We investigated the effects of detection angle and substrate in the analysis of the polarization properties of 1D dipole emission. Modifications were made to the analytical expression of dipole emission using transformation of coordinates. The consequences of different substrates (free space, dielectric substrate, and metallic substrate) and detection angle on the determination of dipole orientation were discussed. This work is helpful in analyzing the dipole emission signal, especially where an oblique detection angle is necessary such as in near-field optical spectroscopy based on scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

In this work, we were able to construct a nanospectroscopy system that can operate at 632.8 nm and 785 nm wavelengths and is housed in an environment control system to accommodate environment sensitive samples. The system was designed through the use of numerical simulations (FDTD and Mathematica) to obtain the optimal experimental parameters of the optics and probe (numerical aperture, laser illumination angle, tip tilt). A three-electrode electrochemical etching system was made to fabricate Au tips and a methodology was established to make these Au tips.

To maintain high stability of scanning probe microscope in room temperature, a compact and rigid SPM system based on a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) was designed and constructed. The new optics for illumination and detection were based on a fiber coupled system, which is useful for easy alignment. Beam splitters with varying reflectance and transmittance ratios were used to increase detection sensitivity. Through this environment control chamber, 3 kinds of environments in room temperature are possible: (1) ambient air, (2) nitrogen purged, and (3) low-vacuum (~10 Pa). With this multi-environment system, it will be easier to study samples that are sensitive to the local environment.
The unexpected result of this work is attaining subnanometer resolution of 0.6 nm using the developed environment controlled SPM system while conducting Raman experiments to test the detection efficiency of the system. From this result, it can also be assumed that the same high resolution that was observed for the electric field can also be observed when probing the magnetic field. Such high resolution is beneficial in studying nanosized metamaterial structures, especially at the edges of the structures where light tends to concentrate itself and generates hot spots.
