    Abstract

    The Ganymede Laser Altimeter (GALA) on the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission, is in charge of a comprehensive geodetic mapping of Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto on the basis of Laser range measurements. While multiple topographic profiles will be obtained for Europa and Callisto during flybys, GALA will provide a high-resolution global shape model of Ganymede while in orbit around this moon based on at least 600 million range measurements from altitudes of 500 km and 200 km above the surface. By measuring the diurnal tidal deformation of Ganymede, which crucially depends on the decoupling of the outer ice shell from the deeper interior by a liquid water ocean, GALA will obtain evidence for (or against) a subsurface ocean on Ganymede and will provide constraints on the ice shell thickness above the ocean. In combination with other instruments, it will characterize the morphology of surface units on Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto providing not only topography but also measurements of surface roughness on the scale of the laser footprint, i.e. at a scale of about 50 m from 500 km altitude, and albedo values at the laser wavelength of 1064 nm. GALA is a single-beam laser altimeter, operating at a nominal frequency of 30 Hz, with a capability of reaching up to 48 Hz. It uses a Nd:YAG laser to generate pulses with pulse lengths of 5.5 ± 2.5 ns. The return pulse is detected by an Avalanche Photo Diode (APD) with 100 MHz bandwidth and the signal is digitized at a sampling rate of 200 MHz providing range measurements with a sub-sample resolution of 0.1 m. Research institutes and industrial partners from Germany, Japan, Switzerland and Spain collaborated to build the instrument. JUICE, conducted under responsibility of the European Space Agency (ESA), was successfully launched in April 2023 and is scheduled for arrival at the Jupiter system in July 2031. The nominal science mission including multiple close flybys at Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, as well as the final Ganymede orbit phase will last from 2031 to 2035. In May 2023 GALA has completed its Near-Earth Commissioning, showing full functionality of all units. Here we summarize the scientific objectives, instrument design and implementation, performance, and operational aspects of GALA.

    Abstract

    Japanese asteroid explorer Hayabusa2 arrived at C-type asteroid 162,173 Ryugu in June 2018. The laser altimeter (LIDAR) onboard Hayabusa2 measured its own transmitted laser and returned pulse intensities from a Ryugu surface until November 2019. Because the Ryugu surface is extremely rough, topography dominates over the material properties in the conventional derivation of normal albedo. Thus, we developed a method to retrieve the normal albedo from the rough surface of a C-type asteroid at a LIDAR laser wavelength of 1.064 μm. The albedo map covering an equatorial band between – 40° and + 20° in latitude was created with 3˚-by-3˚ resolution using the intensity data obtained before the conjunction of the spacecraft with the Sun. The average of the normal albedo is 0.0405 $$\pm$$ 0.0027, whereas approximately half of the 3°-by-3° grids are between 0.04 and 0.045. The low and uniform normal albedo feature is common to other remote-sensing observations of Ryugu by visible and near-infrared cameras onboard Hayabusa2.

    Hayabusa2 at the asteroid Ryugu

    Asteroids fall to Earth in the form of meteorites, but these provide little information about their origins. The Japanese mission Hayabusa2 is designed to collect samples directly from the surface of an asteroid and return them to Earth for laboratory analysis. Three papers in this issue describe the Hayabusa2 team's study of the near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid 162173 Ryugu, at which the spacecraft arrived in June 2018 (see the Perspective by Wurm). Watanabe et al. measured the asteroid's mass, shape, and density, showing that it is a “rubble pile” of loose rocks, formed into a spinning-top shape during a prior period of rapid spin. They also identified suitable landing sites for sample collection. Kitazato et al. used near-infrared spectroscopy to find ubiquitous hydrated minerals on the surface and compared Ryugu with known types of carbonaceous meteorite. Sugita et al. describe Ryugu's geological features and surface colors and combined results from all three papers to constrain the asteroid's formation process. Ryugu probably formed by reaccumulation of rubble ejected by impact from a larger asteroid. These results provide necessary context to understand the samples collected by Hayabusa2, which are expected to arrive on Earth in December 2020.
