    We employ a dry-type phantom to evaluate the performance of a diamond quantum magnetometer with a high sensitivity of about 6 pT/Hz from the viewpoint of practical measurement in biomagnetic sensing. The dry phantom is supposed to represent an equivalent current dipole (ECD) generated by brain activity, emulating an encephalomagnetic field. The spatial resolution of the magnetometer is evaluated to be sufficiently higher than the length of the variation in the encephalomagnetic field distribution. The minimum detectable ECD moment is evaluated to be 0.2 nA m by averaging about 8000 measurements for a standoff distance of 2.4 mm from the ECD. We also discuss the feasibility of detecting an ECD in the measurement of an encephalomagnetic field in humans. We conclude that it is feasible to detect an encephalomagnetic field from a shallow cortex area such as the primary somatosensory cortex.

    We report dispersive spin shot noise measurement of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). While dispersive probing has been used for quantum spin noise measurement of thermal and cold gases for decades, confirmative measurement of shot noise of real spin, i.e., the linear dependence of the spin variance on the number of atoms in a BEC, has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate precise spin noise measurement of a BEC of rubidium atoms at the spin shot noise level by polarization rotation using a two-color probe at optimal detunings, with power balance stabilization to suppress probe-induced excess spin noise. This work opens the possibility for the unexplored study of quantum spin fluctuations in multicomponent or spinor BECs and offers an approach to improve spin measurement precision, which is relevant to atomic spin-based sensors.

    Abstract

    This study proposes compact, highly sensitive, and stable diamond quantum sensors for a wide range of applications, including biomedical and energy electronics. For enhanced sensitivity and alignment precision within the objective field, a high‐quality, (111)‐oriented 12C‐enriched chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond, featuring a nitrogen‐vacancy (NV) axis in the (111) direction, is employed as the sensor. To increase the fluorescence collection efficiency, the laser beam is irradiated from the side surface of the CVD diamond, and fluorescence is detected using a compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) lens. The floor noise level of the magnetic field signal is 44 pT/Hz0.5. An Allan deviation of 1.2 pT over 1000 s of averaging demonstrates stability. This is attributable to the integration of a balancing circuit to cancel out laser noise, alongside mechanisms to compensate for temperature fluctuations and a copper housing to shield against electromagnetic field noise.

    Abstract

    We measured transitions between the hyperfine levels of the electronic ground state of potassium-39 atoms (transition frequency: 460 MHz) as the atoms moved through a periodic magneto-static field produced above the magnetic-stripe domains of a magnetic film. The period length of the magnetic field was 3.8 µm. The atoms were incident to the field as an impinging beam with the most probable velocity of 550 m s−1 and experienced a peak oscillating field of 20 mT. Unwanted spin relaxation caused by the collisions of the atoms with the film surface was suppressed by the paraffin coating on the film. We observed increasing hyperfine transition probabilities as the frequency of the field oscillations experienced by the atoms increased from 0 to 140 MHz for the atomic velocity of 550 m s−1, by changing the incident angle of the atomic beam with respect to the stripe domains. Numerical calculation of the time evolution of the hyperfine states revealed that the oscillating magnetic field experienced by the atoms induced the hyperfine transitions, and the main process was not a single-quantum transition but rather multi-quanta transitions.
