<p>Disruption of gas-filled microcapsules under pulsed ultrasound irradiation is experimentally studied. The goal of this study is to evaluate the disruption rate of the polymer-shelled microcapsules as a function of the mean number concentration of the microcapsule population. In the present study, we defined the disruption of a microcapsule as decapsulation of the shell layer followed by exposure of an internal gas bubble, growing to visually detectable size through mass diffusion. An experimental setup has been designed to sonicate two-dimensionally dispersed microcapsules in a planar microchamber. Pulsed ultrasound at 1 MHz is irradiated normal to the chamber from a planar ultrasound transducer. Pure water and glycerol aqueous solution of 30 wt. % were used as the dispersion media. Image processing of the recorded microscopic images yields capsule size distribution and local concentration distribution defined as an inverse of the occupied area of the capsule position (Voronoi area). The mean number concentration is controlled over a wide range from 5 to 200 capsules/mm2, while the mean capsule diameter is controlled between 25 and 40 μm regardless of the concentration. The disruption rate is evaluated comparing the number of disrupted microcapsules (gas bubbles) and the total number of microcapsules in the target area of the ultrasound irradiation. The disruption rate turned out to decrease with the mean concentration and is inversely proportional to the mean concentration for the particular case of the two-dimensional spatial distribution.</p>

<p>The superharmonic resonance of a cantilever beam subject to mechanical ball impacts is investigated numerically for potential vibration energy harvesting. In our device, a multipole magnet array attached on the cantilever moves above a planar coil array fixed on the baseplate of the device, leading to power generation through electromagnetic induction. In the numerical model, the cantilever is assumed to be a single DOF damped mass-spring system, which is coupled with the translational motion of a point mass through the classical collision model. The Fourier amplitudes of the cantilever's displacement have been obtained and compared with the experimental results. It is found that the numerical solution of the superharmonic components shows quantitative agreement with the experiment in the low-frequency range associated with human-induced motions. The excitation region of the superharmonics has been represented as a function of the excitation frequency and the gap distance of the ball motion.</p>

<p>Nonlinear resonance of a cantilever beam under mechanical impacts is investigated experimentally for energy harvesting from human induced low-frequency vibration. In the prototype of this study, a metal ball is used to yield impulsive forces acting upon the cantilever installed in an electromagnetic type vibration energy harvester. A multipole magnet array attached on the cantilever moves above a planar coil fixed on the baseplate of the device, leading to power generation through electromagnetic induction. Due to the nonlinear excitation force arising from ball impacts, superharmonic resonance occurs at integer fractional frequencies of the cantilever’s natural frequency. Nonlinear response amplitudes of the cantilever and resulting induced voltage are measured under continuous sinusoidal excitation at 1-20 Hz. To explore resonance characteristic, we examine three cantilevers with different natural frequencies: 21, 34 and 76 Hz. In addition, the travelling distance of the ball is altered to realize maximum induced voltage. It is found that the travelling distance needs to be tuned depending on the natural frequency of the cantilever because there is an optimal distance for power generation. For a larger travelling distance, the induced voltage decreases. The critical distance can be numerically estimated by using the analytical model based on a single DOF damped mass-spring system. Combination of the frequency up-conversion technique and tuning strategy developed in this study offers a fundamental advantage for low-frequency vibration energy harvesting with compact device dimensions compared to the commonly used on-resonance harvesters.</p>

Ultrasound-triggered disruption of microbubbles in drug delivery systems (DDS) is a promising technique for reducing side effects. Despite its potential efficacy in reducing side effects, the disruption ratio of the microbubble population remains poorly understood. In this study, we experimentally investigated the effects of diameter distribution and particle number concentration (PNC) of the microbubbles on their disruption ratio by quantifying the number of disrupted bubbles after ultrasonic irradiation. The experiments were conducted using polymer-shelled microbubbles suspended in a gelatin-filled microchamber and exposed to focused ultrasound at 1 MHz with 30 cycles. The size of microbubbles was sorted by filtration, and the concentration within the microchamber was determined by image processing. The disruption ratio of each microbubble population was evaluated as a function of PNC. The sorted microbubble population with resonant size exhibited a significantly greater disruption ratio, exceeding that of polydisperse populations by more than twofold. Moreover, the results showed an exponential decrease in the disruption ratio with increasing PNC, accompanied by a monotonic increase in the number of intact microbubbles. This suggests an increased risk of side effects even in the resonant-sized microbubble population at high PNC. Conversely, in the low PNC region, where the disruption ratio is higher, the lower number of disrupted microbubbles may lead to prolonging the treatment time. These findings highlight the necessity of determining an appropriate PNC by considering both treatment time and the risk of side effects.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging (CEUS) is a commonly used non-invasive technique for cancer detection that utilizes ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs). . However, its low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) limits detectability in deep tissues and small vessels. To enhance acoustic scattering of UCAs, we have proposed the use of phase-inverted ultrasound excitation and assessed its effectiveness through both experimental and numerical evaluations. The phase-inverted field was generated by dividing the array elements into multiple groups and driving adjacent groups with opposite phases. Scattering coefficients under two-division and three-division driving methods were compared with conventional non-division driving one. In this study, 20 ± 9 μm microbubbles were insonified with a three-cycle burst wave at 1.38 MHz, and scattering was measured as a function of inter-bubble distance (IBD). The results showed that scattering increased as IBD decreased. Among the driving methods, three-division driving method yielded the highest scattering coefficient, exceeding that of non-division driving one by 14% in experiments and 11% in simulations. These findings suggest that multi-division excitation enhances acoustic scattering of microbubbles and may improve CEUS performance in deep tissues and fine vasculature.

This paper presents a perturbation analysis of the excitation problem for an open domain. As a fundamental study, it addresses wave scattering by a crack in a two-dimensional unbounded domain to avoid fictitious eigenfrequency issues, which are encountered in a boundary integral equation. The modal amplitude is approximated using the perturbation method, employing a Taylor expansion around the complex-valued eigenfrequency for the open domain. The eigenfrequency problem for an open domain is solved using boundary element and Sakurai-Sugiura methods. Several numerical results demonstrate that the perturbation solutions evaluate the modal amplitude with real-valued frequency excitation.

Disruption of gas-filled microcapsules under pulsed ultrasound irradiation is experimentally studied. The disruption rate turned out to decrease with the mean concentration and is inversely proportional to the mean concentration for the particular case of the two-dimensional spatial distribution.

The superharmonic resonance of a cantilever beam subject to mechanical ball impacts is investigated numerically for potential vibration energy harvesting. The Fourier amplitudes of the cantilever’s displacement have been obtained and compared with the experimental results. It is found that the numerical solution of the superharmonic components shows quantitative agreement with the experiment in the low-frequency range associated with human-induced motions. The excitation region of the superharmonics has been represented as a function of the excitation frequency and the gap distance of the ball motion.

Previously we developed a vibration-based micro electromagnetic energy harvester employing a 16-poles thin magnet plate and a high-aspect-ratio spiral micro array coil. However, how to scavenge ambient energy efficiently from vibration sources at low frequency has been identified as a critical challenge. To address this challenge, we propose a micro energy harvester able to convert the applied low-frequency vibration up to a high-frequency vibration by mechanical collision. Upon excitation, the steel ball within the guideway periodically strikes a cantilever at one end of the guideway, allowing the multi-pole magnet suspended on the cantilever to vibrate with higher frequencies. After the explanation of the working principle, a proof-of-concept prototype is fabricated and tested.

Recent clinical results show that implantable centrifugal blood pumps (CBP) utilizing magnetic or hydrodynamic bearings are superior to those using contact bearings in terms of durability, thrombus formation and hemolysis. Magnetic bearing technology is also expected to be used in extracorporeal disposable CBPs. However, the use of NdFeB magnets in the rotor of the disposable part is expensive, and this needs to be addressed. Our research group has developed a switched reluctance type bearingless motor (SRBELM) that doesn’t use NdFeB magnet in the disposable part. However, the generated torque of the SR-BELM has not been sufficient for the pump. To improve the rotation controller, a torque simulator of our SR-BELM system is designed. The simulator considering self-inductance and torque coefficient that change with the rotational angle can reproduce the previous experimental results.

Under an ultrasound field, a microbubble oscillates in volume due to the pressure disturbance. Nonlinear ultrasounds scattered from oscillating microbubbles have been applied to ultrasound imaging. Making use of the oscillation of microbubbles, a small pore of the order of micrometers can be produced on a biological cell. In the sonoporation technique, drugs or DNAs are transported into the biological cell from the small pore. In this study, we focuses on the nonlinear dynamics of tandem microbubbles, and investigates their coupling oscillation using a perturbation method. The coupling term is introduced into a set of coupled Rayleigh-Plesset equations in a form of an additional pressure term. Expanding the equations of motion up to their cubic terms, weakly nonlinear solutions are obtained using the method of multiple scales. An analytically obtained nonlinear normal modes, which describes amplitudes of a freely oscillating bubble as a function of frequencies, shows that the in-phase oscillatory mode gets instability and bifurcated to nonlinear normal modes. Furthermore, the frequency response curve obtained in the analysis shows that a nonlinear localization of amplitudes resulting from the nonlinear normal modes, where the amplitude of a microbubble is several times larger than the other one, even though the two bubbles have exactly the same radii. However, after the isolation distance between the bubbles exceeds a critical value, the bifurcated in-phase oscillatory mode gets stable again, which gives rise to disappearing of the nonlinear normal modes. In conclusion, a coupled oscillatory system of tandem bubbles has nonlinear localized modes due to the weakly coupling acoustic radiation.

Nonlinear socillation of a single microbubble under an ultrasound field is numerically investigated using the boundary element method (BEM) in the three dimensional axisymmetric coordinates. BEM basically is used to solve a Laplace's equation composed of a harmonic function. For bubble dynamics, the flow ambient the bubble is assumed to be potential flow in order to introduce a velocity potential, which obeys the Laplace's equation in the flow region. Using the Green's theorems, the Laplace's equation is readily transformed to a boundary integral equations, finally leading to an algebraic equation system. Solving the equation system every time-step and evolving the boundary in terms of Lagrange point of view, mechanical response of the bubble to the pressure field is obtained. The results are discussed in a sence of nonlinear oscillation.

It has recently observed that microbubbles coated with a lipid monolayer on their surface oscillate non-spherically under driving acoustic pressure. In addition, the oscillations have been proved to make substantial effects, in particular, on acoustic scatterings, collapse phenomena, and life spans of the bubbles. However, it is so complicated to take mechanical properties of a lipid coating into consideration that further study focusing on the lipid coating is needed. Notably, surface tension varies due to the existence of the lipid coating. In this study, firstly we investigate parametrical instability of a free gas bubble oscillating spherically. In general, the coupling of the radial oscillation and the surface oscillation is one-way coupling so that the two systems exchange energy each other when the surface oscillations are parametrically excited. Secondly, how the effective surface tension changes the unstable regions in which surface oscillations are parametrically excited is discussed, using numerical simulation.

For the field of ultrasound treatment and diagnosis technology utilizing microbubbles, we proposed a sound irradiation method with a single-frequency ultrasound to induce multiple vibration responses within a bubble cloud. Through a combination of numerical analysis and experimental validation, we established the underlying principle. To achieve this, we employed a technique where the polarity of the voltage applied to each element of the ultrasonic linear array was selectively reversed. This manipulation led to the formation of distinct spatial patterns in the irradiated sound waves. By varying the irradiation patterns, we observed changes in the vibration modes exhibited by the bubble cloud. The intensity and spatial distribution of the scattered sound field were altered accordingly.

The disruption rate of the polymer-shelled microbubbles (microcapsules) subject to ultrasound irradiation was measured experimentally from optical microscopic observation, which enables one to study bubble cloud oscillation in controlled drug release application. Ultrasonically disrupted microcapsules were optically visualized at high spatial resolution by using a planar micro-chamber. The disruption rate was calculated based on particle analysis of the recorded image as a function of size distribution and the number concentration of the microcapsule cloud.
