    Abstract

    This paper presents the first investigation into how the dry etching depth of the reinforcement layer in perfluorinated polymer optical fibers (PF‐POFs) influences radial stress distribution. Using finite element method simulations, we model the PF‐POF structure based on the actual dry‐etched profiles achieved through reactive ion etching (RIE). The results demonstrate that increasing the etching depth leads to higher radial stress in both the core and cladding layers when strain is applied longitudinally. These findings suggest that RIE processes present a feasible method for tuning the sensitivity of PF‐POF‐based strain sensors. © 2025 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC.

    We propose a deep generative model for 3D shapes that incorporates structural mechanics parameters, and a dataset of 6667 shapes created by topology optimization. Our model is based on DeepSDF, a decoder-type neural network that implicitly represents shapes as signed distance functions (SDFs). We extend DeepSDF to condition the shape generation on structural mechanics parameters, such as strain energy, load direction, volume, and dimension. We also introduce positional encoding to improve the spatial resolution of the model. Our dataset consists of various 3D shapes computed by a linear topology optimization method using the Building-Cube method. We use the strain energy as a quantitative indicator of the structural performance of the shapes. We train our model on the dataset and evaluate its ability to generate 3D shapes reflecting structural mechanics parameters. Our results indicate that our model can produce 3D shapes with high fidelity and diversity, and achieve an average reconstruction accuracy of 88.8% for the test shapes. Our model and dataset open up new possibilities for 3D shape generation and structural design using deep learning.

    Abstract

    This study explores the impact of a micro dry-etching technique on strain sensing based on multimode interference in a perfluorinated polymer optical fiber (POF). We demonstrate a drastic shift in strain sensitivity, from +34 nm/% in a non-etched POF to -981 nm/% in the etched POF. This notable change may be attributed to the excitation of the axially asymmetrical modes in the etched POF, which is confirmed through simulation on the stress distribution across the core. In addition, a critical wavelength for multimode interference is observed in a POF.

    The topology optimization helps realize highly-rigid yet lightweight vehicle bodies for lower CO2 emissions. We developed a largescale nonlinear topology optimization method that simultaneously addresses linear (torsional stiffness and vibration) problems and nonlinear (crashworthiness) problems to control energy absorption by the vehicle body structure during a collision. The optimization of the entire vehicle body model produced a rigid truss-like structure, and all the objective functions converged to the desired level. Consequently, an optimal shape that can be used as a reference for designing a car body frame structure and that simultaneously satisfies stiffness, crashworthiness and NVH performance requirements was obtained.

    The topology optimization helps realize highly rigid yet lightweight multi-material vehicle bodies for lower CO2 emissions. We developed a topology optimization method aimed at minimization of the mass of multiple materials, with stiffness, dynamic large deformation, and vibration performance requirements as constraints. Applying this method to an L-shaped member with steel and aluminum materials, we achieved an optimal structure and all the objective functions converged to the desired level. Consequently, an optimal shape was obtained that places each material in the right place, simultaneously satisfies stiffness, dynamic large deformation, and vibration performance requirements, and minimizes the mass.
