    Abstract

In a previous study, we developed a one-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model to predict the effect of transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) on mitral regurgitation (MR). The FSI model consists of a valve deformation model (VDM) for valve dynamics and a lumped parameter model (LPM) for blood flow. For the clinical application of in silico models, it is necessary to verify their credibility to secure the safety. Many studies have been conducted on LPMs, few studies have discussed the patient dependence related to the discretization error. Therefore, as the first step in the credibility assessment, we perform a verification study considering the patient dependence on the error of the LPM. The VDM is compared with the analytical solutions by beam problems, and the LPM is verified using the data of 35 patients. The patient-specific LPMs are generated by parameter optimization with information obtained from medical images, and the behavior of discretization error is examined for MR. As a result, it is confirmed that the absolute value of the error and the dependence of the error on the time step are patient dependent. However, the patient dependence is small in both cases, and the behavior agrees qualitatively with that assumed from a numerical scheme. It is also found that the error of the regurgitation is suppressed to 0.1 ml or less when the time step is 5 μs or less.
