Abstract. Wetlands are the largest natural source of atmospheric methane (CH4), yet comprehensive global budgets are typically delayed by several years, preventing a timely understanding of CH4 sources, sinks, and their trends. To reduce this delay, we present a model emulator-driven framework and accompanying workflow that enable timely, continuous emission updates and applying the framework to a global dataset of natural vegetated wetland CH4 emissions to extend the most recent Global Methane Budget (GMB; Saunois et al., 2025) record through 2025 at monthly 1°x1° resolution. We developed a machine-learning emulator to reconstruct spatially explicit monthly emission fields (global R2 =0.65 ± 0.003 (mean ± 95 % CI, hereafter) and RMSE=5.49 ± 0.12 ×10-3 Tg CH4/year in test data which is ~30 % of the total data). The emulator is trained on 35 GMB model estimates (22 process-based model estimates and 13 atmospheric inversion estimates) paired with 10 ensemble realizations of 11 gridded climate predictor variables from atmospheric reanalyses. While the global mean predicted wetland CH4 emissions for 2021–2025 (157.83 ± 2.38 Tg CH4/year) are only marginally higher (~0.05 Tg CH4/year) than the 2000–2020 baseline, this stability masks a significant hemispheric redistribution of emissions. We detect a surge in Northern Hemisphere emissions in 2021–2025, with mid- and high-latitudes increasing by 0.76 ± 0.07 (z-score: 2.21) and 0.35 ± 0.03 Tg/year (z-score:1.01), respectively, while the tropics and Southern Hemisphere extratropics show offsetting negative trends (-0.95 ± 0.19 and -0.11 ± 0.02 Tg/year with z-scores of -2.81 and -0.34, respectively). The predicted emissions capture the low emissions in 2023 in South America linked to El Niño-related drought, as reported by recent studies (Ciais et al., 2026; Quinn et al., 2025). Post-2020 growth rates of emission anomalies are a magnitude higher than that in 2000–2025, suggesting an intensification of emission variability. Furthermore, we identify a distinct seasonal amplification of global emission growth peaking in late boreal summer. This new dataset and operational framework bridge the gap between latest updated budgets and low-latency monitoring, providing a scalable capacity to frequently update global emission estimates and critical early warnings of regional wetland feedback loops. The data are publicly available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18870108 (Li et al., 2026).

Abstract. Eddy covariance observations play a pivotal role in understanding the land–atmosphere exchange of energy, water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and other trace gases, as well as the global carbon cycle and earth system. To promote the networking of individual measurements and the sharing of data, FLUXNET links regional networks of researchers studying land–atmosphere processes. JapanFlux was established in 2006 as a country branch of AsiaFlux. Despite the growing number of shared data globally, the availability in Asia is currently limited. In this study, we developed an open dataset of the eddy covariance observations for Japan and East Asia, called JapanFlux2024, that was conducted by researchers affiliated with Japanese research institutions. The dataset consists of data collected at 79 sites with 652 site-years from 1990 to 2023. The data format is fully compatible with the recent FLUXNET data product, FLUXNET2015. Here, we present the data description and data processing and show the value of processed fluxes of sensible heat, latent heat, and CO2. The dataset will facilitate important studies for Japan and East Asia, such as land-atmosphere interactions, improvement of process models, and upscaling fluxes using machine learning and remote sensing technology as well as bridge collaborations between Asia and FLUXNET.

    Abstract

As a result of climate change, the pan-Arctic region has seen greater temperature increases than other geographical regions on the Earth’s surface. This has led to substantial changes in terrestrial ecosystems and the hydrological cycle, which have affected the distribution of vegetation and the patterns of water flow and accumulation. Various remote sensing techniques, including optical and microwave satellite observations, are useful for monitoring these terrestrial water and vegetation dynamics. In the present study, satellite and reanalysis datasets were used to produce water and vegetation maps with a high temporal resolution (daily) and moderate spatial resolution (500 m) at a continental scale over Siberia in the period 2003–2017. The multiple data sources were integrated by pixel-based machine learning (random forest), which generated a normalized difference water index (NDWI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and water fraction without any gaps, even for areas where optical data were missing (e.g., cloud cover). For the convenience of users handling the data, an aggregated product is provided, formatted using a 0.1° grid in latitude/longitude projection. When validated using the original optical images, the NDWI and NDVI images showed small systematic biases, with a root mean squared error of approximately 0.1 over the study area. The product was used for both time-series trend analysis of the indices from 2003 to 2017 and phenological feature extraction based on seasonal NDVI patterns. The former analysis was used to identify areas where the NDVI is decreasing and the NDWI is increasing, and hotspots where the NDWI at lakesides and coastal regions is decreasing. The latter analysis, which employed double-sigmoid fitting to assess changes in five phenological parameters (i.e., start and end of spring and fall, and peak NDVI values) at two larch forest sites, highlighted a tendency for recent lengthening of the growing period. Further applications, including model integration and contribution to land cover mapping, will be developed in the future.

Recent advances in satellite-borne optical sensors led to important developments in the monitoring of tropical ecosystems in Asia, which have been strongly affected by recent anthropogenic activities and climate change. Based on our feasibility analyses conducted in Indonesia in Sumatra and Sarawak, Malaysia in Borneo, we discuss the current situation, problems, recent improvements, and future tasks regarding plant phenology observations and land-cover and land-use detection. We found that the Multispectral Instrument (MSI) on board the Sentinel-2A/2B satellites with a 10-m spatial resolution and 5-day observational intervals could be used to monitor phenology among tree species. For the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) on board the Himawari-8 geostationary satellite with a 1,000-m spatial resolution and 10-min observational intervals, we found that the time-series in vegetation indices without gaps due to cloud contamination may be used to accurately detect the timing and patterns of phenology among tree species, although the spatial resolution of the sensor requires further improvement. We also found and validated that text and pictures with geolocation information published on the Internet, and historical field notes could be used for ground-truthing land cover and land use in the past and present time. The future development of both high frequency (≤ 10 min) and high spatial resolution (≤ 10 m) optical sensors aboard satellites is expected to dramatically improve our understanding of ecosystems in the tropical Asia.

Recent advancements in new generation geostationary satellites have facilitated the application of their datasets to terrestrial monitoring. In this application, geolocation accuracy is an essential issue because land surfaces are generally heterogeneous. In the case of the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard Himawari-8, geometric correction of the Himawari Standard Data provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA data) was conducted using thermal infrared band with 2km spatial resolution. Based on JMA data, the Center for Environmental Remote Sensing (CEReS) at Chiba University applied a further geometric correction using a visible band with 500m spatial resolution and released a dataset (CEReS data). JMA data target more general users mainly for meteorological observations, whereas CEReS data aim at terrestrial monitoring for more precise geolocation accuracy. The objectives of this study are to clarify the temporal and spatial variations of geolocation errors in these two datasets and assess their stability for unexpected large misalignment. In this study, the temporal tendencies of the relative geolocation difference between the two datasets were analyzed, and temporal fluctuations of band 3 reflectances of JMA data and CEReS data at certain fixed sites were investigated. A change in the geolocation trend and occasional shifts greater than 2 pixels were found in JMA data. With improved image navigation performance, the geolocation difference was decreased in CEReS data, suggesting the high temporal stability of CEReS data. Overall, JMA data showed an accuracy of less than 2 pixels with the spatial resolution of band 3. When large geolocation differences were observed, anomalies were also detected in the reflectance of JMA data. Nevertheless, CEReS data successfully corrected the anomalous errors and achieved higher geolocation accuracy in general. As CEReS data are processed during the daytime due to the availability of visible bands, we suggest the use of CEReS data for effective terrestrial monitoring during the daytime.

The human impact on life on Earth has increased sharply since the 1970s, driven by the demands of a growing population with rising average per capita income. Nature is currently supplying more materials than ever before, but this has come at the high cost of unprecedented global declines in the extent and integrity of ecosystems, distinctness of local ecological communities, abundance and number of wild species, and the number of local domesticated varieties. Such changes reduce vital benefits that people receive from nature and threaten the quality of life of future generations. Both the benefits of an expanding economy and the costs of reducing nature’s benefits are unequally distributed. The fabric of life on which we all depend—nature and its contributions to people—is unravelling rapidly. Despite the severity of the threats and lack of enough progress in tackling them to date, opportunities exist to change future trajectories through transformative action. Such action must begin immediately, however, and address the root economic, social, and technological causes of nature’s deterioration.

A provisional surface reflectance (SR) product from the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) on-board the new generation geostationary satellite (Himawari-8) covering the period between July 2015 and December 2018 is made available to the scientific community. The Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) algorithm is used in conjunction with time series Himawari-8 AHI observations to generate 1-km gridded and tiled land SR every 10 minutes during day time. This Himawari-8 AHI SR product includes retrieved atmospheric properties (e.g., aerosol optical depth at 0.47µm and 0.51µm), spectral surface reflectance (AHI bands 1–6), parameters of the RTLS BRDF model, and quality assurance flags. Product evaluation shows that Himawari-8 AHI data on average yielded 35% more cloud-free, valid pixels in a single day when compared to available data from the low earth orbit (LEO) satellites Terra/Aqua with MODIS sensor. Comparisons of Himawari-8 AHI SR against corresponding MODIS SR products (MCD19A1) over a variety of land cover types with the similar viewing geometry show high consistency between them, with correlation coefficients (r) being 0.94 and 0.99 for red and NIR bands, respectively. The high-frequency geostationary data are expected to facilitate studies of ecosystems on daily to diurnal time scales, complementing observations from networks such as the FLUXNET.

Terrestrial carbon budget in Asia was analyzed using network data of site observation (e.g. AsiaFlux), remote sensing data, and terrestrial ecosystem models. Data-driven terrestrial CO2 fluxes were estimated using AsiaFlux observation and remote sensing data with a machine learning method. The data-driven estimation of CO2 fluxes were further evaluated with outputs from multiple terrestrial biosphere models, and we found consistent interannual variations and gradual increases in CO2 sink in Siberia. We also found large model-data differences in tropical Asia region.

Terrestrial submodels in earth system modeling framework contain large uncertainties in its accuracy, which in turn produces large uncertainties in projecting future global environmental changes. In this project, we developed an objective refinement procedure to a terrestrial ecosystem model using satellite-based products, and tested the effects of the submodel refinement on projecting future global changes within earth system modeling framework. We demonstrated that satellite-based land productsare effective in refining terrestrial submodels and the submodel refinement affects future projection of global environmental changes.

Solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) has been recognized to be a strong proxy to represent the photosynthesis at ecosystem-level simultaneously. To maximize the advantage of SIF, multiscale observations have been conducted, and discovered its behaviors under various environmental conditions, like as light condition. Additionally, the 3 dimensional radiative transfer model for SIF was developed and validated in field site. Those would give us a more chance to explorer the ecosystem level photosynthesis over wide area via SIF.

Carbon dioxide assimilation by the terrestrial plant photosynthesis is one of the major compartment in the global carbon budget. There is still a great uncertainty in the global photosynthesis evaluation. Recently, the emerging satellite monitoring technology has enabled to derive the sun Induced Fluorescence (SIF) of terrestrial plant from space. These data have started to use in the model validation or constraints. In this study, we developed a new precise radiation transfer model for the SIF simulation in forests. The developed model was evaluated in several forest sites in Japan and interior Alaska, USA.

Arctic warming has been affecting mid-latitude climate. Arctic warming progresses the degradation of tundra and permafrost, that increase methane (CH4) emission, resulting in accelerating the warming. In this study, we observed CH4 exchange at poorly drained black spruce forest in Alaska applying micrometeology techniques and chambers, to reveal the processes of CH4 exchange.
Obtained data have been compiled as long-term high quality dataset and opened for scientific users on global change syudies. We also archived referent data from foreign researchers for a global scale database. Based on the data, the parameters of the carbon balance model were improved, and providing better CH4 budget evaluation globaly. Observed results showed that understory of black spruce forest showed large CH4 absorption during drought, while daily CH4 budget changed between sink and source according to soil water content. Results may contribute to improving the accuracy of climate model prediction.

In this study, we developed a new three dimensional sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence emission model. The three dimensional forest structure information was collected by the terrestrial LiDAR measurements of the trees in the field site. The collected data were used as input data of the developed model. With this newly developed model, the simulated global patterns of sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence were evaluated. This study also quantified the applicability and limit of the developed model. Satellite measurement of the global sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence is one of the upcoming and encouraging variables to make better understanding in the global terrestrial photosynthesis estimation. The new model will contribute to the improved understanding of the relationship between satellite-based sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence measurements and leaf- and canopy-scale photosynthesis.

Methane (CH4) is a strong greenhouse gas and wet ecosystem is CH4 source. However, CH4 budget and the mechanism underlying are still unknown at wetlands and boreal forests on permafrost, where CH4 sink and source distributed heterogeneously. We observed CH4 flux at boreal forest in Alaska. We obtained accurate CH4 flux results by applying multiple measurement methods such as eddy covariance, gradient, REA and chambers. Those approved the sink CH4 flux under dry vegetation conditions while an obvious source under wet conditions after rain, and the seasonal variations at the site were clearly determined.
Relationships among environmental factors and CH4 flux were analyzed which were used to improve parameters of a process base model "VISIT". Support vector regression (SVR) was applied to estimate regional scale CO2 flux using satellite remote sensing and measured CO2 flux at 23 tower sites over Alaska, and the reliable results comparing to previous models were obtained.

For better prediction of future climate at Asian dryland, a numerous landsurface process models were intercompared each other using observation at Asian dryland as forcing drivers. These models are subprograms of climate models to reproduce water, energy and vegetation processes at landsurface, and in this project they are used independently, i.e. “off-line”, of climate models. Two sites at Asian dryland were selected as target sites. The data needed to drive the models were archived, and information on soil and vegetation were collected: One of the finest data set in Asian dryland was constructed. Then, these data were used to drive 11 state-of-the-art numerical models of landsurface processes. The outputs generated by these models were also archived, and they were subject to mutual comparison. This way of comparison is called model intercomparison, and shed a light into differences in reproducibility of landsurface processes caused by different coding between the models. This gave an insight into current status of modeling skills of landsurface processes at Asian dryland. This study constitute a Japanese part of the international project called ADMIP (Asian Dryland Model Intercomparison Project), and was conducted in close link with ADMIP.

The heat island effect in urban areas is caused by not only anthropologic heat discharge but also heat balance changes as a result of surface land-cover changes. This study developed a new analysis method that enables us to discriminate these two effects and to evaluate them quantitatively. A heat balance model was modified to be able to distinguish the two components ; the anthropologic sensible heat due to anthropologic heat discharge, and the natural sensible heat due to solar and atmospheric radiation. The model calculates surface heat flux components ; net radiation, ground heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux, respectively. The sensible heat flux is proportional to a difference of the surface and atmosphere temperatures. We assumed that the anthropologic sensible heat can be given as a difference between the actually measured sensible heat flux and the modeled sensible heat flux from the solar radiation. By using this model, the heat balance in Nagoya was analyzed. Model inputs were of the parameters from high-resolution satellite remote sensing data such as ASTER and Landsat/ETM+, and the meteorological data such as temperature, solar radiation, and wind speed. As a result, we could obtain reasonable heat balance changes that reflect seasonal air-conditioning demands and solar radiation patterns. Moreover, the sensible heat fluxes of the urban areas were always higher than those of the other land-cover types. Consequently, we concluded that our new method allowed us to estimate anthropologic heat discharge in urban areas, and is quite useful to investigate the heat island effect in urban areas.
