    Reducing electronic leakage is important for improving the performance of protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) because it can considerably decrease power efficiency. In this work, we explore the efficacy of bilayer electrolytes using BaZr0.8Y0.2O3−δ (BZY) and BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3−δ (BZCYYb) as the anode and cathode-side electrolytes, respectively. Theoretical calculations were used to guide the design and experimental fabrication of highly efficient cells. Computational results showed that higher efficiencies were achieved when a thin BZY layer was applied to a thicker BZCYYb layer. This configuration served as a barrier, effectively preventing electronic leakage. Subsequently, a BZY|BZCYYb cell was fabricated and tested using I-V and electrochemical impedance measurements. The results were compared with those of single-layer BZY and BZCYYb cells. The bilayer electrolyte exhibited higher open-circuit voltages, suggesting a reduction in the leakage current. Moreover, the bilayer cell exhibited the lowest ohmic resistance and highest power density. Thus, BZY|BZCYYb bilayer electrolytes can potentially improve the performance and efficiency of PCFCs.

    A highly efficient power generation system was designed by minimizing leakage current in protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) using bilayer electrolytes. The best electrolyte designs are achieved by optimizing the cell efficiency based on the transport properties of electrolyte materials assuming hydrogen as fuel. In parallel, the effect of the electrodes on the overall cell performance was also considered. Additionally, a PCFC system was modeled using the designed cells. Two PCFC systems were investigated. One based on hydrogen as a fuel, and another based on methane as fuel. It was found that a bilayer electrolyte consisting of BaZr0.8Y0.2O3−δ (BZY) with a thin layer of lanthanum tungstate (La28-xW4+xO54+3x/2v2-3x/2) is the most effective at reducing leakage current at 600°C. For this cell, a system efficiency of 69% (LHV, DC) and 65% (LHV, AC) were obtained under the cell voltage of 0.93 V, with a leakage current ratio of less than 1%, and fuel utilization of 95% when using hydrogen as fuel. On the other hand, when methane was used as fuel, the efficiency increased up to 78% (LHV, DC) and 74% (LHV, AC).

    Ammonia electrosynthesis was conducted using proton-conducting ceramic electrolysis cells in a single chamber supplied with mixed N2 and H2, to determine the active electrode regions for the electrochemical promotion of catalysis (EPOC). Cells with Fe-based cathodes of either a metal, cermet, or mixed ionic-electronic conductor (MIEC) structure were compared, to assess whether the triple-phase boundaries (TPBs) or the Fe catalyst surfaces are more effective for ammonia synthesis. Upon cathodic polarization at 600˚C, high ammonia formation rates on the order of 10−8 mol s−1 cm−2 were obtained with both Fe metal and Fe-BaZr0.8Y0.2O3 (Fe-BZY) cermet cathodes. Comparisons of the three electrode structures suggest that when H2 is also supplied to the cathode, ammonia formation occurring on bulk Fe surfaces leads to a greater promotional effect than that at TPBs. There also remains a possibility that the interfacial layer formed at the cathode-electrolyte interface due to cation interdiffusion aids ammonia formation.

    In this study, the efficiency of proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells was improved by designing bilayer electrolytes with high ion conductivity and low hole conduction. The designs were carried out by finding the thicknesses of anode and cathode-side electrolytes that optimizes efficiency using integral equations based on Wagner theory. Results obtained for bilayer electrolytes were compared with those of single-layer electrolytes. Best performances were found when thin layers of lanthanum tungstate (La28-xW4+xO54+3x/2v2-3x/2) with an La/W ratio of 6.7 (LWO67) were used as cathode-side electrolytes attached to commonly used perovskite materials like BaCe0.9Y0.1O3-δ (BCY10), BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-δ (BZY20), and BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ (BZCYYb1711). In addition, the transport properties of a single-layer LWO67 electrolyte were further analyzed by using the Nernst-Planck-Poisson (NPP) model for which parameters were fitted. Finally, a bilayer NPP formulation was explored to obtained the charged defect fluxes and other useful information to enhance the efficiency of a bilayer BZY20|BZCYYb1711 electrolyte.

    The chemical looping reaction is applied to the combustion and gasification of coal for effective energy conversion. The reduction of metal oxide is examined in the fixed / fluidized bed of 20 mm I.D. and 1120 mm in height. As a lattice oxygen carrier, iron oxide is used and coated on the porous alumina of 0.2 mm mean diameter. Taiheiyo coal of 0.5 g is dropped into the test section and gas production profiles were measured with the temperature range 793 K through 983 K. Initial stage of the reaction, only carbon dioxide is observed, while the hydrogen is produced simultaneously for the insufficient amount of lattice oxygen. Hydrogen yield is about 2.5 times of the carbon content and this exceeds 2.0 which is obtained from the complete reactions of the Water gas and Shift reactions. The extra hydrogen is produced from the hydrogen contained in coal and it may give higher cold gas efficiency.

    Photovoltaic (PV) cells are considered as one of countermeasures for saving electricity generated by fossil fuels. When PV cells are largely introduced in Tokyo, the surface heat valance will be changed. We developed a new PV cell surface heat balance model so as to assess all the impacts of introduction of photovoltaic cells, like a change of energy consumption resulting from a change of air temperature and a change of cooling loads in buildings resulting from the shielding effect ofphotovoltaic cells.<BR>We set PV cells on the top of the roof of a research institute building in Tsukuba, Japan, and measured PV cell surface heat valance and meteorological data. From these measured data, we determined our model's parameters.

    新規な電極触媒反応場を利用した電気化学反応装置の開発を目的として、初年度である令和3年度は、電気化学および反応生成物の測定系の構築を行うとともに、プロトン伝導性電解質を用いた電解セルの作製を行い、窒素還元反応および二酸化炭素還元反応の実験の立ち上げを行った。窒素還元によるアンモニア電解合成については、イットリウムドープセリア酸バリウムを電解質に用い、窒素と水素を同時に供給する方式である一室型セルで検討を行った。その結果、電極触媒としてFeを用いた場合、カソード分極に伴いアンモニアの生成速度の上昇が観測された。また、二酸化炭素還元によるメタンと一酸化炭素生成の実験について、イットリウムドープジルコン酸バリウムを電解質に用い、二酸化炭素と水素をカソードとアノードに別々に供給する二室型セルで反応生成物の検出を行った。電極触媒としてNiとCuを用いた観測を通じて、一酸化炭素とメタンの生成が観測された。メタン生成反応の電極電位に対する依存性が確認されたが、一酸化炭素に対する選択率の向上が課題であることがわかり、今後触媒の開発が必要である。さらに、初年度はアノードの水蒸気電解の検討に向け、積層型セルの検討も開始した。プロトン伝導性セラミックセルでは電解質内のホール伝導によるリーク電流の抑制が重要になる。ランタン系プロトン伝導体を中間層に導入した積層型セルを作製し、ホール伝導の抑制と起電力の向上を確認した。さらに、作動温度の低温化の観点から単体および複合型の無機プロトン伝導性電解質の合成にも着手した。以上の検討を通じて、提案する電気化学セル構築に向けた有用な知見を得ることができた。

    化学ループ法と再生可能エネルギーを融合させた新規なシステムの提案として、今年度はバイオマスおよび太陽電池の余剰電力の有効利用を指向し、以下の二つの新規プロセスについて検討した。まずは、木質バイオマス発電における二酸化炭素の分離回収を含めた化学ループの技術および経済性の評価を行った。化学ループ法の優位性を検証するために、従来の木質バイオマスの直熱燃焼後の二酸化炭素の分離回収との比較を行った。化学ループ法については、流動層リアクターを含む詳細なシステム設計を行い、発電スケール毎に評価を行った。二酸化炭素の輸送プロセスについては、液化した二酸化炭素のトラック輸送が低コストであることが明らかになった。その結果、化学ループ法を用いた場合、二酸化炭素の回収質量あたりのトータルのバイオマス発電コストは従来法と比較して17%低減できることが明らかになった。その際の最適発電スケールは50 MWthであった。また、発電における二酸化炭素排出原単位は0.35 kgCO2/kWhであった。一方、日本国内の系統電力の二酸化炭素排出原単位は0.53 kgCO2/kWh程度であり、発電コストおよび二酸化炭素排出削減の両者の観点から、化学ループ法の優位性を示すことができた。
    続いて、再生可能エネルギーを利用した化学ループ法による二酸化炭素利用の技術評価を行った。太陽電池の余剰電力による水電解から生成した水素を用いて、金属酸化物の還元と後続の二酸化炭素による金属酸化物の再酸化から一酸化炭素を得るプロセスについて検討を行った。種々の金属酸化物を熱力学の観点から検討し、鉄・マンガン系金属酸化物の優位性が示唆された。得られる一酸化炭素の濃度と生成効率の間にはトレードオフの関係があるが、10~11%程度の一酸化炭素の生成効率が得られることが示された。

    In this study, material design was conducted in combination with ionic-electronic transport and dynamic changes in reaction / transport / morphology in redox cycles between charge and discharge, and a new electrochemical system with functions of energy storage and power generation was proposed based on high-performance fuel cell technology. We investigated active materials which enable fast hydrogen generation reaction with ionic and electron transport properties, and developed carrier particles realizing high redox reaction rates and stability. In addition, an extremely efficient proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFC) was designed, and a prototype cell was developed. Finally, we designed an energy storage fuel cell system consisting of the developed carrier particles and PCFC, and proposed the high-performance and economical system.

    化学ループ法と再生可能エネルギーを融合させた新規なシステムの提案として、二酸化炭素の有効利用を指向し、メタン酸化あるいは熱分解とカップリングさせた二酸化炭素の還元反応による一酸化炭素生成システムの検討を行った。このシステムは2つの反応器から構成され、その反応器内部を酸素キャリア粒子である酸化鉄/鉄粒子が循環する(化学ループ法)。その際、メタンの熱分解による炭素粒子の析出が酸素キャリア粒子上で生じる。この反応は吸熱反応であり、以下の反応式で表される。
    CH4 + 3CO2 → 4CO+2H2O △H (800℃) = 346 kJ (1)
    この吸熱反応の熱は太陽熱によって供給されることを想定した。高温の熱が利用できない場合は、メタンの熱分解反応から生成した水素の一部を燃焼させ、得られた高品位熱を用いることを想定した(式2)。
    CH4 + 1.8CO2 + 0.6O2 → 2.8CO+2H2O △H (800℃) = -11 kJ (2)
    平衡計算により、反応器内で燃料気体と酸素キャリア粒子の向流で反応を行った場合に、一酸化炭素の収量が最も高くなることが明らかになった。この反応システムは、2つの流動層と1つのライザーから構成されることを想定した。このシステムにおいて、850℃で水蒸気をライザーに導入することで、1 molのメタン消費に対し2.7 molの CO を純度 84% で得られることがわかった。さらに、メタンの熱分解を加速する酸素キャリア粒子の開発も行った。プロトン伝導体であるBaZr0.9Y0.1O3 (BZY)を用いたFe/BZY複合粒子を用いることで、メタン熱分解の反応速度が向上することが明らかになった。開発した粒子を提案システムに導入することで、高効率な化学ループシステムの構築が可能になる。

    Fast hydrogen energy conversion systems were developed in combination with solid state ionics and chemical-looping technology. For chemical energy conversion cycles: (1) reduction reaction (i.e., chemical energy storage) (2) hydrogen production (3) total oxidation (heat recovery and regeneration of oxygen carriers), we developed a thermochemical-looping system and an electrochemical-looping system. Composite oxygen carriers consisting of an oxide ion electron mixed conductor and a metal oxide were synthesized successfully. Thus we obtained oxygen carriers with good performance on reduction reaction in hydrogen and reoxidation in steam. In addition, we developed a novel proton-conducting fuel cell for an electrochemical-looping system, and examined the feasibility of the proposed system.

    In this study, novel metal-air batteries having high energy density were examined at intermediate temperatures using inorganic ion conductors. A composite ion conductor consisting of microparticles was developed based on unique ion transport at interfaces as well as the development of a single-phase ion conductor. In addition, hydrogen production via steam-iron reaction, i.e., partial oxidation of reduced metal oxide by water vapor was investigated to clarify the effect of support materials on hydrogen production rate. Through the observation of charge and discharge processes in the metal-air batteries, the guiding principle of the system design was also discussed.

    Proton conducting phosphoric glassy electrolyte was investigated. It is found that the interface between glassy phase and micro crystalline particle generated in the glass matrix enhances the proton conductivity. This result provides a principle of a material design for a fast proton conductor working at around 150-300℃. We also investigated electro-oxidation of alcohols such as ethanol, ethylene glycerol and glycerol, using an intermediate temperature fuel cell working at around 250℃. It is observed that the alcohols can be oxidized rapidly at the intermediate temperature. The reaction mechanisms were also calcified through the electrochemical measurements.

    中温域(150-300℃)で作動する新規固体電解質形燃料電池の開発を目指し、酸素酸塩の一種のプロトン伝導性電解質であるリン酸二水素セシウム(CsH2PO4:以下CDPと略記する)による電解質膜の開発と中温域における電極表面反応の特性について検討を行ってきた。今年度の検討では、CDP/シリカ複合体のプロトン伝導特性の検討およびアルコール燃料によるアノード電極特性について検討を行った。
    (1)<シリカマトリクス中のプロトン伝導性酸素酸塩の相転移挙動と電気伝導率の相関>
    CDPとメソ多孔質シリカとの複合化がプロトン導電率に顕著な影響を与える現象について検討を行った。導電率測定の結果から、CDP/SiO2複合電解質においては、メソ多孔質シリカの添加によって昇・降温に対する導電率の温度依存性が著しいヒステリシス現象を示すことが明らかとなった。すなわち、シリカマトリクス中では、CDPの高プロトン伝導相(立方晶)が転移温度以下においても安定に保持される過冷却現象が観測された。導電率測定、熱分析およびラマン分光測定を通じて、この現象はCDP/SiO2界面での応力によって構造相転移の際に高いエネルギー障壁がもたらされたために生じたと推定された。従って、CDP/SiO2複合体は、歪みエネルギーによってそのプロトン伝導特性が支配されるきわめてユニークな系であることが示された。
    (2)<CDPを電解質に用いた中温域におけるアルコール類の電極反応評価>
    燃料多様化の観点から中温域(250℃)でのアルコール類の電極酸化反応の評価を行った。CDP電解質を用いたMEAにおけるメタノールとエタノールの電極反応特性について検討を行った。メタノール、エタノール共に低電位領域(0.14V(R肥)近傍)で酸化電流が観測された。また、0.8V以下の電位変化に対するメタノールとエタノールの酸化電流密度に顕著な差は観測されなかった。活性化エネルギーおよび生成物分析の結果から、メタノールの場合は、改質反応によって生成した水素による反応が主であり、一方、エタノールの場合は、熱分解・脱水素反応によって生成した水素による反応が支配的である。以上のように、中温域特有の反応過程が観測され、中温域における直接アルコール形燃料電池への展開が期待できる。

    本研究は、中温度領域(200-300℃)で動作可能な固体電解質型燃料電池の実現化を目指し、プロトン導電性無機材料とセラミクスの混合体による複合電解質膜の開発を日的とした。硫酸水素セシウムと多孔質シリカ粒子(CHS/silica)またはリン酸二水素セシウムと多孔質シリカ粒子(CDP/silica)から構成される複合材料を検討し、本年度はプロトン導電率のさらに高い値の実現化のために、合成法の検討を中心に研究を行った。合成法は、1)粒子を機械的に混合する「固相混合法」、2)材料を水に件濁さ乾燥させて試料を得る「蒸発乾固法」によって行った。CHS、CDP共にシリカ粒子と混合することによって、単体と比較してそれらの導電率が上昇した。また、CHS/silicaおよびCDP/si1ica共に、機械混合法に比べ蒸発乾固法によって作成した試料の方が、特に低温相において導電率の上昇が大きいことがわかった。CHS/silicaに関しては、蒸発乾固法による導電率の上昇は著しく、80℃から140℃の低温領域において、導電率は単体のそれに比べて3桁以上高い値を示した。以上の現象は、試料の粉末X線回折およびラマン分光の測定結果から以下のように推察した。蒸発乾固法により、プロトン導電材料であるCHSとCDPがシリカ粒子の細孔内に浸透する。浸透したプロトン導電材料の結晶構造が崩れ、プロトン導電材料は細孔中で微結晶化もしくはアモルファス化する。この無秩序化した結晶相がプロトン拡散を促進し、その結果、全体の導電率増加が観測されたと考えた。プロトン導電は、結晶内の硫酸イオンやリン酸イオンの束縛回転運動と密接な関係があると考えられている。ラマンスペクトル線形の温度変化から、シリカ多孔質内の無秩序化した結晶相では、より低温から硫酸イオンやリン酸イオンの束縛回転運動が誘起され、プロトン導電率が上昇したと考えられる。

    1. Investigation of anode catalysis for direct methane fuel cell.
    We investigated catalytic activities for methane steam reforming and carbon deposition with Ni-YSZ (nickle-yittria-stabilized zirconia) and Ni-ScSZ (nickel-scandia-stabilized zirconia), in order to improve anode-catalytic activity for direct methane solid oxide fuel cells. No differences were observed between Ni-YSZ and Ni-ScSZ in terms of the reaction rate for methane steam reforming. On the other hand, it was found that the amoun of carbon that deposited through the reaction of methane pyrolysis on Ni-ScSZ was larger than that on Ni-YSZ. Laser raman spectroscopic measurement appeared that graphite-like carbons mainly deposited on Ni-ScSZ cermet, while amorphous-like carbons deposited on Ni-YSZ cermet. It is considered that the difference of chemical feature og carbons is caused by physical feature of Ni like particle size.
    2. Development of anode electo-catalyst for direct methanol fuel cell.
    One of the main problems of the direct methanol fuel cell is the insufficient activity of the anode catalyst due to the poisoning of the anode catalyst by intermediate species such CO formed through methanol oxidation. We found that addition of titania or heteropolyacid to Pt catalyst enhanced the methanol electro-oxidation. The mechanism of enhancement of methanol electro-oxidation was studied by impedance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In the case of Pt/titania catalyst, the interaction between Pt and CO is weaker on titania than that on carbon support, and thus, poisoning of Pt catalyst is suppressed in the case of Pt/titania. Heteropolyacid, on the contrary, does not directly contribute to the methanol electro-oxidation. It is considered that improvement of protonic conductivity in the anode, which is induced by heteropolyacid, assisted the methanol-electro oxidation.
