    Optimal and safety-critical control are fundamental problems for stochastic systems, and are widely considered in real-world scenarios such as robotic manipulation and autonomous driving. In this paper, we consider the problem of efficiently finding optimal and safe control for high-dimensional systems. Specifically, we propose to use dimensionality reduction techniques from a comparison theorem for stochastic differential equations together with a generalizable physics-informed neural network to estimate the optimal value function and the safety probability of the system. The proposed framework results in substantial sample efficiency improvement compared to existing methods. We further develop an autoencoder-like neural network to automatically identify the low-dimensional features in the system to enhance the ease of design for system integration. We also provide experiments and quantitative analysis to validate the efficacy of the proposed method. Source code is available at https://github.com/jacobwang925/path-integral-PINN.

    This work applies real-time nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) to fault-tolerant control problems of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with failed rotors. In the control problem, a hexacopter with up to three failed rotors out of the six available rotors is considered. The NMPC approach includes a quaternion-based nonlinear model of the hexacopter as well as constraints in the thrusts to consider the inherent nonlinearities of UAVs. The proposed method aims to achieve real-time optimization of the NMPC in the on-board computers without any linearization. We explore all possible scenarios in up to three rotor failures and demonstrate control designs in the NMPC for these scenarios. The simulation results indicate that by using the quaternion model, the position and attitude of a hexacopter can be controlled from a large inclined initial state with a non-zero angular velocity and falling velocity. Moreover, the results reveal that the quaternion model is superior to the Euler angle model in terms of the computation time. We also conduct hardware experiments using an actual hexacopter with a failed rotor to demonstrate the real-time NMPC optimization. The results of the simulations and hardware experiments demonstrate that the NMPC can deal with various operation conditions of a hexacopter in a unified manner, with only minor modifications in the performance index.

    In this study, we consider the stabilization problem of discrete-time Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems by using dynamic output feedback laws. For the design of dynamic output feedback laws, we derive a design condition as linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). To relax the conservatism that might appear in LMI conditions, we employ a descriptor expression of the closed-loop systems. Based on the results of C. Briat (2014), we obtain LMI conditions for designing dynamic output feedback laws.

    The aim of this paper is to present a stochastic extremum-seeking algorithm for one-dimensional and multivariate optimization of static systems. Extremum-seeking algorithms estimate the optimum value of a function using perturbation signals. The authors propose three schemes (a basic scheme, an annealing parameter scheme, and a high-pass filter scheme) for the one-parameter problem and one scheme (a high-pass filter scheme) for the multivariate problem. These methods employ Wiener processes for the perturbation signals. In this paper, the proposed methods are shown to converge by means of a stability analysis of stochastic systems. The paper presents some numerical examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods.

    We study the reinforcement learning (RL) problem in a constrained Markov
    decision process (CMDP), where an agent explores the environment to maximize
    the expected cumulative reward while satisfying a single constraint on the
    expected total utility value in every episode. While this problem is well
    understood in the tabular setting, theoretical results for function
    approximation remain scarce. This paper closes the gap by proposing an RL
    algorithm for linear CMDPs that achieves $\tilde{\mathcal{O } }(\sqrt{K})$ regret
    with an episode-wise zero-violation guarantee. Furthermore, our method is
    computationally efficient, scaling polynomially with problem-dependent
    parameters while remaining independent of the state space size. Our results
    significantly improve upon recent linear CMDP algorithms, which either violate
    the constraint or incur exponential computational costs.

  • Nonlinear receding-horizon differential game for drone racing along a three-dimensional path

    Drone racing involves high-speed navigation of three-dimensional paths,
    posing a substantial challenge in control engineering. This study presents a
    game-theoretic control framework, the nonlinear receding-horizon differential
    game (NRHDG), designed for competitive drone racing. NRHDG enhances robustness
    in adversarial settings by predicting and countering an opponent's worst-case
    behavior in real time. It extends standard nonlinear model predictive control
    (NMPC), which otherwise assumes a fixed opponent model. First, we develop a
    novel path-following formulation based on projection point dynamics,
    eliminating the need for costly distance minimization. Second, we propose a
    potential function that allows each drone to switch between overtaking and
    obstructing maneuvers based on real-time race situations. Third, we establish a
    new performance metric to evaluate NRHDG with NMPC under race scenarios.
    Simulation results demonstrate that NRHDG outperforms NMPC in terms of both
    overtaking efficiency and obstructing capabilities.

    This paper presents a safe controller synthesis of discrete-time stochastic
    systems using Control Barrier Functions (CBFs). The proposed condition allows
    the design of a safe controller synthesis that ensures system safety while
    avoiding the conservative bounds of safe probabilities. In particular, this
    study focuses on the design of CBFs that provide flexibility in the choice of
    functions to obtain tighter bounds on the safe probabilities. Numerical
    examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

    Designing a safe policy for uncertain environments is crucial in real-world
    control systems. However, this challenge remains inadequately addressed within
    the Markov decision process (MDP) framework. This paper presents the first
    algorithm guaranteed to identify a near-optimal policy in a robust constrained
    MDP (RCMDP), where an optimal policy minimizes cumulative cost while satisfying
    constraints in the worst-case scenario across a set of environments. We first
    prove that the conventional policy gradient approach to the Lagrangian max-min
    formulation can become trapped in suboptimal solutions. This occurs when its
    inner minimization encounters a sum of conflicting gradients from the objective
    and constraint functions. To address this, we leverage the epigraph form of the
    RCMDP problem, which resolves the conflict by selecting a single gradient from
    either the objective or the constraints. Building on the epigraph form, we
    propose a bisection search algorithm with a policy gradient subroutine and
    prove that it identifies an $\varepsilon$-optimal policy in an RCMDP with
    $\tilde{\mathcal{O } }(\varepsilon^{-4})$ robust policy evaluations.

    Abstract

    In recent years, car-sharing services have become a form of mobility-as-a-service (MaaS). These services and their demand are likely to increase owing to their high convenience to users. Nevertheless, the current one-way car-sharing service raises significant challenges to the operator, the most pertinent of which is the uneven distribution of vehicles. A straightforward solution for this problem is the relocation or rebalancing of vehicles by the operator; however, reducing the labor cost of vehicle relocation is a difficult optimization problem, which has attracted considerable research attention. The present study addresses this issue by applying system control approaches, including dynamic pricing, to common decentralized policy, sparse optimal control, a consensus-based primal-dual method with event-triggered communication, optimal control of probability distribution, and a DC program. This chapter reports on the study illustrating that system control approaches are promising for mobility innovation.

    <p>In this paper, we discuss the stability of stochastic homogeneous systems. Regarding the stability, we show that the homogeneity is strongly related to their convergence rates with respect to homogeneous norms. Based on the stability result, we deal with the stabilization of homogeneous control systems with guaranteed convergence rates. For the purpose of the guaranteed convergence rates, we show a design method of homogeneous stabilizing control laws. We also show numerical examples of the homogeneous stabilization.</p>

    In this paper, we show a convergence analysis of extremum seeking control, which is a real-time optimization method for adaptive control, for static systems based on Lyapunov-like analysis. The scheme shown in this paper incorporates an additional element into a conventional extremum seeking scheme, and this enables to guarantee the global convergence of a parameter to an optimal value under some conditions. In this paper, we show conditions of parameters in the extremum seeking to guarantee the global convergence. A numerical result is also shown in this paper.

    本研究は,制御理論に基づき,確率システムが持つ分布のダイナミクスの性質を明らかにすることを目的としている.その背景には,確定的な場合とは異なり,確率的な動的システムにはその確率的な不確かさを解析したり,制御したりするための手法が十分には開発されていないことがある.このような目的のもと,本年度は以下のような研究を行った.
    一つ目の成果としては,確率システムの確率分布の時間変化について,所望の挙動を可能な限り実現する制御手法を確立したことである.具体的には,最適輸送理論に基づいた制御手法や,Wasserstein距離と呼ばれる確率分布間の距離を考えた最適制御問題の定式化と最適性条件を示した.さらに,後者については数値計算手法も示した.これにより,ガウス分布などの基本的な分布を仮定する標準的な問題設定よりも多様なクラスの確率分布を考慮した制御ができるようになる.また,得られた制御手法と機械学習のある手法との関連性を見出すことができ,応用につながる成果が得られた.
    また,もう一つの成果としては,漸近安定性,漸近安定化問題に関する結果が挙げられる.確率有限時間整定と呼ばれる問題において,確率分布の動特性を解析するための基礎として,密度関数と呼ばれる関数を用いた安定性解析の研究を行った.従来,確率システムの安定性や安定化において,リャプノフ安定論と呼ばれる理論に基づいて安定性を解析することが一般的であったが,確率システムについては,過渡的な挙動で生じる確率的な変動を考慮することが難しい.特に,有限時間整定問題では,整定時間が小さくなることが望ましいが,整定時間が確率変数となるため,その確率分布を解析することが望まれている.本年度に得られた結果は,そのような解析を可能にするための基礎となる結果である.また,確率システムの漸近的な挙動として,有界性についても研究を行い,その条件を示した.

    Many technologies for the realization of super-smart society are generally influenced by irregular noises and vibrations. The aim of this study was to construct a stochastic stability theory for analyzing and controlling stochastic nonlinear systems, especially achieving the elimination and attenuation for irregular system noises in a practical view point. In this study, we analyzed various singular properties of stability for nonlinear stochastic systems, and then tried developing nonlinear stochastic robust control easily applied to practical systems. The validity of the proposed methods was confirmed by numerical simulation and some experimental results.

    This project has developed finite-time stabilization methods based on the homogeneity of dynamical systems, and their extensions to stochastic dynamical systems. The aim of this project is to develop flexible design methods of finite-time stable systems for a wider class of systems. The project provided a design of finite-time stabilizing controllers for a class of driftless systems with the homogeneity. Moreover, it provided an extension of the homogeneity to stochastic systems, which are described by stochastic differential equations. As a result, the extension leads to the finite-time stabilization of the stochastic systems. It provided a flexible design of finite-time stabilizing controllers for a class of nonlinear systems.
