This essay presents a critical perspective on the nature of what is referred to as “cultured meat” in the public sphere by revisiting the concept of meat in cultural practice. We propose a perspective that focuses on and further investigates whether cultured meat is meat, examining the interaction between the emergence of cellular agriculture technologies and cultural practices. First, we review the production processes of cellular agriculture for meat, comparing this to the processes used to produce conventional meat. Second, we discuss how meat has been embedded in cultural practices, focusing on meat-related activities, and propose that a whole-parts relationship is critical for constructing the meaning of meat in cultural contexts. Third, several key issues raised in the social debate on cultured meat are addressed within the whole-parts framework. Cultured meat requires a complete bottom-up process in producing objects, indicating that the concept of cultured meat is not necessarily aligned with the concept of existing meat, as previously suggested from the perspective of producing conventional meat. In this perspective, we proceed to further investigation the meaning of meat in cultural constructions, wherein the relationship between the whole body and meat as a part of it is important. Thus, cultured meat can be considered a nonmeat under the whole-parts framework for meat. This insight can provisionally and speculatively update some of the ethical, legal, and social issues of cultured meat as well as products based on cellular agriculture technologies.

Understanding the effectiveness of public funds to generate emerging topics will assist policy makers in promoting innovation. In the present study, we aim to clarify the effectiveness of grants to generate emerging topics in life sciences and medicine since 1991 with regard to Japanese researcher productivity and grants from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. To clarify how large grant amounts and which categories are more effective in generating emerging topics from both the PI and investment perspectives, we analyzed awarded PI publications containing emerging keywords (EKs; the elements of emerging topics) before and after funding. Our results demonstrated that, in terms of grant amounts, while PIs tended to generate more EKs with larger grants, the most effective investment from the perspective of investor side was found in the smallest amount range for each PI (less than 5 million JPY /year). Second, in terms of grant categories, we found that grant categories providing smaller amounts for diverse researchers without excellent past performance records were more effective from the investment perspective to generate EK. Our results suggest that offering smaller, widely dispersed grants rather than large, concentrated grants is more effective in promoting the generation of emerging topics in life science and medicine.

    Introduction

This study aims to clarify how the unnaturalness of cellular agricultural products can be familiarized to society, using the case of the Japanese public's receptivity to cultured meats. Perceived unnaturalness is a key factor in the rejection of emerging technologies. While past studies have examined the explanatory factors involved in the public acceptance of cultured meats, the relationships among multiple factors have not been fully examined. Cultured meats and cellular agricultural products have been positively evaluated because they can contribute to future food sustainability, so the trade-off between perceived unnaturalness and sustainability is a significant issue for the public.

    Method

This study uses a questionnaire survey with 2,000 Japanese respondents, which was conducted in 2019. Using a categorical data analysis approach, the strongest explanatory factors for receptivity were comprehensively searched among attitudes toward cultured meats, eating habits, demographics, and so on.

    Results and discussion

The results indicated that perceived unnaturalness showed a strong explanatory power for the rejection of cultured meats, but awareness of world famine problems increased acceptance of cultured meat, if the degree of the respondents' concern for unnaturalness was moderate. The perceived animacy of non-human life forms is also associated with acceptance of cultured meat, which may reflect Japanese cultural values. These results suggest multiple pathways to overcoming the disgust of new food technologies in the social implementation process.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine how attitudes toward the return of genomic research results vary internationally. METHODS: We analyzed the "Your DNA, Your Say" online survey of public perspectives on genomic data sharing including responses from 36,268 individuals across 22 low-, middle-, and high-income countries, and these were gathered in 15 languages. We analyzed how participants responded when asked whether return of results (RoR) would motivate their decision to donate DNA or health data. We examined variation across the study countries and compared the responses of participants from other countries with those from the United States, which has been the subject of the majority of research on return of genomic results to date. RESULTS: There was substantial variation in the extent to which respondents reported being influenced by RoR. However, only respondents from Russia were more influenced than those from the United States, and respondents from 20 countries had lower odds of being partially or wholly influenced than those from the United States. CONCLUSION: There is substantial international variation in the extent to which the RoR may motivate people's intent to donate DNA or health data. The United States may not be a clear indicator of global attitudes. Participants' preferences for return of genomic results globally should be considered.

BACKGROUND: Public trust is central to the collection of genomic and health data and the sustainability of genomic research. To merit trust, those involved in collecting and sharing data need to demonstrate they are trustworthy. However, it is unclear what measures are most likely to demonstrate this. METHODS: We analyse the 'Your DNA, Your Say' online survey of public perspectives on genomic data sharing including responses from 36,268 individuals across 22 low-, middle- and high-income countries, gathered in 15 languages. We examine how participants perceived the relative value of measures to demonstrate the trustworthiness of those using donated DNA and/or medical information. We examine between-country variation and present a consolidated ranking of measures. RESULTS: Providing transparent information about who will benefit from data access was the most important measure to increase trust, endorsed by more than 50% of participants across 20 of 22 countries. It was followed by the option to withdraw data and transparency about who is using data and why. Variation was found for the importance of measures, notably information about sanctions for misuse of data-endorsed by 5% in India but almost 60% in Japan. A clustering analysis suggests alignment between some countries in the assessment of specific measures, such as the UK and Canada, Spain and Mexico and Portugal and Brazil. China and Russia are less closely aligned with other countries in terms of the value of the measures presented. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the importance of transparency about data use and about the goals and potential benefits associated with data sharing, including to whom such benefits accrue. They show that members of the public value knowing what benefits accrue from the use of data. The study highlights the importance of locally sensitive measures to increase trust as genomic data sharing continues globally.

Analyzing genomic data across populations is central to understanding the role of genetic factors in health and disease. Successful data sharing relies on public support, which requires attention to whether people around the world are willing to donate their data that are then subsequently shared with others for research. However, studies of such public perceptions are geographically limited and do not enable comparison. This paper presents results from a very large public survey on attitudes toward genomic data sharing. Data from 36,268 individuals across 22 countries (gathered in 15 languages) are presented. In general, publics across the world do not appear to be aware of, nor familiar with, the concepts of DNA, genetics, and genomics. Willingness to donate one's DNA and health data for research is relatively low, and trust in the process of data's being shared with multiple users (e.g., doctors, researchers, governments) is also low. Participants were most willing to donate DNA or health information for research when the recipient was specified as a medical doctor and least willing to donate when the recipient was a for-profit researcher. Those who were familiar with genetics and who were trusting of the users asking for data were more likely to be willing to donate. However, less than half of participants trusted more than one potential user of data, although this varied across countries. Genetic information was not uniformly seen as different from other forms of health information, but there was an association between seeing genetic information as special in some way compared to other health data and increased willingness to donate. The global perspective provided by our "Your DNA, Your Say" study is valuable for informing the development of international policy and practice for sharing genomic data. It highlights that the research community not only needs to be worthy of trust by the public, but also urgent steps need to be taken to authentically communicate why genomic research is necessary and how data donation, and subsequent sharing, is integral to this.

This study investigated how people had managed to sustain an elaborate festival named the Hakata Gion Yamagasa (Yamagasa, for short) that has been conducted in the Hakata district, a part of a large city named Fukuoka, each summer since the thirteenth century. The researchers explored how a traditional cultural ritual such as this festival can be maintained when a geographic area has undergone depopulation. In the Yamagasa, seven floats make a five kilometer race, each of which weighs about one ton and is carried on the shoulders of 26 people who appear each minute from a group of several hundred participants. The festival had traditionally been conducted by residents living in the site called Hakata, but it became difficult to sustain because the population sharply decreased after the 1970s. In this study, observations and a questionnaire were carried out in one of the seven floats named the Doi float in 2009 to find out which people participated in the festival and where they came from. As a result, we found that only 20% of the participants were residents of the Hakata district while 80% came from the other districts of Fukuoka city and from the outside of the city. Thus the festival has evolved to belong to citizens of Fukuoka city rather than residents of the Hakata district. However, residents in the Hakata district were found to play a central role without which the Yamagasa would not be possible because they have continued to participate in the festival traditions that they have known since their childhood. The festival was acknowledged as an integral part of their lives, a way of maintaining solidarity in a changing world. At the same time, it was obvious that the festival would not be sustained without participation of those from outside of the Hakata district. These people were found to be attracted by the human relationships and the sense of achievement that could be gained through participating in the festival. More than a few people from the outside had the same important hierarchical positions as people from the inside enjoyed, and shared several roles for carrying the float with residents in the district. We analyzed when, why and what were the characteristics of people from the outside who started participating in the festival. Most of them were young adults, in their 20 to 30s who started participating several years ago after being encouraged to join either from their acquaintances or by their own volition. We propose that additional exploration should be undertaken to learn how the real taste of the festival can be transmitted to those living outside the district who have not formerly participated, and are interested in taking part and how they can be further attracted to this vibrant and colorful festival.

In modern times, there is a growing need for scientists' active participation in science communication. However, scientists' current attitudes toward science communication are unclear, despite the fact that scientists are one of the main actors of science communication. In order to consider the effective participation of scientists in science communication, a survey on scientists' attitude is necessary. To this end, an Internet-based questionnaire survey to researchers in life science fields was conducted in 2008, and 1255 respondents were obtained. The results show the attitudes concerning 1) motivation, 2) hurdle for participating in communication, and 3) way of promoting communication, between strongly active scientists and less strongly active scientists. From the result, we considered the issues of science communication in two aspects: infrastructure and variety of awareness. These are important factors for promoting science communication: infrastructure which makes opportunities for communication constantly without the need for a lot of preparation by scientists, and new communication tools and designs especially of scientists who have less positive view of science communication.

With the increase of public concern for children security, excessive expectations on a watch over system based on radio frequency identification (RFID) technology within the local community has recently been developed in Japan. This study aimed to discuss this situation from the viewpoint of "Fear of crime" and "Surveillance society" and examined the case of demonstration experiments of RFID technology for watching over children. While the number of deadly crime involving children has been decreasing, the fear of crime has been rapidly growing recently. Systems of information technology for watching children and enhancing security are expected to respond to social needs. An example of demonstration experiments conducted in an elementary school in Osaka city in 2006 is illustrated in this paper. We discuss the perspectives and problems of the watch over system using information technology in the community, considering the current information society as a surveillance society.

This study explored the information processing of individuals with high-risk behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. Behavioral changes due to healthcare issues have been explored; however, research on high-risk behavior groups remains scarce. Study 1 surveyed behaviors related to the COVID-19 pandemic and showed that respondents’ lifestyles had a strong association with risky behaviors. Study 2 prescreened respondents to clarify the high-risk behavior group’s information processing mechanisms, and showed that they were critical of the possibility of errors in official information. Communication with risk behavior group represented rebellious attitudes toward infection control actions was discussed.

This study of a Japanese laboratory organization in which researchers design artificial cells included field surveys, the observation of research meetings, and interviews with scientists and industrial collaborators. From the analysis of all ethnographic and interview data, I clarified how multiple types of cell models have been constructed in the scientific community. In addition, I clarified that industrialization influenced the integration of multiple models. Through international comparisons, I constructed a theoretical framework for understanding the characteristics of Japanese scientists’ design practices regarding artificial cells.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the variation of views on life beings among scientists who have engaged in the design of the artificial cell. Through the bibliographic survey and additional observation and interview survey, the feature of perceptions in domestic scientific community has been analyzed. While it was assumed that the two types of perception style in the design, one focuses on motion and appearance of the artificial cell and the other focuses on biological requirements, the case shows the views on the artificial cell are segmented according to the fragmentation of modelling of the cell. A few laboratories tried to integrate the frame of modelling.

The purpose of this research project is to clarify the role of external volunteers to recover the relationships of local residents and the main factors to recover the resident's sense in disaster area.
The Great East Japan Earthquake is considered as a wide area disaster. It needed a support not only from the South but also from the North. The Hirosaki city which our University is standing is located in the north of the stricken area. Universities have students and special knowledges. During our volunteer activities, we have heard lot of voices of the local survivors. They wanted to record the old memories. They were willing to know more about others' states and really wanted to be delivered their voices to the local government. Because of this, we did a research process to support volunteers' activity. The research is including life history interview, the survey of resident's sentiment, current situation, and the discovery of the regional resources and advantages.

The Society for Social Studies of Science研究大会で発表した。
