    In steel structures, skew thin steel plates serve as panel zones in structures spanning large spaces (e.g., warehouses and gymnasiums). Considerable research has been conducted on the shear buckling of panels due to seismic loads acting on a structure. Conversely, under snow or wind loads, the panel zone may experience compressive and tensile stresses simultaneously from two directions. Considering the economic preference for thin steel plates, evaluating the elastic critical local buckling stresses in the panel zone under biaxial normal stress may provide essential information to structural engineers. In this study, an elastic buckling analysis based on the energy method is performed to clarify the impact of panel geometry and boundary conditions on the elastic local buckling stresses of skew panel zones. As confirmed from the results, the local buckling stresses calculated using the energy method were consistent with those determined using finite element analysis. The findings indicate that a skew angle of up to 30° marginally affects the elastic buckling stress under uniaxial stress. Consequently, engineer-friendly design formulas were developed based on these findings. Comparisons with previous research demonstrated that the buckling loads reported were generally higher than those determined by finite element analysis. The study also established the correlation of the buckling stresses under biaxial stresses, which implied that the skew angle posed minimal influence on buckling stress for skew plates under biaxial stress. Additionally, a method for evaluating this correlation was presented. Engineers can utilize the provided design equations to more efficiently and accurately calculate buckling loads, facilitating a safer and more economical design of structures with skew plates.

    Abstract

    The objective of this study was to analyze the elastic critical local buckling of cold‐formed lipped channel sections using the energy method. A mechanical model and unique displacement functions simulating the local buckling behavior were proposed to consider the plate element interaction. Using the proposed mechanical mode, an analytical formula for local buckling that directly reflects the parameters of the channel member was proposed. Based on the proposed formula, the relationship between the cross‐sectional geometry and local buckling behavior was investigated. In addition, a simplified design equation was proposed. The reliability and effectiveness of the proposed equations were presented by comparing with the results of eigenvalue analysis based on the finite element method.

    The classical design approach for the elastic critical local buckling load of the cold-formed open section (CFOS) neglects the plate element interaction at the cross-section, which compromises the benefits of CFOSs designed for high performance. To derive a novel formula for the local buckling coefficient, taking into account the plate element interaction at the cross-section, a series of displacement functions for expressing the buckling deformations of the web, flanges, and lips caused by local buckling in CFOSs is proposed in this paper. The effect of cross-sectional geometry on the buckling coefficient was investigated using the proposed formula derived from Timoshenko’s plate buckling theory. Further, simplified formulae were proposed for the buckling coefficient and half wavelength of the elastic critical local buckling for practical use. The reliabilities of the proposed formulae were verified by comparing the results obtained from the proposed formulae with the analysis results based on the finite element method and finite strip method.

    Abstract

    The effective cross‐sectional area method for the outstanding leg is utilized as an ineffective area to evaluate the strength in the present Japanese design standard. Given that this evaluation method is fundamentally premised on experimental outcomes derived from relatively thick plates, it must be extended to brace members composed of thin plates. In this study, we conduct bolt joint experiments and numerical analyses on thin‐plate angles and channel members, with the aim to elucidate the elements influencing the efficiency of the joint. We propose a unified bolt joint strength evaluation formula that also considers thin‐plate members.

    Abstract

    This study analyzed the flexural buckling behavior of light‐gauge built‐up compression members joined by self‐drilling screws by using the energy method. A nonconventional mechanical model that simulates the flexural buckling behavior of a built‐up member was proposed, and the contradictions of Bleich's model were described. A simple design formula that directly reflects the parameters of built‐up members was derived based on the proposed model. Furthermore, to ensure flexural buckling as a single unit member, the required stiffening stiffness and number of self‐drilling screws were proposed.

    Abstract

    This research aims to theoretically derive a closed‐form evaluation formula for the coupled local buckling strength of I‐shaped steel members under uniform bending. Power trigonometric functions are used to devise a particular displacement function. Because the function is fast‐converging compared to the Fourier function, it is possible for the buckling deflection to be described using only two terms of the trigonometric function. Subsequently, a closed‐form evaluation equation is proposed based on the displacement function. An eigenvalue analysis based on the finite element method is then conducted to verify the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed equation.

    Oblique plates are utilized in a variety of applications in steel structures such as panel zones. As shear stresses generally act upon panel zones, it is important to evaluate the shear buckling resistance of panel zones, especially as thinner steel plates have been used in recent years. In contrast to the stability problem of rectangular plates, which has been extensively studied, the elastic buckling strengths of oblique plates are not entirely clear, even under basic stress conditions such as uniform shear stress. This study investigated the elastic shear buckling stress of oblique plates. The main goals were to examine the buckling behavior of simply and clamped supported oblique plates and propose convenient and reliable design equations to predict the elastic shear buckling coefficients. By adopting the energy method based on Timoshenko’s plate buckling theory, the influence of the geometry of the oblique plates and the direction of the shear stress were investigated. Furthermore, highly convenient design equations for elastic shear buckling coefficients were proposed. The accuracy of the proposed equation was assessed using extensive parametric studies based on the finite element method using MSC Marc software.

    &nbsp;Square steel tubular columns are widely used in moment resisting frames. The moment resisting frame system will resist the horizontal load action through the flexural manner of the columns. Therefore, the columns will subject the axial force and the bending moment simultaneously. Under the seismic action, the effect of the bending moment that is the result of the shear force subjected to the column will be significant; the structural safety of the column at the ultimate limit state (ULS) shall be guaranteed. Recommendation for Limit State Design of Steel Structures and Recommendation for Plastic Design of Steel Structures specifies the requirements for the column to guarantee sufficient strength and ductility at the ULS. However, the appropriateness of requirements for square steel tubular column is not verified clearly. The test results, where the square steel tubular columns are under compressive axial force with different moment distribution, were reported in the previous papers. In this paper, structural performance evaluation of square steel tubular column is conducted based on the existing test results. Collapse mode, maximum bending moment, plastic deformation capacity, and moment amplification factor are evaluated; comparison study between the current design recommendation is also shown.<br>&nbsp;This study revealed the following results.<br>&nbsp;1) The design requirement (Eq. (2)) that is specified for the column expected to form the plastic hinge provided conservative results. The gap between the collapse mode observed from the testing and that is expected in the design requirements gets larger when the moment distribution will get close to antisymmetric bending moment. In this study, Eq. (10) is shown to evaluate the collapse mode reasonably. Moreover, Eq. (10) still fulfill the required minimum plastic deformation capacity that is stipulated in the recommendations.<br>&nbsp;2) Design strength of the column which will not fulfill the requirements for the column to form plastic hinge showed conservative results when it was computed from current recommendations. The design strength computed from the old version of the recommendation provided more reasonable results.<br>&nbsp;3) Moment amplification factor that is used to evaluate the P&delta; effects was compared with the test result. It was confirmed that some columns showed unconservative results at the ultimate limit state. The column categorized to have no P&delta; effects per Eq. (14) but could not resist full plastic moment (i.e., Mpc) during the test showed large second-order effects. In this case, the maximum bending moment through the column cannot be evaluated appropriately. However, this kind of phenomenon was observed in two specimens only. A further study shall be needed for the evaluation.<br>&nbsp;4) Large deviation was observed at the plastic deformation capacity of the column under the double curvature bending when it was compared with the formula that is proposed for one end bending moment condition. From the regression analysis, the formulae that will evaluate the plastic deformation capacity of the column were shown. The derived formulae are not including the parameter of the width-to-thickness ratio; therefore, further study shall be needed for the proposal.

    &nbsp;In Japan, square steel tubular columns are widely used. When the building is under a seismic action, columns will be subjected to axial force with double curvature bending moment. Therefore, it is important to design the column under these combined loading in the ultimate limit state to guarantee the safety. Recommendation for Limit State Design of Steel Structure (LSD) and Recommendation for the Plastic Design of Steel Structures specify the requirements for column to guarantee sufficient strength and ductility. The plastic deformation capacity of the column that is subjected to compressive axial force with one end monotonic bending moment is ensured more than 3 by LSD. However, deformation capacity of the column that are subjected to compressive axial force with monotonic double curvature bending moment is not shown clearly. Test results that can confirm the appropriateness of LSD requirements for square steel tubular column are limited. It is necessary to gather more data of maximum strength, deformation capacity, and elasto-plastic behavior of square steel tubular columns by testing. Moreover, column that is subjected to compressive axial force is important to take into account second-order effects.<br>&nbsp;In this study, testing where axial force with monotonic double curvature bending moment (end bending moment ratio equal to 0.5) are applied to the columns simultaneously are conducted. Maximum bending moment, plastic deformation capacity, and second-order effect that will be caused by P&delta; moment were evaluated from the test results. Comparison between LSD requirements and test results were also shown.<br>&nbsp;From the test results, followings are found.<br>&nbsp;1) Two types of collapse mechanism are confirmed.<br>&nbsp;i) Local buckling occurred at one end of the column determined the ultimate state and deformation capacity.<br>&nbsp;ii) P&delta; moment determined the moment capacity at the loading point; increment of the bending deflection determined the ultimate state. Local buckling was not observed during the testing.<br>&nbsp;2) When the value of ny&middot;&lambda;c02 is greater than 0.20, second-order effects determined the plastic deformation capacity. Plastic deformation capacity R of the columns that were determined by P&delta; moment had a linear relation between ny&middot;&lambda;c02. When the value of ny&middot;&lambda;c02 is smaller than 0.17, plastic hinge was formed at the end of the column and determined the collapse mechanism. Nominal width-to-thickness ratio equals to 20.8 that was used in the testing had a plastic deformation capacity around 4.0 when it was determined by local buckling collapse.<br>&nbsp;3) Plastic deformation capacity greater than 3 were observed even if the current LSD limitation was not satisfied. However, from the point of view of collapse mechanism, LSD limitation can form a plastic hinge at the end of the column which is expected in design.<br>&nbsp;4) Even if moment amplification factor calculated by LSD is 1.0, the location of the maximum moment may appear in the middle of the column. i) ii)

    In Japan, built-up member composed with light gauge is used for studs of shear wall. Flexural buckling stress of built-up compression member is evaluated by effective slenderness ratio. The effective slenderness ratio of light gauge built-up compression member is proposed for heavy sections; however, it is not verified that it can be adopted in light gauge. In this paper, full scale testing of light gauge built-up members are conducted. From the test results, it is shown that current Standard overestimates the buckling strength. Based on energy equilibrium theory, modified effective slenderness ratio for light gauge built-up member is derived. The validity of the modified effective slenderness ratio is shown with test results.

    本研究は,鋼構造に対する設計行為の明確化および合理化に繋げる鋼構造の設計体系の高度化を図るために,その設計手法が連続かつ統一的となることを目指し,鋼構造部材の使用条件範囲を区分,設定,限定しない統一的な安定性評価手法を構築することを目的としている.具体的には,(1)主要構造部の部材として使用されていない薄い板厚の範囲における部材挙動およびその構造性能の解明,(2)鋼構造部材の軽量化,大断面化に伴う断面形状および補剛等を考慮した周辺部材の簡略化,(3)現行規準,指針における仕様,使用範囲から逸脱している部材の詳細な部材性能評価であり,研究全体は5つのサブテーマから構成されている.
    以上の目的のため,2年目の令和3年度は,以下のサブテーマ「2)圧縮力および曲げを受ける組立部材の安定性評価」,「3)薄板H形断面部材の安定性評価の高度化と接合部への展開」を主に検討し,令和2年度の検討で,新規かつ詳細な検討が必要と判断したサブテーマ「1)圧縮力および引張力を受ける非対称断面部材の弾塑性性能評価」の一部についても継続検討した.
    サブテーマ2)では,様々な接合ピッチを有する薄板非対称断面組立引張材に対する新たな合理的設計式を提案した.圧縮および曲げを受ける組立材の挙動については,その基本的な特性に対する検討は終了しているが,サブテーマ1)の知見および接合要素のモデル化等の詳細な検討が必要と判断し,予定の研究期間を延長して行なうこととした.なお,サブテーマ1)では,薄板非対称断面部材の境界条件に応じた座屈モードの解明および終局耐力評価を行なった.サブテーマ3)では,柱梁接合部および近傍部位の薄板化の可能性とその安定条件を踏まえた設計法に向けた検討を行った.さらに,サブテーマ「4)冷間成形角形鋼管部材の連成座屈不安定挙動の解明」に向けた基礎資料の収集と基礎的検討を開始した.
