    <jats:p>
    We report the detection of zero-bias photocurrents induced by interband excitation using oblique near-infrared light (
    <jats:italic>λ</jats:italic>
    = 0.780 μm) along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the helical axis in a millimeter-sized Te crystal. The photocurrent parallel to the helical axis exhibits a circular-polarization-dependent component, namely circular photogalvanic effect. We create a framework for estimating the gyrotropic photoconductivity tensor
    <jats:italic>β</jats:italic>
    , the ratio between the circular-polarization-dependent photocurrent density and intensity of light, through which extrinsic
    <jats:italic>β</jats:italic>
    values ranging from a few to a few tens of nA W
    <jats:sup>−1</jats:sup>
    are obtained. Searching the
    <jats:italic>β</jats:italic>
    values through existing literatures reveals that these values vary significantly with sample conditions, excitation wavelengths, and forms of crystallite samples. A particular interesting point found in our study is that the
    <jats:italic>β</jats:italic>
    values for the interband excitation may be greater than those for intraband excitation as far as bulk Te is concerned.

    Chirality is a manifestation of the asymmetry inherent in nature. It has been defined as the symmetry breaking of the parity of static objects, and the definition was extended to dynamic motion such that true and false chiralities were distinguished. Recently, rotating, yet not propagating, atomic motions were predicted and observed in two-dimensional materials, and they were referred to as ‘chiral phonons’. A natural development would be the discovery of truly chiral phonons that propagate while rotating in three-dimensional materials. Here we used circularly polarized Raman scattering and first-principles calculations to identify truly chiral phonons in chiral bulk crystals. This approach enabled us to determine the chirality of a crystal in a non-contact and non-destructive manner. In addition, we demonstrated that the law of the conservation of pseudo-angular momentum holds between circularly polarized photons and chiral phonons. These findings are expected to help develop ways for transferring the pseudo-angular momentum from photons to electron spins via propagating chiral phonons in opto-phononic-spintronic devices.

    バルク光起電力効果(光ガルバノ効果)は、空間反転対称性の破れた結晶に光を照射したときに、直流電場の印加なしに分極電流が生じる非線形光学効果である。この分極電流は結晶内をバイアス電圧なしに伝播することが知られているが、そのメカニズムは知られていない。バルク光起電力効果によって光エネルギーから電流を取り出す効率の向上を図るために、結晶内の分極電流伝播を時間分解イメージングすることを目的とする。
    本年度は、強誘電体LiNbO3(zカット)単結晶基板に直線偏光フェムト秒光パルスを照射して生じる超高速光電流を、増幅器と高速オシロスコープを用いて観測した。光電流の電流方向と大きさは励起光の偏光に依存し、対称性の議論からバルク光起電力効果(光ガルバノ効果)によって生じたことが確認された。また、照射スポット位置を試料上でスキャンすることで、電流の試料内分布の可視化を行った。
    一方、フェムト秒レーザーを用いたポンプ・プローブ測定において、プローブ光を集光せずに照射し、CMOSカメラを用いてイメージングすることで、ポンプ光スポット外に伝播した素励起(フォノン・ポラリトン)のダイナミクスに関する情報を時間分解測定した。また数値計算の結果と比較してフォノン・ポラリトンの正常波と異常波の空間伝播を分離した。励起光スポット位置依存性と偏光方位角依存性をとり、バルク光起電力効果とフォノン・ポラリトン生成の関係について議論した。

    本年度は、1. 九大における共焦点サブミクロン空間分解能の2次高調波(SHG)測定システムの各部分の試験とそれを用いた設計の完成、2.これら一式とソフト/PCを共同研究者(千葉大学横田研)に送り、そこで、組み上げ(部品の連結)とシステムとしての動作試験と初期データの取得 3.九大で本課題の原理を、電位分布と伝導測定で解析し理論計算を行った。4.また、この表面形状を、化学的に原子層レベルに平坦化する検討を、兵庫県立大藤澤研で行った。
    <BR>
    1.の各要素の検討では、九大で、共同研究者の設計を再検討し変えた。即ち、横田研方式では干渉での参照SHG偏光と強度の制御が困難なため、創始者早稲田大学上江洲教授の最初の方式[LiNbO3単結晶で位相整合角度にして回転]を検討した。さらに、机上でKTPとBBOを用いる方式、また、広帯域偏光子減衰素子を用いる方式を考案し検討した。この結果、LiTaO3のQPM (Quasi phase matching)とフレネルロム素子を使って干渉させる方式を九大で考案し、この方式を用いることにした。このSHGシステムに用いた全品とソフトは千葉大に送り、長期貸し出し等を行い全て移管した。 2. 千葉大学横田研で、九大から送ったlaserやロックインが故障したため、まず、これを修理し、凡そ3カ月の遅れがでた。また、九大で光路とそのジグの設計に不十分な点が見つかり、再設計した。これらの後、2次高調波が見えるようになった。さらに、XYZ方向の走査での2次高調波分布測定により分域が見えるようになった。 3.の電気伝導と原子間力顕微鏡を組み合わせたところ、表面の電子の挙動が、九大渡部の理論(PRB1998,PRL2001)に合うことが分かったため、論文執筆中である。

    Excitation and detection of coherent quasiparticles, e.g. magnons or phonons have been attracted considerable scientific interest in the last few decades because it can be exploited to investigate the dynamical properties of wide range of materials. Among the several classes of materials, garnet belongs to an important class because it can be practically exploited for optical communication in IR regime, designing microwave filters and fabricating high frequency magneto-optical modulators. In this study, we employed femtosecond pump-probe technique to excite the coherent quasiparticle in the garnet. Our result indicates that linearly polarized pump excites the quasiparticle of frequency 4.2 THz. Importantly, 4.2 THz mode does not exhibit any noticeable change in the frequency against the temperature variation which reveals that the 4.2 THz mode is associated with the excitation of phonons, instead of magnons. A phenomenological symmetry-based theory reveals that oscillations from high frequency Eg phonon modes are excited. Selective excitation by linearly polarized pump and detection by circularly polarized probe confirms that impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) is responsible for driving the coherent phonons in the garnet. Experimental results obtained from ISRS measurements show striking agreements with spontaneous Raman data of the garnet by taking into account the symmetry of phonon modes and corresponding excitation and detection selection rules.

    We have conducted versatile researches aiming at comprehensive elucidation of optical spin conversion in various spin systems. The contribution of energy and angular momentum transfer processes to the all-optical magnetization switch has been established. Inverse magneto-electric effect in antiferromagnets have been studied experimentally and theoretically, indicating the universality of that effect. Moreover, we have developed novel technologies; derivation of magnon dispersion relation from time-spatial resolved measurements, observation of helicity dependent magnon modes, and terahertz generation. We have also elucidated that the united understanding of the spin current generation mediated by magon excitation via non-linear spin conversion at the interface is possible. Furthermore, we have verified the conversion of quantum states from single photons to single electron spins and have shown the feasibility of the conversion of entanglement from photon pair to electron spins.

    Refractive index change is induced by the light illumination in the polymer that changes crystal structure with the temperature changing process. The average refractive change of the material is measured by the Spectroscopic Ellipsometry. Space resolved index change is measured by the interferometry. In other approach, using the polymer that coumarin molecules are attached to both end, we changed the refractive index and absorption spectrum by the dimerization and its inverse process with light illumination.

    The aim of this project is to produce new nonlinear optical devices using domain control in relaxor ferroelectric crystals, which shows various unique properties such as relaxor phase transition or huge piezoelectric effect.
    We focused on PZN-PT, which is a mixed crystal of Pb(Zn_<1/3>Nb_<2/3>)O_3 and PbTiO_3, and tried to realize extremely large electro-optic, nonlinear optical, and photorefractive effects using macroscopic alignment of spontaneous polarization. We tried to produce 1- or 2-dimensional domain pattern with domain reversal technique for frequency conversion, and soliton compression of femtosecond pulses. To realize these effects and devices, we investigated domain structure of PZN-PT single crystal using observation of surface the crystals to understand the physics of spontaneous polarization and domain structure.
    This year, we observed the domain of PZN-PT after polarization using Piezo-Response Microscope (PRM). The difference of the domain pattern when the crystal is poled to [001], [110], and [111] direction was investigated. The domain pattern of [110] poled crystal has clearly ordered and periodic despite that of [001] poled crystal is quite irregular. This result support a previous report that the direction of the spontaneous polarization is [110] direction, not [001]. It also suggest that the direction of the spontaneous polarization changes with the variation of the ratio of PZN and PT.
