Abstract

A simple method for determining elemental sulfur in environmental water was developed and applied to seawater samples collected immediately after the occurrence of blue tides in Tokyo Bay. To investigate the concentration and extraction methods, artificial elemental sulfur was quantitatively produced by oxidizing a sulfide solution with an iodine solution, then used as a standard reagent in the experiments. To concentrate the elemental sulfur in the water sample, glass filter paper (GF/F) was used to filter and collect the elemental sulfur. The elemental sulfur was then extracted using n-hexane, the main component of petroleum ether; however, the recovery of elemental sulfur from the wet glass filter paper was low, and remained so even when the glass filter paper was dried. We, therefore, used a mixture of n-hexane and an acetone solvent, which is a hydrophilic organic solvent, for extraction and succeeded in recovering more than 90% of the elemental sulfur from the wet glass filter paper. Using this solvent mixture, we extracted and quantified elemental sulfur from seawater samples collected after the occurrence of blue tide, and detected 0.36–0.38 mgS L–1 of elemental sulfur in the near-surface layer. We also found that the elemental sulfur concentrations were higher in the surface layer than in the bottom layer. Therefore, we demonstrated that the quantification of elemental sulfur is important to better understand the blue tide phenomenon.

A coupled human fluid numerical model was applied to transportion of a water accident sufferer in a channel with a weir-like obstacle on the bed. Simulations were conducted with 80 differrent combinations of water depth, flow velocity and weir height. As a result of the simulations, two different processes for getting over the weir were found. When flow speed exceeds 1m/s, the sufferer suspends in water and gets over the weir. Otherwise, if flow speed exceeds 0.5 m/s and weir’s height is less than 50cm, the sufferer gets over the weir in rolling on weir’s surface.

The age of bottom water which indicates the period in which oceanic water stays at the bottom of the inner bay basin after intrusion from the bay mouth was calculated to verify whether the age is a good index for the development of bottom water hypoxia. The spatially distributed water quality data was utilized in this study for three consecutive year in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The data was observed monthly on sixteen monitoring stations by Suzuka fisheries laboratory of Mie prefectural government. To calculate the age of bottom water, a temperature-based age index model was used, the model based on the assumption that bottom water in the Ise Bay originates from the bay mouth (Lower strait water) in the predominate stratified period, i.e., summer season and age of the bottom water is the elapsed time from the beginning of intrusion from the bay mouth. From the analysis of age index model, it was found that the age of bottom water was higher in the center of the bay and water can be of 60 days old whereas near the bay mouth it was much younger and its age varied from 0 to 10 days. In September 2014, the entire basin accounted for younger water mass with a maximum age of 10 days at the center as compared to other years. Overall bottom water age in Ise Bay has also been calculated by taking an average of all stations, and it was found that the maximum average age occurred in June 2013 while the minimum one occurred in September 2014. The bottom water oxygen concentration indicated a high average correlation coefficient (R2 >0·70) with bottom water age in June, July, and August, whereas low average correlation coefficient (R2 <0·30) in September.

The Shiretoko Peninsula which is located in the eastern part of Hokkaido, where nutrient circulataion between inland and the ocean is revealed to play a great role in ecological system. Because of the unique system, "Shiretoko" was registered as the World Natural Heritage. However, previous studies demonstrated that precipitation pattern has been affected by climate change, which may cause the change in the ecological system. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate nutrient flux from the inland to the ocean in the future. According to the previous studies, precipitation is consdered one of the most significant components controlling nutrient supply. Two bias correction techniques were applied by using the MRI-AGCM3.1S. As a result, it is revealed that the cdf correction techique shows better reproduction regarding the nutrient flux compared to the normal distribution correction technique.

In the Banjo River (Saiki, Oita), the population of clam drastically decreased after 1994 and has not been recovered yet. In order to make the reason clear some field surveys on water quality (: DO, salinity, water temperature, etc.), sediment quality and flow patterns were carried out from 2003 to 2004 in the Banjo estuary and Saiki Bay. Measurement results by ADCP showed the dominant flood current through the shorter navigation channel and the dominant ebb current through the longer one. In addition, water body tended to be stagnant in a neap tide and oxygen deficiency was measured in the longer channel. It was confirmed that temporal variation of DO concentration in the Banjo estuary depended on both flow patterns of tidal current and a redox conditions in the sediment.

In a shallow lake, the interaction between convective circulation and biological activities are important for material circulation. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the effect of nocturnal cooling on convective circulation and purification activities in a shallow lake. We have conducted a measurement of temperature and water quality in a littoral zone of a brackish lake, Lake Shinji, where filter-feeding bivalves (Corbicula japonica) are densely populated. To confirm the mechanism of convective circulation, numerical simulation was also carried out. Results showed that diurnal heating and nocturnal cooling created density gradients that drove strong horizontal mass exchange. Those phenomena contribute the promotion of purification.

Field observations have been made with respect to the diel vertical migration of dinoflagellate, Peridinium bipes and nutrient concentration profiles in a thermal stratified reservoir. Results showed that P. bipes could take nutrients and photosynthesize by migration in a calm thermal stratified mesotrophic reservoir. Faster migration from surface layer to middle layer was advantageous to take nutrients, and the possibility of active migration of P. bipes was suggested from the estimation of setting velocity. Furthermore, observational results suggested that P. bipes migration played an important role in nutrient cycling in a stratified reservoir.

In a river, in which salmon and trout migrate upstream for spawning, Marine Derived Nutrient (MDN) plays great role in river ecosystem, and MDN is revealed to be necessary for sustainable ecological system. Nutrient is shown to be supplied from an entire river basin not just from an inside of a river. It is demonstrated that the consumption and restoration of migration fish by mammals and birds from a viewpoint of river ecosystem, which may result in the dispersion of MDN into an entire river basin by mammals and birds. Therefore, this study aims to reveal how MDN is restored into a river basin and how much the restoration rate of MDN is from the ocean into an entire watershed.

A new system for precise measurement of vertical profiles of mean and turbulent flow structure immediately above the sediment-water interface is introduced. In this system, an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) was attached to an elevation system in order to measure precise vertical profiles of three-component velocities in the range from 0.1 to 27cm above the sediment surface in the field. This system enables an onboard operator to know the accurate measurement height, and to move the ADV vertically at any points. The application of this system to in situ measurements of velocity profiles immediately above the sediment is mentioned. Observational results show the same properties of flow as literature values.

Halophila japonica sp. nov. is described from Japan. Although this entity has long been referred to as H. ovalis, data obtained from detailed morphological examination of field collections and herbarium specimens, geographical distribution records and ITS sequence analyses demonstrate that it is distinguishable from all other members of this genus and can be recognized as a new species. H. japonica is presently reported to occur from Ibusuki (Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu region, Japan) in the south, to Mutsu Bay (Aomori Prefecture, Honshu region, Japan) in the north. In order to better characterize H. ovalis materials from Japan, some observations on this species were also provided. As an outcome of this study, there are now four species of Halophila known from Japan: H. ovalis, H. euphlebia, H. decipiens and H. japonica.

In order to study the effectiveness of lifejacket wearing at the time of tsunami disaster, we conducted experiments using a large experimental flume. As a result, it has been shown that the person with lifejacket can be floated on the water surface, reducing the risk of drowning. In addition, the possibility of using plastic bottles was shown as an alternative. Furthermore, we developed a position indication system that combines a commercially available GPS positioning device and a mobile phone communication device, and a real-time drifter prediction system, for the purpose of speeding up and streamlining life saving immediately after the disaster.

Hypolimnion water in the dredged area (Water depth : 15m) of brackish Lake Nakaumi, Japan, has been exposed to anoxic condition for a long term except for winter season. The experiment supplying the high dissolved oxygen water was performed at the dredged area during 2007 to 2009. In this study, we used a new technology (WEP system : MATSUE DOKEN Co., Ltd.) for introducing the high dissolved oxygen water into the dredged area. As a result, the dissolved oxygen concentration in hypolimnion was increased up to 15~29mg/L nearby the outlet of WEP system, and was kept at 5-15mg/L in the whole experimental site, for a 6 month (09May-Oct) in spite of the tidal current.
Monthly variations of hydrogen sulfide (H_2S) and methane (CH_4) were observed at the bottom water in the dredged area. In addition, H_2S concentration and CH_4 producing rate in sediments were also observed at the same area. No accumulations of H_2S and CH_4 were detected in the bottom water during the operation of the WEP system. Moreover, H_2S was almost disappeared at 0-4cm depth in sediment, and also CH_4 producing rate decreased markedly compared to that at the control area.
In the case of a freshwater lake, generally, the iron (II) is released from the bottom sediment in a reduction state. In brackish Lake Nakaumi, however, it is trapped by the hydrogen sulfide derived from sulfate reducing and cannot be released. In the present study, hydrogen sulfide was oxidized and disappeared, and the environment that iron (II) can be released from the bottom sediment was formed. Thus, the effect of release inhibition from bottom sediment for phosphate phosphorus was observed.
The effect of high dissolved oxygen water on self-purifying function for nitrogen nutrient based on nitrification and denitrification was investigated. An active nitrification was induced by the increase of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the bottom water, followed by induction of denitrifying activity in the sediment-water system. It was also suggested that nitrification was inhibited by high concentration of dissolved oxygen exceeding 200%.
Benthos such as polychaetes, Paraprionospio patiens, Prionospio pulchra etc. could form their habitat at the dredged area throughout the experimental periods. However, bivalves were not settled during the periods. The captured organisms in the sediment traps (40cm long and 10cm inner diameter pipes) showed that the larvae of Asari clam, Ruditapes philippinarum and Asian mussel, Musculista senhousia, could reach the bottom layer but could not recruit probably due to low pH less than 8 in deeper than three 3m.
Thus, it was suggested that the present new technology is very useful for an environmental improvement of the bottom water and sediment in lakes.

In order to evaluate the environmental dynamism in the complex ecosystem of coral reef, seagrass bed and mangrove forest, we conducted three types of research. One is the transect measurement of nutrient flux as well as physical movement of water between coral reef-seagrass bed-mangrove forest ecosystems.
Second is the GIS of underwater environment, i.e. seagrass bed and coral reef. Using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with a submersible digital camera and a quadrat, we obtained still and video images of these ecosystems. The data were arrange according to the ship records. User can select any records from PC display, and can see the underwater scenery along the ship record
Third is to investigate how these ecosystems depend on one another from the viewpoint of organic geochemistry. We analyzed chief primary producers and sediment in each ecosystem for the distribution of lipid biomarkers and the ^<13>C content of total organic carbon. Lipids in the terrestrial higher plants were characterized by the distribution of n-alkanes high at C29/C31, high content of diterpenes (e.g., phyllocladene), high content of triterpenones (e.g., friedelin), and the predominance of triterpenols (e.g., b-amyrin) over sterols. Lipids in the seagrasses were characterized by the distribution of n-alkanes high at C21, C23, and C25, lowcontent of triterpenones, and the predominance of sterols (e.g., b-sitosterol) over triterpenols. Lipids in corals were characterized by the presence of sterols (e.g., gorgosterol) and the absence of n-alkanes, triterpenones, and triterpenols. Lipids in the sediments from mangrove forest were found to resemble those in the terrestrial higher plants. Lipids in the sediments from seagrass bed were characterized by high content of triterpenones, and the predominance of triterpenols over sterols, reflecting a major input of organic matter from mangrove forest. Lipids in the sediment from coral reef did not include triterpenones nor triterpenols.
The data of ^<13>C content of TOC also suggested that the contribution of terrestrial organic matter was large to the sediments from seagrass bed, but little to the sediment from coral reef. We therefore conclude that seagrass bed works as a barrier against terrestrial input, and protects coral reef from eutrophication in the subtropical ecosystems in Ishigaki Island.

The environment of coastal area can be represented by two major factors, I.e. the biochemical factors such as the water quality, the bottom quality, etc, and the physical factors such as the tides, waves, water depth, etc. Taking those two factors in vertical and horizontal axis respectively, the environmental changes due to coastal development are evaluated by following location change of plotting position of a certain coastal area after development. This chart is called "the Environmental Coordinate Chart".
First, the water quality, the bottom quality, and the living thing were investigated by sampling at 12 sea areas of Kyushu Island on the same season. And, the Environmental Coordinate Chart of these sea areas was made by plotting on the appropriate position.
Secondly, the environmental changes of Hakata bay and Ariake Sea due to the change of the tidal range, the inflow load and the reclamation area were investigated using the numerical ecosystem model and the Environmental Coordinate Chart. As a result, it was found that the environmental changes are clearly different due to original environmental condition before development even if the change of a physical factor was the same.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion, observed in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs, damages natural benthic organisms and induces nutrient release from the sediment. For this problem, a method which injects surface water, including a large amount of DO into the bottom layer in which DO is often depleted, is proposed. In this system, surface water injected into hypolimnion is cooled down to a water temperature of hypolimnion by a heat exchanger, and forms a thin oxic layer immediately above the sediment. As a result, nutrients release from the sediment could be suppressed by operating this system. Effects of surface-water injection into hypolimnion on water quality by this system had been already proved in small-scale area. In this study, therefore, we investigated the degree of water-quality restoration in case of continuous surface-water injection in hypolimnion by field experiments in Lake Tase in Iwate Prefecture, which has 6.0km^2 surface area. Experimental results in 2001 showed that DO concentration in hypolimnion was improved within at least 20m from the experimental equipment. After that, some devices were improved, therefore, expanded effect on the enhancement of DO concentration in hypolimnion was observed within at least 40m from the experimental equipment in 2002. In the period when DO concentration had been improved, PO_4^<3->-P concentration in hypolimnion kept decreasing and it was lowest at the system-installed point. The nitrification was also showed, accompanied by decreasing of NH_4^+-N concentration. These results suggested that injection of surface water into the hypolimnion made water quality in the bottom layer purified, and that appropriate and continuous injection of surface water could expand its water-purification ability, even in a large-scale water area like Lake Tase.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion, which is usually observed in eutrophic lakes and reservoirs, damages natural benthic organisms and enhances nutrient release from the sediment. As a countermeasure aganist these problems, a method which injects surface water including a large amount of DO into the bottom layer, in which DO is often depleted, was proposed. In this study, the water quality restoration in case of continuous or intermittently injection of surface water into hypolimnion was investigated by field experiments performed in an enclosure system which is 100m^2 in area, and in a reservoir which is 15000m^2 in area and 5m in maximum depth. Furthermore, the effect of this system on sediment quality restoration was also investigated by a laboratory experiment.
Field experimental results revealed that this system suppressed nutrient and dissolved metals release from the sediment even when DO was depleted by sediment oxygen demand (SOD). Laboratory experimental results also revealed that SOD measured after the procedure had smaller values than those measured before the procedure. This might be due to the continuous DO consumption of organinc materials in the sediment during summer in 2000, promoted by continuous injection of surface water. The experimental and observational results indicate that this system is a promising method to restore water and sediment qualities in enclosed water areas.
