The modal properties and the free vibration behavior accompanied with uplift motion are examined in vertical hybrid buildings with wooden upper part and RC lower part. Eigenvalue analysis is conducted to derive the uplifting modes. Using these modes, free vibration during an uplift excursion is simulated by modal analysis. In the hybrid buildings, it was clarified that the effective mass ratio for third- and fourth- modes and the base shear coefficients at the static equilibrium position become larger than those of a uniform structure, making it difficult to achieve the response reduction effect due to uplift.

In the seismic design of secondary systems (SS) such as nonstructural components, the effect of torsional vibration of structural frames is not explicitly considered. Although torsional vibration may increase the inertia forces of SS, the degree of amplification and governing parameters have not been sufficiently clarified yet. In this paper, floor response spectra are investigated for single-story asymmetric buildings to understand the effect of torsion on SS. The results show that the maximum value of floor response spectrum becomes larger than that without the effect of torsion as the eccentricity ratio increases. But when the eccentricity ratio exceeds 0.1, the maximum value is almost constant at about 1.2 times larger than that without eccentricity.

In the seismic design of nonstructural components, inertial forces and relative displacements are usually considered separately. But the two factors should be appropriately combined in some cases of connecting conditions to the structural frames. In this paper, the correlation coefficients between the story drifts of structural frames and the displacements of secondary systems are investigated in linear seismic responses. An approximate evaluation formula for multistory buildings is presented and validated through response history analysis. It is shown that the correlations are relatively high in the range of periods shorter than the first natural periods of structural frames.

In our previous studies, seismic forces for secondary systems (SS) such as nonstructural components are investigated using light-weight bending-beam models with boundary condition (BC) of both pin-supported ends or of both fixed ends. In this paper, seismic forces for SS modeled as beams with another BC of one fixed end and the other pin-supported end are examined. Structural frames and SS are assumed to be linear. A modal analysis method for them is derived. The results with different BCs are compared and clarify the effect of BCs on seismic forces for SS.

1. Introduction
In the seismic design of secondary systems (SS) such as nonstructural components, inertial and relative displacement effects are usually considered independently. But the reason for this independence is not clarified enough. In past researches, response spectrum methods have been proposed to analyze three-dimensional piping. Those methods are too complicated to apply for the seismic design of SS in general buildings. It seems useful to obtain basic knowledge for the practical design of SS by studying both effects with a simple typical model.
In this paper, seismic responses due to both effects are studied for SS modeled as light-weight bending beams fixed to the upper and lower floors in a multistory building through response history analysis.
2. Mathematical model and analysis method
Lumped-mass shear-type models and uniform bending-beam models are used for structural frames and SS respectively. The boundary conditions of SS are pin-ends and fixed-ends. The former condition is for comparison and has no effect of relative displacement. Structural frames and SS are assumed to be linear.

A modal analysis method is derived. For inertial effect, responses of modes of structural frames are used as inputs to those of SS.
3. Response histories and peak sectional forces
A three-story model is used as a structural frame. The first natural period is set to be 0.6 sec. except for some cases, while those for SS with pin-ends and fixed-ends are set to be 0.4 and 0.176 sec. respectively for almost cases. Ground motion to the structural frame is an artificial one with a response spectrum corresponding to the lower seismic design level in Japan.
Response histories are shown to confirm the characteristics of responses of SS and phases of effects of inertia and relative displacements. Peak sectional forces along the height of SS are shown. Variations in those peak values due to the change of the natural period of structural frame and SS are shown in spectral form.
4. Conclusion
The results of this paper are summarized as follows.
(1) A modal analysis method has been derived.
(2) Characteristics of the responses of SS such as pseudo-static responses have been confirmed.
(3) The primary mode of SS is dominant in responses by inertial effects.
(4) Even if the natural frequency of SS is increased by changing the boundary condition from pin-ends to fixed-ends, it may be impossible to decrease seismic responses due to the effect of relative displacements.
(5) Because forces due to the effects of inertia and relative displacement are often in-phase, both effects should be appropriately combined in design.
(6) Seismic responses of SS increase with increase or decrease its natural frequency.
(7) While seismic responses of SS with pin-ends decreases as the natural frequency of the structural frame decreases, those with fixed-ends increase.

In regards to seismic response of secondary systems, maximum floor acceleration and floor response spectrum have been studied by many researchers. But characteristics of seismic torsional responses of secondary systems have not been clarified yet. In this paper, seismic torsional responses of secondary systems are investigated through response history analysis. A structural frame for secondary systems is assumed to be linear without irregularity. Secondary systems are also assumed to be linear but with plan irregularity. Characteristics of seismic torsional responses of secondary systems are clarified comparing with those of primary systems.

Although the structural system was slightly damaged, damage to the nonstructural components could lead to the complete or partial closure of buildings. Lessons learned from recent earthquakes indicate that protecting the nonstructural components is very important for structural engineers to realize functional continuity of buildings after earthquakes. Especially from the damage of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, a number of research has been conducted to investigate the structural behavior and damage mechanisms of ceilings as non-structural components. And based on the research, seismic design procedures were established to avoid the fall of ceilings in order to save human life and to keep functional continuity. On the other hand, a reconnaissance of recent earthquakes reported that light-gauge steel (LGS) stud partition walls were also damaged, and its damage led to the complete or partial closure of buildings. Following the previous research project for ceilings, a number of research on LGS partition wall has to be conducted to reduce the seismic damage to the walls.

In this research, a systematic experimental program for investigating the structural behavior and damage mechanism of LGS partition walls will be conducted to establish the seismic design procedure. As the first step, element tests of stud-to-track connections were conducted to evaluate the ultimate strength. The main test parameters are the length of track, the clearance between track and stud, the pitch of bolts which connect the track to the reaction jig, and the number and spacing of studs. Here, a clearance of 10mm is employed at the top side of stud for workability on construction site. Power actuated fasteners are widely used for tracks to concrete slab connections, and a distance around 900mm is recommended for a pitch of the fasteners in standard specification of construction work.

The test results can be summarized as follows:(1) the structural behavior of stud-to-track connection is dominated by the out-of-plane bending of one-side flange plate of track. Therefore, effects of cyclic loadings on ultimate strength are few; (2) the strength is affected by the length of track and inversely proportional to the clearance between track and stud: (3) the total strength of multiple studs is not in proportional to the number of studs because the multiple studs share the effective width for strength evaluation; (4) a strength evaluation model has been established from the test results.

It is important to evaluate the modal correlation coefficient when the responses to be combined are from modes with closely spaced frequencies. In these cases, the complete quadratic combination (CQC) rule is used instead of the square root of the sum of the squares(SRSS). To evaluate the value of the modal correlation coefficient, it was evaluated as a CQC factor. However, an exception to this approach arises when the modal correlation coefficient in secondary systems is evaluated. When the modal correlation coefficient in secondary systems was evaluated, it was found that the tendency of the modal correlation coefficient in the primary and secondary systems analyzed by time history response was different, with the latter being greater than the former for the modal correlation coefficient when the natural period in the primary system is longer than that in secondary system. Other studies have proposed formulas for the modal correlation coefficient in a primary system. This study aims to propose a formula for the modal correlation coefficient in secondary systems based on primary system formulas reported in these previous studies. Furthermore, the modal correlation coefficient in the secondary system was examined based on our proposed formula.
The conclusions of this study are summarized as follows:
1) Comparing of the modal correlation coefficient in secondary systems in single degree of freedom with that in multi-degrees-of-freedom, the tendencies were found to be different. Moreover, they were particularly different from the secondary and tertiary natural periods in multi-degrees-of-freedom.
2) The modal correlation coefficient in multi-degrees-of-freedom is expressed as the sum of the products of a participation vector of primary systems, the Fourier amplitude of ground motion and a factor of the modal correlation coefficient in single-degree-of-freedom primary systems. Additionally, the modal correlation coefficient in the secondary systems calculated by Eq. 10 can be evaluated by adding components around three-order modes.
3) It is confirmed that CQC factors to combine peak values nearly correspond to correlation coefficient not only in primary systems but also in secondary systems.

Coupon tension tests using steel plate specimens with full thickness more than width were conducted to obtain the relation between uniform elongation and rupture elongation. Two types of steel materials (SA440, H-SA700) were selected and three types of coupon tension specimen (JIS No.1A, No.5, and No.12A) were used for the tests. After showing characteristic results of thick specimens, the applicability of a prediction formula for the relation proposed by the authors is investigated. It is clarified that the rupture elongation values obtained from the proposed formula are almost equal to or larger than those of the corresponding test results.

<p>In general, it is difficult to calculate floor accelerations of main frames in non-linear seismic responses for seismic design of non-structural components. A formula to calculate them without time history analysis and eigenvalue analysis has been proposed by authors. Based on the formula, this paper verifies applicability of the formula to real building models and proposes a practical way of setting strength factor in the formula. By comparing the results by time history analysis, it is confirmed that the formula gives good estimation for floor accelerations.</p>

<p>In this report, a direct estimation method is proposed for non-linear floor response spectrum in RC buildings with a degrading hysteretic loop based on the Takeda model. The method uses the concept of linear modal analysis with empirical coefficients and formulas characterized for the RC buildings. A shift of the resonance region, which is negligible for S buildings with bi-linear hysteresis, is also empirically evaluated for the first mode. Amplification factors of floor responses for the multi story RC buildings are verified by compared with those by nonlinear time history response analyses using number of earthquake input motions.</p>

According to the new standard for specified ceiling, it is recommended to separate adjacent ceiling zones at step parts. In specified ceilings, conventional continuous step parts may not be damaged because of small deformations by bracings, but the requirements are not clear. In this report, static loading tests are conducted to clarify mechanical properties of step parts of steel furring suspended ceiling systems. The required displacements are calculated by numerical analysis and compared with the experimental results. Integration of the step part can be allowable by properly selecting combination of the natural period of buildings and adjacent ceiling zones.

Grid-type system ceilings are widely used in Japan, but those seismic performances have not been clarified sufficiently yet. In this report, static loading tests are conducted to clarify in-plane shear behaviors and collapse states of system ceilings. Based on the test results, an analytical model with corresponding restoring force characteristics is established. Seismic response analyses under moderate earthquakes show that in-plane deformations are less than about 20% of the one corresponding to maximum bearing capacity in the test. It is noteworthy that brace layout and number of earthquakes can be factors to increase shear deformations.

Recent researches pointed out that steel furring suspended ceiling systems attached to its surrounding walls/beams without clearance have a certain seismic capacity. Although guidelines limit overhanging length at the end of ceilings, the effect of the length on in-plane compression strength of ceilings has not been clarified yet. In this paper, static loading tests are conducted to grasp the effect and collapse mechanisms using some specimens with different overhanging length. The results show that the effect is relatively small.

In recent years, suspended ceilings were often damaged by earthquakes. Investigations on seismic capacity of ceilings have been conducted by some researchers. The new standard for ceilings against earthquakes requires a relatively large clearance around those to prevent collision with surrounding walls. On the other hand, there are still the needs for ceilings without clearance because of workability or room&rsquo;s uses. In this paper, mechanical properties of steel furring suspended ceiling system for in-plane compression are clarified by static compression tests, using small and large scale specimen. Those properties are essential to evaluate the seismic capacity of ceilings without clearance.

In the Great East Japan Earthquake, many suspended ceilings were damaged and fell down. If ceiling systems are attached to its surrounding walls and beams, in-plane compression strength of ceilings can be a primary factor of seismic design. By the results of compression tests, the strength is often limited by the buckling of ceiling as a composite plate. In this case, bending mechanical properties of ceiling system can be major factors of fragility against earthquakes. In this paper, bending stiffness and strength of steel furring suspended ceiling system are clarified by static bending tests.

Previous studies have suggested that rocking vibration accompanied with foundation uplift motion might reduce the seismic damage of buildings subjected to severe earthquake motions. In this paper, the seismic response of simplified analytical models of rocking frames with column-bases allowed to uplift is evaluated by numerical analyses. The results are: 1)The base shear spectra for rocking models subjected to an earthquake motion demonstrate the definite reduction of base shear as compared to the fixed-base models over a certain range of natural period; 2) The total input energy exerted to rocking models during uplift motion is reduced by the amount of the incremental potential energy; and, 3) The vertical component of earthquake motions does not much affect the horizontal responses of rocking models but increases slightly their uplift response displacement.

Previous studies have suggested that rocking vibration accompanied with uplift motion might reduce the seismic damage of buildings subjected to severe earthquake motions. In this paper, the seismic response of eccentrically braced steel frames with partial columns allowed to uplift is evaluated and compared with that of fixed-base frame by numerical analyses, whose prototype test frame of a full-scale six-story eccentrically braced steel building structure was tested by pseudo-dynamic testing technique in Tsukuba in 1982 to 1984. The results show that the base shears in the frames with column uplift are significantly reduced as compared to the fixed-base frames.

Energy dissipation mechanism of base plate yielding systems is investigated based on results of shaking table tests using a half scale steel frame with three stories. Hysteresis damping capacity of yielding base plates is verified. And effects of vertical inertia force to the energy dissipation mechanism which include impact effects are clarified. The energy dissipation of the system corresponding to the maximum momentary input energy is expressed using the maximum rigid rotational anele. The maximum response displacements are predicted considering the energy balance condition of the system.

This paper presents a seismic response prediction method for steel frames with hysteretic dampers. This method is based on energy balance and is able to predict the seismic response of frames with dampers yielding under an earthquake to occur several times during the life of buildings. In this method, the number (_dn_l) of eauivalent cycles of plastic deformation in hysteretic dampers is utilized to predict earthquake response of frames with hysteretic dampers. In order to grasp the _dn_l values, earthquake response analysis of analytical frames with hysteretic dampers is carried out. And, the adequacy of seismic response prediction by this method is verified through a comoarison with results of earthquake response analysis of three different story frames.

Shaking table tests are carried out to examine the seismic response of structural systems with yielding base plates using a half scale steel frame with three stories and one bay. During a strong earthquake, these systems cause rocking vibration with the base plates yielding to reduce the seismic response. In the test, the seismic response of base plate yielding systems are compared with that of fixed base systems. Furthermore, simplified methods are proposed to predict their seismic responses, which are vertical stress at column bases, uplift displacements, base shears and roof displacements.

In this paper, we propose a method of improving the deformation capacity of truss grids, without the loss of initial stiffness and load bearing capacity. Shear panels are introduced into the eccentric joint areas To investigate the behavior of the trusses, numerical analysis is carried out using X-braced models for shear panels As a result, it is cleared that such trusses show stable elasto-plastic behavior, keeping their initial stiffness and maximum strength as high as those of ordinary trusses. And the present method improves hysteresis characteristics of truss grids under cyclic loading.

Double layer space truss grids can cause spreading member failures and progressive collapse. To improve this brittle-type post-buckling behavior, we have proposed to introduce eccentric joints in compressive chord members. In this study, structural properties of space truss grids with eccentric members are investigated by numerical analysis. Eccentric joints shed the compressive force of critical chord members to other under-stressed members, and different collapse mechanisms are formed. They make the behavior in post-buckling range stabler. In some cases, load carrying capacity of eccentric jointed trusses can be higher than that of ordinary trusses.

In this study, hysteretic characteristics of eccentric jointed truss beams under the cyclic load are investigated by experiments. It is clear that eccentric joints control the buckling of chord member. Chord member buckling deformation is not large easily under cyclic load for eccentric joints. So eccentric jointed truss beams have very stable hysteretic characteristic. And the eccentric jointed truss beams with shear panels are investigated. As a results, it is clear that the shear panels improve the hysteretic characteristic of truss beams. Because the diagonal tension occurs at effective and stable direction in shear panels under cyclic load.

In this study, the truss beam with the eccentric joints and shear panels is proposed to improve the plastic deformation capacity. Eccentric joints and shear panels are intended to disperse plastic deformation in truss beam and to transform the buckling mode. Mechanical properties of this truss beam are investigated by the loading test and the numerical analysis. As a result, initial stiffness and maximum strength of the truss beam with shear panels are equated with ones of the ordinary truss beam, and plastic deformation behavior is very stable. And shear panel form and arrangement are able to choose suitably.

In this paper, structural properties of truss beams with eccentric members are investigated by numerical analysis. The analytical parameters are the length and properties of the eccentric members. As a result, it is cleared that the plastic deformation behavior of such truss beams is improved, if the eccentric members yield before the critical chord member buckles. The initial stiffness and the maximum strength do not largely depend on the sectional properties of eccentric members. The slenderness ratio of the eccentric members can be a deciding factor not only in the yield load but also in the plastic deformation capacity.

We have proposed the trusses with eccentric joints to improve the post-buckling behavior. It is confirmed that the trusses with eccentric joints show stable behavior, although their initial stiffness and ultimate strength are not so high as those of ordinary trusses. In this paper, loading tests and numerial analyses are carried out to investigate the effect of lattice patterns (warren or double-warren) on ultimate strength and plastic deformation behavior of truss beams with several types of eccentric joints. As a result, double-warren trusses with eccentric joints show stable behavior, keeping their load bearing capacity high enough.

The space truss is subject to failure by the member buckling of compressive chord members. After buckling, a member loses most of its strength, shedding force to neighbor members. This causes spreading member failures and a progressive collapse, which could take only seconds to develop. We propose a method to control collapse mechanism to improve the plastic deformation capacity of the space truss. The method is to use the compressive chord members with eccentric joints in space truss. We clarified the structural properties of this space truss by experiment and numerical analysis.

Structures allowed to uplift can reduce seismic forces in comparison with fixed ones. However, relatively high strength is required to avoid any damage due to higher modes’ vibrations. Even if structures are allowed not only to uplift but also to go into elasto-plastic range, ductility demand may be reduced by potential energy in uplift motion. In this study, dynamic elasto-plastic behaviors accompanied by uplift are investigated by analysis and shaking table test. As a result, it is clarified that allowing uplift can reduce damage of structures. Required strength to avoid serious damage is a little bit higher than that of initiation of uplift.

Those systems are(1) Systems allowed to uplift at mid-story,(2) Systems allowed to uplift with narrower span of column/support than the width, and(3) Systems with multi spans. For(1) and(2), analytical study is done using uniform shear-beam model to clarify those vibration characteristics and dynamic behaviors. Then shaking table tests are conducted to investigate the seismic responses and reduction effect by uplift motion. For(3), a self-centering structural system is proposed and seismic response analysis is carried out to investigate the multi-dimensional responses using an application example. There are some differences in the steel structures from the view of seismic designs between U.S.and Japan. Japanese typical frames are spatial moment resisting frames. U.S. frames are the perimeter frames, and the columns inside the frames are designed as the gravity columns which support only the weight of the buildings. Such columns may divide the shear force over the height of the frame and work as the damage control systems. This study clarifies the drift deformation concentration for the standard steel moment resistant frames in U.S.and Japan. The equations for the drift concentration are developed under the equilibrium conditions, and compared with the push over analyses results.

This study aims to investigate possibility and efficiency of a failsafe structural system using uplift mechanism to make buildings safety even against larger earthquake response effects than those estimated with ordinal seismic design codes. Previous studies have cleared that rocking vibration accompanied with uplift motion might reduce the seismic damage of buildings subjected sever earthquake motions. The proposed fat-1mi. system is based on this knowledge. This system shows seismic response characteristics of a fixed column base system under certain seismic input leveL But it starts rocking once the seismic input level exceeds the limit. Uplift response due to the rocking will restrain ascent of seismic input to the structures.
Firstly, to introduce uplift mechanism to building structures, the following research items were studied.
1) Steel frame systems utilizing uplift mechanism
2) Restoring force characteristics of column bases to make steel frames uplift
Secondary, to develop more appropriate seismic performance evaluation methods for rocking structures, the following research items were studied.
3) Seismic lateral force distribution of rocking structures
4) Effect of floor incline during an earthquake to indoor objects in rocking structures Finally, the following research item was studied based on earthquake response analyses using simplified building structural models.
5) Efficiency of the proposed failsafe system using uplift mechanism against sever earthquake ground motions
Through these studies, some frame systems and structural members for rocking structures were proposed and uplift response characteristics were analyzed quantitatively. And the efficiency of the proposed failsafe system against sever earthquakes was confirmed. When we apply this system to buildings with a high aspect ratio, it can provide them superior seismic performance, which is almost equal to that of passive vibration control systems with hysteresis dampers.

Past studies have pointed out that the effects of rocking vibration accompanied with uplift motion might reduce the seismic damage of buildings subjected to strong earthquake ground motions. Based on these studies, structural systems have been developed that permit rocking vibration and uplift motion under appropriate control during major earthquake ground motions. These systems can lead to reduced seismic response.
In this study, the seismic response of the controlled rocking building structures with yielding base plates is examined and evaluated. The results of this study are summarized as follows:
1)The large-size column bases with yielding base plates were tested in static loading. The deformation characteristics and ultimate deformation capacity under cyclic behavior were quantitatively examined from the test results. The hysteretic model of yielding base plates was also studied and proposed.
2)The three-dimensional seismic response of controlled rocking systems with columns allowed to uplift was evaluated and compared with that of fixed-base systems by finite element numerical analyses. The peak values of local strain near the column end of the base plate were compared with the statically loading test results and did not reach the ultimate strain values. It was also noted that the impact effect on columns at column landing was small from the examination of the peak local stress in columns at the first story.
3)The three-dimensional seismic response of controlled rocking systems subjected to three-dimensional seismic motions was examined and evaluated by finite element numerical analyses. It was shown that the torsional behavior and the vertical components of seismic motions did not definitely affect the seismic performance of structures.
4)The availability of several types of dampers with yielding base plates and the installation details at the column bases were investigated. The reparability of yielding base palates was also studied.

To reduce seismic damage of buildings, some structural systems which are intentionally allowed to uplift during an earthquake have been proposed. These systems can be generally applied to buildings with large aspect ratio, most of which has only single span. And these buildings will wholly uplift around the bearing on the one side. On the other hand, we propose ‘vibration control systems including uplift mechanism', assuming that seismic damage of buildings with multi-spans can be also reduced even if they are allowed to uplift partially, not wholly. In this research, we develop a method to make buildings uplift and examine seismic performance of the proposed structural systems.
The achievements of this research are summarized as follows ;
(1)Energy dissipation mechanism
Seismic energy dissipation mechanism of buildings allowed to uplift wholly or partially were clarified.
(2)Structural method to make buildings uplift
A structural method to make buildings uplift using yielding base plates was proposed. The yielding base plates are attached at each column base. The restoring force characteristics of the base plates were cleared based on the large scale-tests.
(3)FEM time history response analysis method
Applicability of FEM time history response analysis method, which can analyze impact effects and non-linear behavior of base plates particularly, to buildings allowed to uplift was shown comparing analysis results with past experimental results.
(4)Seismic response reduction effects of proposed structural systems
Some case studies using a time history analysis method were carried out to verify seismic performance of the proposed systems. And their energy dissipation mechanism was shown.
(5)Modal analysis on buildings allowed to uplift
To understand seismic response characteristics of buildings allowed to uplift more generally, a modal analysis method was applied. Especially, effects of higher modes to dynamic behavior of them were shown.
