    This paper presents a fuel-efficient interval management algorithm called semi-continuous descent operation (semi-CDO) to support air traffic controllers in issuing altitude and velocity instructions to arriving aircraft to ensure proper separation. The control logic of semi-CDO is stated as an optimization problem of minimizing the fuel consumption of the descending trajectory based on the prediction model under the separation constraints. Numerical experiments simulating the arrival traffic at Kansai International Airport in Japan were performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The results showed that semi-CDO achieves the fuel-efficient descent for multiple arrival aircraft while maintaining proper separation between them.

    In this letter, we address the design of personalized control systems, which pursue an individual and private objective defined for each user. To this end, a problem of policy update is formulated where an individual objective function is estimated and the corresponding optimal control law is updated. The novelty of the problem setting is in the presence of a system-user and the policy update driven by his/her rating. The system-user rates on the control system to be updated and the rating is used for estimating his/her objective function. It is assumed that the rating depends not only on his/her private objective but also on his/her trust on the control system. Then, we address the problem of the policy update improving the rating while not impairing the trust. Algorithms of the policy update, which is essentially the objective function estimation, are developed and their convergence analysis is presented. Finally, through a numerical experiment, the effectiveness of the algorithms is shown.

    In this article, we develop a modular design method of decentralized controllers for linear dynamical network systems, where multiple subcontroller designers aim at individually regulating their local control performance with accessibility only to their respective subsystem models. First, we derive a constrained version of the Youla parameterization that characterizes all retrofit controllers for a single subcontroller, defined as an add-on-type subcontroller that manages a subsystem. The resultant feedback system is kept robustly stable for any variation in the neighboring subsystems, other than the subsystem of interest, provided that the original system is stable prior to implementing the retrofit control. Subsequently, we find out a unique internal structure of the retrofit controllers, assuming that the interaction input signal from the neighboring subsystems is measurable. Furthermore, we show that the simultaneous implementation of multiple retrofit controllers, designed by individual subcontroller designers, can improve the upper bound of the overall control performance. Finally, the practical significance of the method is demonstrated via an illustrative example of frequency regulation using the IEEE 68-bus power system model.

    In this paper, we address the data-driven modeling of a nonlinear dynamical system while incorporating a priori information. The nonlinear system is described using the Koopman operator, which is a linear operator defined on a lifted infinite-dimensional state-space. Assuming that the L2 gain of the system is known, the data-driven finite-dimensional approximation of the operator while preserving information about the gain, namely L2 gain-preserving data-driven modeling, is formulated. Then, its computationally efficient solution method is presented. An application of the modeling method to feedback controller design is also presented. Aiming for robust stabilization using data-driven control under a poor training dataset, we address the following two modeling problems: (1) Forward modeling: The data-driven modeling is applied to the operating data of a plant system to derive the plant model; (2) Backward modeling: L2 gain-preserving data-driven modeling is applied to the same data to derive an inverse model of the plant system. Then, a feedback controller composed of the plant and inverse models is created based on internal model control, and it robustly stabilizes the plant system. A design demonstration of the data-driven controller is provided using a numerical experiment.

    We propose a new method for enhancing resiliency of power systems integrated with renewable power resources. In the proposed method, we design a resilience enhancer that shapes reference values, generated by existing any power flow computation scheme such as EDC, so that the influence of faults on power system dynamics can be appropriately mitigated. The design of the resilience enhancer is based on so-called gray-box modeling, which is a fusion of a few prior knowledge on the grid and data acquired in its healthy operation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated through a three-machine system integrated with three solar farms.

    Predictive control encompasses a family of controllers that continually replan the system inputs during a certain time horizon to optimize their expected evolution according to a given criterion. This methodology has among its current challenges the adaptation to the paradigm of the so-called cyber-physical systems, which are composed of computers, sensors, actuators and physical entities of various kinds, including robots and even human beings who exchange information to control physical processes. This tutorial introduces the core concepts for the application of predictive control to cyber-physical systems by reviewing a series of examples that exploit the versatility of this design framework so as to solve the challenges presented by 21st century applications.

    Model predictive control (MPC) is one of the methods which optimizes the trajectory of the system with the constraints from predicted states of the system. A number of researches have studied its applications, for example, online optimization methods and fast solvers for nonlinear systems, because of its effectiveness. We propose one of the methods to apply online MPC to nonlinear systems based on instant MPC (iMPC). We recast iterative learning MPC (ILMPC) for nonlinear systems as iMPC via the primal-dual gradient algorithm, which we name "i-ILMPC". Finally, a numerical simulation is performed to demonstrate its effectiveness.

    This paper addresses a learning problem for nonlinear dynamical systems with incorporating any specified dissipativity property. The nonlinear systems are described by the Koopman operator, which is a linear operator defined on the infinite-dimensional lifted state space. The problem of learning the Koopman operator under specified quadratic dissipativity constraints is formulated and addressed. The learning problem is in a class of the non-convex optimization problem due to nonlinear constraints and is numerically intractable. By applying the change of variable technique and the convex overbounding approximation, the problem is reduced to sequential convex optimization and is solved in a numerically efficient manner. Finally, a numerical simulation is given, where high modeling accuracy achieved by the proposed approach including the specified dissipativity is demonstrated.

    Distributed optimal control has emerged as an exciting possibility; however, existing algorithms tend to require excessive computational time and thus may not be able to stabilize systems with fast dynamics. We develop instant distributed model predictive control (iDMPC) with a realization of the primal-dual algorithm embedded in the controller dynamics. Under assumptions on fast communication, we show that the input and state trajectories of iDMPC are equivalent to a centralized suboptimal MPC scheme. We utilize a dissipativity analysis to show that the closed-loop system trajectories asymptotically converge to a desired reference.

    This paper is devoted to a consumer-preferred community-level energy management system (CEMS), in which a system manager allows consumers their selfish decisions of power-saving while regulating the overall demand-supply imbalance. The key structure of the system is to weakly control consumers: the controller sends the allowable range of the power-saving amount to each consumer, which is modeled by a set-valued control signal. Then, the consumers decide the amount in the range based on their private preference. In this paper, we address the design problem of the controller that generates the set-valued control signals. The controller structure is based on internal model control, which plays the essential role of guaranteeing the consumer-independent stability and the worst-case control performance of the overall CEMS. Finally, a numerical experiment of the consumer-preferred CEMS is performed to demonstrate the design procedure of the controller and to show its effectiveness.

    © 2020 IEEE. We present a new optimal power flow (OPF) design that not only optimizes fuel cost but also enhances dynamic performance of a power system. Performance is quantified by the H2-norm of the transfer matrix from any disturbance input to a set of performance outputs, which in this case are chosen as the frequencies of the generators. The H2-norm models the attenuation of the frequency amplitudes following the disturbance, and thereby quantifies the amount of damping torque induced on the tie-line flows. The method, referred to as H2-power flow modification (H2-PFM) is carried out in twosteps. First, the regular OPF is solved to obtain the optimal generator setpoints for active and reactive power dispatch. Second, the load setpoints are re-tuned to minimize the aforesaid H2-norm while keeping the generator setpoints fixed. In particular, manipulating the load reactive power in this way is found to reduce the norm remarkably, improving disturbance attenuation and damping. A gradient descent algorithm is proposed for this minimization. Results are validated using the 68-bus test system with a solar farm.

    This letter addresses the modeling of a personal tendency by utilizing the data collected from a manned control system. In the control system, it is assumed that a control operator, namely a human controller, determines the control actions based on his/her tendency toward laziness. The tendency is described by a cost function that includes the L2 norm of the state and the L1 norm of the control action. Then, the operator behavior is modeled by the solution to the optimization problem formulated with the L2-state/L1-action cost function and the plant model. The tendency modeling is reduced to the problem of estimating the cost function. The estimation problem is further extended by taking into account the operator dynamics caused by the recognition and motion to derive an MPC-based formulation. Finally, the estimation method is demonstrated via an actual manned control experiment with a toy game.

    We propose a deterministic identification method that involves a priori information characterized as moments of a transfer function. The moments are expressed in terms of the solution to a Sylvester matrix equation. The Sylvester equation is incorporated with a conventional subspace identification method, and a problem for moment-constrained subspace identification is formulated. Since the identification problem is in a class of nonlinear optimization problems, it cannot be efficiently solved in numerical computation. Application of a change-of-variable technique reduces the problem to least squares optimization, and the solution provides a state-space model that involves the prespecified moments. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated in numerical simulations.

    We propose a control framework for human-in-the-loop systems, in which many human decision makers are involved in the feedback loop composed of a plant and a controller. The novelty of the framework is that the decision makers are weakly controlled; in other words, they receive a set of admissible control actions from the controller and choose one of them in accordance with their private preferences. For example, the decision makers can decide their actions to minimize their own costs or by simply relying on their experience and intuition. A class of controllers which output set-valued signals is designed such that the overall control system is stable independently of the decisions made by the humans. Finally, a learning algorithm is applied to the controller that updates the controller parameters to reduce the achievable minimal costs for the decision makers. Effective use of the algorithm is demonstrated in a numerical experiment.

    In this paper, we address a problem of enhancing damping performance of power systems. The performance enhancement is achieved by simultaneous design of the power flow and controllers. The power flow design problem is formulated as parameter design in the parameter-dependent power system model. We propose a solution method to the parameter design, which is based on iteratively solving linear matrix inequalities. In order to further improve the damping performance of the power system, controller design is combined with the parameter design.

    In this paper, we address a design problem of a community energy management system including power consumers. The behavior of the control system including consumers is inevitably affected by their decisions. We aim to construct a stable control system that is consistent with consumers' 'preferences.' To this end, the preferences are described as cost functions to formulate the problem of the control system design. In general, the assumption that the cost functions of all consumers are available for the design is too severe for practical systems. In this paper, we find a special class of the cost functions to propose a preference-independent design of the system. Finally, we confirm the usefulness of the proposed system through numerical simulation.

    In this paper, we propose a trajectory planning of aircraft to ensure the reduction and fair-sharing of aircraft noise. The fair-sharing of noise is realized by dispersing aircraft trajectories. The proposed trajectory planning consists of two stages. In the first stage, a performance index, which evaluates the accumulated noise for all areas, is calculated. The index, which takes into account noise accumulation, plays an essential role for trajectory dispersion. In the second stage, using the index, an optimization problem of planning aircraft trajectories is solved. Repeating these stages in a day, we realize to reduce and spatially share the noise. The effectiveness of the method is verified in a numerical experiment with actual flight data.

    This letter is devoted to the concept of instant model predictive control (iMPC) for linear systems. An optimization problem is formulated to express the finite-time constrained optimal regulation control, like conventional Model predictive control (MPC). Then, iMPC determines the control action based on the optimization process rather than the optimizer, unlike MPC. The iMPC concept is realized by a continuous-time dynamic algorithm of solving the optimization; the primal-dual gradient algorithm is directly implemented as a dynamic controller. On the basis of the dissipativity evaluation of the algorithm, the stability of the control system is analyzed. Finally, a numerical experiment is performed in order to demonstrate that iMPC emulates MPC and to show its less computational burden.

    In this paper, we address simultaneous estimation problems (SEPs) of state and physical parameters of rechargeable batteries. In general, the problems are transformed to state estimation of an augmented system whose state includes the parameters of the original system. Then, the SEPs are commonly solved by estimating the state of the augmented system. As a drawback of the solution, the simultaneous estimation fails for some types of the input currents. In this paper, we attempt to find input current conditions such that the SEPs are theoretically solved, through observability analysis of the augmented system.

    This paper addresses a system identification problem for multiple isolated systems whose parameters are partially identical. An approach to the problem is a centralized identification; a single estimator collects all the input-output data from all of the systems to estimate their parameters at once. However, the approach can be practically infeasible when it is applied to a large number of systems due to the limitation of computational and communication resources. To solve the issue, we propose a method of a networked identification composed of two stages: 1) Multiple estimators collect the data from their own target systems to independently derive temporary estimates of their parameters and a covariance matrix of the estimates. 2) Then, with communicating the temporary estimates and the covariance matrix, they update their estimates. We also show the optimality of the proposed networked identification method with respect to the modeling accuracy, which is equivalently achieved by the centralized identification. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the proposed method in a numerical simulation.

    In this paper, a localized control problem is formulated for large-scale systems: The disturbance propagation into or from a local target part of the system is inhibited by local control. As a preliminary, the parametrization of all stabilizing local controllers is introduced. Then, by specializing the parametrized controller, we give the solution to the localized control problem. Finally, the proposed controller is applied to a power network system. The use and effectiveness are demonstrated in the frequency control of the system.

    In this letter, we propose concepts of persistence and persistent control for uncertain dynamical systems. Motivated from their application to local controller design for expanding huge-scale systems, a problem of persistent control is formulated. A controller is designed such that for any arbitrarily large uncertainty the overall control system is stable. In addition, the performance of the overall system, measured by some norm, can be deteriorated for the large uncertainty, but is persistently prevented from being collapsed. Then, the control problem is solved via controller parametrization, and the characterization of the persistent controllers is given. Finally, a numerical example with some design guideline of the controller is illustrated.

    In this paper, we propose an identification method to construct a state-space model that inherits steady-state characteristics from an existing model. It is assumed that in prior to an identification experiment, a designer has a model which accurately expresses steady-state characteristics of an actual system responding to certain inputs. The characteristics are extracted and inherited to a reconstructed state-space model via the combination with a subspace identification method. By applying a change-of-variable technique, the combined identification problem, which is formulated as nonlinear optimisation, is reduced to a least squares problem. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the proposed method in three different numerical simulations.

    <p>In this paper, we propose a modeling method for an engine combustion system by applying the approximated Gaussian process regression. We model not only the output behavior of the combustion system, but also the uncertainty evaluation for the output estimation. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves almost the same level of modeling accuracy, while more efficiently reducing the computational cost than previous methods. Finally, we applied the constructed models and their uncertainty evaluations to control input design. For given desired outputs, we find the corresponding inputs of the engine system using the models and their uncertainty evaluations.</p>

    We propose a class of dynamical systems that enables us to quantitatively evaluate dissipation performance in addition to expressing qualitative dissipative properties. Assuming that two subsystems belong to the proposed class, we show that the dissipation performance is strictly improved via feedback connection. We construct a larger-scale system via recursive feedback connection of the dissipate subsystems. Then, the performance of the entire network system is gradually reinforced with the increase of the number of subsystems. Ultimately, the output of the system cannot be driven by any disturbance input.

    We propose a modeling method of the wind power output for very short-term prediction. The model has cascade structure composed of two parts: One is a linear dynamical part that is driven by a white Gaussian noise and described by an auto regressive model. The other is a nonlinear static part that is driven by the output of the linear part. This nonlinear part is designed such that the distribution of its output matches with that of the wind power output. The constructed model is utilized to one-step ahead prediction of the wind power output. Furthermore, we evaluate the relation between the prediction accuracy and the sampling period for modeling.

    In this paper, we propose a subspace identification method that involves a priori information of a system characterized in the frequency domain. We first transform the characteristics of the system over all frequency range into matrix inequalities that are linear in system matrices, by using the well-known Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov (KYP) lemma. To construct a model containing the specified frequency characteristics, we propose a subspace identification method under the matrix inequality constraints. Furthermore, the proposed method is extended to that involving with a priori information characterized only in a certain frequency range. Finally, we verify effectiveness of the proposed method in a numerical simulation.

    More effective and efficient methodology for control education is desired, so that more people understand the control theory and that research achievements on control can be applied more easily. As an introductory part of such methodology, some basic experiences should be given. Therefore, we propose two control experiments; One is to understand phenomena such as steady state error and overshoot through tuning PID controllers. The other is to understand mechanisms of control equipments and those connections. The effectiveness of the proposed method is examined via the questionairs to students.

    In this paper, we consider bifurcation analysis of nonlinear uncertain dynamical systems. A concept of robust bifurcation analysis is proposed.     This paper proposes a direct design method of state-space controllers for H&infin; control of linear time-invariant descriptor systems.     This paper proposes non-exponential stabilization of linear time-invariant systems by linear time-varying controllers. We consider state feedback and dynamic output feedback to make the states of the closed-loop systems decay non-exponentially. We first introduce a non-exponential stability concept that the state of a time-varying system converges to the origin with a bound provided by a desired function. Then, we give non-exponential stabilizability conditions and time-varying controllers to achieve the desired behavior of the closed-loop systems. By the proposed methods, we can realize various non-exponential behaviors, which may improve control performance.

    In order to utilize Model-Based-Control (MBD) such as robust control and model predictive control, and Model-Based-State-Estimation (MBSE) such as Kalman filter, it is necessary to build a precise mathematical model of the target plant. In this study, we aim to construct new modeling methods for practical systems by combining the data-based machine-learning in AI and system identification of the dynamic control theory. In particular, two modeling problems of nonlinear systems are considered. One is a gasoline engine of automobile and the other is lithium-ion secondary battery for electric vehicles. For the modeling of gasoline engine which has heavy nonlinearity, Gaussian process regression with active learning method is applied to design an effective modeling experiment. An adaptive identification method in consideration of the physical property of the lithium-ion battery is proposed, and the effectiveness if the method is examined through experiments with real battery.

The concept has been realized in design problems of reliable energy management and air traffic control systems.

    This study addresses transaural sound reproduction over loudspeakers, which is a virtual realization of a three-dimensional audio. In order to construct the three-dimensional audio, it is necessary to estimate head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) of the listener. First, an estimation method of HRTFs using multivariable system identification theory is proposed, and its effectiveness is examined using experimental data. Second, using the estimated HRTFs, a construction method of the transaural system for the three-dimensional audio is studied. In particular, a design method of a stable feedforward controller based on model matching is proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is examined through numerical simulations.

    In this research project, we aim to develop passivity-based robustness analysis of genetic network systems. The following two problems are mainly addressed and solved: 1) Robust instability analysis for general nonlinear dynamical systems is studied. Then, the proposed analysis theory is applied to qualitative and quantitative robustness analysis of oscillatory behavior appears in genetic networks and cell differentiation and reprogramming. 2) We found the robustness of a class of genetic networks is reinforced via the network scale-expansion. The reinforcement is modeled by the interconnection of strictly-passive dynamical systems. It is further investigated that the essence of the model is applicable for design problems in other research fields such as stabilization of power systems.
