The CO2 emissions of China exceeded America in 2005. Since then, China became the top and takes 20% of the CO2 emission in the whole world. Since China has a vast territory and differences in different provinces, when discussing the solution of reducing the CO2 emission, it is essential to take the effect of supply chain's upstream of industry and downstream which is including household expenditures, population and urbanization into account. Therefore the direct emission and embodied emissions based on household expenditures are important. The objectives of this study are to estimate the direct and embodied emission in the province levels, urban and rural separately and to take the emission intensity affected by economic development and policy, household expenditures, population and urbanization rate into account to estimate the future embodied emission of each provinces. Consequently, it turns out that the CO2 emissions will be increased by the regional development policy, urbanization, and the change of household consumption. On the other hand, it will be decreased by the improvement of the indirect emission intensity in the upstream of supply chain.

It is our great challenge to establish Low-carbon transport system in Asian region because the emission of carbon dioxide from transport sector in Asia is substantial and expected to grow over the future. In this study, interregional freight modal split in GMS was formulated as a goal programming problem which aimed to achieve the targets of transport cost, transport time and CO2 emission in order to calculate ecoefficient modal split. Two case study routes, Bangkok – Hanoi and Bangkok – Yangon, were examined by development scenarios and targets. As a result, the optimal modal splits for respective scenarios, targets and routes were calculated and the trends and differences between them were also revealed. The results also implied the efficiency of the railway introduction on the case study routes.

After the Tohoku Earthquake, the concept of urban resilience has been discussed widely in Japan. Resilient cities cannot be realized without considering energy and natural disaster risks. In this paper several land-use scenarios are used for the Tokyo Metropolitan Area in 2050 using a land-use model considering these two aspects. These scenarios consider the co-benefits of [i] change of urban form (compact city), [ii] adaptation to flooding risks, and [iii] diffusion of electric vehicles (EVs) and solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. Also, in this paper the effects of emission factor change on direct/indirect CO2 emissions due to the shutdown of nuclear power plants after the earthquake are analyzed. The results suggest that the diffusion of PVs is more important in the non-nuclear world to reduce CO2 emissions, and that EVs still can contribute to CO2 emission reduction despite changes in emission factor. Also, compact urban form can effectively reduce CO2 emissions.

Recently many municipalities and governments have stated that they will promote a compact urban layout as one of countermeasures for reducing CO2 emissions. It should be easy for municipalities to confirm environmental effects of compact urban layout, but quantitative information about CO2 reduction caused by compact urban layout, based on present state and redevelopment projects, are not yet completely available. An objective of this study is to evaluate the various compact urban layout scenarios that use SLIM CITY model from the viewpoint of CO2 reduction. Overall, this study shows that a corridor type urban layout scenario is significant from sustainable point of view.

To reduce CO2 emission by automobile usage, urban layout control such as making compact city regarded as the efficient method. This study aims to estimate CO2 emission by automobile usage at 38 cities from 1987 to 2005 based on National Person Trip Survey. The findings is that though urban density (compactness) in each city affects CO2 emission by automobile, no city could reduce the CO2 emission level during this period. It is also clarified that the increase of local automobile users is the most significant factor to affecthe time series changes of CO2 emission by automobile.

In recent years, numerous municipalities have announced plans for promoting compact city. Although precedent studies have shown the effects of compact cities mainly on a municipality scale, they cannot help municipalities to develop feasible plans. In addition, for the purpose of city planning, a support tool with illustrative images, that can help persons lacking in technical knowledge about city planning to comprehend it, is required. An objective of this study is to create the database based on a neighborhood scale around 30 ha, which corresponds with an actual policy scale. In other words, this study is intended to develop "Pictorial Archive of Japanese Ordinary Residential Zones", which can be used by expert on urban planning for sophisticated statistical analysis. A great accomplishment of this study is that the database can cover all types of neighborhood zones that exist in Japanese cities and provide a package of various indicators, including gasoline consumption.

In recent years, Compact city is paid attention, and it is promoted in our country in recent years. But the city keeps diffusing still and the environmental load keeps increasing. Therefore, in this research, it paid attention to the automobile fuel consumption that was the index of the environmental load so that doing the compact urban layout to what residential zone might clarify important to thenegative environmental load decrease. The change in automobile fuel consumption the passing age in the residential zone level to which the residential zone development were done was analyzed by using the type of residential zones. It was able to be clarified that as a result of the analysis, there was a difference in the increase and decrease of the automobile fuel consumption by the type of the city and the difference ofthe land use restriction.

Several studies have already indicated that building the compact urban layout issignificant countermeasure for reducing gasoline consumption and achieving more sustainable society. Meanwhile, so far Japanese cities have suffered from flooding caused by typhoons and heavy rain. As a prevent flood disaster, it should be effective that people retreat from hazardous areas from the hydrological point of view. The previously built up and presently underutilized land must be recycled as retarding basin. This study aims to evaluate the compact urban layout and desirable retreat patterns by SLIM CITY from the point of view of disaster prevention.

It is necessary to develop assessment tools for regional scale adaptation to climate change. We are developing 1) dynamical downscaling method using socio-economic land use scenarios in Tokyo Metropolitan Area to add spatial resolution to accurately assess critical interactions within the regional climate system for vulnerability assessments to climate change for regional scale adaptation, 2) regional-scale assessment of the impacts of climate and socio-economic change on flood and agriculture with the bottom-up perspective and landuse scenarios in Tokyo Metropolitan Area using an urban economic model. We will introduce our current perspectives and progress on this newly launched integrated research project.

The estimation of CO2 emission is the basis of climate change measures and sustainable social system. When the solutions of reducing the CO2 emission are discussed, it is essential to take the effect of supply chain’s upstream of industry and downstream which is including household expenditures, population and urbanization into account. Therefore the direct and indirect emissions based on household expenditures are important. The objectives of this study are to estimate the direct and indirect emission by top-down and bottom-up method, to develop hybrid method and to take the emission intensity affected by economic development and policy, household expenditures, population and urbanization rate into account to estimate the future emission. The results show that the emissions will be increased by the regional development policy, urbanization and household consumption. On the other hand, it will be decreased by the improvement of the emission intensity in the upstream of supply chain.

Paratransit, which is a transportation system rooted in the region, has been redefined under the name LAMAT (Locally Adapted, Modified and Advanced Transport). Together with researchers from Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, we conducted a comprehensive survey of medium-sized cities in Asian countries, including users, drivers, unions, and governments. Then, we clarified the uniqueness and generality of LAMAT, and developed a planning analytical tool to evaluate LAMAT's plans and projects. In addition, by experimenting some results in the model area, we obtained useful results to promote planning and projects in which LAMAT and the next-generation transportation system harmonize.
