    In post-industrial society, craft products such as handmade ceramics are often valued both for their distinct material qualities and for the cultural narratives embedded in their production. While craft theorists have acknowledged the interplay between these two dimensions, this study argues that analytically distinguishing between ‘qualities’ – the formal, tactile and decorative attributes of an object – and ‘narratives’ – the stories, traditions and identities associated with its making – can offer a productive framework for understanding and discussing craft. Discourse around handmade ceramic tableware frequently shifts between describing the sensory features of pots and evoking broader cultural contexts, yet these elements are often juxtaposed without a clear connection grounded in evidence. To address this gap, the study draws on extensive ethnographic fieldwork conducted in three established British pottery workshops: Leach Pottery in Cornwall, Ewenny Pottery in Wales and Maze Hill Pottery in London. Methods included participant observation, interviews, video analysis of making processes and experimental practice replicating the techniques observed. Through a text-to-code analysis of field notes and interviews, triangulated with hands-on experience and close study of finished wares, the research identifies how qualities and narratives are intertwined in both discourse and practice. By focusing on the production of the mug as a comparative typology across the three sites, the study reveals how cultural narratives, such as those relating to tradition, locality and individual style, are materially expressed in making techniques and qualities of the pots. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of this dual analytical framework and methodology, offering new insight into the diversity of approaches within contemporary British studio pottery.

    Abstract

    This paper discusses Hacking Hearts, a transdisciplinary educational collaboration between the art school Central Saint Martins (U.K.) and a science and engineering university, the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan). The concept of performativity—which was brought into the construction of the workshop setting—is used to explain the mechanisms of interaction across disciplinary boundaries commonly accepted in these institutions and academic areas. The collaboration transformed performative elements into a resource by creating an educational environment that enabled communication through encounters “on stage” between research scientists and art/design students. The discussion is situated within a growing literature on art/science education and offers lessons for establishing collaborative workshops between diverse participants.
