    Abstract

Photonuclear reactions of light nuclei below a mass of $$A=60$$ are planned to be studied experimentally and theoretically with the PANDORA (Photo-Absorption of Nuclei and Decay Observation for Reactions in Astrophysics) project. Two experimental methods, virtual photon excitation by proton scattering and real photo absorption by a high-brilliance $$\gamma $$-ray beam produced by laser Compton scattering, will be applied to measure the photoabsorption cross sections and decay branching ratio of each decay channel as a function of the photon energy. Several nuclear models, e.g. anti-symmetrized molecular dynamics, mean-field and beyond-mean-field models, a large-scale shell model, and ab initio models, will be employed to predict the photonuclear reactions. The uncertainty in the model predictions will be evaluated based on the discrepancies between the model predictions and experimental data. The data and predictions will be implemented in the general reaction calculation code, . The results will be applied to the simulation of the photo-disintegration process of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in inter-galactic propagation.

Uncertainty in neutron reaction rates after penetrating a 608mm-thick copper benchmark experiment performed by the FNS facility of JAEA was estimated based on two different kinds of the Total Monte Carlo methods under random sampling methodology. 500 random nuclear data files were generated for 63Cu by the T6 code system with perturbing underlying model parameters. In the first method, these files were used directly to yield processed library preserving all the correlations among different physical quantities. In the second method, the random files populated by T6 were used but the angular distribution data were kept fixed to the non-perturbed nominal ones. It was found that the two methods gave the same neutron reaction rate after the 608 mm penetration of a copper, however uncertainty of the second method was larger than that of the first method. It shows that the correlation between total cross section and angular distribution of elastic scattering at 0 degree, which stems from Wick’s inequality, affects uncertainty of the calculated neutron reaction rate. The result is consistent with the case of 28Si on deep penetration of thick concrete problem previously reported by the authors. It could be concluded that the uncertainty obtained by using the covariance files given in the ENDF-6 format may not give correct results for the uncertainty of neutron penetration calculation.

Photodisintegration is a main energy loss process of ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) nuclei in intergalactic space at the highest energies. Therefore, it is crucial to understand photodisintegration's systematic uncertainty to simulate the propagation of UHECR nuclei. In this work, we calculated the cross sections using the random phase approximation (RPA) of density functional theory (DFT), a microscopic nuclear model. We calculated the $E1$ strength of 29 nuclei using three different density functionals. We obtained the cross sections of photonuclear reactions, including photodisintegration, with the $E1$ strength. Then, we implemented the cross sections in a cosmic ray propagation code CRPropa. We found that the difference between the RPA calculations and TALYS in CRPropa in the energy spectrum can be more than the statistical uncertainty of UHECR energy spectrum assuming some astrophysical parameters. We also found that the difference of some astrophysical parameters obtained by a combined fit of UHECR energy spectrum and composition data can be more than the uncertainty of the data between the RPA calculations and TALYS assuming a phenomenological model of UHECR sources.

    <title>Abstract</title>
Mass number dependence of the nuclear radii is closely related to the nuclear matter properties. It is known that the most of nuclei exhibit some deformation. We discuss how the nuclear density profile is modified by the nuclear deformation to elucidate the enhancement mechanism of the nuclear radii through a systematic investigation of neutron-rich Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ti, Cr, and Fe isotopes. Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculations are performed in a three-dimensional Cartesian grid to describe the nuclear deformation in a non-empirical way. The role of the nuclear deformation on the nuclear density profiles is explored in comparison to calculations with spherical limit. We find correlations between the nuclear deformation and the internal nuclear density. The evolution of the nuclear radii appears to follow the core swelling mechanism recently proposed in spherical nuclei [Phys. Rev. C 101, 061301(R) (2020)], and the radius is further enhanced by the nuclear deformation. This study demands further theoretical and experimental investigations for the internal density.

We have performed a systematic calculation of low-lying dipole responses for even-even nuclei, up to zirconium isotopes including deformed nuclei within the fully self-consistent random phase approximation using the Skyrme interaction. We found the low-lying peaks in the dipole strength, so-called the pygmy dipole resonance (PDR), in every isotopic chain. The E1 strength of the PDR strongly depends on the position of the neutron Fermi level and shows a clear correlation with the occupation of the orbits with low orbital angular momenta (low-l). We also found a strong correlation between the neutron skin thickness and the pygmy dipole strength in the region where the neutron Fermi levels are located at low-l orbits.

The time-dependent mean-field theory has a long history in describing many-nucleon dynamics in nuclear physics, and is now widely applied to many-electron dynamics in atomic, molecular, and condensed matter physics. We present our recent studies in these fields, applying similar computational methods to both nuclear and electronic systems. In the linear response regime, we show calculations of the optical response of a medium mass nucleus and a fullerene molecule C-60. The applications in nonlinear regime are also briefly mentioned.

We undertake a systematic calculation on electric dipole responses of even-even nuclei for a wide mass region employing a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus RPA approach. For an easy implementation of the fully self-consistent calculation, the finite amplitude method which we have proposed recently is employed. We calculated dipole responses in Cartesian mesh representation, which can deal with deformed nuclei but does not include pairing correlation. The calculated results show reasonable agreement for heavy nuclei while the average excitation energy are underestimated for light nuclei. The systematic calculation have reached Nickel isotopes. We show a compilation of calculated peak energies of giant dipole resonances.

The electric dipole (E1) strength functions have been systematically<br />
calculated based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), using<br />
the finite amplitude method and the real-time approach to the TDDFT with<br />
    pairing correlations. The low-energy E1 strengths in neutron-rich isotopes show<br />
peculiar behaviors, such as sudden enhancement and reduction, as functions of<br />
the neutron numbers. They seem to be due to the interplay between the neutron<br />
shell effect and the deformation effect.

We carry out systematic investigation of electric dipole (E1) mode from light<br />
to heavy nuclei, using a new time-dependent mean field theory: the<br />
    Canonical-basis Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (Cb-TDHFB) theory. The<br />
Cb-TDHFB in the three-dimensional coordinate space representation can deal with<br />

In order to investigate many-body dynamics in nuclear excitations and reactions, we have developed a number of new theoretical/computational methodologies based on the (time-dependent) density functional theory; especially in the linear response calculation, the real-time calculation, and the large amplitude collective motion theory. We also improved the pairing energy functional for more reliable predictions. Utilizing these new techniques, we have performed systematic numerical analysis for stable and unstable nuclei, to study properties of exotic elementary modes of excitation in unstable nuclei with unbalanced numbers of neutron sand protons.
