This paper presents a theoretical analysis and control of a three-phase modular multilevel cascade converter based on double-star chopper-cells (MMCC-DSCC). The analysis and control are characterized by applying the so-called "αβ0" and "dq0" coordinate transformations to the converter. Existing analysis and control methods were unable to use any coordinate transformation because the three-phase converter was considered as three sets of single-phase converters that were analyzed and controlled independently. As a result, it was difficult to avoid mutual interferences among the three-phase ac currents, circulating currents inside the converter, and dc current. Power-flow analysis using the two coordinate transformations succeeds in decoupling these currents, as well as in deriving lucid relationships between the power flow and the circulating currents. Moreover, the power-flow analysis makes it possible to design a decoupled digital controller for balancing and regulating the dc mean voltages of all the floating dc capacitors. The validity of the design is confirmed by computer simulation using a software package of PSCAD/EMTDC.

This paper presents a medium-voltage motor drive with a three-phase modular multilevel PWM inverter and focuses on its control method and operating performance. This motor drive is particularly suitable for fans, blowers, pumps, and compressors, in which the load torque is proportional to the square of the rotating speed. Particular attention is paid to the dc-capacitor voltage fluctuation of each chopper-cell because it may affect the voltage rating of the power switching devices used. This paper describes the theoretical equations related to the amount of the voltage fluctuation. A downscaled model rated at 400V and 15kW is designed and built to confirm the validity and effectiveness of the nine-level (17-level in line-to-line) PWM inverter that is intended for use in medium-voltage motor drives to achieve energy savings.

This paper presents a medium-voltage motor drive with a modular multilevel PWM inverter, and focuses on a startup method and its performance. It is formed by six modular arms, each of which consists of a cascaded stack of multiple bidirectional chopper-cells. The frequency of the dominant ac-voltage fluctuation is equal to the motor (inverter) frequency. These fluctuations occur in the dc capacitor of each chopper-cell, and the magnitude of the fluctuation is inversely proportional to the motor frequency. Because of the increased voltage fluctuation in low-frequency regions, the so-called "volt-per-hertz control" cannot be applied in motor starting. The startup method proposed in this paper is suitable for a motor drive with the modular multilevel PWM inverter. It enables the motor to produce a startup torque loaded on the motor at an initial amplitude and a fixed frequency of the inverter while taking into account constraints on the motor current and the ac-voltage fluctuation. The validity of the startup method as well as the startup performance is confirmed by experiment and simulation.

This paper deals with a transformerless hybrid active filter integrated into a medium-voltage three-phase diode rectifier used as the front end of an adjustable-speed motor drive. The hybrid filter is formed by a single LC filter tuned to the 7th-harmonic frequency per phase and a small-rated active filter based on a three-phase three-level diode-clamped PWM converter. A three-phase downscaled system rated at 400V and 15kW is designed, constructed, and tested to verify the filtering performance of the hybrid filter. Experimental results show that the current THD (total harmonic distortion) gets less than 5%, and that the voltage-balancing control proposed in this paper works properly even in transient states.

This paper deals with a 50-MW self-commutated BTB (Back-To-Back) system intended for power-flow control between transmission networks. It focuses on the dynamic behavior of the BTB system during single-line-to-ground (SLG) faults. During an SLG fault, a dc magnetic deviation appears in the converter-transformers used for the BTB system just after the occurrence and restoration of the fault. It is indispensable to understand an amount of deviation because it may bring magnetic saturation as well as a large amount of magnetizing current to the transformers. This paper derives theoretical equations related to the deviation during the SLG fault. The theoretical analysis developed in this paper would make significant contributions to designing the transformers.

This paper deals with a 6.6-kV transformerless STATCOM cascading multiple single-phase H-bridge PWM converters in each phase. The ac voltage of the STATCOM is almost sinusoidal, so that it requires no harmonic filter. Each converter is equipped with a capacitor and a voltage sensor on the dc side, which are electrically isolated from each other. The STATCOM has the capability of self-starting and voltage-balancing without any external power supply or equipment. Experiment by a three-phase 200-V, 10-kVA laboratry system, along with computer simulation, is carried out to confirm the viability and effectiveness of the STATCOM.

This paper discusses a 6.6-kV transformerless STATCOM intended for installation on industrial and utility distribution systems in the near future. In addition, this paper provides experimental results obtained from a laboratory model rated at 200V and 10kVA. The authors propose such a control method as to superimpose a 6th-harmonic zero-sequence component on each of three-phase voltage references. This helps to stabilize the voltage of the inner midpoint in the dc link. As a result, the laboratory model installs two bi-directional buck-boost choppers on the dc link for the porpose of stabilizing the voltages of two outer midpoints. Experimental results obtained from the laboratory model verify the validity of the system design, giving promise of the viability of the 6.6-kV transformerless STATCOM.

This paper proposes a new suppression method of magnetic-flux deviation in series transformers used in a dynamic voltage restorer. A dc flux as well as an ac flux appears in the series transformers at the beginning of voltage-sag compensation. Since an amount of dc flux depends on a phase angle of the source voltage at the beginning of compensation, the sum of an ac flux and a dc flux may reach twice the rated flux. Therefore, the cross section of a series-transformer core should be designed twice as large as that of a generally-designed transformer, in order to avoid flux saturation. The proposed method to eliminate dc flux from the series transformer makes the compensating voltage zero for a short duration. As a result, only an ac flux appears in the series transformer, thus allowing us to use a generally-designed transformer. Experimental results obtained from a 200-V, 5-kW laboratory system are shown to verify the viability of the proposed method.

The authors have already proposed a passive EMI filter that does require access to the motor-neutral point. The EMI filter has been applied to an induction motor driven by a voltage-source PWM inverter with a three-phase diode rectifier used as the front end. Experimental results have shown that the EMI filter can mitigate leakage currents flowing out of the motor and the heat sink, as well as bearing currents circulating inside the motor. This paper deals with a passive EMI filter for preventing high-frequency leakage currents from flowing through the heat sink of a voltage-source PWM inverter together with a voltage-source PWM rectifier used as the front end. Both rectifier and inverter have the same carrier frequency as 14kHz. The tested motor equipped with the motor-neutral line is an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPM-SM) rated at 190V, 5.5kW, 6 poles and 1,800rpm. This paper designs, constructs and tests two types of EMI filters. These filters consist mainly of two 10-mH identical common-mode inductors that are installed on the ac sides of the rectifier and the inverter, respectively. However, the two filters are slightly different in that one accesses to the dc-link mid-point, and the other does not access to it. Experimental waveforms verify that the former is superior to the latter in eliminating the high-frequency leakage currents from both the heat sink and the motor.

This paper describes a bi-directional isolated dc/dc converter considered as a core circuit of 3.3-kV/6.6-kV high-power-density power conversion systems in the next generation. The dc/dc converter is intended to use power switching devices based on SiC and/or GaN, which will be available on the market in the near future. A 350-V, 10-kW and 20kHz dc/dc converter is designed, constructed and tested in this paper. It consists of two single-phase full-bridge converters with the latest trench-gate Si-IGBTs and a 20-kHz transformer with a nano-crystalline soft-magnetic material core and litz wires. The transformer plays an essential role in achieving galvanic isolation between the two full-bridge converters. The overall efficiency from the dc-input to dc-output terminals is accurately measured to be as high as 97%, excluding gate drive circuit and control circuit losses from the whole loss. Moreover, loss analysis is carried out to estimate effectiveness in using SiC-based power switching devices. The loss analysis clarifies that the use of SiC-based power devices may bring a significant reduction in conducting and switching losses to the dc/dc converter. As a result, the overall efficiency may reach 99% or higher.

This paper deals with the dynamic behavior of a 21-level (line-to-line) BTB system based on series connection of sixteen converter-cells under a single-line-to-ground fault condition. A laboratory system rated at 200V and 20 kW was designed and built up to confirm the validity of the system. Experimental results obtained from the system lead to the following conclusions: i) The BTB system has a capability of reducing both negative-sequence voltage and current appearing during the fault. ii) A dc-capacitor voltage regulator that has been already developed by the authors makes it possible to suppress the dc-voltage fluctuation sufficiently. iii) Flux fluctuations in transformers used for the system strongly depend on a voltage depth during the fault. These would make a significant contribution to putting the BTB system into practical use.

This paper deals with a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) characterized by installing the shunt converter at the load side. The DVR can compensate for the load voltage when a voltage sag appears in the supply voltage. An existing DVR requires a large capacitor bank or other energy-storage elements such as double-layer capacitors or batteries. The DVR presented in this paper requires only a small dc capacitor intended for smoothing the dc-link voltage. Moreover, three control methods for the series converter are compared and discussed to reduce the series-converter rating, paying attention to the zero-sequence voltages included in the supply voltage and the compensating voltage. Experimental results obtained from a 200-V, 5-kW laboratory system are shown to verify the viability of the system configuration and the control methods.

The so-called three level inverters have been widely used for industry applications because of high-voltage output ability and low harmonic contents. These applications are mainly suitable for ac motor drives. Nowadays, attention has been paid to larger-capacity inverters applicable to power system control. This paper describes their applications to power systems. First, harmonic analysis of a three-level inverter is achieved under the condition that its two dc capacitor voltages are unbalanced. Second, a control method for balancing the two dc capacitor voltages is described. Finally, applications of single-phase three-level inverters to STATCOM and BTB are introduced. Their control performance is confirmed by computer simulation.

This paper proposes a novel power converter without any switching operation, which works as a linear amplifier. The main circuit of the proposed converter consists of twelve MOSFETs connected in series, 12 dc power supplies and clamp diodes like a diode-clamped multi-level inverter circuit. Two MOSFETs of 12 series MOSFETs are used at saturating state just like a linear amplifier, while the other MOSFETs operates at on or off state like an inverter circuit. As a result, the proposed converter circuit achieves an acceptable efficiency as high as 90% without any switching operation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed converter has capability of driving a three-phase induction motor rated at 2.2 kW.

This paper deals with a new control method of pulse density modulation suitable for generating atmospheric-pressure discharge plasma. The plasma generator in this paper consists of voltage-source inverter, step-up transformer, resonant inductor, and parallel electrode plates. This plasma generator is characterized by generating a high voltage using series resonance between the capacitance of the plates and the resonant inductance. However, a plasma generator requires zero-current interval to reduce streamer discharge. This paper proposes a new control scheme based on pulse density modulation (PDM). The PDM inverter repeats alternate run and stop to adjust the average output voltage. The new control scheme has capability of quickly decreasing the discharge current during the interval, compared with a conventional PDM scheme. As a result, the new scheme makes it possible to eliminate the streamer discharge, leading to a stable plasma generation and processing. Experimental results are shown to verify viability of the proposed PDM scheme.

This paper deals with a self-commutated BTB (Back-To-Back) system for the purpose of power flow control and/or frequency change in transmission systems. Each BTB unit consists of two sets of 16 three-phase voltage-source converters, and their ac terminals are connected in series each other via 16 three-phase trans-formers. Hence, the BTB unit uses totally 192 switching devices capable of achieving gate commutation. This results in a great reduction of voltage and current harmonics without performing PWM control. Simulation results verify the validity of the proposed system configuration and control scheme not only under a normal operating condition but also under a single-line-to-ground fault condition.

This paper discusses a distributed constant circuit model of power cables for representing high-frequency oscillatory currents, and evaluates electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by a PWM inverter-fed induction motor drive system. While the lumped constant circuit model which has already been proposed by the authors has only one resonant frequency, the distributed model proposed here can simulate plural resonant phenomena existing in a high frequency range over the first resonant frequency. Frequency characteristics of both common-mode and normal-mode currents are analyzed by using a circuit simulator with the distributed model. As a result, it is shown experimentally and theoretically that the resonant phenomena in the high frequency range are originated from behavior of the power cables as the distributed constant circuit, and that the common-mode transformer (CMT) and the normal-mode filters (NMF's) can damp the resonances.

This paper proposes a hybrid active filter for damping of harmonic resonance in industrial power systems. The hybrid active filter consists of a small-rated active filter and a 5th-turned passive filter. The active filter is controlled to behave as a variable resistor by adjusting a feedback gain which changes from a negative to positive value. The negative resistance cancels a positive resistor inherent in the passive filter, so that the hybrid active filter acts as an ideal passive filter with infinite quality factor. This results in a significant improvement of harmonic damping accompanied by harmonic mitigation, compared with the passive filter used alone. Moreover, the active filter acts as a positive resistor to prevent an excessive harmonic current from flowing into the passive filter. Experimental results obtained from a 20-kW laboratory model verify the viability and effectiveness of the hybrid active filter proposed in this paper.

This paper deals with an estimated error occurring in position estimation of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPM motor) based on magnetic saliency, which has been proposed by the authors. The proposed method has capable of estimating the rotor position from the harmonic armature currents generated by switching operation of a voltage-source PWM inverter. Therefore, the estimated error occurs due to various factors that affect the armature currents. This paper analyzes the estimated error caused by the following factors : 1) resolution of A/D converters ; 2) saliency; 3) switching frequency ; 4) gain error in a current detection circuit ; 5) dead-time; 6) eddy current; 7) space harmonic in the motor.

This paper discusses the potential of applying the soft-switching technique to a dc voltage-controlled static var compensator. The main circuit of the static var compensator (SVC) consists of quad-series voltage-source six-step inverters and four three-phase transformers. The SVC is characterized by a "commutation capacitor" connected in parallel with each switching device, without any additional active or passive element. The commutation capacitor plays an essential role in achieving soft-switching.Experimental results obtained from a small-rated laboratory model of 10kVA verify the operating principle and effectiveness of the soft-switched SVC proposed in this paper. The zero-voltage-switching enables to reduce dv/dt across each switching device, thus resulting in reduced EMI and switching losses.

A voltage-source PWM inverter produces common-mode and normal-mode currents flowing through stray capacitors inside an ac motor every switching. Therefore, the currents may cause radiational EMI to electronic equipment, e.g., AM radio receivers, because its oscillation frequency ranges from 100kHz to several MHz. However, few technical papers related to the radiational EMI have been reported although attention has paid to the EMI.This paper discusses relationships between radiational electromagnetic noises and the commom-mode and normal-mode currents. Reduction methods of both the commom-mode and normal-mode currents are also discussed on the basis of a motor model including the stray capacitors. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that both the currents can be damped by the combination of the common-mode transformer which has already been proposed by the authors and normal-mode filters proposed in this paper. Radiational EMI of a vector-controlled induction motor drive system of 3.7kW is measured according to the VDE 0877. Experimental results show not only that the radiational EMI results from the high-frequency oscillatory currents, i.e., the common-mode and normal-mode currents, but also that the combination of the common-mode transformer and the normal-mode filters is an effective, practical way of reducing the EMI.

The guidelines for harmonic mitigation, announced on Oct. 3, 1994, are currently applied on a voluntary basis to control harmonic levels and promote better practices in both power systems and equipment design. In general, individual high-power consumers and low-power end-users are responsible for limiting current distortion produced by power electronics equipment, while electric power companies or utilities are responsible for limiting voltage distortion at the point of common coupling in distribution systems. The purpose of conventional shunt active filters, which have already been installed in the vicinity of one or more harmonic producing loads, is to compensate for harmonic currents caused by the identified loads. This paper deals with control strategy and site selection of a shunt active filter which will be installed on a power distribution system by electric power companies. The major objective of the shunt active filter discussed is to damp, harmonic resonance between many capacitors for power factor improvement and line inductors in the distribution system, rather than to mitigate voltage distortion. This paper also proposes a basic concept of the best point of installation of the shunt active filter. Simulated results are shown to verifly the validity and effectiveness of the concept. The computer simulation developed in this paper is characterized by the use of a model for a virtual distribution system of a residential area.
