The objective of present study is to present solution to determine the stress and displacement fields around an interface edge of a joint formed by quarter planes in which materials behaves as an elastic and a power-law hardening material. J2-deformation plasticity theory under plane strain condition is assumed for the power-law hardening material. Both the balance of force and the continuity of displacements are satisfied on the interface iteratively. The stress fields are found to be singular with the type of rλi -1 singularity from the i-th order approximation, where r is the radial distance from the interface. The power of r in the stress equation depends on the hardening exponent n. (i +1) or more singular terms exist in the i-th order approximation for n < (i +1)/i .As n is increased the absolute value of the i-th order of singularity, |λi-1| ,tends to be decreased to zero when λi-1<0.

  • Effect of Plastic Strain Range on Prediction of the Onset of Crack Growth for Low-Cycle Fatigue of SUS316NG Studied using Ultrasonic Back-Reflection

Strain range controlled low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted using ultrasonic method in order to investigate the effect of plastic strain range on the remaining life of austenitic stainless steel SUS316NG before the onset of crack growth in its early stages of fatigue. It was found that the decrease in ultrasonic back-reflection intensity from the surface of the material, caused by the increase in average dislocation density with localized plastic deformation at persistent slip bands (PSBs), starts earlier with increase in the plastic strain range. The amount of decrease in ultrasonic back-reflection before the onset of crack growth increases for larger plastic strain range. The difference in the cumulative plastic strains at the onset of crack growth and at the onset of decrease in the ultrasonic back-reflection remained constant over the range of tested plastic strain. This result can be used to predict the remaining life before the onset of crack growth within the plastic strain range used in this study. In addition, we present and evaluate another method to predict damage evolution involving ultrasound attenuation caused by PSBs.

The objective of present study is to develop an evaluation method of low cycle fatigue crack growth from PSBs of stainless steels using ultrasonic back reflected wave. Behavior of back reflection intensity change from the surface due to fatiguing was measured. It was found that the decrease of back reflection intensity depends on the plastic strain range when the ranges are kept constant. The onset of crack growth can be predicted in the load variation condition by the linearly cumulative plastic strain and the PSB damage model proposed.

In this research, in-plane impact behaviors of the honeycomb structures randomly filled into some cells with stiff inclusions were analyzed by finite element (FE) analysis. Effect of random arrangement of inclusions on deformation processes and in-plane impact behavior of honeycomb structure was considered. During deformation processes of the models, growth of shear bands were disturbed by inclusions and cell region surrounded by inclusions did not deformed. Average stress increased and densification strain decreased with increasing fraction of inclusions. The honeycomb with 50% cells filled by the inclusions could not be deformed. Some models below 25% fraction of inclusions had higher absorbed energy than that of model with no inclusion and the others show lower ones.

In the present study, we investigated the effect of adding a high molecular weight monomer to one with low molecular weight on the fracture toughness of epoxy resin in terms of cross-link density and heterogeneity. To characterize the cross-link density and heterogeneity, we evaluated the glass transition temperature, T_g, and fragility, m, from thermo-viscoelastic properties. To confirm the microstructure heterogeneity in the epoxy resins, we analyzed roughness of fracture surfaces with atomic force microscope. Over the range from 0 to 30wt% high molecular weight monomer used in the present work, we found that it induced lower cross-link density (lower T_g) and made epoxy resin more heterogeneous (lower m), and this resulted in higher K_<IC>. This study revealed that both T_g and m are effective for characterizing material in relation to the fracture toughness of the blended epoxy resins.

In this paper, heterogeneity effect on mechanical properties was investigated for epoxy resin blended by two monomers: Epikote 828 and Epikote 1001, with several mixture ratios. Epikote 828 was blended with Epikote 1001 before curing on purpose to induce heterogeneity in epoxy resin. In order to characterize degrees of the cross linking and heterogeneity in the resin, the glass transition temperature and the fragility were determined from thermoviscoelastic properties. Comparing with the dynamic storage modulus E' and the fracture toughness, G_<IG>, it was clarified that high heterogeneity in the epoxy resin affected high E' and low G_<IC> due to the mobility of the resin. The fragility is efficient parameter to characterize heterogeneity related to mechanical properties.

The effect of two-silica-particle compositions on the thermo-viscoelastic properties of epoxy composites was studied according to Lewis and Nielsen's mixture law and particle packing model. The composite specimens varied with different compositions of two-silica-particle (240nm and 1.56μm) were prepared at the constant volume fraction, 0.30. The thermo-viscoelastic properties for neat epoxy and the composites were measured in the temperature ranges from 123K to 523K and compared to theoretical results according to Lewis and Nielsen's law with the maximum packing fraction of particles, φ_<max> of Ouchiyama and Tanaka's model. Consequently, thermo-viscoelastic properties of two silica particulates filled epoxy composites were definitely dependent on maximum packing fraction of particles below glass transition temperature T_g, and on mobility of matrix resin above T_g.

We studied approximate analysis of mechanical properties for porous polypropylene plate considering inhomogeneous distribution of cells due to manufacturing process. In the analysis, porous plate was modeled on laminate plate theory by stacking different layers with uniform porosity. Tensile, compression and bending static tests were conducted to measure elastic modulus and plateau stress. Numerical results were confirmed to be valid, compared with experimental results. Inhomogeneous distribution of porosity was found to be important for mechanical behavior. We tried to predict behavior of the porous material subjected to impulsive compression according to time-temperature equivalent principle. The prediction agreed with experimental results of impact tests.

The effects of particle size on fracture behavior of epoxy resin filled by spherical silica particles were studied. The epoxy resin was reinforced with silica particles having different mean sizes (1.56μm and 0.24μm) under different mixture ratios of small and large particles with the same volume fraction, 0.30. The three point bending test was conducted to measure fracture toughness. Consequently, the fracture toughness for above 70% of smaller particles was nearly two and half times higher than that of pure epoxy and two times for that of 100% larger particles, respectively.

We experimentally studied effect of ribs on impact energy absorption of a thin-walled cylinder. Several kinds of the specimens with different intervals and numbers of ribs were made of two kinds of aluminum alloys. The drop weight test was conducted to examine relations between impact force and deformation of the specimens. It was found that the crushing modes were strongly dependent on diameter and thickness of a specimen, and distance between ribs. Axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric crushing modes occurred for short distance and for long distance, respectively. The mean crushing force for the axisymmetric mode was larger than one for non-axisymmetric mode. It was clarified that the crushing behavior in an interval of rib was independent of one in other interval. Therefore, a cylinder with a lot of short interval ribs has high ability for impact energy absorption.

In this study, we discussed the fracture criterion for mixed mode of the epoxy resin at the room temperature. We conducted the three- and four-point bending tests to determine the fracture toughness under mixed mode loading and compared the experimental results with three theoretical fracture criteria: maximum hoop stress theory, minimum strain density theory, and maximum energy release theory. At lower mode mixity, namely closer to mode I, the fracture envelope and the crack initiation angle could be roughly predicted by the theoretical criteria. However, at higher mode mixity, especially at the vicinity of mode II, the fracture envelope followed neither theoretical nor empirical criteria, which could be due to the effect of thermo-viscoelastic relaxation phenomena, even when the crack initiation angle followed the maximum hoop stress criterion.

In this study, we discussed compressive behaviors of a paper and paper coated by polyethylene resin experimentally. The initial thickness of each paper under stress of 0.018 MPa was largely scattered in comparison with the basis weight, although the results according to ISO standard (under compression of 0.1MPa) were. The thickness was immediately decreased for low compressive stress, since gap between fibers and in fibers collapsed. After that, the variation of the thickness for higher compression was small due to compression of fibers. We found that the resin-coat layers did not have little effect on compressive stiffness (variation of compressive stress/variation of thickness)

In the present study, we discuss the curing state effect of the epoxy resin (DGEBA) on the temperature-time dependence of the fracture toughness. The glass transition temperature and the fragility parameter are applied in order to represent the curing state of the epoxy resins post-cured under various conditions. It is confirmed, first, that the time-temperature equivalent principle is applicable to the fracture toughness. Then we compare the master curves of the specimens which have the same glass transition temperature and the different fragility. When temperature increases, their master curves of the fracture toughness near the glass transition temperature. The fracture toughness of the specimen with lower fragility increases from lower temperature, but the brittle-ductile temperature is approximately the same regardless the fragility. The result shows these two parameters can be very useful to estimate the time-temperature dependence of fracture toughness of the epoxy resin.

In this study, we predict the fracture of fire extinguishing equipment by analyzing the notch root stress using FEM at the time of a collision and the time of throwing. The objective of the present study is to design an optimum notch shape which gives breakable equipment structure at the time of collision, not to be fractured at the time of throwing.

The purpose of this study attempts to clarify a variation of oxygen non-stoichiometry in LSCF under axial compression. An electrochemical cell consisting of YSZ (yttria stabilized zirconia)/LSCF/YSZ with glass sealing is prepared, which is examined using oxygen coulometric titration. The change in oxygen nonstdichiomery obtained in this experiment wa by two order smaller than the literature value. Theoxygen nonstoichiometry increases with the applied stress, wich could be due to an enlargement of effective contact area between YSZ/LSCF.

Meanwhile, LSCF in practical use involves a thermal and chemical strain-stress due to temperature and oxygen partial pressure changes; therefore, it is concerned influence of the ionic conductivity. In the present work, polarization-depolarization tests of 8YSZ/LSCF/8YSZ cell under uniaxial compression loading were conducted and effects of stress on the ion-conducting were investigated. Although a clear correlation was not obtained for load stress dependency of the depolarization curve and chemical diffusion coefficient, the oxygen-ion conductivity/electronic transport number was found to increase as the applied stress increases.

Lanthanum-based perovskites has emerged to be a promising candidate as cathode for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and as oxygen separation membrane. With regard to mechanical properties, anomalous behavior, known as ferroelasticity, has been reported in recent years. Systematical and experimental investigation relates to ferroelastic material has not been conducted to date. In the present study, we conducted X-ray diffraction (XRD), observing crystal surface with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and uniaxial compression test in room temperature to discover relation between lanthanum-based perovskites and addition ion. Both rhombohedral crystal and orthorhombic crystal perovskites showed ferroelasticity, but orthorhombic crystal showed slightly. With regard to rhombohedral crystal perovskites, when crystal lattice distortion (cubic based) is large, critical stress is higher value, residual strain is large.

A new method is proposed to detect a tilted/deflected planar flaw on the back surface of a plate using the interference of ultrasonic waves. Parameters for flaw evaluation are developed and examined through experimental results for artificial flaws. The distingwish of the tilted/deflected flaw is estimated by parameter, which shows the difference in the first minimum amplitude of the interference fringe. The effect of tilt angle of the flaw on parameter, which indicates the amount of asymmetry of the interference fringe along the direction normal to the flaw, is investigated. Tilted angle larger than 10 degree can be identified from the deflected flaws using the present method with a tilt angle of from the normal direction of the inspection surface.

Therefore, the stress effect on the separation performance has been an issue of concern. In this study, we investigate d the electrical conductivity of BSCF under compressive loadings at various temperatures. It was found that the electrical conductivity increases with increasing the stress, which can be attributed to piezoresistivity. The piezoresistive effect at room temperature was smaller (〜0.6%) than compared to the ones at the elevated temperatures (〜1.5%), which might be related to the the elastic modulus.

The size of the segregation particle increases with increasing the annealing time, whereas its number has no clear dependence on the annealing time. The particle size is larger but the number is smaller in the sample annealed under compression than in the one annealed without compression, which could be attributed to grain-boundary sliding and stress-enhanced Sr-diffusion aiding high-temperature creep deformation.

The crack grows normal to the interface between the metal matrix composite (MMC) and the aluminum alloy. The crack growth rate under a constant stress intensity factor range condition showed deceleration with crack growth in MMC. The residual stresses due to casting of the layered material of MMC and aluminum alloy were measured using the strain release method. The deceleration of crack growth rate can be attributed to the compressive residual stress in MMC. The mechanical effect of residual stress on the stress intensity factor of a crack normal to the MMC/aluminum alloy interface is evaluated based on the principle of superposition.

The directional oxygen diffusion in 4YSZ and 8YSZ is facilitated in the tensile direction and deteriorated in the compressive direction without changing the total diffusion property, which could be caused by the elastic recovery force. For 14YSZ, on the other hand, the oxygen diffusion remains unchanged regardless of the stress, probably due to the high yttria concentration. The tensile stress component in the <100> direction, therefore, could facilitate the oxygen migration in ytfxia-stabilized zirconia with the lower yttria concentrations.

The objective of present study is to develop an evaluation method of low cycle fatigue damage of two kinds of steel using ultrasonic back reflected wave. Anisotropy of back reflection intensity from the surface due to prefer direction of small fatigue cracking was measured. It was found that the anisotropy of back reflection intensity reflects the damage accumulation through the crack density developed by low cycle fatigue loadings.

Simultaneous measurement of the nanoprobe indentation force and the photoluminescence of InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots is successfully achieved by introducing a specially designed loadcell into the nanoprobe indentation system. By using this improved system, the emission properties of self-assembled InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) under cylindrical nanoprobe indentation are investigated under low temperature and high vacuum conditions. Energy shifts as large as 100 meV induced by cylindrical nanoprobe indentation are observed in the QDs. Further, the increase in the emission energy of the QDs varies from peak to peak under the same indentation force. In order to clarify this mechanism, simulations are carried out based on a three-dimensional fmite element and six-band strain-dependent k*p Hamiltonian. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental ones. The results of the cylindrical nanoprobe indentation experiments show that the effect of nanoprobe shape on indentation-photoluminescence characteristics is significant.

In this study the hybrid effect on the orientation dependence of the composite strength of an aluminum cast alloy reinforced by AL_2O_3 whiskers and SiC particles is studied experimentally and numerically. The monotonic strength is higher when the hybrid MMCs is subjected to the external load parallel to the random whisker orientation in plane than those when the load is perpendicular to the whisker orientation. The whisker orientation dependence of composite strength in the hybrid composite is weaker than the one in the whisker reinforced composite. On the fracture surface of the specimen loaded along parallel direction to the random whisker orientation in plane broken whiskers are the majority while a lot of de-bonded interfaces between whisker and matrix are observed on the fracture surface of the specimen loaded along perpendicular direction to whisker orientation. To characterize the hybrid effect on the whisker orientation dependence of composite strength, a three-dimensional hybrid composite unit cell model including whiskers and particles is developed using finite element method.

Solid-oxide fuel cells(SOFC) are expected to be one of the most effective and clean energy sources because of their highest efficiency and simple system, SOFC is consisted of three layered structures: anode, electrolyte and cathode. In order to guarantee their long-term durability, it is important to comprehend stress state in the cell. In this study, the residual stress is evaluated by using X-ray diffraction and also a method of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS). The residual stress in the electrolyte of the anode-supported cell measured by X-ray diffraction was a compressive stress of about 675MPa. Based on the results, the residual stress distribution in the cell was simulated using the finite element method, followed by the modal analysis. The natural frequency of the cell decreased by 0.84 % when the simulated compressive stress in the electrolyte increased to about 526 MPa, which could suggest a validity of the RUS for evaluating the residual stress in the cell.

Layered metal materials which consist of more than two kinds of metals can have great properties by taking advantage of good property of each metal material. The layered metal materials, however, could include various defects at the interface such as delamination and weak interface stiffness, which can be introduced during rolling and thermal treatment processes. The interface defects could accordingly deteriorate the properties of layered metal materials. Thus, it is important to non-destructively evaluate the interface property before its practical application. In this study, by using a method of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS), the delamination and the stiffness at interface between two copper sheets are evaluated. The modal analysis is conducted by the finite element method and the resonant frequency is measured by the RUS system.

The objective of present study is to develop an evaluation method of low cycle fatigue crack growth from PSBs of stainless steels using ultrasonic back reflected wave. Behavior of back reflection intensity change from the surface due to fatiguing was measured. It was found that the back reflection intensity decreased linearly before the start of fatigue crack growth from PSBs as the number of cyclic loads was increased. The linearly approximated relationship can predict the remaining life to start crack growth conservatively.

In this study, RUS(resonant ultrasound spectroscopy) is suggested as a measurement method of residual stress in spherical specimens. At first, the model of spherical specimen is made for FEM and natural frequency of spherical specimen is calculated due to use this FEM model. Second, resonant frequency of spherical specimen is measured for RUS measurement system that consists of two transducers, spectrum-analyzer, and load cell. RUS is the measurement system due to compare calculated natural frequency for FEM with measured resonant frequency for experiment. As these results, calculated natural frequency is similar change to measured resonant frequency when residual stress is changed. So, RUS can be measured residual stress.

We investigated the mode II fracture toughness with time and temperature dependence of the bisphenol A-type of epoxy resin. We performed an asymmetric four-point bending test under various conditions of temperature and displacement rate. We found that the mode II fracture toughness strongly depended on the displacement rate and the temperature, even at the room temperature. Moreover, it was governed by the time-temperature equivalence principle in regard to the fracture time. The time-temperature dependency of the mode II fracture toughness was similar to that of the loss modulus E" and the transition of brittle to ductile fractures occurred nearly simultaneously when E" peaked

We review recent researches about relationship between the microstructure and fracture toughness of an epoxy resin and its composite, especially about our works. The qualification method on the microstructure of the resin is proposed, focusing on the degree of crosslinking and heterogeneity. The method uses two parameters; the glass transition temperature and fragility, which are derived from thermo-viscoelasticity measurement.<BR>We discuss the effect of the microstructure on the mode I fracture toughness including its time and temperature dependence, using these two parameters. Also is discussed the fracture toughness of the epoxy composite filled with silica particulates. The experimental results and discussion of the mode II and the mixed mode I/II fracture toughness are briefly described.

The effect of transverse impact on buckling behavior of a column under axial impact loading is numerically investigated by finite element analysis. A column under an axial impact was subjected to a transverse impact to reduce its structural stiffness instantaneously. The transverse impact generates buckling with low critical load and improves energy absorption. The transverse impact has a significant effect on inducing plastic buckling. The results show that the transverse impact applied almost simultaneously with axial impact gives highest energy absorption. The simulation results prove the experimental ones qualitatively and show that the energy absorption of column is improved without reducing column stiffness beforehand.

This study developed the novel self-pulverisation oxides and elucidated the self-pulverisation mechanism. The results based on XRD, SEM, and EDX demonstrated that a small amount of excessive LaCoO3 mixed in oxides hydroxylates with a significant volume expansion, eventually causing the pulverisation of oxides. The local stress distribution and critical crack length around excessive LaCoO3 particles are estimated. Various conventional ceramics were successfully pulverised by controlling the excessive amount of LaCoO3 and the atmosphere.

This research is basic/applied research aiming to dramatically improve performance, durability and reliability by creating fuel cells and secondary batteries from ceramics and metals. The obstacle to the commercialization of solid state batteries is due to the fact that they are mainly composed of ceramic members with extremely low mechanical reliability. Therefore, in this research, we have succeeded in developing a battery that combines performance, durability, and reliability by combining some of the battery components with a metal having a nano-porous structure. In addition, we succeeded in developing the world's first non-destructive evaluation method that can quickly evaluate the stability of the interface structure.

Surface segregation in ionic solids is one of the main causes of degradation of ionic devices such as solid oxide fuel cell. The present study investigated the surface segregation phenomenon in La-Sr-Co-Fe-O (LSCF) subjected to mechanical stress. The results suggested that mechanical stress, especially compressive stress, which can aid high temperature creep deformation without grain boundary sliding, could suppress surface segregation in LSCF.

The present study investigated ferroelasticity and ionic conductivity of mixed ionic-electronic conductive perovskite oxides. The present experimental and analytical results elucidated the ferroelastic mechanical behaviours of various lanthanum-based perovskite oxides such as LaCoO3-d in a wide range of temperature. Additionally, new techniques for evaluating the oxygen deficiency and ionic conductivity of these materials under uniaxial compression at elevated temperature was established. The result suggests the effect of compressive stress on the deficiency and conductivity.

An analytical method to predict strain fields in multi-layer quantum dots solar cells during its fabrication processes. The strain field due to material combination, interface direction, external strain are given using the developed methods. The change in energy bands due to strain is described through combination of strain components. An interface elasticity between the dot material and matrix material is considered to predict the strain field near the dot-matrix interface and its influence is evaluated. A continum mechanical theory to include the interfacial elasticity is applied to the quantum dot problem.

An improvement in the estimation of the location of embedded InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) by using a domed-apex probe to perform the low- temperature (10 K) photoluminescence (PL) measurement during a nanoprobe scan was established. Fine PL peak from individual QDs was enhanced with the nanoprobe-induced strain. Tracing the PL emissions of single QD with the movement of the probe position in the scan, the locations of some of observed QDs were obtained directly from the scan results, at where the PL peak energies of those QDs achieved maximum values.

Effect of bi-dispersing spherical silica particles on mechanical properties of epoxy composites were investigated experimentally and also analyzed using model of particle dispersion theoretically. The materials of specimens used in this study were bisphenol A-type epoxy composites reinforced by different spherical silica particles; nano-silica particle with 240 nm in diameter and micro-silica particle with 1. 56 mm in diameter. The specimens had different particle size compositions. We measured mechanical properties, namely thermo-viscoelasticity and fracture toughness, of the composites. The viscoelastic properties of the composites in glassy state were independent of particle size and governed by total volume fraction of the particles. The properties in rubbery state were found to have dependency on particle size due to increasing particle mobility. Distance between randomly-distributed particles for each composite was analyzed numerically by Bansal and Ardell's statistics method. The nearest surface distance of randomly-distributed particles is dependent on the volume fraction of the particles and proportional to its diameter. Then, based on similar particle distribution for each composite having the same volume fraction of the particles, we constructed theoretical model and considered mixture law of fracture toughness for single-particle dispersed composite. We found that the fracture toughness of the composites was approximately linear with respect to the reciprocal of the product of (i) the square root of the mean distance between the particle surfaces, and (ii) the normalized mean stress in the matrix given by the equivalent inclusion method. The theoretical result agreed well with the experimental results. However the mixture law of fracture toughness included the unknown parameter which was predicted to be related to interaction between particle and cxosslink structure of polymer matrix. Therefore, we clarified that the thermo-viscoelastic properties of particles bi-dispersed composites in glassy state are determined only by total volume fraction of the particles and the fracture toughness are done by distribution of particle size and the volume fraction. Based on this conclusion, we obtained that thermo-viscoelastic and fracture properties of the composite can be tailored independently.
