    This paper analyzes the diffusion method and the actual situation of construction of Kume’s Earthquake Resistant Timber Framed Structure. After coming back to Japan, Kume firstly demonstrated earthquake resistance of his theory through using his personal connections, and secondary Kume advertised it by using mass media. In the construction specification of works, dimension and fixing method of each member of framed structure, and materials of exterior wall were instructed. The composition of framed structure and roof construction, materials of exterior wall, and erection procedure of Nikko Kanaya Hotel Annex (1935) were constructed with basing on his theory.

    This paper analyzes the relationship between design and performance of works built using Kume’s Seismic Timber Framed Construction Method. Exterior styles of its works were diverse, including Japanese, Western, and modern styles. Construction period of exterior mortar walls was shortened by installing a new product: Platon (cemented excelsior board) as a mortar base. Large windows were designed to open fully by using the new products: Rolscreen, Fuko Mado, and wooden shutters. Kume was actively involved in the invention of Platon and Fuko Mado. Shutter boxes were designed to adapt them to each interior style: Japanese, Western, and modern.

    This paper focuses on frame structures built using Kume’s Seismic Timber Framed Construction Method developed by Gonkuro Kume, and examines the intentions of the author. Among 32 works found during the study, two major building types were classified: two-story detached residences with wide-openings and three-story resort hotels with long-spans. Kume’s theory was intended to build a lightweight and rigid structural framework with a low center of gravity. His unique understanding of structure was developed through his experiences studying architecture in Germany, experimenting on an actual building under construction using his theory, and receiving support from his close friends.

    Records of Umbrella House Relocation Project
    This paper aims to clarify the issues faced by the actors involved in the overseas relocation of the Umbrella House. The conducted interviews revealed several difficulties that were summarized into four categories: Communication, Cost, Measurement Survey & Relocation Design, and Repair & Relocation. The issues were also divided according to whether they were specific to this project or related to the relocation of modern heritage houses in general. The knowledge acquired through this project is thought to be useful for the preservation and succession of modern heritage houses in the future.
