    Abstract

Design computing refers to the usage of computer frameworks, models or systems in design-related activities. Design computing research, in turn, refers to the development of these frameworks/models/systems, and so forth. As design practice increasingly relies on computer tools, the demand for research in design computing grows. While this opens innumerable venues for research, the profusion of information in the field poses significant challenges for researchers. Therefore, meta-level surveys of the field are called for. To provide researchers with a useful overview of design computing research, we set out to identify some of the main clusters of activity in the field. By “clusters of activity”, we refer to groups of researchers pursuing similar or identical research questions. Our PRISMA-style review focuses on the identification of such clusters, based on the complete proceedings (N = 404) of a long-standing conference (Design Computing and Cognition, DCC, 2004–2024), which captures the richness and diversity of the field. The primary contribution of this work is a map that organizes the main questions explored and the approaches taken in exploring them, which are informative for researchers and educators alike. This map may also help to execute large-scale surveys via automation, toward obtaining a comprehensive view of the field.

    Abstract

Gaze sharing is an emerging technology which can enhance human communication and collaboration. As such, it is expected to play an important role in future educational practices. To date, its application was not explored in the context of design education. Additionally, it was mainly implemented in non-immersive environments, which are limited in their potential for engaging learners. Acknowledging the growing interest in immersive learning, as well as the promise made by gaze sharing technology, we strive to develop an immersive gaze sharing environment, to support design education. As a first step, we have implemented and tested an immersive gaze sharing system for supporting design learners. The system was then tested by focusing on a scenario of architectural design, with the aim of collecting valuable user feedback regarding its usability and potential. Our initial user study informs developers of such systems regarding potential issues that may be encountered during deployment in a real-world setting and proposes concrete ways to address these. These insights can help to pave the way for integrating gaze sharing system into design education practices in the near future.

The main achievements in FY 2022-2023 are: (1) a detailed literature review was conducted to better situate the work within the context of ongoing research involving eye tracking in design. In this, we have conducted a broad survey involving over 30 works between the years 1996-2023, and identified several clusters such as memory studies, navigation studies, form evaluation studies, etc. This enables to better position this study with respect to ongoing efforts to understand the behavior of designers, and emphasize its potential for expanding the scope of design evaluation studies into the domain of design conversation between several stakeholders; (2) a formal approval from the ethics committee of the Tokyo Institute of Technology was obtained, to conduct research with human subjects; (3) technical preparations for executing the eye tracking experiment in a lab environment were completed, including a pilot for data collection and its analysis; (4) as a basis for the eye tracking experiment, two studies which explore the relations between design conversation and interpretation were executed and published - one which demonstrates how we can extract designers' subjective interpretations from speech (Cao, Kahlon and Fujii, 2022) and another in which we proposed a framework for analyzing narratives in design (Kahlon and Fujii, 2022). These will serve as the basis for analyzing the data from the eye tracking experiment; (5) recruitment of our first group of professional architects for our eye tracking experiment was completed.
