In designing to improve the quality of childcare, it is necessary to empathize with stakeholders in daycare. In the childcare field, there is many context-dependent know-how that only the people in the field can understand. It is essential to involve designers and non-designers in co-designing. The recent development of information and communication technologies (ICT) has allowed the acquisition of in-situ behavioral data, which is defined as “a collection of specific information, referring to data from sensors, self-logging, telemetry, or social networks which capture people’s behaviors and patterns”. Although behavioral data has not been widely used in design, co-designers' behavioral data has the potential to play an important role in supporting co-design by providing a common ground. Developing tools to support reflection uses the field’s data. The materials provide a common understanding of the scene to be considered for reflection. However, selecting which scenes to reflect and post-data collection processing requires huge efforts. Thus, there is a need to automate the scene selection based on data-driven detection of the childcare contexts. As a step towards data-driven co-design workshops, this study aims to clarify the influence of scene extraction methods on reflection by childcare workers. We collected video recordings in a room mainly used for caring for one-year-old children at a nursery in Japan. The videos used for the workshops were recorded in two ways: upon staff’s individual request, namely self-logging, during caring, and automatic scene detection based on the sound levels. One staff member participated in the data collection. As a result, 16 videos were collected, and then the staff selected the two best videos for the workshop. Two videos were excerpted from a video having been captured whole day depending on the sound level. The excerpted videos had the largest sound level during the day.The workshop was conducted with eight childcare workers. The purpose of the session was to discuss daily childcare and how to take care of children and gain new insights. The participants reflected on each video of self-logged daycare scenes, and then on the auto excerpted videos. The reflection includes, for example, what happened, how the staff behaved, how the staff should have acted, and why the staff could or could not act ideally in the videos. The recorded videos were categorized, and the participants’ perceptions were transcribed for analysis. The videos of daycare were categorized into 9 categories based on video content, and brief notes attached to a staff recording request. The quotes related to video-based reflection and possible data for supporting reflection are extracted from the transcript of the workshop. Overall, the results imply that behavioral data and auto-excerpted recorded videos have huge potential to be used for reflection. The next step of this research is to clarify the issue and benefit of using behavioral data for co-design by conducting a workshop among designers and daycare staff to improve the quality of childcare.

This paper proposes novel prediction models for the subjective impressions of meeting participants, based on their head-movement functions. The goal is to estimate the self-rated impression scores on the impression items consisting of `atmosphere,' `enjoyment,' `willingness,' and `concentration,' which were rated every two-minute intervals in the meetings. The prediction model employs Random-Forest regressors that input head-movement function features based on 10 head-movement functions detected with convolutional neural networks using head pose sequences measured in the meeting videos. The experiment results show the models' predictability and reveal the relationship between the impressions and the participants' behaviors.

The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of graphic recording in the co-creative meetings. We conducted experiments comparing with and without graphic recordings in co-creative meetings. Our experiments focused on 3 aspects of graphic recordings: characteristics of the meeting, how the graphics are used and the purpose of their use, and the effect of graphic recording. 16 subjects were divided into 4 groups and held meetings with graphic recordings which were to design new services. We also had meetings without graphic recordings in which 17 groups (68 subjects) participated, and compared the meetings with graphic recordings. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted before and after the meetings. From the detailed analysis of our meetings corpus, we found that graphic recording reduces feelings of “talking time was not enough”. In addition, it was confirmed that the participants felt that graphic recording helped them to form a common understanding by pointing the graphics. In addition, it was found that there is a possibility of creating motivation to participate in the meetings with graphic recordings.

Living Lab (LL), which is a design methodology to co-create services involving citizens, have been attracting attention. LL requires long-term co-creation with citizens; it is therefore important to clarify the knowledge to effectively promote such co-creation (co-creation knowhow). The purpose of this study is to clarify the co-creation knowhow in LL. In this study, we applied a research approach based on "design practice." We first implemented an LL project for community building in a Disaster Public Housing. Afterwards, through the reflection of the practice, we analyzed co-creation knowhow. As a result, we constructed a model that presents concrete actions (i.e., knowhow) to achieve effective co-creation with citizens. This model can be useful for LL practitioners to plan and operate LL process, because it informs specific actions to be taken.

The purpose of this study is to clarify what kind of value mothers place on the picture book reading. After observing a mother-child interaction in picture book reading, we conducted semi-structured interview for mothers who have their child aged in 20 to 26 months. The results from the interview showed that the mothers place on the three values of picture book reading based on their child's reactions. These are : 1) “Values related to child development and growth” such as promoting and understanding child development and growth, 2) “Values related to their child here and now”that children here are in positive state, 3) “Values related to mothers themselves” such as that mothers are satisfied with the reaction of their child. Moreover, the results showed that reading picture book with children has not only merit for children, such as promoting child development, mothers find value for themselves. These findings suggested that mothers who read picture books adjusted their behavior for children to increase these values, which in turn encouraged children to develop.

Living labs make it possible to create highly aligned service to the users real context of use. However, motivation of the users to participate in the process is not clear. We therefore conducted a field study to understand the meanings of participating in the living lab for the purpose to enhance the value of the living lab. Our study showed that users had derived diverse meanings from the dialogue in the living lab; the living lab enables participants to broaden their perspective, gain self-knowledge, as well as to serve other people to satisfy their need.

Designing an attractive new service is a difficult task. Researchers have developed various tools that can help designers become more efficient in the field of the service design. In practice, however, designing an attractive service raises unforeseen problems that hinder progress in the project. Actual projects often become delayed or diverted. This paper introduces a case-study that reveals the true progression of a project in the early stage of service design. We adopt the ethnographic approach in observing a project for four months. We particularly focus on the causes of problems that cause delay and diversion of the design iteration. In addition, we develop a novel method and tool to support service design based on insights of the observation result by utilizing human-centered design process. Our tool allows a designer to iteratively design a service concept easily and quickly in the early stage of service design based on a storyboarding. Furthermore, this case study suggested the effectiveness of human-centered design process for developing a novel method to support service design.

User-tests are often conducted at laboratories before bringing a product into the market. It has, however, not been clearly understood to how much extent laboratory-based experiments reflect the behavior of real users. We conducted both laboratory experiments and the field-study in the same conditions, and compared the results. The results showed that the users at the lab tended to try to contend with the problem by themselves, whereas the users in the field turned to others easily. We also found that the rate of the mistakes when connecting the devices together differ between at the lab and in the field because of the environmental differences. However, success rate didn't show any differences.
