    Electrochemical conversion of underutilized biomass-based glycerol into high-value-added products provides a green approach for biomass and waste valorization. Plus, this approach offers an alternative to biofuel manufacturing procedure, under mild operating conditions, compared to the traditional thermochemical routes. Nevertheless, glycerol has been widely valorized via electrooxidation, with lower-value products generated at the cathode, ignoring the electroreduction. Here, a review of the efficient glycerol reduction into various products via the electrocatalytic reduction (ECR) process was presented. This review has been built upon the background of glycerol underutilization and theoretical knowledge about the state-of-the-art ECR. The experimental understanding of the processing parameter influences towards electrochemical efficiency, catalytic activity, and product selectivity are comprehensively reviewed, based on the recent glycerol ECR studies. We conclude by outlining present issues and highlighting potential future research avenues for enhanced ECR application.

    Heterogeneously catalyzed lignin solvolysis opens the possibility of transforming low value biomass into high value, useful aromatic chemicals, however, its reaction behavior is poorly understood due to the many possible interactions between reaction parameters. In this study, a novel predictive model for bio-oil yield, char yield and reaction time is developed using Random Forest (RF) regression method using data available from the literature to study the impact of surface properties of the catalyst and the weight averaged molecular weight of the lignin (Mw) used in the reaction. The models achieved a coefficient of determination (R2) score of 0.9062, 0.9428 and 0.8327, respectively, and feature importance for each case was explained and tied to studies that provide a mechanistic explanation for the performance of the model. Surface properties and lignin Mw showed no importance to the prediction of bio-oil yield and average pore diameter contributed 3% of feature importance to reaction time.

    <jats:sec>
    <jats:title>Background</jats:title>
    <jats:p>Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 42 loci (P < 5 × 10−8) associated with risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Expanded consortium efforts facilitating the discovery of additional susceptibility loci may capture unexplained familial risk.</jats:p>

    <jats:sec>
    <jats:title>Methods</jats:title>
    <jats:p>We conducted a GWAS in European descent CRC cases and control subjects using a discovery–replication design, followed by examination of novel findings in a multiethnic sample (cumulative n = 163 315). In the discovery stage (36 948 case subjects/30 864 control subjects), we identified genetic variants with a minor allele frequency of 1% or greater associated with risk of CRC using logistic regression followed by a fixed-effects inverse variance weighted meta-analysis. All novel independent variants reaching genome-wide statistical significance (two-sided P < 5 × 10−8) were tested for replication in separate European ancestry samples (12 952 case subjects/48 383 control subjects). Next, we examined the generalizability of discovered variants in East Asians, African Americans, and Hispanics (12 085 case subjects/22 083 control subjects). Finally, we examined the contributions of novel risk variants to familial relative risk and examined the prediction capabilities of a polygenic risk score. All statistical tests were two-sided.</jats:p>

    <jats:title>Results</jats:title>
    <jats:p>The discovery GWAS identified 11 variants associated with CRC at P < 5 × 10−8, of which nine (at 4q22.2/5p15.33/5p13.1/6p21.31/6p12.1/10q11.23/12q24.21/16q24.1/20q13.13) independently replicated at a P value of less than .05. Multiethnic follow-up supported the generalizability of discovery findings. These results demonstrated a 14.7% increase in familial relative risk explained by common risk alleles from 10.3% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 7.9% to 13.7%; known variants) to 11.9% (95% CI = 9.2% to 15.5%; known and novel variants). A polygenic risk score identified 4.3% of the population at an odds ratio for developing CRC of at least 2.0.</jats:p>

    <jats:title>Conclusions</jats:title>
    <jats:p>This study provides insight into the architecture of common genetic variation contributing to CRC etiology and improves risk prediction for individualized screening.</jats:p>

    In this study, pyrolysis of oilfield sludge from Shandong Province, China with oil sludge ash additive was conducted using a stirred tank reactor. The effect of the pyrolysis conditions, such as the temperature, the stirring rate and the use of additive on the recovery ratio and the quality of the oil product were investigated. The results reveal that the recovery ratio of the oil product was improved by increasing the stirring rate and the addition of oil sludge ash. The carbon residue of the oil product from the pyrolysis with the oil sludge ash additive is much lower than the oil product of the pyrolysis with the quartz sand as the additive. The increasing of the oil recovery ratio was considered to be mainly contributed by the physical effects of the oil sludge ash additive. The decreasing of carbon residue value was due to the chemical effects of the metal oxides in the oil sludge ash. To determine the effects of the main metal oxide compounds of the oil sludge ash, a series of pyrolysis experiments of oilfield sludge with SiO_2, Al_2O_3, Fe_2O_3, and CaO were carried out. Then, the chemical characterization of a part of the pyrolytic oil was measured by FT-IR, GC-MS, and NMR analysis to investigate which chemical routes or additives in the pyrolysis process lead to the change of the oil quality.

    This study focuses on finding out the relationship between the catalyst pretreatment procedure and the compositional variation of liquid products from the catalytic reforming process of PP (polypropylene) and PS (polystyrene). We investigated the performance of natural zeolite (NZ) catalyst after HCl pretreatment in three different concentrations and one commercial zeolite catalyst (HY-zeolite) in a two-stage pyrolysis and catalytic reforming process of polypropylene and polystyrene. The results show that the pretreatment in HCl solution could increase the quantity of naphthenes in PP pyrolysis oil. The PS pyrolysis oil is almost aromatic oil.

Set up a microcosm for the domestication of experimental organisms: All three experimental organisms can live in the microcosm for long time. The building of the food chain was completed; 3. Preparation of synthetic and natural microfibers was completed.

    1. Growth inhibition test of Chlorella was completed; 2. Acute immobilization and reproduction test of Daphnia were conducted, respectively.
    The above results have laid the foundation for the following research and experimental work in the next two years.
