Abstract
Glacial cycles during the early Pleistocene are characterised by a dominant 41,000-year periodicity and amplitudes smaller than those of glacial cycles with ~100,000-year periodicity during the late Pleistocene. However, it remains unclear how the 41,000-year glacial cycles during the early Pleistocene respond to Earth’s astronomical forcings. Here we employ a three-dimensional ice-sheet model to simulate the glacial cycles at ~1.6–1.2 million years before present and analyse the phase angle of precession and obliquity at deglaciations. We show that each deglaciation occurs at every other precession minimum, and when obliquity is large. The lead-lag relationship between precession and obliquity controls the length of interglacial periods, the shape of the glacial cycle, and the glacial ice-sheet geometry. The large amplitudes of obliquity and eccentricity during this period helped to establish robust 41,000-year glacial cycles. This behaviour is explained by the threshold mechanism determined by ice-sheet size and astronomical forcings.

Abstract. Following the protocol of the fourth phase of the Paleoclimate
Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP4), we performed numerical experiments
targeting distinctive past time periods using the Model for
Interdisciplinary Research on Climate, Earth System version 2 for Long-term
simulations (MIROC-ES2L), which is an Earth system model. Setup and basic
performance of the experiments are presented. The Last Glacial Maximum was one of the most extreme climate states during
the Quaternary and conducting numerical modeling experiments of this period
has long been a challenge for the paleoclimate community. We conducted a
Last Glacial Maximum experiment with a long spin-up of nearly 9000 years.
Globally, there was reasonable agreement between the anomalies relative to the present day derived from model climatology and those derived from proxy data archives, while some regional discrepancies remained. By changing orbital and greenhouse gas forcings, we conducted experiments
for two interglacial periods: 6000 and 127 000 years before present. Model
anomalies relative to the present day were qualitatively consistent with
variations in solar forcing. However, anomalies in the model were smaller
than those derived from proxy data archives, suggesting that processes that
play a role in past interglacial climates remain lacking in this
state-of-the-art model. We conducted transient simulations from 850 to 1850 CE and from 1850
to 2014 CE. Cooling in the model indicated a clear response to huge volcanic
eruptions, consistent with paleo-proxy data. The contrast between cooling
during the Little Ice Age and warming during the 20th to 21st
centuries was represented well at the multidecadal timescale.

    Abstract

When planets receive insolation above a certain critical value called the runaway threshold, liquid surface water vaporizes completely, which forms the inner edge of the habitable zone. Because land planets can emit a large amount of radiation from the dry tropics, they have a higher runaway threshold than aqua planets do. Here we systematically investigated the runaway threshold for various surface water distributions using a three‐dimensional dynamic atmosphere model. The runaway threshold for the meridionally uniform surface water distribution increases from the typical value for the aqua planet regime (~130% S0) to one for the land planet regime (~155% S0) as the dry surface area increases, where S0 is the present Earth's insolation. Although this result is similar to the previous work considering zonally uniform surface water distributions, the runaway threshold for the land planet regime is quite low compared to that of the previous work. This is because a part of the tropical atmosphere is always wet for the meridionally uniform case. We also considered the surface water distributions determined by the Earth's, Mars's, and Venus's topographies. We found that their runaway thresholds are close to that for the meridionally uniform cases, and the amount of water at the boundary between an aqua planet regime and land planet regime is around 10% of the Earth's ocean. This clearly shows that the runaway threshold is not determined uniquely by the luminosity of the central star, but it has a wide range caused by the surface water distribution of the terrestrial water planet itself.

Abstract. The effect of aerosols is one of many uncertain factors in projections offuture climate. However, the behaviour of mineral dust aerosols (dust) can beinvestigated within the context of past climate change. The Last GlacialMaximum (LGM) is known to have had enhanced dust deposition in comparisonwith the present, especially over polar regions. Using the Model forInterdisciplinary Research on Climate Earth System Model (MIROC-ESM), weconducted a standard LGM experiment following the protocol of thePaleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project phase 3 and sensitivityexperiments. We imposed glaciogenic dust on the standard LGM experiment andinvestigated the impacts of glaciogenic dust and non-glaciogenic duston the LGM climate. Global mean radiative perturbations by glaciogenic andnon-glaciogenic dust were both negative, consistent with previous studies. However, glaciogenic dust behaved differently in specific regions; e.g. itresulted in less cooling over the polar regions. One of the major reasons forreduced cooling is the ageing of snow or ice, which results in albedoreduction via high dust deposition, especially near sources of highglaciogenic dust emission. Although the net radiative perturbations in thelee of high glaciogenic dust provenances are negative, warming by the ageing ofsnow overcomes this radiative perturbation in the Northern Hemisphere. Incontrast, the radiative perturbation due to high dust loading in thetroposphere acts to warm the surface in areas surrounding Antarctica, primarily via the longwave aerosol–cloud interaction of dust, and it islikely the result of the greenhouse effect attributable to the enhanced cloudfraction in the upper troposphere. Although our analysis focused mainly onthe results of experiments using the atmospheric part of the MIROC-ESM, wealso conducted full MIROC-ESM experiments for an initial examination of theeffect of glaciogenic dust on the oceanic general circulation module. Along-term trend of enhanced warming was observed in the Northern Hemispherewith increased glaciogenic dust; however, the level of warming aroundAntarctica remained almost unchanged, even after extended coupling with theocean.

We incorporate a subgrid snow cover parameterization, Subgrid SNOW Distribution (SSNOWD) model, into the land surface model MATSIRO. SSNOWD assumes the subgrid snow water equivalent depth distribution following the lognormal distribution function, and accounts for the subgrid snow physical processes. The 29-year simulation is conducted forced by the observation and reanalysis based meteorological data. The results are compared with satellite based observational dataset and the intra- and inter-annual snow cover fraction variations are validated. The effects of incorporating SSNOWD on hydrological properties are also evaluated. The results show that SSNOWD improves the intra- and inter-annual variability of snow cover area in Northern Hemisphere especially in the accumulation season and the effect of those changes in snow cover on the other land surface properties are not negligible.

The global distribution of sub-grid snow cover ratio was estimated using two satellite observation data in visible radiation band : EASE-Grid data which covered long term period but limited for a medium resolution, and MODIS data which was limited to the recent years but enabled for a high resolution. In a land surface model for climate studies, MATSIRO, snow cover ratio had been estimated by a simple function of snow water equivalent. That was replaced by a scheme of snow cover ratio (SSNOWD) where the physics of the sub-grid distribution of snow cover was considered. It resulted in the significant reductions in negative biases in accumulation season and in positive biases in eastern Siberia.
