    Setting up a stable multiphase Volume of Fluid (VoF) numerical simulation to quantify capillary bridge forces acting on soil particles in the pendular regime presents significant computational challenges. Non-physical currents in these surface tension dominated simulations generate parasitic viscous forces that compromise the total force predictive capability of the numerical model. This study examines a two-sphere system with an intervening capillary bridge as its primary test case. OpenFOAM’s Geometric (PLIC, isoAdvector) and Algebraic (MULES) VoF approaches using the CSF Surface Tension (ST) model proved insufficient, necessitating modifications to the ST model. Two specific advanced ST models for the algebraic VoF were investigated: Laplacian Smoothing (SCSF) and Sharpening with Smoothing (SSF) of the VoF field. The parameters of the ST model require tuning based on the specific fluid combination considered. For oil-air fluid combinations characterized by a high density ratio, high viscosity, and weak surface tension forces compared to water-air systems, careful calibration of solver parameters, mesh division, and time step are essential to minimize spurious currents while preserving interface curvature accuracy.

    Arguably the most important idea in modern soil mechanics is the principle of effective stress put forward by Karl Terzaghi just over a century ago in 1923. The transformational impact of this principle on soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering reflects both the importance and challenge of accounting for the interaction between the solid and liquid phases in soil and other particulate materials. Apart from the multi-phase nature of soil, the influence of temperature changes and chemistry may also be significant. A comprehensive model should account for thermal, hydraulic, mechanical and chemical couplings. Despite significant advances our fundamental understanding of the interaction between the phases and phenomena remains incomplete, compromising our ability to accurately model or predict behaviour for engineering design analyses. Discrete element method (DEM) simulations, coarse-grained molecular dynamics, porenetwork- modelling, and finite volume method computational fluid dynamics simulations together can advance understanding of key coupled phenomena in sand and clay. Emerging challenges include liquidparticle interactions considering both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, the impact of pore-fluid chemistry on clay behaviour, the response of granular materials to changes in temperature, and the challenge of accurately modelling the pressure field when the pore-space includes multiple fluid phases. This paper demonstrates the value of particle and sub-particle scale simulations, while also introducing some of the numerical techniques that can be adopted to develop fully coupled simulation tools.

    Abstract

    Preventing excavations from collapsing before inserting the permanent structure is essential in many geotechnical projects. Support fluids, most commonly comprising suspensions of bentonite clay, are one way to achieve this support. Compared to bentonite slurries, support systems that use polymer fluids are economical and have a smaller environmental impact. Currently, a poor understanding of how these support fluids achieve support hinders the broad application of these materials in ground engineering. One key issue is quantifying the fluid-particle interaction force, which ultimately contributes to the overall excavation support. This research exploits Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in a detailed study of the fluid-particle interaction. The results show that the fluid-particle interaction forces for polymer support fluids may be up to 104 times that for water at very low seepage velocities. It gives an insight into the support mechanism using polymer support fluids.

    Abstract

    Predicting the degree of saturation in soil is important to evaluate and improve the resilience of geotechnical structures including embankments. This study focuses on the hysteresis in soil water retention curves (WRCs) caused by the ink-bottle effect. The hysteretic WRCs of a tube-bulb system were simulated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the ink-bottle effect mechanisms were captured. To simulate the WRCs of granular materials, numerical models of face-centered-cubic packing of spheres with tetrahedron and hexahedron meshes were developed. The simulation results showed that the fluid surface was more accurately captured when a hexahedral mesh was used and that the accuracy of the two models was comparable in steady-state saturated flow analysis.

    Tensile stress is internally induced when soil shrinkage due to desiccation is restricted, and cracks occur when the induced tensile stress reaches tensile strength. Various numerical models have been proposed to predict crack initiation; however, the validity of the computed internal stresses during the cracking process has not been assessed, although the internal stresses directly influence the crack initiation. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of a laboratory-based desiccation stress test, which measures the induced tensile stress until crack initiation. Desiccation stress tests were performed on unsaturated sandy soil with two different water contents. The measured tensile stress until cracking was numerically simulated using a hypo-elastic model based on the skeleton stress considering the suction effects. The computed tensile stress was consistent with the measured values throughout the cracking process in both cases, with different initial water contents. Stress-based validation using the results of the desiccation stress test demonstrated that the proposed constitutive model yields reliable estimations of the internal tensile stress in unsaturated soils until crack initiation.

    This paper presents a system for monitoring quasi-static displacements, named GWSN for "GPS wireless sensor network". This system consists of the technologies of a low-cost L1 GPS (Global Positioning System) and wireless sensor network. The low-cost sensor node and cable-less system enable us to deploy sensors in dense numbers over a vast area. In general, displacement monitoring using GPS has a trade-off relationship between energy consumption and accuracy of estimation. Measuring continuous data and applying a trend analysis or Kalman filter outputs a highly accurate displacement estimation but also needs much energy dissipation. To solve the trade-off relationship, a data compression method and a static GPS positioning analysis method were developed and implemented in the system. In these methods, the assumption of quasi-static displacement was taken into account. A prototype system was developed and experiments were conducted in a quarry site and in an ideal condition using the developed prototype. The experimental results show that the prototype system works without serious system trouble in outdoor environments and has a great potential to measure displacements with sub-centimeter accuracy.

    One of the most important topics in the research of wireless sensor network is the time synchronization among sensor nodes. Especially, acceleration measurement applications for civil infrastructure sensing require the synchronization at the highest level. This paper presents the broadcast time stamp based synchronization method. This method uses i) robust hardware for wireless communication, and ii) 2 CPUs for each sensor node. Each CPU on a node is specialized for i) processing of time stamp and ii) acceleration measurement. Robustness and the accuracy of the time synchronization has been experimentally evaluated and robust synchronization with the accuracy of hundreds of μs has been validated.

    表層は浸透・蒸発に伴い激しく水分ポテンシャルが変化し,これと連動した土粒子間力の変化により,変形が生じる。表層の崩壊,侵食を防止し,また地表が文化的価値を有する遺構を保全する上で表層の力学の理解は不可欠である。しかし,低拘束圧下(土被り1m,20kPa以下),特に不飽和で考慮が必要な引張領域の試験は難しく,評価手法が確立されていない。本研究は,引張~低圧縮領域に特化した試験法の構築により,締固め土の低圧下の力学特性を解明し,表層の乾湿に伴う変形評価を可能にすることを目的とする。そして,本評価手法の実践として,乾湿による損傷が著しい地盤遺構の水分制御に応用する。低拘束圧・広域ポテンシャル下の土質力学の構築を志す研究に位置づけられ,既存の不飽和力学の適用外であった表層の多様な問題へのアプローチを可能にする。
    具体的には,(研究1)低圧試験法の構築と乾燥過程・再湿潤時の力学特性の評価,(研究2)表層の変形解析法の開発と検証,(研究3)表層の力学評価に基づく遺構の水分制御方法の提案,に取り組む。
    初年度にあたるR3年度においては,研究1については,既存の中空ねじり試験装置を用いて,提案法で引張破壊が再現できることを確認した。また,研究2の開発項目である地盤表層の浸透・蒸発過程を再現する解析手法の開発に重点的に取り組んだ。水分と熱の同時移動を考慮した一次元の解析プログラムを構築し,土柱の蒸発実験と比較をして妥当性を検証した。研究3については,地盤と空気の界面での遮水現象に着目し,降雨実験と再現解析を実施した。

    This study aims 1) to evaluate water transfer in desiccation process, 2) to measure volume change and tensile stress due to desiccation, and 3) to develop countermeasures for desiccation considering water transfer, deformation and stress. The major achievements are 1) development of numerical analysis of water and heat transfer of soil during evaporation, and clarification of its problems via the comparison with experimental results, 2) development and verification of a method for measuring internal stress evolving in desiccation cracking process, and 3) numerical simulation of the internal stress measured with the proposed experiment using a non-liner elastic model which uses skeleton stress as a stress variable.

    古墳の損傷は,①墳丘の物理的な損傷,②墳丘内部の水分移動に関する損傷,③石室内の温湿度環境に起因する損傷,の三種類に分類される。本研究では,これらの損傷を抑制し,本質的価値をまもりながら古墳を保存することを目的に,地盤工学に基づいた修復・保存技術を研究している。以下に,本研究で取り組んだ3つの課題とその実績概要を示す。

    課題1 墳丘の強度・安定性の確保:特に降雨による墳丘の崩壊を対象に,墳丘に適用可能な実質非破壊の強度,密度の試験方法とこれを用いた安定性評価方法について検討した。昨年度までに一連の評価方法を検討しており,今年度は,実際の墳丘の浸透特性を実験で評価したものを適用して,より精度よく安定性を評価するよう改良した。
    課題2 墳丘内部の水分移動の制御:細粗粒土の二層地盤の層境界に発現する遮水層であるキャピラリーバリアに着目し,これを墳丘の雨水の浸透抑制に活用するため,遮水のメカニズムについて検討した。昨年度までに模型実験を実施しており,今年度は,これを数値解析で再現し,模型地盤内の雨水の浸透を詳細に分析した。その結果,遮水は不飽和状態で粗粒土の透水係数が細粒土に比べて大幅に小さいために,粗粒土層への浸透が抑制されることに起因していることがわかった。
    課題3 石室内部の温湿度環境の制御:石室石材や壁画の劣化の多くは,室温変化とそれに伴う結露の発生に起因する。そこで,石室を覆う墳丘の断熱性の向上によって室温変動を抑制することを目的に,墳丘の密度,飽和度,層厚が石室環境に与える影響を実験と解析により,定量的に評価した。その結果,墳丘の層厚は室温と結露量への影響が大きく,墳丘の損失が被害の一因になりうること,また増し厚により断熱性を効果的に高められることがわかった。一方,密度と飽和度に関しては,現実的な可変範囲においては,影響が小さいことがわかった。
