    We investigate the control mechanism of trap frequencies and determine the
    orientation of ion trap principal axes. The application of DC voltage to the
    ground electrodes, commonly employed to finely tune trap frequencies in ion
    traps, leads to the rotation of the trap principal axes. Analyzing the ion
    matter-wave interference signal enables us to determine the directions of the
    trap principal axes. Both the experiments and simulations reveal an
    avoided-crossing behavior resulting from the coupling between the trap radial
    axes. Additionally, simulations indicate that symmetric trap structures lack
    this coupling, suggesting that trap structure asymmetry causes coupling between
    the axes. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into ion traps for
    diverse applications in quantum science and technology.

    We developed an injection-locked Ti:sapphire laser at a wavelength of 671 nm where the fluorescence gain of the Ti:sapphire crystal is quite low. We obtained an output of more than 500 mW at a pump power of 10 W. The injection-locked lasing operates at a single-frequency and unidirectionally lasing with no intracavity optical components. The spectral property and the stability condition for the unidirectional lasing of the injection-locked Ti:sapphire laser are reported. The developed laser will produce the powerful light source required for the laser cooling of lithium atoms.

    In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a new method for measuring the trap frequency from the fluorescence dynamics of an ion, initiated using fast trap-center displacement. Here, we observe the coherently excited motion of an ion in a harmonic trap using time-resolved fluorescence detection. Furthermore, Fourier analysis of the ion fluorescence signal was used to determine the trap frequency of an ion with high precision and reproducibility. The results show that our proposed method can be an alternative way to determine trap frequencies in an ion trap experiment.

    We report an experimental study of ultracold collisions between atomic ions and neutral atoms. The atom-ion interactions in a hybrid trap, where a RF Paul trap and an optical dipole trap are combined, are investigated. We characterized the collisional properties of elastic and inelastic collisions between Ca+ ions and Li atoms by determining the cross sections in a milli kelvin temperature.

    本研究は冷却単一原子イオンによる中性原子の状態操作・検出手法の開発を目指すものである。今年度は主に中性原子気体中の単一イオンの温度変化と中性原子と原子イオン間の非弾性散乱過程のスピン依存性の2点について集中的に研究を行い、成果が得られた。
    昨年度までにプローブヘッドとなるカルシウムイオンに対し、サイドバンド冷却を実装し、原子気体の高解像度でプローブが可能となる領域に冷却したが、本年度は原子気体との衝突による温度変化の詳細を測定した。数ケルビン程度の領域で冷却原子気体と混合したカルシウムイオンが中性原子気体の密度に依存して冷却される振る舞いを観測できた。これは中性原子の状態を検出する際にプローブの精度が悪化しないことを示しており、本研究における重要なマイルストーンである。加えて、中性原子気体によるイオンの冷却手法の開発という観点からも重要な成果である。以上の内容を国際誌にて発表した。
    また、本研究では中性原子-イオン間の非弾性散乱過程におけるスピン依存性に関する実験を行った。昨年度までに中性リチウム原子とカルシウムイオン間における電荷交換散乱と状態変化散乱(クエンチ散乱)の二種類の非弾性散乱過程が観測された。理論研究者との共同研究によりこの二つの散乱過程がスピン状態の違いによって異なる反応経路をたどって起こることが明らかになった。そこでレーザー光を用いて中性原子、イオンのスピン状態を選別し、両者を混合して電荷交換散乱を観測することに成功した。スピン状態を含めた単一の状態を実験者が任意に選択して反応を観測する手法の開発は、極低温における化学反応過程の観測における重要ステップと言える。
