity around Takachiho-gawara in the south part of the volcanoes, north-westward declination of the third layer as a basement, and no low velocity zone beneath recent active craters down to 3 km depth. These results are consistent with the results of Magnetotelluric survey.

The relation between mercury emission rates (φ) and temperature at the site RH was found to satisfy the Arrehenius equation, however, φ changes depending on the underground temperature (Tg), not the chamber temperature (Tc). Although ln(φ) changes linearly against Tc^-1 (Arrehenius equation), we can clearly see that the intercepts of the Arrehenius plot is different for the data recorded on morning (temperature increased with time) and evening (temperature decreased with time). The mechanisim for the difference in intercept is interpreted as a delayed response of the subsurface temperature (Tg) to the change in chamber temperature (Tc). On the basis of the consideration using the heat conduction equation, mercury emission rates (φ) changes depending on the ground temperature at a depth of two centimeters. Using the empirical relation obtained in this study, we modified the spatial distribution and temporal changes in GEM emission rate from volcanoes.

We conducted multidisciplinary research on Taal Volcano and Mayon Volcano in the Philippines and carried out comprehensive observation and analysis in the fields of seismology, electromagnetics, geodesy, and geochemistry, in particular, for Taal Volcano.
As a result, we found that there was a large hydrothermal reservoir or a magma reservoir in the shallow part of Taal Volcano. In addition, from the observation of volcanic gas at multiple sites, it was found that the chemical composition of the gas is changing in coordination.
In the Philippines, there is no expert of gravity survey which was performed in the 1990s. Therefore, gravity measurement was carried out at Taal Volcano and a gravity reference point was re-established. In electromagnetic observation, we succeeded in confirming the apparent resistivity change associated with the swarm activity.

Volcanic eruption is a complex natural phenomenon, and the possibility of eruption increases if the discharge flow rate of magmatic gas is large, which is the driving force of eruption. However, in many cases the increase of magmatic gas flux does not lead to eruption. In this study, we collected and analyzed the volcanic gases repeatedly at Mt Hakone, Mt Kusatsu Shirane and Mt Kirishima-Iwoyama, and compared with geophysical parameters such as seismic activity. We concluded that the ratio of magmatic components such as He and CO2 to the hydrothermal components such as H2S and CH4 increase when the eruptive potential rises.

We carried out a basic experiment by which the acidity of natural water such as the lake water in active volcanoes. For the exciting light, 532nm 0.6W laser was employed. For the detection of Raman light, a monochrometer and a photomultiplier were used. In a laboratory, water solutions with various acidities were excited by the laser and the back scattering Raman light was observed with the distance of 30 cm. The characteristic Raman light originating in the vibration of H2O molecules were detected at 642 and 650 nm of wave length for the peak in spectra. The relative height of those peaks was correlated to the acidity of solution, implying the possibility of remote sensing of water acidity based on the Raman light observation.

The high temperature fumarolic gasi is the source of SPM emitted from active volcanoes. In order to investigate the control on the chemical composition of high temperature volcanic gas, a degassing model of magma was constructed based on the data observed at Mt. Unzen. The volcanic gas rich in CO_2 and SO_2was estimated to be separated from magma at depth -8 km from surface. The degassed magma again exsolved a gas phase rich in H_O and CH1 at depth shallower than -1 km.
The amount of SPM would be proportional to the flux of SO_2 gas. As a case study, the mechanism of SO_2 degassing was investigated at Miyakejima volcano. A diffused SO_2 gas was sampled at the flank of volcano by using the so called chemical trap method. In the method, a KOH solution was exposed over several months under open air. The volcanic SO_2 gas was absorbed into the KOH solution. At the absorption, the occurrence of a kinetically isotopic fractionation was confirmed by an laboratory experiment. Employing the experimentally determined isotopic fractionation, the δ^<34>S of S in magma of Miyakejima volcano was estimated to be identical to the value typical to the Quarternary volcanoes in Japan. The temporal change in the observed δ^<34> S of SO_2 gas, a monotonically decreasing, δ^<34> S, could be attributed to the open system degassing of magma. The isotopic fractionation between gas phase and magma depends on oxygen fugacity. The oxygen fugacity necessary to produce the isotopic fractionation compatible to the open degassing of magma was estimated to be +0.6 to +1.2 log unit higher than Ni-NiO oxygen fugacity buffer.

In order to investigate the magma system of this Rabaul caldera and to evaluate the recent activities of the volcanoes, an international scientific research project was performed from 2001 to 2003. During 2001-2003, Japanese team visited Rabaul three times and made cooperative observations with the Rabaul volcanological Observatory (RVO). In 2001, we clarified basic chronology for tephras from 1994 and some historical eruptions and collect rock samples for further chemical analyses. Geochemical surveys were carried out in 2002 and 2003. Fumarolic gases and hot spring water were samples on the foot of Tavurvur Volcano. C02 flux from ground surface were measured repeatedly around Simpson harbor in order to evaluate spacial distribution of the anomaly and monitor the magma activity. During our survey in 2002 and 2003, Tavurvur emitted ash with Vulcanian eruptions and small explosions that occurred frequently. Chemical analysis of water leachates of the ash was useful for remote monitoring of the volcano. Tsunami deposits caused by the 1994 eruptions were identified as sand layers or characteristic pumiceous sand layers sandwiched by tephras from both Vulcan and Tavurvur Volcanoes. The chronological studies of both tephra and tsunami deposits was done to reveal the tsunamigenic volcanic process in the 1994 eruption series.

The Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) is a 1600 km long, linear chain of volcanoes that trends in NE-SW direction across Cameroon, West Africa. CVL hosts numerous crater lakes that include notorious Lakes Nyos and Monoun for their gas disasters in 1986 and 1984. Scientific surveys after the disasters indicate that both lakes contain a huge amount of magmatic COィイD22ィエD2 in their bottom waters and are considered to have a high potential to explode again due to continuous supply of COィイD22ィエD2 through the lake bottom. Many soda springs occur along CVL.
The purposes of this study are two fold : To obtain the current physico-chemical situations of these gassy lakes, and to understand the geochemical features of CVL magmas. To this end, the following field and laboratory work was undertaken ; (1) determination of COィイD22ィエD2 profiles and isotopic compositions of rare gases dissloved in the lakes, (2) systematic sampling of soda springs along southern part of CVL to characterize their chemistry and rare gas isotopic compositions, and (3) systematic sampling of volcanic rocks and mantle xenoliths for their K-1r ages, chemical compositions and rare gas elemental/isotopic compositions.
The results are : (1) The COィイD22ィエD2 concentration in these lakes is steadily increasing, (2) The COィイD22ィエD2 originates from mantle, (3) Volcanism of CVL took place during Pleistocene-Holocene along the whole CVL, and (4) the upper mantle beneath CVL is geochemically heterogeneous with respect to (U+Th)/ィイD13ィエD1He rations with the highest ratio occurring at present ocean-continent boundary. The last interpretation is based on a clear observation that ィイD13ィエD1He/ィイD14ィエD1He ratios of phenocrysts and xenoliths from volcanic rocks of this region are definitely lower than those from the other regions.

The survey trip to Indonesia started from July 26 and ended on August 17 during which we conducted the following survey : (1) Bathymetric survey of Kawah Ijen ; (2) Water sampling at several depths ; (3) Measurements of dissolved gases at each depth ; (4) Sampling and temperature measurement of subaqueousmolten slfur pools ; (5) Volcanic gas sampling solfataric area near Ijen crater lake ; (6) Sampling water from river, fresh water lakes for hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratio measurements. The results obtained are ; Maximum depth is 165m, slightly shallower than the depth (200m) at the period of Dutch Colony. This is partly because of a lom lowering of the lake level and mainly due to *etrital sediments from the catchment area ; (2) We ere unsuccessful in positioning molten sulfur pools at the lake floor, probably because the fumarolic activity at the lake bottom has been decreasing and the size of the pool may be too small to catch ; (3) Sulfur dioxide gas in the lake water ranges from 34 to 45 ppm. however, hydrogen sulfide gas was not detected except for one surface water. This fact strongly suggests that sulfur dioxide/hydrogen sulfide ratio of the subaqueous fumarolic gase is round 0.7 ; (4) Polythionates in the water range from 700 to 800 ppm.
We invited Ms. Sri Smarti from Indonesia to Japan for training analytical technique of polythionates and visiting Kusatsu-Shirane Observatory and Hakone Volcano from September 30 to October 13.
