本研究は、イギリスの小説家ジェイン・オースティン（1775-1816) の作品における病気の表象に注目し、小説というジャンルの特質を明らかにすることを目的としている。オースティンの作品が同時代の作家から影響を受けていたことは、多くの批評によって指摘されている。中でもサミュエル・リチャードソン（1689-1761）、フランシス・バーニー（1752-1840）の作品を彼女は好んだと言われている。両者の作品を始めとした当時の小説は、ヒロインを美徳の鑑として造形する傾向にあった。これらの作家が模範的なヒロイン再生産し続けた理由の一つとして、小説が若い読者に与える悪影響を恐れた社会の要請を彼らが汲んだことが挙げられるが、その意味でそのような小説は必ずしもリアリズムの美学に則っていなかった。つまり、世界をリアルに描くことよりも、読者に教訓を与えることがしばしば優先されていた。対して、オースティンの作品の登場人物は、常に完璧にふるまうわけではない。本研究では特に病気の表象を出発点にして、オースティンの小説の焦点が、教訓的であることよりもリアリズムにあると示すことを目的とした。病気の表象において、登場人物の自己中心性が示されるだけでなく、グロテスクなほどリアルで日常的な描写が混在しているからである。特に今年度は、オースティンの作品のリアリズムの様相をより深く探るために、当時流行したウォルター・スコット（1771-1832）などによる歴史小説とも比較した。歴史は小説よりもリアルなジャンルだと考えられていたからだ。日常の風景を描くオースティンと歴史的出来事を描くスコットは、その作風の違いから、正反対の作家と見なされてきたが、リアルさの定義を再考することで、この古びた二項対立を解体できるのではないかと考えている。
