Harry Braverman's “degradation thesis” is only one aspect of Marx's analysis of the labor process. A close reading of Chapters 13 to 15 of Capital Vol. 1, based on English and Japanese preceding studies, shows a dual system of work organization under the capitalist mode of production: concentrated and dispersed. Today's information and communications (ICT)-based work organization could be seen as an example of the latter, i.e., an online-controlled putting-out system. The concentrated work organization has two types: the automation-oriented model consists of mechanized processes maintained by unskilled labor. In contrast, the craft-oriented model is a set of mechanized work that requires different kinds of skilled labor. These definitions urge us to reconsider the general law of capitalist accumulation and the traditional strategy regarding class struggle.

This article deals with the Japanese contributions to the Marxian theory of commercial capital, which can be originally found in Part 4 of Capital Vol. 3. This part was formerly considered important for developing the historical development of capitalist society in Japan, which is called the stages theory. From the 1980s to the 2000s, Shigekatsu Yamaguchi led the Japanese studies on the Marxian theory of commercial capital to reorganise the theory in Parts 4 and 5 of Capital Vol. 3, thereby pioneering the theoretical study of the capitalist market. Based on that development, we discuss the reconstruction of the relationship between the theory of the capitalist market and the stages theory, thereby illustrating a renewed and clearer understanding of the historical trajectory of capitalism.

This article aims at reconstructing theoretical viewpoint of the market in Marxian economics. We usually assume that the asset of Marxian economics should be the theory of exploitation, which must be proved under the condition of the market equilibrium. In this article, however, we think Marxian economics should provide the whole set of apparatus to criticise capitalism as a social science. To construct Marxian economics as a general social science, we need to develop not only Marxian theory of production but also Marxian theory of market, which can be substituted for the equilibrating theory of market. Here we focus on the theory of market value in Capital Volume III and consider how technological factors affect the market in Marxian terms.

This paper intends to analyze the effect of design management on business performance quantitatively, focusing on firms receiving international design awards, which are supposed to represent their competitive design. First, we conduct a traditional performance study concerning stock and financial indices in Japan to offer the geographical complement to predecessors focusing on other areas. However, the findings from these methods are not always reliable because it entails methodological defects in itself. Thus, secondly, an event study is implemented in order to complement the results of the performance study. It can be said not only to hold a high level of reproducibility and objectivity, but also to help us exclude practically all the effects of factors other than design. We also conduct a performance study as for the same samples and investigate the results. Following the method of event study, we can conclude that effective design management has a positive impact on enterprise value.

Crisis theory in Marxian political economy has been regarded to be of utmost significance for the critical study on capitalism in spite of its incompleteness in Karl Marx's own literatures and has been one of the most fiercely debated subjects among Marxian economists. Enormous amount of theoretical studies in Japan on this topic can be largely categorized into two types according to the view on the principal cause of crisis: one is overproduction theory and the other is profit squeeze theory. This categorization, however, often overlooks the importance of historical perspective that Kozo Uno provided in his studies on crisis. It is true that Uno's crisis theory considers wage rise as the cause of profit squeeze, but what distinguished his work from other Japanese Marxian literatures was the linkage between the crisis theory and the stage theory, in which historical development of capitalism is theoretically conceptualized and empirically investigated with the theoretical image of crisis being one of the standards of analysis. If we are to understand the surge of drastic transformation that recent capitalism is experiencing, this historical sensitivity in Uno's crisis theory must be sophisticated further. That is to say, Uno's crisis theory cannot stay the same as a simple profit squeeze theory and must seek for a reasonable kind of multi-causal approach in order to capture the diversity of crisis phenomena. In Uno's schema, profit squeeze caused by wage rise does not indicate the outbreak of crisis itself. It is literally just a fundamental cause of crisis and practically marks the end of stable growth of capital accumulation by itself. What follows it is an unstable boom, not an immediate downturn. Indeed, wage rise is important not because it directly leads to crisis, but because it is a distinctive turning point of the stability of economy. We must, then, reconsider the process of accumulation towards labour shortage, which might bear another trigger for instability. While capital accumulation expands its scale of production and employs more labourers, it also accompanies technological innovations that are put into practice through fixed capital investment and lets plural conditions of production coexist. The process of accumulation has two aspects: the expansion of employment of labourers and the stratification of conditions of production. The latter should be discussed in relation to market circumstances, since industrial capital tries to evaluate the productivity of condition of production in monetary terms. As the accumulation goes on, the stratification of conditions of production deepens and makes the price system in capitalistic market increasingly complex, thus it becomes more and more difficult for individual industrial capitals to evaluate each production technology. The level of this difficulty in the price evaluation differs among industries, hence affecting investment choice in industries and disturbing the balance in social production. The following market disruption should be another consequence of the process of accumulation than the exhaustion of industrial reserve army. Wage rise is not the exclusive moment that precedes crisis. The systemic defect in capitalistic market with regard to the price evaluation must be conceived of as the other fundamental cause of crisis. These two factors constitute the dichotomy in the concept of crisis under capitalism.

  • Irregularities of Capitalist Market with Plural Conditions of Production [in Japanese] Reviewed

Karl Marx once emphasised continuous fluctuation and dispersion observed in market as the characteristic of the capitalist mode of production, stating "[t] he possibility, therefore, of a quantitative incongruity between price and magnitude of value, i.e. the possibility that the price may diverge from the magnitude of value, is inherent in the price-form itself. This is not a defect, but, on the contrary, it makes this form the adequate one for a mode of production whose laws can only assert themselves as blindly operating averages between constant irregularities" (Capital, Vol.1, Penguin Classics, p.196). While this recognition was to reassert itself in the description of the social division of labour and be put as "the anarchy of commodity producing society" in Rudolf Hilferding's Finance Capital, their causes and functions within market itself, distinguished from relations of production, were investigated further by some Japanese Marxian economists such as Kozo Uno and his followers. Their theoretical analyses of the irregularities of market were, however, generally restricted to the level of Capital Vol.1 and all they have achieved beyond it is the application of them to the situation where we have plural conditions to produce one kind of commodity, which is discussed as the theory of market value in chapter 10 of Capital Vol.3. In this paper, we attempt to examine the feature of market taking into consideration how capitalists estimate the profitability of condition of production so that we are able to understand the irregularities of capitalist market with plural conditions of production more fundamentally. In order to analyse the profitability of conditions of production, we avail ourselves of price equations, shown as simultaneous equations representing production of two kinds of commodities. The solution can be regarded as formulated profitability. Then, firstly, the case that has two conditions of production in a certain industry is discussed. Here, there are two production prices that can be obtained as solutions owing to plurality of technology, hence two ways to evaluate profitability. However, we conclude that it does not matter which one of the production prices is used for evaluation. This proposition does not hold if we consider the second case where there are two conditions of production in each industry so that four production prices can exist. In other words, when we need to evaluate conditions of production using these four production prices, the order of profitability may depend on the standard of evaluation. Simple transformations of equations are employed to identify the precondition of this reversal in the order. This formulated evaluation of profitability examined above should be reconsidered as an estimating process conducted by individual capitalists. The investment process carried out by capitalists has been often taken to be "the incessant equilibration of the continual differences". This fluctuation occurs because of the uncertainty of market, but provided we are to persist in this point, it is careless of individual industrial capitalists to advance fixed capital merely on account of temporary market circumstances. They should contrive to select a condition of production, which is embodied in fixed capital. Thus fixed capital allocation is affected by the profitability of conditions of production as well as by the inherent irregularities of market. Because of this effect, two types of irregularities can be distinguished in capitalistic market according as the estimation of conditions of production varies.

This edited volume traces the development of the Marxian theory of finance in Japan. Japanese Marxists have long been engaged in this field of study, yet their achievements are hardly known in other languages. Japanese Discourses on the Marxian Theory of Finance brings together in English for the first time six core essays essential to the understanding of the history and development of Japanese Marxian economics. Part I considers the so-called Uno-Miyake debate, which shaped the direction of the research in postwar Japan. Part II includes the three core essays influenced by Uno, including an essay by Shigekatsu Yamaguchi, who introduced a new method to systematically deal with “credit creation” which must be duly taken into consideration if scholars are to analyze today’s “financialization." Finally, the last two essays follow from Yamaguchi’s influential theory to consider the relation of banking with the capital market to complete the theory of finance in Marxian economics.
