    ABSTRACT

    To investigate the anisotropic properties of biomaterials, two distinct classes are considered as follows: polymer‐based (cellulose in plants) and crystalline‐based (enamel in teeth), each demonstrating distinct structural and functional characteristics. Four‐angle polarization spectral mapping of sub‐1‐ bamboo slices was carried out in the mid‐IR spectral range (2.5–20 ) to reveal the 3D organization of the chemical bonding of cellulose using the key characteristic absorption bands associated with C–O–C and C–N vibrational modes. The longitudinal and transverse microtome slices revealed a switch between the presence and absence of dichroism in parenchyma cell walls and vascular bundles. The cell wall showed continuous alignment of the C–O–C stretching vibrational mode (8.6 /1163 ) down to the pixel resolution of in the transverse slice; the cell wall thickness is . Thin microtomed slices of a tooth were measured in transmission and reflection modes. The single‐point reflection measurements, performed using two perpendicular orientations, revealed orientational anisotropy in the enamel, which was absent in the dentin region. High subdiffraction lateral resolution was numerically validated using a simplified toy model of a Gaussian beam. The model showed that the orientation of small absorbers can be revealed using a focal spot of .

    Understanding heat transport at the graphene-polymer (Gr-polymer) interface is the key to improve the thermal conductivity of Gr-based nanocomposites. Here, we fabricate poly (methyl methacrylate)/graphene (PMMA/Gr) nanolaminates and find an ultrahigh increase of the in-plane thermal conductivity (8.9 ± 0.9 Wm−1K−1) compared to net PMMA and the thermal conductivity anisotropy (approximately equal to 53) at low Gr loading (1 vol. %). The strong anisotropic thermal conduction can be attributed to the predominantly in-plane oriented Gr nanoflake and, intriguingly, the graphene-induced planar alignment of PMMA in the proximity of Gr, as revealed by polarized infrared spectroscopic (-IR) imaging, nano-FTIR and IR s-SNOM. We demonstrated the contribution of interface-induced confinement to the observed thermal property, providing deeper insights into heat transport at the Gr-polymer interface.

    Abstract

    Next-generation power electronics require efficient heat dissipation management, and molecular design guidelines are needed to develop polymers with high thermal conductivity. Polymer materials have considerably lower thermal conductivity than metals and ceramics due to phonon scattering in the amorphous region. The spontaneous orientation of the molecular chains of liquid crystalline polymers could potentially give rise to high thermal conductivity, but the molecular design of such polymers remains largely empirical. In this study, we developed a machine learning model that predicts with more than 96% accuracy whether liquid crystalline states will form based on the chemical structure of the polymer. By exploring the inverse mapping of this model, we identified a comprehensive set of chemical structures for liquid crystalline polyimides. The polymers were then experimentally synthesized, and the results confirmed that they form liquid crystalline phases, with all polymers exhibiting calculated thermal conductivities within the range of 0.722–1.26 W m−1 K−1.

    Liquid crystals (LCs) are unique heat transfer media that exhibit large anisotropy in thermal properties depending on the direction of the director (n) of the LC state. This phenomenon is the basis of thermal conduction in ordered soft materials, and has been extensively studied to understand thermal conduction in soft materials. In this study, we used inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) to investigate the anisotropic thermal diffusivity and collective dynamics in the terahertz region of a pyrimidine-type LC (PYP8O8). The dispersion relations at several frequencies corresponding to the LC state were analyzed in the directions parallel and perpendicular to n. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the anisotropy of the sound velocity and that of the attenuation coefficient (Γ) estimated from the shape parameter of the IXS spectrum. The results for the linewidth of inelastic excitation show Q2 dependence that is far beyond the viscoelastic relaxation of the system, and the anisotropy in the collective dynamics predicted by Forster . [] in the hydrodynamic region can be extensively applied to the more localized collective motion of LC systems.

    Abstract

    Computational methods have been established as cornerstones in optical imaging and holography in recent years. Every year, the dependence of optical imaging and holography on computational methods is increasing significantly to the extent that optical methods and components are being completely and efficiently replaced with computational methods at low cost. This roadmap reviews the current scenario in four major areas namely incoherent digital holography, quantitative phase imaging, imaging through scattering layers, and super-resolution imaging. In addition to registering the perspectives of the modern-day architects of the above research areas, the roadmap also reports some of the latest studies on the topic. Computational codes and pseudocodes are presented for computational methods in a plug-and-play fashion for readers to not only read and understand but also practice the latest algorithms with their data. We believe that this roadmap will be a valuable tool for analyzing the current trends in computational methods to predict and prepare the future of computational methods in optical imaging and holography.

    Polarimetry is used to determine the Stokes parameters of a laser beam. Once all four S0,1,2,3 parameters are determined, the state of polarisation is established. Upon reflection of a laser beam with the defined S polarisation state, the directly measured S parameters can be used to determine the optical properties of the surface, which modified the S-state upon reflection. Here, we demonstrate polarimetry for the determination of surface anisotropies related to birefringence and dichroism from different materials, which have a common feature of linear patterns of different alignments and scales. It is shown that polarimetry in the back-reflected light is complementary to ellipsometry and four-polarisation camera imaging.

    Although the finding of superelasticity and ferroelasticity in organic crystals has been serendipitous, an increasing number of organic crystals with such deformation properties have been witnessed. Understanding the structure-property relationship can aid in the rational selection of intermolecular interactions to design organic crystals with desired superelastic or ferroelastic properties. In this study, we investigated the mechanical deformation in two cocrystals, prepared with the parent compound, 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene with two coformers, 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane and pyrene. The parent compound and coformers were chosen to introduce distinct weak interactions such as halogen bonds and C-H⋯F, and π⋯π interactions in the crystal structure. The two cocrystals exhibited different mechanical deformations, superelasticity, and ferroelasticity, respectively. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction and energy framework analysis of the crystal structure of the cocrystals revealed that both deformations were caused by mechanical twinning. Interestingly, a difference in the extent of deformation was observed, modulated by a combination of strong and weak intermolecular interactions in the superelastic cocrystal, and only weak interaction in the ferroelastic one. In this comparison, the superelastic cocrystal exhibited higher thermal diffusivity than the ferroelastic cocrystal, indicating the presence of symmetrical and relatively robust intermolecular interactions in the superelastic cocrystal.

    A two-directional ferroelastic deformation in organic crystals is unprecedented owing to its anisotropic crystal packing, in contrast to isotropic symmetrical packing in inorganic compounds and polymers. Thereby, finding and constructing multidirectional ferroelastic deformations in organic compounds is undoubtedly complex and at once calls for deep comprehension. Herein, we demonstrate the first example of a two-directional ferroelastic deformation with a unique scissor-like movement in single crystals of trans-3-hexenedioic acid by the application of uniaxial compression stress. A detailed structural investigation of the mechanical deformation at the macroscopic and microscopic levels by three distinct force measurement techniques (including shear and three-point bending test), single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, and polarized synchrotron-FTIR microspectroscopy highlighted that mechanical twinning promoted the deformation. The presence of two crystallographically equivalent faces and the herringbone arrangement promoted the two-directional ferroelastic deformation. In addition, anisotropic heat transfer properties in the parent and the deformed domains were investigated by thermal diffusivity measurement on all three axes using microscale temperature-wave analysis (μ-TWA). A correlation between the anisotropic structural arrangement and the difference in thermal diffusivity and mechanical behavior in the two-directional organoferroelastic deformation could be established. The structural and molecular level information from this two-directional ferroelastic deformation would lead to a more profound understanding of the structure-property relationship in multidirectional deformation in organic crystals.

    A four-polarisation camera was used to map the absorbance of olivine micro-grains before and after high-temperature annealing (HTA). It is shown that HTA of olivine xenoliths at above 1200 °C in O2 flow makes them magnetised. Different modes of operation of the polariscope with polarisation control before and after the sample in transmission and reflection modes were used. The reflection type was assembled for non-transparent samples of olivine after HTA. The sample for optical observation in transmission was placed on an achromatic, plastic, quarter-wavelength waveplate as a sample holder. Inspection of the sample’s birefringence (retardance), as well as absorbance, was undertaken. The best fit for the transmitted intensity or transmittance T (hence, absorbance A=−log10T) is obtainable using a simple best fit with only three orientations (from the four orientations measured by the camera). When the intensity of transmitted light at one of the orientations is very low due to a cross-polarised condition (polariser–analyser arrangement), the three-point fit can be used. The three-point fit in transmission and reflection modes was validated for T(θ)=Amp×cos(2θ−2θshift)+offset, where the amplitude Amp, offset offset, and orientation azimuth θshift were extracted for each pixel via the best fit.

    A device consisting of a line- or spiral-shaped temperature sensor array on a two-dimensional (2D) silicon nitride (SiNx) membrane of thickness 50 or 150 nm is developed for use in the lock-in photothermal method to determine the in-plane thermal diffusivity of SiNx membranes in air and in vacuum. The results of 2D heat diffusion are analyzed by the quadrupole method, and the system is approximated to the one-dimensional (1D) fin standing in a surrounding media (the fin approximation). The results show that 2D thermal diffusion on the membrane is affected not only by heat exchange with the surrounding environment but also by parallel thermal diffusion caused by heat conduction in the air along the membrane surface. The measurement using photothermal heating and contact detection of the temperature response enables the phenomenon to be detected consistently at a wide frequency range of temperature waves (50–1000 Hz). The measured thermal diffusivity values of the SiNx membrane are much smaller than those of bulk material, which can be reasonably considered an effect of the confined state of the phonon in the nanoscale geometry of the membrane.

    The analysis of biological samples with polarized infrared spectroscopy (p-IR) has long been a widely practiced method for the determination of sample orientation and structural properties. In contrast to earlier works, which employed this method to investigate the fundamental chemistry of biological systems, recent interests are moving toward “real-world” applications for the evaluation and diagnosis of pathological states. This focal point review provides an up-to-date synopsis of the knowledge of biological materials garnered through linearly p-IR on biomolecules, cells, and tissues. An overview of the theory with special consideration to biological samples is provided. Different modalities which can be employed along with their capabilities and limitations are outlined. Furthermore, an in-depth discussion of factors regarding sample preparation, sample properties, and instrumentation, which can affect p-IR analysis is provided. Additionally, attention is drawn to the potential impacts of analysis of biological samples with inherently polarized light sources, such as synchrotron light and quantum cascade lasers. The vast applications of p-IR for the determination of the structure and orientation of biological samples are given. In conclusion, with considerations to emerging instrumentation, findings by other techniques, and the shift of focus toward clinical applications, we speculate on the future directions of this methodology.

    Abstract

    Heating crystal samples of 9,10-diphenylanthracene endoperoxide (1) and its deuterated derivative (1-d10) to 200 °C led to singlet-oxygen chemiluminescence (CL) from the mixtures of the crystalline and molten states. To understand the events in the heated samples, the reactions of 1 and 1-d10 in crystals were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction measurements and thermal analyses. The used crystals of 1 and 1-d10 obtained from a mixture of ethyl acetate (EA) and n-hexane contained EA. Other crystals of 1 obtained by slow recrystallization with the same solvents had a solvent-free structure (form II) different from the reported one (form I). The results confirmed that the EA-containing crystals of 1 and 1-d10 were transformed to form II in two steps at 40–50 and 60–75 °C under heating at elevated temperature. Thus, the crystal samples had the form-II structure soon after heating to 200 °C. The behavior of the heated samples indicates that the crystal lattice inhibits the thermal reactivity of 1. Thus, the temperature for initiating the thermolytic reaction of 1 becomes higher than the melting point. An exploration of the potential energy surface (PES) obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations also supports that the deoxygenation of 1 is prevented by retaining the anthracene framework in the crystalline state. This study indicates that the method to use a CL-active compound is a powerful tool to analyze the reaction behavior in the crystalline state.

    In this perspective, we give an overview of several less explored structural and optical characterisation techniques useful for biomaterials. New insights into the structure of natural fibres such as spider silk can be gained with minimal sample preparation. Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) over a broad range of wavelengths (from X-ray to THz) provides information of the structure of the material at cor- respondingly different length scales (nm-to-mm). When the sample features, such as the alignment of certain fibres, cannot be characterised optically, polarisation analysis of the optical images can provide further information on feature alignment. The 3D complexity of biological samples necessitates that there be feature measure- ments and characterisation over a large range of length scales. We discuss the issue of characterising complex shapes by analysis of the link between the color and struc- ture of spider scales and silk. For example, it is shown that the green-blue color of a spider scale is dominated by the chitin slab’s Fabry-P ́erot type reflectivity rather than the surface nanostructure. The use of a chromaticity plot simplifies complex spectra and enables quantification of the apparent colors. All the experimental data presented herein are used to support the discussion on the structure-color link in the characterisation of materials.

    Microlens arrays (MLAs) which are increasingly popular micro-optical elements in compact integrated optical systems were fabricated by femtosecond direct laser write (fs-DLW) technique in the low-shrinkage SZ2080TM photoresist. High fidelity definition of 3D surfaces on IR transparent CaF2 substrates allowed to achieve ∼ 50% transmittance at chemical fingerprinting spectral region 2-5 μm wavelengths since MLAs were only ∼ 10 μm high corresponding to the numerical aperture of 0.3 (the lens height is comparable with the IR wavelength). To combine diffractive and refractive capabilities in miniaturised optical setup, a graphene oxide (GO) grating acting as a linear polariser was also fabricated by fs-DLW by ablation of a 1 μm-thick GO thin film. Such an ultra-thin GO polariser can be integrated with the fabricated MLA to add dispersion control at the focal plane. Pairs of MLAs and GO polarisers were characterised throughout visible-IR spectral window and numerical modeling was used to simulate their performance. Good match between experimental results of MLA focusing and simulations was achieved.

    Abstract

    The birefringence analysis of thin m SiO2 films deposited via evaporation at a glancing angle of to the normal on resist pillar arrays on Si and nanopatterned SiO2 substrates is carried out by spectral and color (red–green–blue [RGB]) imaging modes. Retardance and birefringence of the films deposited over flat and structured regions can be distinguished with only ≈1% difference between neighboring regions for the visible spectral range using RGB numerical analysis of images. The Michel‐Lévy color map is used for color rendering of birefringence to make quantitative measurements by numerical RGB color filtering. It is shown that by using at 530 nm waveplate inserted at angle to the cross polarizer‐analyzer setup, the range of changes in chromaticity xy‐coordinates expands approximately twice upon angular rotation of a birefringent sample. This facilitates a better signal‐to‐noise determination of birefringence. The proposed method with ‐plate color shifting can be directly used to determine birefringence from step‐like spectral features in reflection and transmission polariscopy. Direct measurement of birefringence () and retardance of SiO2 chevron film is carried out using Berek compensator as a benchmark.

    Abstract

    Liquid crystal elastomers that offer exceptional load-deformation response at low frequencies often require consideration of the mechanical anisotropy only along the two symmetry directions. However, emerging applications operating at high frequencies require all five true elastic constants. Here, we utilize Brillouin light spectroscopy to obtain the engineering moduli and probe the strain dependence of the elasticity anisotropy at gigahertz frequencies. The Young’s modulus anisotropy,E||/E~2.6, is unexpectedly lower than that measured by tensile testing, suggesting disparity between the local mesogenic orientation and the larger scale orientation of the network strands. Unprecedented is the robustness ofE||/Eto uniaxial load that it does not comply with continuously transformable director orientation observed in the tensile testing. Likewise, the heat conductivity is directional,κ||~3.0 withκ= 0.16 Wm−1K−1. Conceptually, this work reveals the different length scales involved in the thermoelastic anisotropy and provides insights for programming liquid crystal elastomers on-demand for high-frequency applications.

    It has been found that a fluorophore-linked adamantylideneadamantane 1,2-dioxetane derivative showed an isomeric difference in the reactivities of crystalline-state chemiluminescence (CL) under isothermal heating conditions, while there are still unsolved problems on the conditions for intracrystalline reactions. To confirm the suitable heating conditions for initiating crystalline-state CL reactions of the isomers, the CL reactions in their crystal samples heated at elevated temperature were investigated with monitoring of CL light emission and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) measurements together with a simultaneous measurement method of thermal diffusivity and light emission, to provide the information on suitable temperature range for the crystalline-state CL reactions and on the reactivities depending on open and closed conditions of the crystal samples. The newly developed simultaneous measurement method provides a methodology for a single crystal to analyze the relationship between a change of the thermophysical property of inside of the crystal and the progress of a crystalline-state CL reaction.

    Thermal diffusivity during stress-induced phase transition was examined and precisely determined in terephthalamide, an organosuperelastic soft crystal. A 14% maximum change in thermal diffusivity was realized in a superelastic phase transformation at a shear stress below 0.5 MPa. Thermal diffusivity measurements under the crystal deformation were achieved using microscale photothermal temperature-wave analysis. A maximum fivefold anisotropy was found in the thermal diffusivity between the c axis and other crystal axes. The results indicate the potential for developing practical thermal applications of organosuperelastic single crystals.

    To control thermal properties in nano- and micro scale is one of the important topics with regards to the phonon engineering. Recently, the mechanical molecular crystals have been developed, which have the potential applications of actuators and soft robots. Most of the crystal motions are induced by photoisomerization or mechanical stress.

    Thermal phase transition and the photothermal effect are considered as the underlying mechanism for the motions, such as bending, twisting, jumping, and rotating, etc., of the mechanical molecular crystals, called soft crystals. However, due to the lack of the measured data of heat transport properties such as thermal diffusivity or thermal conductivity of single crystals in micro volume size, the quantitative analysis of thermal phenomena in the molecular crystals has not yet been quantitatively analyzed. For example, the photo-thermally induced temperature rise produces the localized temperature distribution near the surface, and thermal diffusivity should be utilized to calculate the temperature distribution in the specimen.

    To overcome such situation, we propose a micro scale temperature wave analysis (micro-TWA) method to measure the thermal diffusivity of soft crystals in micro scale. (Figure 1) This method enables to measure the axial orientation in single crystals. Furthermore, coupled with the photo-thermal stimulation, the kinetic measurement of thermal diffusivity under the stress induced and photo induced field has been realized. Demonstration of the super elastic phase transition of soft crystal, 3,5- difluorobenzoic acid (3,5−F2bza) and terephthalamide(TPA) will be presented.

    This is a proposal of the new measurement method, because the experimental determination of the thermal diffusivity in micro scale of organic single crystals, under operating the deformation control, is still a challenge. The experimental validity is discussed with the theoretical analysis using the reference sample.

    Determination of refractive index of micro-disks of a calcinated
    ($1100^\circ$C in air) photo-resist SZ2080$^\mathrm{TM}$ was carried out using
    transmission and reflection spectroscopy. Interference fringes at specific
    wavenumbers/wavelengths were selected for determination of the optical
    thickness, hence, the refractive index when the thickness of micro-disks was
    measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Refractive index of disks of
    $\sim 6\pm 1~\mu$m thickness were determined at visible and IR (2.5-13~$\mu$m)
    spectral ranges and where $2.2\pm 0.2$ at visible and IR wavelengths.
    Peculiarities of optical characterisation of micro-optical structures are
    discussed in view of possible uncertainties in the definition of geometric
    parameters, shape and mass density redistribution.

    Four Stokes parameters (1852) define the polarisation state of light.
    Measured changes of the Stokes vector of light traversing an inhomogeneous
    sample are linked to the local anisotropies of absorption and refraction and
    are harnessed over an increasing range of applications in photonics, material,
    and space/earth observation. Several independent polarisation sensitive
    measurements are usually required for determination of the all four Stokes
    parameters, which makes such characterisation procedure time-consuming or
    requires complex setups. Here we introduce a single-snapshot approach to Stokes
    polarimetry in transmission by use of a 4-polarisation camera with the on-chip
    integrated polarisers. A quarter-waveplate was added in front of the sample and
    was illuminated by a linearly polarised light. This approach is demonstrated by
    measuring birefringence $\Delta n\sim 0.012$ of spider silk of only $\sim
    6~\mu$m-diameter using microscopy, however, due to its generic nature, it is
    transferable to other spectral ranges and imaging applications, e.g., imaging
    from a fast moving satellite or drone or monitoring fast changing events such
    as phase transitions.

  • Polarisation of THz synchrotron radiation: from its measurement to control

    Polarisation analysis of synchrotron THz radiation was carried out with a
    standard stretched polyethylene polariser and revealed that the linearly
    polarised (horizontal) component contributes up to 22 +/- 5% to the circular
    polarised synchrotron emission extracted by a gold-coated mirror with a
    horizontal slit inserted near a bending magnet edge. Comparison with
    theoretical predictions shows a qualitative match with dominance of the edge
    radiation. Grid polarisers 3D-printed out of commercial acrilic resin were
    tested for the polariser function and showed spectral regions where the
    dichroic ratio DR > 1 and < 1 implying importance of molecular and/or stress
    induced anisotropy. Metal-coated 3D-printed THz optical elements can find a
    range of applications in intensity and polarisation control of THz beams.

    The measurement system of thermo-spectroscopy has been developed to obtain infrared thermographical image and Infrared spectroscopic image in microscale simultaneously. In order to estimate the absolute temperature, the thermal emission signal intensity at each temperature and each concentration need to be measured prior to the experiments as a calibration procedure, since the emissivity is directly depending on the concentration and temperature of each component. The developed system was applied to analyze the temperature distribution in the kinetic thermal phenomena such as the phase transition of the heat storage materials and the chemical reaction system such as the styrene radical polymerization. The anisotropic thermal diffusivity in the in-plane direction of polymer composite was also estimated using the photo-thermal method.
