The accurate detection of unknown per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) transformation products (TPs) is essential for elucidating degradation pathways and advancing remediation strategies. Herein, we developed a workflow that combined Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) with a paired mass distance (PMD) network. This study achieved high throughput profiling of PFAS TPs with mDa resolving power and sub-ppm mass error. UV treatment revealed chain-shortening pathways, while plasma treatment uncovered competing mechanisms of chain shortening and lengthening, generating oxygen-rich TPs with increased hydrophilicity. Specifically, UV treatment of a 15-PFAS mixture and contaminated natural water showed disappearance of 7 unknown PFAS homologues and the emergence of 12 unknown PFAS homologues. Despite PFAS persistence under UV exposure, previously undetected low-abundance PFAS species were identified, indicating non-negligible photochemical transformation. Under plasma treatment of isolated PFOS, 39 unknown PFAS homologues including 142 suspect and 34 unknown PFAS TPs were identified, highlighting the extensive transformation of emerging and persistent PFAS. Overall, our approach enabled accurate and high-throughput profiling of unknown PFAS TPs and their degradation pathways, providing new insights into persistent unknown PFAS.

Lake eutrophication affects the molecular composition of aquatic dissolved organic matter (DOM) and halogenated disinfection byproducts (Xn-DBPs). However, the effects of autochthonous DOM on the Xn-DBPs formation during disinfection of natural eutrophic water from the perspective of biological metabolism are still poorly revealed. Herein, the natural urban eutrophic lake (UEL) water with slight eutrophication was employed to elucidate the discrepancies in Xn-DBPs formation between autochthonous and allochthonous DOM based on the ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry. The number and its proportion of nitrogenous Xn-DBPs in chlorinated UEL water samples were significantly larger (p < 0.05) than those for chlorinated SRNOM. Microbes dominated by Microcystis contributed largely to releasing autochthonous DOM for Xn-DBPs formation upon disinfection. The Xn-DBPs species mainly derived from microorganisms were highly saturated, reduced, bioavailable, nitrogenous, and toxic but lowly oxidized and aromatic than terrestrially derived Xn-DBPs species. Moreover, for the first time, the connection between microbial lipid metabolism and Xn-DBPs species exclusively identified in chlorinated UEL water indicated the considerable contribution of lipid metabolites to saturated Xn-DBPs species. The specific biochemical mechanism of Xn-DBPs formation from autochthonous DOM caused by the lysis of microbe cells highlighted the significant contribution of microbial metabolic activities, particularly lipid metabolism, to the generation of highly saturated and nitrogenous Xn-DBPs during chlorination. This study has also reported a novel data interpretation paradigm for Xn-DBPs research, deepening our understanding towards the formation mechanisms of microbe-derived Xn-DBPs species from the view of microbial metabolic pathways.

Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) has become a cutting-edge technique for molecular characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and trace organic contaminants. Nevertheless, FT-ICR MS is rarely applied to simultaneously elucidate DOM chemodiversity and quantify the concentrations of trace organic contaminants. Compared to conventional solid-phase extraction (SPE), pH-dependent fractionation of DOM molecules using a sequential SPE strategy significantly enhanced the recovery of dissolved organic carbon and yielded more chemical formulas for DOM from environmental samples (p < 0.05). The sequential SPE at circumneutral pH provided exclusive isolation of some hydrogen-rich and oxygen-poor molecules, caused a 5-fold reduction in matrix effects, and improved the detection limits for organic contaminants. The chemical structure of a typical wastewater indicator, sucralose, was successfully validated using FT-ICR MS analysis with tandem mass spectrometry and hydrogen/deuterium exchange measurements. With the standard addition method, the limits of detection and quantitation of FT-ICR MS for sucralose in DOM extracts isolated at circumneutral pH were estimated to be 0.26 and 0.87 μg/L, respectively. The concentrations of sucralose in a representative urban lake measured by FT-ICR MS (e.g., 0.9-4.1 μg/L) were comparable to those determined by liquid chromatography coupled to an Orbitrap mass analyzer. The findings of this study expand application of FT-ICR MS in environmental research by highlighting its potential for identifying trace organic contaminants, quantifying their concentrations, and elucidating the chemodiversity of DOM to inform contaminant sources in aquatic systems.

The unrivaled mass resolving power and subppm mass error enable the application of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) for nontargeted screening of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Few automated FT-ICR MS methods exist for nontargeted analysis of PFAS in solutions containing other dissolved organic matter. In this study, isotopic pattern analysis and dynamic homologous series inspection were complementarily employed in the FTMSDeu algorithm to simultaneously assign chemical formulas for PFAS and other organic molecules, with an overall assignment accuracy of 91.2% for 1,802 unique PFAS formulas and their 11,634 isotopic formulas. The negative effects of fluorine-related isobaric isotopes with sub-mDa mass differences on formula assignment for PFAS and natural organic matter were addressed by an empirical F/(H + X) rule and the adoption of a threshold for the isotopic formula number plus the homologous series number. There were 203 unique PFAS formulas containing one novel PFAS formula, C9H6O4S1I1F11, identified in a fluoropolymer industry-impacted river water sample using our algorithm for analyzing FT-ICR MS spectra. Overall, the results of this study highlighted the great potential of the updated FTMSDeu algorithm for nontargeted and high-throughput chemical assignment for the FT-ICR MS spectra of complex mixtures containing PFAS and dissolved organic matter from real environmental samples.

The treatment of antibiotic wastewater often faces the challenge of simultaneously and effectively degrading multiple components under complex conditions. To address this challenge, magnetite nanoparticles doped ultrafine activated charcoal powder (MNPs/UACP), which effectively catalyzed the decomposition of H2O2 into •OH and HO2•, was prepared using chemical co-precipitation. Under optimum conditions (i.e., tetracycline (TC) concentration = 100 ppm, pH = 3, H2O2 concentration = 4.9 mM, catalyst dosage = 0.5 g/L), the 50% MNPs/UACP-H2O2 system achieved 97.5% TC removal within 180 min, driven by the synergistic action between adsorption and catalytic oxidation. The stability of 50% MNPs/UACP in recycling was evaluated through repeated reaction cycles, demonstrating that the TC removal efficiency remained at 91.0% even after five cycles. The competition among TC, oxytetracycline (OTC), and chloramphenicol (CAP) in the MNPs/UACP-H2O2 system was closely related to the catalytic oxidation performance, and increasing the proportion of MNPs in MNPs/UACP to above 50% effectively reduced the competition, optimizing degradation efficiency. This study is among the first to provide a comprehensive understanding of adsorption-catalytic oxidation coupled system, offering new insights for broad environmental applications.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) offers great potential for pollutant removal and bioenergy recovery. However, it faces challenges when using livestock manure (LSM) as a feedstock given its high content of refractory materials (e.g., lignocellulose, long-chain carbohydrates, lipids, and crude protein). This would significantly inhibit AD-microbial activities, reduce organic transformation efficiency and limit gas production. To overcome this, multifunctional metal-doped hydrochars (HCs) were introduced here as AD supplements/accelerators, given that LSM degradation under AD results in complex dissolved organic matter (DOM). To assess this, the current study investigates the molecular interactions/transformations within DOM during LSM-AD coupled with metal-doped HCs, via batch-mode experiments. Expansive data mining techniques were employed to analyze DOM using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Substantial increments in peptide-like along with decrements in highly unsaturated-like molecules were observed in HC@MnCl2 containing-system. This indicates an increased capability for substrate hydrolysis and potential utilization of soluble microbial products (SMPs) (i.e., highly unsaturated-like molecules), leading to enhanced methane recovery (223.23 mL/g-VSadded, 1.77 times more than the control). However, accumulation of DOM-highly unsaturated molecules (i.e., a lack of SMPs' degradation) accompanied with low methane production (39.68 mL/g-VSadded) was noticed for HC@NiFe2O4. DOM reactivity during LSM-AD was validated via paired mass difference molecular network, indicating predominance of CHO and N-containing groups' transformations for HC@MnCl2 and HC@NiFe2O4, respectively. Potential metabolites and abundant pathways were verified via KEGG database. This study improves our understanding of LSM-AD-DOM complex transformation matrix, the fate of bioavailable/recalcitrant compounds, and identification of potential DOM regulators from thousands of molecules.

Recent research has discussed the positive impacts of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) on bioprocesses producing either hydrogen (H2) or methane (CH4). The enhancement has been explained by mechanisms such as direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), metal corrosion, and dissimilatory reduction. Such interactions could induce further benefits, such as controlling oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), mitigating toxicants, promoting enzymatic activity, and altering the microbiome, which have not yet been comprehensively discussed. Factors like metal type, oxidation state, and size of NPs are crucial for their reactivity and corresponding responses. This review discusses how different redox potentials of metals can regulate metabolic pathways and how NPs and their reactive ions can eliminate toxicants (e.g., sulfate) and enhance the activity of intra- and extracellular enzymes. The enrichment of responsive microorganisms in correlation with NPs is further discussed. A better understanding of the multifaceted role of metal-based NPs can guide potential new incorporation strategies to improve bioprocesses.

While the industrial sectors have recently focused on producing bioplastic materials, the utilization of edible feedstocks and the generation of wastes and byproducts during the bioplastic synthesis process might delay achieving the environmental sustainability strategy. To overcome these limitations related to bioplastic industrialization, this study focuses on synthesizing bioplastics from waste sources, followed by recycling its end-of-life (e.g., spent and exhausted) material into biochar. Sweet potato peel waste, banana pseudo-stems, and cooking oil waste were used to extract starch, cellulose, and glycerol (a plasticizer) involved in bioplastic manufacturing, respectively. It was found that the cellulose content of 30% w w-1 in bioplastic maintained the best physicochemical, mechanical, and biodegradability properties, recommending a high applicability for food packaging. The exhausted bioplastic was then pyrolyzed to maintain a biochar yield of 32.60 ± 0.89%, avoiding the risk of secondary pollution from waste material disposal. This biochar was utilized to treat wastewater generated from the bioplastic synthesis process, showing the optimum adsorption factors of biochar dosage = 3.81 g L-1, time = 102 min, and solution pH = 7.81. The combined bioplastic production, waste pyrolysis, and wastewater treatment scheme could earn profits from biomaterial sales, carbon credit, and pollution reduction shadow price, maintaining a 6.78-year payback period and a 12.09% internal rate of return. This integrated framework depicted better contributions to the mid-point/end-point life cycle assessment impact categories than the only bioplastic production scenario. This study contributed towards achieving several sustainable development goals (SDGs), including SDG#3: human health protection, SDG#6: wastewater treatment, and SDG#12: waste recycling.

Acidic fermentation (AF) of organic waste/wastewater generates valuable byproducts, including hydrogen, volatile fatty acids, and ethanol; however, its sensitivity to pH drops limits the stability and efficiency of the process. A reversal process, the acidic chemical treatment of concrete waste (CW) to recycle its aggregates, generates calcium hydroxide, which can serve as buffering agent. Meanwhile, integrating both processes can introduce a sustainable win-win approach, which is the aim of this study. To assess this approach, a series of batch AF experiments were conducted at 50 °C and pH 5.5, using glucose as the substrate. Cementitious specimen (1.5 × 1.5 × 0.8 cm) was supplemented to each 200 mL-fermenter. Unamended fermenters, with and without additional NaHCO3-buffering, were used as controls to compare with the amended ones. Introducing cementitious specimens to AF increased H2-production by 2-fold and 1.7-fold compared to controls with and without NaHCO3-addition, respectively, after three consecutive feed-cycles. The surface analysis of incorporated specimen confirmed the Ca, Al, Mg, and Si leaching. The AF efficiency and resulting cementitious mass reduction were further assessed at different organic loads and specimens' volume, surface area, and porosity (by changing water-to-cement [W/C] ratio). Increasing the organic load from 10 to 20 g-glucose/L resulted in lower H2-production, higher specimen mass reduction (up to ∼32%), and higher Ca2+ release (up to 2 g/L); however, no significant effect was observed when using specimens with higher W/C ratio or surface area. Moreover, the presence of cementitious specimens significantly influenced the microbial composition, leading to notable developments in the abundant genera Thermoanaerobacterium and Bacillus. This study presents a novel approach to sustainably enhancing AF process using CW as both an additive and a treatable substance, with reusable aggregates as a byproduct. It provides valuable insights for optimizing the process and guiding future practical applications. This includes considering various concrete compositions, adjusting organic load conditions, and evaluating long-term stability in larger-scale systems.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is essential in biological treatment, yet its specific roles remain incompletely understood. This study introduces a machine learning (ML) framework to interpret DOM biodegradability in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of sludge, incorporating a thermodynamic indicator (λ). Ensemble models such as Xgboost and LightGBM achieved high accuracy (training: 0.90-0.98; testing: 0.75-0.85). The explainability of the ML models revealed that the features λ, measured m/z, nitrogen to carbon ratio (N/C), hydrogen to carbon ratio (H/C), and nominal oxidation state of carbon (NOSC) were significant formula features determining biodegradability. Shapley values further indicated that the biodegradable DOM were mostly formulas with λ lower than 0.03, measured m/z value higher than 600 Da, and N/C ratios higher than 0.2. This study suggests that a strategy based on ML and its explainability, considering formula features, particularly thermodynamic indicators, provides a novel approach for understanding and estimating the biodegradation of DOM.

Anaerobic biotechnology for wastewaters treatment can nowadays be considered as state of the art methods. Nonetheless, this technology exhibits certain inherent limitations when employed for industrial wastewater treatment, encompassing elevated substrate consumption, diminished electron transfer efficiency, and compromised system stability. To address the above issues, increasing interest is being given to the potential of using conductive non-biological materials, e,g., iron sulfide (FeS), as a readily accessible electron donor and electron shuttle in the biological decontamination process. In this study, Mackinawite nanoparticles (FeS NPs) were studied for their ability to serve as electron donors for p-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB) anaerobic reduction within a coupled system. This coupled system achieved an impressive p-CNB removal efficiency of 78.3 ± 2.9% at a FeS NPs dosage of 1 mg/L, surpassing the efficiencies of 62.1 ± 1.5% of abiotic and 30.6 ± 1.6% of biotic control systems, respectively. Notably, the coupled system exhibited exclusive formation of aniline (AN), indicating the partial dechlorination of p-CNB. The improvements observed in the coupled system were attributed to the increased activity in the electron transport system (ETS), which enhanced the sludge conductivity and nitroaromatic reductases activity. The analysis of equivalent electron donors confirmed that the S2- ions dominated the anaerobic reduction of p-CNB in the coupled system. However, the anaerobic reduction of p-CNB would be adversely inhibited when the FeS NPs dosage exceeded 5 g/L. In a continuous operation, the p-CNB concentration and HRT were optimized as 125 mg/L and 40 h, respectively, resulting in an outstanding p-CNB removal efficiency exceeding 94.0% after 160 days. During the anaerobic reduction process, as contributed by the predominant bacterium of Thiobacillus with a 6.6% relative abundance, a mass of p-chloroaniline (p-CAN) and AN were generated. Additionally, Desulfomonile was emerged with abundances ranging from 0.3 to 0.7%, which was also beneficial for the reduction of p-CNB to AN. The long-term stable performance of the coupled system highlighted that anaerobic technology mediated by FeS NPs has a promising potential for the treatment of wastewater containing chlorinated nitroaromatic compounds, especially without the aid of organic co-substrates.

This work presents the recyclability of waste plastics into mechanically strong water-resistant carbon foam by chemical blowing method and low-temperature carbonization. Waste polystyrene (PS) was used as a precursor. The synthetic carbon foam (CF) was characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), C-H-N-S elemental analyzer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal constants analyzer and universal compression tester. The synthesized carbon foam exhibits a low density (0.32 g/cm3), low thermal conductivity (0.074 W/m.K), high compressive strength (58 MPa) and high strength/density ratio (181 MPa/g/cm3). The synthesized carbon foam is a potential candidate for thermal insulation in energy-saving buildings and the technology is a simple, cheap, and sustainable approach to managing waste plastics.

Recently, groundwater resources have been subjected to negative impacts from various natural and anthropogenic factors worldwide. Hence, great efforts have been conducted in the literature to find the best management strategies for protection against groundwater quantity shortage and aquifer material contamination. Simulation-optimization (S-O) modeling has been considered one of the most feasible options for groundwater management, providing high accuracy in understanding the complex real-world water issues. This review study aims at clarifying the concepts, techniques, and stepwise methodologies of both simulation models and optimization algorithms, in addition to the applications of the integrated S-O approach in solving groundwater problems. Besides, the linkages between applications of the S-O framework and sustainable development goals (SDGs) from quantity and quality perspectives are illustrated to show the expected beneficial outcomes for various socio-economic and environmental issues in different fields. Based on this review, conclusions are drawn that may be useful for future studies related to groundwater conservation, management, and planning.

  • Recent Applications of Flash Flood Hazard Assessment Techniques: Case Studies from Egypt and Saudi Arabia Reviewed

    Advanced Engineering Forum   47   101 - 110   2022.8

Flash floods are severe natural disasters due to their suddenness, frequency, and destruction. Every year, flash floods occur in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which are located in the heart of the Middle East. Extensive areas in Egypt and Saudi Arabia are covered by mountainous topography. Intense rainfall can generate flash floods with their magnitude dependent on geomorphology and storm characteristics. Flash flood hazard assessment is a feasible way to mitigate potential damage and losses. Illumination, review, and comparison of assessment techniques of flash flood hazards represent an urgent necessity to evaluate advances and challenges in this discipline. Google-scholar and Scopus were used to collect 50 recent scientific papers, most of them published between 2011 and 2021, using the keywords: floods, hazards, assessment, Egypt, Saudi Arabia. Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information systems (GIS) are the cornerstones of these studies, which include the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and geoprocessing tools. The two items facilitate the calculation of morphometric parameters. Dividing the area and determining the hazard level were the main steps in flash flood hazard assessment. The considered studies relied on varied sets of morphometric parameters that ranged from 3 to 24 morphometric parameters. Area, ruggedness ratio, basin shape index, stream frequency, slope index, and drainage density are the common parameters in the assessment of flash flood hazards. In a flood zone, buildings made from brick have better sustainability in terms of both global warming mitigation and life cycle cost than other materials. Future studies are essential to illustrate the relationships between different morphometric parameters and flash flood hazard degree through field data and define a reliable unified set of morphometric parameters to assess the flash flood hazard degree.

It is important to understand complexation between humic substances and iron in view of the assessment of iron bioavailability in natural water environment. In this study, iron complexation by humic substances from a variety of origins were investigated by measuring stability constant and complexation capacity using the competitive ligand method. In addition, relationship between such complexation parameters and chemical properties of humic substances was examined. Statistically significant positive correlation between the complexation capacity and amount of aromatic carbons of humic substances (as determined by 13C-NMR) was provided. Therefore, functional groups resident in aromatic region are likely responsible for iron coordination. In addition, stability constant has significant correlation with sulfer and nitrogen content of humics (as determined by elemental analysis), suggesting that sulfonic and amino groups bind to iron with higher stability constant.

In this study, we investigated i) relationship between habitat type and qualitative and quantitative characteristics of deposited sediment and (ii) the characteristics of deposited sediment and respiration activity of the sediment as determined by oxygen consumption rate in a floodplain of the Tagliamento River. Field observation indicated that C/N ratio and size of sediment increased in upstream-connected backwater and main stream, while habitats with high abundance of trees provided high density of fine particulate sediment (FPS) as well as high content of fine particulate organic matter (FPOM). We confirmed that the FPS density and FPOM content have strong correlation with dissolved oxygen consumption rate, suggesting that the oxygen consumption rate in water column is influenced by habitat type and quality and quantity of sediments.

Effect of pH and ionic strength on the ligand exchange reaction between ferric fulvic acid and siderophore (desferrioxamine B) was examined in the range from pH 6.0 to 9.0 and ionic strength from 0.01 to 0.7 M. The results showed that higher pH rendered higher ligand exchange reaction rate in the pH greater than 8.0. On the other hand, in the pH below 8.0, the ligand exchange rate constants was found to vary less than an order of magnitude. Ionic strength resulted in insignificant changes of the ligand exchange rate constants. These results suggest that pH plays important role in the ligand exchange reaction in coastal and seawaters and the lakes under algal bloom where pH typically exceeds 8.0.

The effect of divalent cations (Me: Ca2+ and Mg2+) on the ligand-exchange kinetics of Fe (III) -fulvic acid complex and desferrioxamine B (DFOB) was examined by spectrophotometrically measuring the rate of Fe (III) -DFOB complex formation at the various concentrations of Me found in natural water (0-50 mM) . A kinetic model for ligand-exchange incorporating the effects of Me was also developed. The model includes the following two pathways: (1) a disjunctive pathway where Fe (III) -fulvic acid complex initially dissociates followed by complexation of free Fe (III) by DFOB; and (2) an adjunctive pathway where DFOB directly associates with the Fe (III) -fulvic acid complex followed by dissociation of the ternary complex (DFOB-Fe (III) -fulvic acid) to form Fe (III) -DFOB. The ligand-exchange rates of both pathways were accelerated in the presence of Me. The enhanced rates were well explained by considering the ternary complex formation of Me and Fe (III) -fulvic acid complex.

Iron is one of the most important micronutrients for the growth of M.aeruginosa, one of the cyanobacteria forming toxic blooms in closed freshwater systems of the world. Recent studies have shown that the extracellular reduction of ferric iron mediated by superoxide is a key step in the process of iron acquisition by some marine phytoplankton. However, little is known about the iron uptake associated with superoxide generation. We investigated the effect of extracellular superoxide generation on the growth and iron uptake of M. aeruginosa. Our results suggested that superoxide generation associated with cell surface and ferrous iron form can participate in iron uptake.

Superoxide radical produced during algal metabolism is one of the most important agents that contribute to the transformation of the Fe(III)-organic ligand complex to more bioavailable Fe(II). In this work, we investigated the kinetics of superoxide-mediated Fe(II) production from Fe(III) complexed by citrate (Fe(III)Cit) in coastal seawater on the basis of a laboratory experiment and a kinetic model. To simulate a coastal environment, Fe(III)Cit samples with various ratios of citrate concentration to iron concentration (ligand/Fe ratio) were incubated for five minutes to one week in seawater medium. Then, Fe(II) production rate was spectrophotometrically measured by detecting the ferrous-ferrozine complex. During the measurement, superoxide was constantly generated by oxidizing xanthine. Fe(II) production rate generally decreased with incubation time, since Fe(III)Cit as a source of Fe(II) gradually dissociated to form less reactive iron oxyhydroxide in coastal seawater. However, when the ligand/Fe ratio was sufficiently high, the dissociation of Fe(III)Cit was suppressed and Fe(II) was formed at a relatively higher rate over one week. These results demonstrated that Fe(II) production rate is largely influenced by ligand/Fe ratio and incubation time. The kinetic model developed was in good agreement with the experimentally determined Fe(II) production rates.

We have developed a kinetic model for ligand-exchange reaction of ferric iron-citrate complex (FeCit) with desferrioxamine B (DFB) in the presence of divalent metals (Ca and Mg). The kinetic model considers (1) a disjunctive pathway where DFB binds to Fe following the dissociation of FeCit and (2) an adjunctive pathway where FeDFB is formed via the direct association of DFB to FeCit. The rate constants for the complex reaction in the disjunctive pathway estimated from the model well described the experimentally determined rate constants. In the adjunctive pathway, the reaction rate was found to be affected by the concentrations of divalent cations and citrate. The kinetic data in the adjunctive pathway was well explained by involving the effect of direct association of divalent cation to the precursor complex. The results indicated the significant effect of divalent cations on the kinetics for the ligandexchange of iron-citrate complex with DFB.

The kinetics of the formation and dissociation of the Fe(III)-NOM (natural organic matter) complex in coastal waters was investigated using the competitive ligand method. The rate constants for the formation and dissociation of the Fe(III)-NOM complex were determined by fitting a model to observed data. The iron-binding capacity of NOM, which is required for the determination of the rate constants, was initially measured by the ion exchange method. The rate constants of the formation of the Fe(III)-NOM complex ranged from 2.6×106 to 7.3×106 M-1·s-1. A discrete ligand model for the dissociation kinetics of the Fe(III)-NOM complex yielded rate constants from 6.9×10-4 to 2.0×10-3 s-1 for weak-binding ligands and from 1.6×10-5 to 8.3×10-5 s-1 for strong-binding ligands, respectively. The kinetics of the Fe(III)-NOM complex in coastal water was then predicted using the estimated rate constants. The model prediction showed that the dissociation of the complexes is relatively slow with a half-life longer than 120 hr. The adsorption peak ratios of oxygen-containing functional groups of NOM calculated from FTIR spectra showed good correlation with both the iron-binding capacity and the rate constants, implying that the ratio is a useful factor for assessing the kinetics of organically complexed iron in coastal water.

In this study, we investigated the spatial and seasonal distributions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron in Matsushima Bay, Japan from November 2003 to October 2004. The chemical characteristics of DOM, such as concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and XAD resin absorbed organic carbon (XOC), UV absorbance, molecular weight and carbon stable isotope ratio, were also studied in the bay and the Takagi River. In the bay, DOC concentration increased particularly in summer. The XOC concentration and molecular weight of DOM decreased along the river to the bay. The carbon isotope ratio of DOM indicated that a significant amount of humic substance was produced in the bay. Dissolved iron concentration rapidly decreased with the increase in salinity from the river to the bay and was extremely low in seawater of high salinity. It was considered that this decrease in dissolved iron concentration was attributable to the precipitation of dissociated iron from organic compounds caused by the increase in the concentration of metal cations as river water meets seawater.

Iron complexed by humic substance (HS) is one of the most essential metals for the growth of aquatic organisms in estuary. In this study, we investigated the equilibrium behavior of humic iron complex with mathematical model. The equilibrium model was developed on the basis of Debye-Huckel theory, which can take account of the potential energy of iron around the surface of HS. The dissociation of iron from HS in estuarine water was described as results of the competition with divalent cations (Mg2+, Ca2+) and the decrease of surface potential of HS with increase of ionic strength. In this model, adsorption sites on HS were divided into two classes depending on the affinity with iron. This classification resulted in the good agreement with the experimental data in artificial estuarine water. Furthermore, the experimental data in NaCl solution was also well explained by using the calculated intrinsic equilibrium constant. The calculated equilibrium constant between adsorption sites and iron exhibited similar value with reported equilibrium constants. In conclusions, developed model could theoretically describe the equilibrium behavior of humic iron complex with the variation of salinity in estuary.

Humic substances (HS) derived from terristrial area play important roles to supply essential minerals for the growth of aquatic organisms in estuaries. Therefore, the watershed management focusing on the transportation of essential minerals from terrestrial area to estuaries is needed for the conservation of estuarine ecosystem. Although it is said that a part of HS coagulates in estuaries with the increase of salinity, its mechanism has not been well-known. In this study, the coagulation model for humic substances in estuaries was developed on the basis of DLVO theory and hydrophobolic interaction which caused a strong attractive force between HS. This attractive force was estimated with hydrophobic index (E254/TOC) of HS and its molecular weight detected by gel chromatography analysis with 254nm spectrophotometer. The developed model could explainthe coagulation mechanism of humic acid according to the decrease of surface potential in estuarine condition. The result of simulation using this model showed that humic acid with intermediate molecular weight around 20k Da easily coagulated at the high salt concentration in estuaries.

Humic iron complex is one of the most essential minerals for the growth of aquatic organisms in estuaries. However, the behavior of humic iron complex has not been known so well in estuaries where salinity widely changes. In this study, the effect of salinity on the behavior of humic iron complex was investigated with the Dando humic and fulvic acids. The increase of salinity, especially divalent cations such as magnesium and calcium ions, enhanced the coagulation of humic substances (HS). When the salt concentration increased from 0 to 30g/L, 81% of dissolved humic acid (HA) and 18% of dissolvedfulvic acid (FA) transformed to the particulate (>0.45μm) due to the coagulation. Gel chromatography analysis with UV spectrometer (254nm) revealed that high molecular weight and hydrophobic fractions of humic substances were important factors relevant to the coagulation. The increase of salinity also enhanced the dissociation of iron from HA and FA. With the increase of salt concentration from 0 to 30g/L, 98% and 88% of iron dissociated from HA and FA, respectively. It was expected that amino and sulfo groups on the surface of HA and FA which possess a high affinity with iron contributed to the subsistence of dissolved iron in estuaries.

Experiments on the leaching of DOM from riverine POM fractions were conducted to investigate the qualitative and quantitative formation of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Amphipods (Gammarus sp.) were fed in the laboratory with preconditioned leaves of Fraxinus excelsior, Alnusincana, and Querrus robur, twigs of Populus nigra, and epilithic algae (periphyton). Amphipods produced two FPOM fractions (L-FPOM: 250-500μm; M-FPOM; 100-250μm). L-FPOM consisted primarily of fecal pellets while M-FPOM was mainly composed of CPOM fragments created by the feeding activity. FPOM fractions and CPOM were exposed in 100ml Erlenmeyer bottles and stirred at 100rpm at 12°C under dark conditions. DOC release rate, UV absorption (E285) and microbial respiration (Biological Oxygen Demand in 3 days) were repeatedly measured over a 14-day period.<BR>FPOM exhibited significantly lower DOC release rate than CPOM in first 24 hours of the experiment while it was slightly higherthan CPOM in the second week. DOM release rate from air-dried leaves (CPOM) was significantly correlated with chlorophyll acontent. Microbial respiration suggested that POM was converted by bacterial community into more refractory compound whilereleasing relatively labile DOM. In addition, POM derived from epilithic algae showed distinct leaching mechanism from allochthonous POM.

Dissolved iron transported from rivers and other terrestrial sources plays important roles in maintaining the coastal and marine productivity. Most of the dissolved iron is likely to be transported from river basins to coastal waters in the form of complexes with dissolved organic matters. However, the molecular level mechanism of transport has not been fully understood. This study therefore aimed to investigate the molecular composition and origin of dissolved organic matters that are highly relevant to dissolved iron via the molecular level analysis using high-resolution mass spectrometry and advanced molecular composition identification algorithms. As a result, 259 dissolved organic molecules highly correlated with dissolved iron were obtained in downstream regions such as coastal waters, and most of them were found to be CHO-type organic matters with small molecular weight and highly decomposed status.

The purpose of this study was to identify the environmental water quality factors that can affect the occurrence of toxic cyanobacteria through the laboratory-based algal culturing experiment in addition to the field survey in semiclosed freshwater lakes (in Japan and Australia). Consequently, this study identified that concentrations of major metals (e.g., calcium etc) and trace metals (e.g., iron, copper, etc.) are tightly related to the occurrence of cyanobacterial toxin (cyanotoxin). Therefore, the management of water qualities focusing on not only traditionally important major nutrients (i.e., nitrogen and phosphorous) but also other water qualities (in particular metals) will be recommended in view of the management of cyanotoxin occurrence in the lakes.

The dynamics of norovirus, one of the causative agent of infectious gastroenteritis, in the estuarine environment is not well understood. In this study, based on the hypothesis that planktons in seawater can be the important carrier of norovirus to oysters, field study was conducted. Norovirus GII RNA were detected from sorted zooplankton and phytoplankton samples, and oyster digestive tissues. The maximum concentrations of norovirus GII RNA were 3900 copies/L in plankton samples, 58 copies/individual of zooplankton, and 2000 copies/g of oyster digestive tissues. DNA metabarcoding analysis indicated that oysters prey on zooplankton (phylums Cercozoa and Ciliophora) and phytoplankton (phylum Chlorophyta, and Ranthkea_octopunctata). Correlation of norovirus GII with some specific planktonic species (e.g., Rathkea_octopunctata, Sarsia_tubulosa) were found, implying the important roles of such species as potential norovirus carrier.

Iron is an essential micronutrient for organisms, as this trace element plays a role in the photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation of primary producers including phytoplankton. In the open ocean, there is a region where growth of phytoplankton is limited due to lack of iron, and in the past decades studies on iron chemical speciation and bioavailability have been advanced particularly in the research area of oceanography. However, knowledge on the iron dynamics in rivers, estuaries and coastal areas are less accumulated, and the effects of human activities on water transport to the coastal areas and biological basic production are in many cases unknown. Therefore, this study has investigated the impact of land use in the river basin to the coastal primary productivity by examining the biogeochemical dynamics (e.g., redox kinetics, coagulation behavior, algal iron uptake) in rivers and coastal area.

Load of dissolved trace metals was dependent on land use such as forest, farmland and urban area. Especially paddy field and urban area showed a high load, indicating that human activities, as well as forest, in terrestrial area are important sources of trace metals supplied to coastal area. As organic matters playing an important role in transportation of trace metals, quantitative and qualitative changes of soil organic matters collected in forest and farmland, which can happen during the transportation due to increase of salinity, were investigated. The result demonstrates the changes were affected by species of tree and crop. In estuaries, flocculation of organic matter makes metals insolubilized. We revealed that behavior of metals there can be categorized into four types: (Fe), (Mn), (Al, V) and (Ni, Cu, Zn) and that iron becomes insolubilized most significantly in the presence of suspended solids and aggregates.

Iron is important factor that control growth and metabolism of phytoplankton in natural waters. Therefore, iron chemical dynamics and bioavailablity have been investigated for the last few decades. Yet, effects of water and environmental factors on iron uptake in actual water environment remained largely unclear, partially because humic substances and other water quality factors were not considered in the previous model where synthetic ligands were often used. In this study, kinetic model for iron transformation and bioavailability was developed based on the kinetic data from phytoplankton incubational experiment under actual natural water conditions where concentrations of humic substances and other water quality factors were manipulated. One of results indicated that phytoplankton is capable of acquiring iron at sufficient amount even under the dark condition, as dark reduction in the presence of humic substances sufficiently produces biologically available ferrous iron form.

The aim of this study was to develop chemical reaction model of organically complexed iron in natural water under solar radiation. At first, the reaction of complex composed of model organic matter and Fe(II) was observed, and rate constants of complexation and dissociation were estimated. Then, the changes of organic matter by radiation were examined. Photolysis of aromatic-like moiety with the higher excitation wavelength was especially high; i.e., it decreased by 50% in 12 hours radiation. On the other hand, protein-like moiety increased by 20%. However, the rate constant of complexation did not show significant change. Although aromatic and humic-like moieties are considered to be related to the complexation with iron, it was indicated that their ability for iron complexation would not change significantly even after partial photolysis.

Although it is important to understand the behavior of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for proper assessment of aquatic ecosystem due to the high reactivity of ROS with a range of molecules and chemical compounds, kinetics and mechanism of ROS redox reactions in particular the factor(s) influencing ROS formation still remain largely unclear. In this study, effect of photochemical reaction of humic substances on ROS generation was investigated, yielding that aromatic content in humic substance is one of major factors responsible for ROS generation (e.g., superoxide and hydrogen peroxide) in sunlit freshwater systems.
