    Abstract

    Synchrotron X‐ray multiscale tomography is a three‐dimensional (3D) imaging method that combines microtomography and nanotomography to perform a high spatial resolution measurement with a wide field of view. We show how this method can be used to track the 3D microstructural evolution at multiple length scales in powder processing, sintering, and microfracture of ceramics. Heterogeneity, complexity, diversity, and hierarchical structure of powder compact lead to various types of defects that control the quality, reliability, and lifetime of products. The elimination and formation of defects are affected by applied stress in spark plasma sintering and by internal stresses generated during differential sintering and constrained sintering. The complex subsurface crack system induced by Vickers indentation demonstrates how heterogeneous microstructures control the toughening mechanisms.

    Abstract

    Contact damage in materials is critical in engineering applications because it influences mechanical resistance, such as wear, erosion, and impact failure. Indentation tests were performed using a tungsten carbide ball indenter (Hertzian contact) on the surfaces of glass–ceramics containing hexagonal CaAl2Si2O8 or mica crystals (fluorophlogopite), both of which have a layered structure. The stress–strain relation and the permanent deformation on the surface, as well as the observation of the microcrack zone by X‐ray computed tomography using synchrotron radiation, revealed that the glass–ceramic with hexagonal CaAl2Si2O8 showed ductility similar to the quasi‐plastic behavior previously observed in the mica glass–ceramic. The yield stresses of the glass–ceramics were estimated from the stress deviating from the stress–strain relation assuming complete elastic response between the ball and the sample. The ratio of the yield stress to Young modulus (Y/E) of the glass–ceramic with hexagonal CaAl2Si2O8 was determined to be higher than that of the mica glass–ceramic.

    The mechanical reliability of products must be assured for scaling up and production of complex‐shaped components by spark plasma sintering (SPS) of spray‐dried granules. The evolution of morphologies of pores and defects, which control the mechanical strength, is investigated by using synchrotron X‐ray multiscale tomography during SPS of alumina granules at 1300 °C. While large defects arising from the hierarchical granule packing structure cannot be removed by pressureless sintering, crack‐like defects and branched rodlike defects are almost eliminated by SPS at stresses higher than 30 and 50 MPa, respectively. But, small ellipsoidal porous regions, which may arise from aggregates or dimples of granules, cannot be removed even at a pressure of 50 MPa. A very large defect is also found by using micro‐CT. It is supposed that this defect is formed from a large void in loosely packed granules. The shrinkage of large voids and the elimination of crack‐like defects are explained by the theoretical prediction based on the continuum theory of sintering.

    Abstract

    The characterization of subsurface cracks induced by indentation is a challenge for understanding contact damage, impact, wear, erosion, and abrasion of brittle materials, because the crack pattern observable on the surface is only a part of the total crack system. Here we applied synchrotron X-ray multiscale tomography to observe the morphology of subsurface cracks produced by Vickers indentation in a novel CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 glass-ceramic with plate-like crystals forming a house-of-cards microstructure. It revealed a diverse type of crack systems around the semispherical microcrack zone beneath the indent, including a new mode II inclined lateral crack driven by the maximum shear stress. Tomography images provided knowledge on how the heterogeneous microstructure affected the toughening processes such as crack deflection, crack bridging, and microcracking.

    Abstract

    The characterization of the processing-induced defects is an essential step for developing defect-free processing, which is important to the assurance of structural reliability of brittle ceramics. The multiscale X-ray computed tomography, consisting of micro-CT as a wide-field and low-resolution system and nano-CT as a narrow-field and high-resolution system, is suitable for observing crack-like defects with small length and with very small crack opening displacement. Here we applied this powerful imaging tool in order to reveal the complicated three-dimensional morphology of defects evolved during sintering of alumina. The hierarchical packing structure of granules was the origin of several types of strength-limiting defects, which could not be eliminated due to the differential sintering of heterogeneous microstructures. This imaging technique of internal defects provides a link between the processing and the fracture strength for the development of structural materials.

    令和3年度は以下の成果を得た.
    1)放射光X線CTで不均質な微構造をもつガラスセラミックスのビッカースインデンテーション表面下亀裂の複雑な形態を調査した. マイクロCTでは複雑な亀裂系全体の構造を観察し, ナノCTでは亀裂の詳細な形状を明らかにした.
    2)モデル系として基板上のサブミクロン粒径の金属膜の拘束焼結における3次元異方的微構造形成をFIB-SEMナノトモグラフィーにより観察した. 2次元断面の平均切片長さによる解析手法では, 焼結中の複雑な気孔構造の異方的な微構造の進展を定量的に特徴付けることができた. 表面エネルギーテンソルによる3次元解析では, 平均切片長さによる解析結果と別の幾何学的特徴を捉えており, 組織の異方性を議論するにはさまざまな特性量を解析して総合的に判断する必要があることが明らかになった.
    3)焼結中のドメイン成長は, 粒子の接触により気孔チャネルが消失し,近隣粒子が結合することによって起こる. この際, 粒径は変わらないため, ドメイン成長と粒成長は似て非なる現象であることを示した. さらに, ドメイン成長は, 結晶粒の焼結だけでなくガラスの粘性焼結でも生じることを見出した.
    4)加圧焼結における粗大欠陥の変形を焼結の連続体力学によって解析し, アルミナのせん断粘性率, 体積粘性率, 焼結応力の実測値に基づき, 粗大気孔変形の予測に成功した.ホットプレスや通電加圧焼結では, 最初の段階で扁平であった空隙は焼結中に押しつぶされて,完全に緻密化する前に消失することがわかった.
